[Framers] autonumbers in Arabic

2021-06-23 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi all,

We need to setup a template in Arabic. FM comes with three different numbering
styles: , and .

Anyone of you with experience with Arabic in FM who can tell me the difference?

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

are you using a character format on the headings? A hyperlink box to a
paragraph may break where a character format starts.

Re: [Framers] Basic question: hyperlinks to paragraphs

2020-10-28 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Bertrand,

not sure if that will work, but did you try to use markers? Insert a marker (of
your own type) at the target location and create a link (hyperlink or
cross-ref) to that marker that displays the marker text. Additional benefit is
that it will also allow you to create an 'index' of those markers in your
publication.

Else, best advise is to contact Rick Quatro and ask him to propose a script
that will help you to insert those newlink and gotolink markers in asiple
manner. He’s very good at that. A script is an investment, but ROI is very
quick.

Re: [Framers] Character codes

2020-09-25 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Doug,

you could open the Character Palette in FM (used to be under file-utilities, in
FM2019 it’s at Insert-character) and then find the character. It will display
the different unicode codes.

Re: [Framers] image background problem

2020-09-18 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Ken,

support for transparency is better with newer FM versions, I’m not sure how
FM10 yet supports PSD. Transparency should be supported when saving the PSD as
EPS in Photoshop.

In any case: be aware that transparency is NOT previewd on screen. Even not
with newer FM versions (I think only from FM2019?). To test the transparency
you need a PostScript printer - or print to PDF using a PostScript printer
driver. If you use any non-postscript printer (inktjet etc) transparency won’t
work.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 12 and Parallels on a Mac (running Windows 10)

2020-08-30 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Z,

i think the solution is to run Parallels with Graphics setting ’scaled’ in
stead of 'Best for Retina'. The problem is that the FM user interface is not
prepared for high-resolution display. This was only resolved by the Adobe
development team with version FM 2017.

Re: [Framers] FrameMaker and transparency

2020-05-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Ken,

Short answer: yes it does. Fm supports transparency in EPS files.

But: you don’t see it on screen. And, it only works when printing to a
postscript printer (or pdf).

Re: [Framers] X-ref issue: FM links that work in the FM file but don't work in the PDF file

2020-05-16 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Barry,

a valid xref will always produce a link in PDF - unless (at the time of
creating the pdf) the xref target can not be found - or the xref points to a
file that’s not part of the current book.

Best way to find broken links is to set the conditions for the whole book (as
you need to have for the pdf), do an update and than do a search for
'unresolved cross references'. Or (depending on the FM vesion you have) open
(all) the files and use the Cross-Reference pod, filter on External Cross
references or Unresolves Cross References. This will give a nice overview.

Re: [Framers] running H/F

2020-03-30 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hello Tom,

not sure if this helps, but do you know that you can add multiple paragraph
format names in your Running H/F definition? Separated by comma (I think). FM
will pick up the first available form your content. So, for example, if your
definition is <$paratext[Heading1,HeadingNN,TOC_Heading]> it will pick up
Heading1 from a regular chapter, HeadingNN from your preface and TOC_Heading
from your TOC. Or whatever naminhg you use.

This way you can use the same H/F variable for different documents in your book
and don’t need to restore after importing variables.

Re: [Framers] Smart Paste

2019-09-09 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Rick,

the smart paste is a XSL defined in your structured application (for example
for DITA: $STRUCTDIR\xml\DITA_1.2\app\technicalContent\xslt\h2d.xsl)

So I guess you can modify that to your needs. As far as I understood, the
original idea is that you copy something (from word) that is saved from the
clipboard as HTML. Then this HTML is converted to (DITA) XML . So I’m not sure
if that will work with copied XML.

Re: [Framers] Framers Digest, Vol 160, Issue 4

2019-07-24 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Roger,

as mentioned: there are other tools to convert Word to XML. One example is
Convertoo (http://convertoo.net/ <http://convertoo.net/>) , from the makers of
DITAToo. This tool will convert Word to DITA XML and does a very good job
especially if your word doc is consistent in structure. Result is DITA XML that
can be easily reworked in FrameMaker.

Hi Julie,

you could use a (one column) table for each Part Number and the belonging

and add the table continued variable. This will be repeated at the top of each
column where the table breaks.

Hi Rick,

I don’t think there is by default. Normally, when you rescale an image in FM it
saves the width and height propertys in the XML. So you if you can find out the

Re: [Framers] Static image to video feature

2017-11-16 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - iDTP
The nice thing is that the pdf will be perfectly printable plus will be
interactive when viewed online or on screen. Actually pdf files are more used
for online viewing then for printing.

Also, from FM you could use the same source to create html.

Re: [Framers] Static image to video feature

2017-11-15 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Ken,

first import the video file (check what formats are supported, MP4, Mpeg, etc)
using the file-import dialog. Then right click the imported file and choose set
poster to find an image that wil be displayed in the pdf. This image will be
clickable and start the video.

FM12 has a sample manual in the samples folder that shows this. I don’t think
this sample is in FM11, but it works for the same.

[Framers] FM2017 - locations of conditional tags?

2017-06-28 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi all,

up to FM2015 the 'add/edit condition tag’ window displayed a list of locations
for the selected tag.
In FM2017 the 'edit conditional tag' window doesn’t have this anymore.

Is there now another way to display a list of locations of condtional tags - or
is this a bug?

Thanks,

Re: [Framers] OT: CMS Scope

2017-05-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi, you didn’t mention your name,

what you describe is very organization centric. Try to look at it form a client
perspective, from the users point of view.
What do your users need? What do your clients need, both new and existing ones?
That should be the staring point and, if you do that right, it will give enough
ROI arguments to defend the idea of a unified content strategy. And think about
content services.

And, by the way, there’s no such thing as an Enterprise CMS that will cover
all. Let everyone use their own systems but govern it centrally.

[Framers] Include PDF in a book

2017-03-16 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi, I’m a bit confused about this: in a FM book I can add a .pdf file. But it
doesn’t print with the .book.

Anyone knows a runaround for this? Or is it just not possible (tried up to FM
2015).

Re: [Framers] How to get xml to use structured application

2017-01-19 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Rick,

in your structured application, add the Entities element and declare the Public
ID and the (local) path to the DTD.

(if you’re using the structured application designer, go to advanced settings
and then it’s on the bottom of the screen)

RE: However, the xml file has to be in the same folder as ixxus.dtd. Is there a
way to avoid this requirement? Thank you very much.

[Framers] FM2015 - Repeat chaptertitlename variable contents?

2016-11-25 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Framers, Adobe team,

FM2015, book with folders: how to repeat, reuse, the <$chaptertitlename>
variable contents in subsequent files in the folder.

This variable displays the 'chapter title name' in the folder-template (as
expected), but it displays the file name in other files. Can the contents be
picked up by other files in the same folder?

Or should this be a feature request for the next FM version?

Re: [Framers] SVG exported from Adobe Illustrator is all black

2016-08-24 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Yves,

I’ve been struggling with SVGs in the past. It turns out that Adobe Illustrator
SVG doesn’t show with FM - not sure why but is has to do with extra code that
Illustrator adds. We used a software named 'svgcleaner' to remove all
unnecessary code and that helped.

If you open the SVG in inkscape you can try to figure out what part of the code
creates the problem.

[Framers] Subject: Need FrameMaker Language Help

2016-04-05 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Rick,

I’m not sure what you’re looking for, but if you edit the EDD and add the
Language element (in PropertiesFont) you get the list of available languages as
element to insert. No need to type manually.
Update the EDD to current version (in your case FM11) to get the corresponding
supported languages. For FM2015 the list will include arabic, hebrew, farsi,
etc..

In MIF, all languages are written out in English. So if you need to check the
correct language code, mark a paragraph with that language, save as MIF and
read out what is written for Language.

All other use of language coding (for example to use in the xml:lang attribute)
is actually arbitrary and subject to what your client needs to confirm to.

[Framers] Subject: Special Characters in Variables

2016-02-07 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hello Art,

just typing a dash works for me. Or are you looking for other special

The contents of a variable should be unicode. Best approach for special
characters (in any language) would be to type the text in a Unicode text
editor, then copy and past it into the variable definition box.

Mif2go issue: invalid markup

2015-06-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi,

do we still have some mif2go gurus out there?

My mif2go conversion (FM11 to dita) creates invalid markup in some cases. Any
help in solving this appreciated …

My procedure has an image in a step. I expect it to be converted as:

step
cmd.../cmd
info
fig
title ../title
image/
/fig
/info
/step

but in stead it comes out as:

step
cmd ../cmd
fig
title…/title
info
image /
/fig
/info
/step

As you can see, the info element starts inside the fig, but ends outside the
fig element.

Any idea…?

Also, any suggestion for a smart script or SXLT that can solve this (in
hundreds of topics …) appreciated.

Thanks….

Building blocks for LOR

2015-06-09 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi, I’m looking for an overview of possible building blocks for a List Of
References.
For this special case I generate a list of referenced images. By default FM
adds $referencename as building block. This results in the file name, plus
(for bitmaps) the dpi setting. I’d like to add the dimensions (height-width),
or percentage scaling.

Anyone?

cross-ref to marker(text)

2015-05-21 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi all,

unstructured FM. Can I make a cross-ref to a (cross-ref, other) marker and

Alternative could be to create a hypertext marker - but how can a Hypertext

Any other suggestions for the above? Client wants to make hyperlinks in the

able to use custom text.

Thanks,

Re: Scrolling pages issue

2015-01-24 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Dave,

this is a 'well known' FrameMaker issue. It has to do with your image format
(jpg?) and image color settings. We had similar issues with sRGB jpg images.
Somehow FM has trouble translating the color information to screen presentation.

You, and others experiencing the same, should report it to the FrameMaker
development team (in cc) so they can do something about it for a next release.

you can use the object style designer to create an object style that puts a

Re: two columns

Hi Rebecca,

Frame has no section breaks. Instead you can use a paragraph format that spans
both columns to 'break' the page (use the pagination tab of the paragraph

above and start below again.

Use that paragraph to anchor your table.

Docbook). The book file has valid XML structure (book, chapters etc).

If I save the book to XML the referenced .xml files are omitted from the
 resulting XML.

Any advice how to get a XML from the book file with all referenced .xml
 files in it?

Re: Docbook bookfile

2014-11-21 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
I’ll redefine my question:
for a specific use case I’m investigating the option of using a docbook book
file to let my client edit and maintain their docbook-based xml files in a
book-like setting. Analog to the ditamap.
Now when I open a docbook book file in FM, FM converts it directly to a FM
book. All XML files are converted to fm files. That’s not what I want.
I want the author to be able to open the docbook book file as XML, be able to
edit the individual linked XML files and eventually save the complete book as
FM book for publishing.

So my question to current docbook FM users: has one of you found a solution for
this, maybe a script or a way of working that resembles the topic based
approach of DITA maps?

Thanks,

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

Wim Hooghwinkel

Re: Docbook bookfile

2014-11-21 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Thanks all … for your kind concerns about me trying to do a docbook experiment
in the DITA ages ….

I have been working with docbook (variants) already back in the FrameMaker 5.5
days, so support for docbook has been there in FM, I know. And it still is.
In the early days this support was not based on round tripping the XML.
My current client has inherited a simple, docbook based structured application.
They maintain both a structured FM version (book with chapters) and individual
XML files (one for each chapter). To get them working in a real single sourcing
set up (that is, not having to maintain FM versions anymore) my first approach
would be to mimic a ditamap or fm-book by using the docbook book doctype.
This book can link to XML files, being the first step to topic based. But, as
Alan points out, FM converts each component to a FM file when opening the
book XML file.

I have not been doing docbook or any other custom XML in FM for a long time,
and being spoiled by all the DITA support suddenly feel a bit clumsy by trying
to get a docbook book into FM.
So, I was wondering if any of you already had found or made a solution for that.

Eventually my client will move to DITA. But as they have a lot of current
content it’s not feasible to start a conversion project now. We have to find a
short term solution to let them continue working with the content as it is.

RE: FM9 Crashes when Creating PDFs with files that Contain PDFs

2014-10-28 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Alison,

If you’re really sure that the FM files have not been changed, nor have the
(PDF) images referenced, then it must be something in your system.

Did you (or someone else) change a local printer or a network printer? Or did
you remove, or update VISIO installation or MSoffice? Or change other software?
It’s possible that the pdf files you created from visio use a font that is no
longer available on your system. You won’t notice until it’s gone ...

Another thing is remove all your temp files, and font cache files (search your
PC). Your distiller folder has a cache, plus saved error messages. may be these
can give a clue?

Re: Frame 9 Crashing - Can't Create PDFs

2014-10-23 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
I don’t think FrameMaker dictionary has any influence on acrobat processing.
dict refers to the postscript dictionary.

xshow often relates to a font issue. Re-installing acrobat, actually the pdf
printer driver, may help. Or check the settings in the acrobat distiller
program (font locations, font settings). Is the pdf printer your default
printer when saving to PDF?

Try printing another document, does that give the same error?

Re: wrapping DITA steps in tables

2014-10-21 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Rebecca,

interesting question. Theoretically it should be possible to 'translate’ the
steps element into a FrameMaker table, for presentation, just like we do with
the properties element.
It would put some heavy constraints on your content however, as each step must
have exactly one cmd and one info element.

You’ll need to adapt the read/write rules and the EDD. I just did a test and it
seems to work. Look at the constructs for the property element in the reference
rules and EDD to see how you can set it up. This what I’ve got in the rules
file:

  /* steps */
element steps {
  is fm table element;
  fm property columns value is 2;
  attribute props is fm property column widths;
  }

fm element fm-stepsbody unwrap;
element step {
  is fm table row element;
  fm property row type value is Body;
  }
element cmd is fm table cell element;
element info is fm table cell element;

(note: I used default FM DITA, not DITA-fmx yet)(note: I left out the table
heading ….)

To make it work in the EDD I made steps to be Element (Table), where general
rule is fm-stepsbody.
Then fm-stepsbody has step+ and step (Table Row) has cmd, info.
cmd and info are both Table Cell.

Actually, in a task topic this works like a charm and is a perfect template to
make 'clean' tasks.
Using (cmd, info) as the general rule for step makes inserting and adding steps
very easy.

In the WYSIWYG view I can see a table, while in the XML view I can see the
correct steps xml code.

Thanks for the suggestion ….

Then

Re: Frame crash on Windows under parallels

2014-06-24 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Alan,

I also had the impression it had to do with the mouse. But lately it aso
happened when my mouse was dead (battery…).
Especially when a book is open (or a ditamap) and some pods/panels, the
document screen gets smaller and can not show the complete page. Scrolling left
or right causes a crash...

(no) Console file in FM11 and FM12

2014-04-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
I’m not sure if this is a bug or by design - or if it’s just my computer:

In Edit-Preferences, uncheck 'Show File Translation Errors'. Restart
FrameMaker: there’s no console file anymore. The consfile.txt is empty.

Anyone else seeing this?

Re: (no) Console file in FM11 and FM12

2014-04-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Well, there’s more than just file translation errors. On startup there are
messages generated by plugins (frame script a.o.). May not seem important but
can be useful.
More important for me is when publishing DITA to FMbooks, eiher by DITAfmx or
DITAfm. I needed to debug this process but my consfile remained empty. It took
me a while to find out that this setting caused all messages to disappear, not
only the file translation errors but also messages generated by DITA-fmx. Hence
I think this is a bug. If not, the setting should be named something like: omit
console file.

Re: TOC entry out of sequence

2014-03-27 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Karen,

could you explain how your files are set up - and in particular this erroneous
file - why do you use separate disconnected frames for your headings?

Do you place the frame you mention on the Body page or on the Master Page? Do
you use multiple flows in your documents?

If the Chapter heading and the Heading 1 are not in the same flow it will be
impossible for FM to determine the correct order when generating the TOC.

You could send me the files off-list if you want and I’ll have a look.

Hi Karen, if you say : 'In the document, the frame in which the misplaced
level 1 head resides is
not positioned above that of the chapter head.’ do you mean that you’re using
separate frames, just for headings or for the contents as well?

We once had an issue with frames and numbering and it turned out that not the
order of frames was important, but the sequence of how the content was added.

What happens if you switch chapters, does always the last chapter give the same

Re: Best CMS to use with DITA

2014-02-15 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Gillian,

There won’t be a best CMS to use with DITA in general. I all depends on your
requirements. And budget…

Oxygen is not a CMS, Oxygen is an authoring tool. Subversion is not a CMS
either. For DITA you would not look for a document CMS - look for a Component
Content Management System (CCMS) or any of the DITA CMS-es: Easy DTA (what are
the issues you encounter?), DITAToo (budget, best price/quality ratio,
integrates with FrameMaker), DocZone (SaaS), Bluestream (integrates with FM
using DITA-FMx). For large scale implementations there’s Componize, Ixiasoft,
SDL, etc..

Trados is not a CMS either, Trados is a translation tool.

Since you’re on the FrameMaker list I presume you use FM as authoring and
publishing tool. Then either DITAToo or Bluestream would be a good choice. Both
easy to install and good fit for a small team.

If you need help, contact me off list.

Re: FM12 has char format in xref been fixed?

FrameMaker (since FM9) fully supports Unicode. If you need special characters
(like um) in your content it’s not necessary to use dingbats or other symbol
fonts, just use the unicode character. These will be visible in xrefs just like
any other character - depending on the font you use of course. That should be a
unicode font.

Subject: Re: Character Tag As Is setting--isn't

2013-11-20 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Try this one: while you're in the character designer press Shift+F8.

All values will be set to As Is. You can modify the format and apply - or
update all.

But Matt is right: when you first click 'Apply', all current values of the
selected text will be shown and if you next click 'update all' , these values
will be stored. So the correct order of working is, even with text selected,
press Shift+F8, make only the necessary changes and click 'Update All', not
apply.

You can test this by selecting some text, apply a character format, press
Shift+F8 and then without modifying choose 'Update All'. Next time you apply
the same format nothing happens: all is set to as is.

But I second Matts workflow tip: click outside the text flow to create or
modify character tags. Only then you'll be sure to get what you want.

Change default image placement

The default behavior of FM when inserting an image is to place (the anchored

Can someone advise on an extend script to achieve this?

Re: Insert image as H/F variable - script

2013-10-23 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Well, I guess the current use case is fairly simple. Suppose we use a marker in
the text: Header/Footer $1. This marker has as content the name of the image,
let's say Pict0001. The Running H/F will display the text (Pict0001). So what
we need is an extend script that replaces the H/F text with the actual image:
Pict0001.jpg.

As I'm still not able to write scripts - too busy with other things I guess -
can someone advise me on such a script, would it be very difficult? In the
workflow it should be automatically triggered once the XML is opened in FM
(10), so that the use experiences it as 'real' H/F. We'll need a manual
'reload' action of course in case of repagination and content change. For ease
of use we can put the complete path of the image in the marker of course, or
use a relative path.

 Hi,

one of my clients wants to use images as (in) H/F variables. This can not be
done using default FM functions, as a variable can not contain an image.

Has anyone handled this kind of formatting and can give me some suggestions?
Or may be someone has a script available to replace H/F with an image - I
guess an image that should be taken from the content, just like a H/F takes
the heading text from the content.

Note: this is structured FM (XML, not DITA) and currently moving tom FM7 to
 FM10/11.

Insert image as H/F variable - script

Dictionaries

2013-10-22 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi,

We noticed that installing FM11 overwrites user dictionaries that were created
in FM9. I'd expect that a new installation of FM would keep existing
dictionaries. Anyone else experienced this?

Insert image as H/F variable

2013-10-18 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi,

one of my clients wants to use images as (in) H/F variables. This can not be
done using default FM functions, as a variable can not contain an image.

Has anyone handled this kind of formatting and can give me some suggestions? Or
may be someone has a script available to replace H/F with an image - I guess an
image that should be taken from the content, just like a H/F takes the heading
text from the content.

Note: this is structured FM (XML, not DITA) and currently moving tom FM7 to
FM10/11.

thanks,

Structured FrameMaker Developer's Guide for FM 11?

2013-10-17 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Does anyone know if there's an updated version of the Structured FrameMaker
Developer's Guide or reference guide available somewhere that goes beyond FM9?
The FrameMaker 11 help mentions: For more information, see the online manual,
Developing Structured Applications with Adobe FrameMaker on the Adobe
website,www.adobe.com/go/lr_FrameMaker_support_en. But that only shows the home
page for help.

There may be not that many changes, but it doesn't feel very professional to
point my client to the FM9 manuals.

Any other resources available?

Thanks,

Vriendelijke groet / Kind regards,

script for batch PDF generation

2013-09-30 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi all,

I'm looking for a way to automate the pdf generation of FM books (unstructured)
in FM11. Use case: 6 books, each in 24 languages to be printed to PDF once a
day. Has anyone such a script (ExtendScript) available or knows of a plugin
that performs it? Would be nice if the script will allow additional
modification like importing variable definitions etc.

I'm not sure if FMBatch still exists and can work with FM11?

any suggestion appreciated…..

I am unable to consistently encode hypertext links among five files in one
 unstructured book.

Here's how the files are arranged:

NOTE: The .book file and all the target files are children of folder
\Abc_Def. File BEGIN_HERE.fm is sibling of folder \Abc_Def and is to
contain links to all four targets.

 Folder \Abc_Def
   File dir_Abc_Def.book
   File targetA.fm
   File targetB.fm
   File targetC.fm
   File targetD.fm
 File BEGIN_HERE.fm

I moved File BEGIN_HERE.fm out of folder \Abc_Def because a recipient of the
informational product (portable document format files) wants it that way. I
am using a character tag to constrain both the newlinks and gotolinks to
small amounts of text. Before I moved file BEGIN_HERE.fm out of folder
\Abc_Def, crossreferences among all files worked flawlessly.

My latest attempt has been to specify named destinations (for example,
newlink dir_About.fm) and jumps to named destinations (for example, gotolink
 dir_About.fm).

In the source .fm files, these jumps work only a small part of the time. In
the deliverable .pdf files, they don't work at all.

 Robert -

Thanks for the info. I, too, haven't done this since years ago. So
long ago, in fact that I've tracked down my materials from Shlomo
 Perets' training back in 2002.

Yes, all the files are part of dir_Abc_Def.book. The odd thing, for
myself, is that the child file, is outside the folder that contains
 the rest of the book.

Nothing I've tried so far works, so I'm hoping that someone on the list
can help me find the secret sauce that I'm missing from the recipe.

I haven't done that sort of thing in some years, but it used to be that
if you defined cross-references between .fm files in different
directories, all the files had to be open when you saved a book as PDF.

Also, the PDFs have to have the same relative directory relationship.
If you have ./foo/foo.book and ./bar/bar.book, links in foo.pdf will be
 to ../bar/bar.pdf.

If BEGIN_HERE.pdf is generated from an .fm file instead of a .book, that
 might be a problem

FM11 license under parallels and bootcamp

2013-07-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi all,

I'm using a macbook with bootcamp and Parallels. So I can either start up with
Windows (bootcamp) or start Windows (and FM) from within the MacOS using
Parallels. Parallels uses the bootcamp partition so the Windows environment is
the same.

Now the issue is that when I'v been working with FM 11 under Bootcamp and the
next time I start FM 11 under Parallels FM thinks I'm using a trial and I need
to register my FM license. Same the other way round. Anyone else seeing this,
is there a work around?

I don't have this with FM 10 or other licensed software.

Re: Template content for new DITA topics (FM 11)

2013-07-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Scott,

well, the template file doesn't bring content. The default DITA topic types
have blanc templates, but creating a new topic brings a basic structure
(topic-title-topicmeta-body-relatedlinks). I'd like to know where that comes
from? Same, inserting a steps element also adds step and cmd. That must be
defined somewhere? I recall having seen it once, but I can't remember … For
one of my projects I want to modify these default settings.

You'll want to modify the template file specified by the structured

Re: Template content for new DITA topics (FM 11) = strawman structure

2013-07-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Matt,

Is that what you call it? I was looking for boilerplate or something similar.
It's not in the user guide.

I found some mentions of it in the Reviewers guide, but not how to change it.
Looking at the EDD it's the AutoInsertions element. Is the top level element
always inserted based on the Doctype?

Is it, in addition to inserting elements also possible to insert attributes, or
content?

You'll want to modify the template file specified by the structured

Structured Application to determine the structured application you're using

in the Global application definitions file .. StructureTools Edit

Template content for new DITA topics (FM 11)

2013-07-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Scott,

well, the template file doesn't bring content. The default DITA topic types
have blanc templates, but creating a new topic brings a basic structure
(topic-title-topicmeta-body-relatedlinks). I'd like to know where that comes
from? Same, inserting a steps element also adds step and cmd. That must be
defined somewhere? I recall having seen it once, but I can't remember ? For
one of my projects I want to modify these default settings.

Template content for new DITA topics (FM 11) = strawman structure

2013-07-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Matt,

Is that what you call it? I was looking for boilerplate or something similar.
It's not in the user guide.

I found some mentions of it in the Reviewers guide, but not how to change it.
Looking at the EDD it's the AutoInsertions element. Is the top level element
always inserted based on the Doctype?

Is it, in addition to inserting elements also possible to insert attributes, or
content?

Incorporating external documents containing tables, into a book

2013-03-10 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi John,

In FrameMaker 10 (I'm not sure about previous versions) you can add non fm
files to a FrameMaker book. They won't take up pagination etc but I think if
you add a PDF it will be included in the final print. Or did you try that
already?

RE: Relative vs. absolute links

2013-02-28 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Peggy,

it's your workflow that creates the confusion in references.

You say: ''3) I opened all of the files in FM 9, therefore converting them to
FM 9 format. I did my cleanup, including fixing the graphics path to the
Graphics subfolder and fixing cross-reference links that were broken. In
retrospect I believe cross-references within the same file were okay but
cross-references between files were all broken.''

If you open the files individually in FM9, it can't resolve cross refs because
these are in FM7 files. If you didn't change names (didn't you …?) best
approach is to use a book file for all the docs, open the book in FM9, open all
files in the book accepting all errors and then save al files in the book,
next: update all references. Now at least the cross refs should be resolved.

Then you say: ''4) When I finished my work I saved each individual file and the
book file in MIF 7.0 format. I saved the MIF files in a different folder than
the FM 9 files and copied the Graphics directory to the same folder as the
MIF files.''

If you save a file in a different folder, all references will still point to
the original locations. So saving the FM9 files in a FM7 folder will not let
them point to the graphics folder in the FM7 folder. So you should first save,
then move.

Your paths are not 'changing to absolute' but are still relative, although
pointing to the wrong folder. (note that when you read a MIF file all paths are
written as absolute paths).

You better use a book mover utility….

RE: Pagination FM 11

2013-02-01 Thread Wim Hooghwinkel - idtp
Hi Judy,

don't forget to update the FM book after applying your conditional settings.

You should always set the pagination properties from within the book file (as
recommended procedure) and not from within individual files. Be sure to agree
with overriding the individual file settings when updating the book.

Do you make use of Master Page Mappings? It can help anyway to do the 'update
and generate' command twice.

If you still get unwanted empty pages you may check for empty lines or
conditional text markers that still are on the 'empty' page. Also check your
paragraph settings. If any paragraph uses a local 'start new page' setting it
will keep starting a new page, even if the contents is conditionalized. If your
heading has a 'start at right page' setting it will always start on a right
page, even if you set the document (from within the book file) to 'start at
next available page' and create an empty left page before.

Most, if not all, cases of unwanted pagination are a result of one or more
conflicting settings.

Some people suggested strange objects or left over empty frames: that can occur
if you put frames or graphic objects directly on the page. Best practice is
always use anchored frames. These will move with the text and hide if made
conditional.
