TIME URGENT ... Missing Adobe PDF printer driver

2013-10-04 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com

Perhaps this is evidence that Dov Isaacs' cautions that having both Acrobat and
Reader installed on one workstation can cause problems are true. I never
disbelieved his cautions, but I also didn't see evidence - until recently.

Here, my employer's standard is to allow both programs to be installed on one
workstation. For me, the evidence of conflict was that, after a corporate
"push" of an update, a command in a pop-up menu in Acrobat disappeared. The
command had been there and I had used it before the update.

?My fix? Because I have administrator privileges, I summarily removed Reader
and repaired Acrobat. All was well again.

As usual, YMMV.

Nonetheless, after a couple of days of attempting both FM and Acrobat updates
with no change, changing the default application that opened the PDF is what
finally resulting in getting a working PDF printer. It was a Acrobat update
that finally did the trick, BTW, but since FM is linked to Distiller, it seems
to me that should be part of its update function, but maybe not.

I'm just reporting what worked for me. Despite occasional problems like this
I've never had to reinstall either application from scratch.

Another note: It was an update to Acrobat Reader 11 as a add-in to my browser
through a security recommendation of my Norton security software that
originally triggered the problem of losing the PDF printer.

2013-09-27 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com

I began to wonder whether some programmatic file of FrameMaker had been
corrupted. Robert Lauriston suggested "refreshing" (my term) \?maker.ini.

So, I found a separately-saved version of my \?maker.ini and replaced the one
that FrameMaker was using.

All is well again.

Help, please.

Within the last two weeks for no reason that I can determine, the behavior of

   1. The title bar no longer appears.

   2. When I focus on a "child" file, the "Application bar" appears above the

   4. When I focus on a "child" file, the "Application bar" reappears above

Seeing this oh, say, a hundred times a day is _very_ frustrating and a _lot_ of

I want the interface to:

Dave,

Have you tried resetting your workspace (from the pulldown to the left of the
minimize/maximize/close buttons)? I'm on unstructured FM10, so can't test.

You could also try these:

SOLVED: Hypertext links not working

2013-08-27 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2013-08-27-02T12:20Z

Once again, Rick Quatro is credited with a "save."

The problem is that FrameMaker was resolving the hypertext links
incorrectly because I had had all the files in a .book and was printing
the .book. The "fix" was to close the .book file, keep the files in
their respective places, encode the links as needed, and to save each
file individually. Problem solved.

Rick did mention the use of the MicroType TimeSavers plugin for
FrameMaker, but I have not yet succeeded in convincing "the powers who
are" to let me get it.

Yes, I print the book all at once to only one watched folder. I?m using File |

the same as arrangement of the .pdf files is to be.

This is the first time in _years_ that I?ve needed to do this, so it?s mighty
perplexing. I, too, customarily print large books including tables of contents
and indices and such. Those files are in only one folder, and I use File >
Single File. Everything works great.

But not with the source and output files in different folders . . ..

Hi Dave,

Is your begin_here.pdf being written to the same watched folder? I use a
similar setup when producing my larger books (a Start.pdf file that has a large
TOC that links to the individual "chapter" files). But I must write ALL files
at once, including Start, hyperlinked Index, and individual chapters, from the
book file so that relative links are not broken. When I test them in the Out
folder, everything works, and then I can move them en masse to wherever the
final files will reside. If I try to write the Start file by itself, then the
Index by itself, or the chapters, I find I have broken links.

I hope I understood your problem correctly and this helps.

I am unable to consistently encode hypertext links among five files in
one unstructured book.

Here's how the files are arranged:

NOTE: The .book file and all the target files are "children" of
folder \Abc_Def. File BEGIN_HERE.fm is "sibling" of folder \Abc_Def and is to
contain links to all four targets.

Folder \Abc_Def
  File dir_Abc_Def.book
  File targetA.fm
  File targetB.fm
  File targetC.fm
  File targetD.fm
File BEGIN_HERE.fm

I moved File BEGIN_HERE.fm out of folder \Abc_Def because a recipient
of the informational product (portable document format files) wants it that
way. I am using a character tag to constrain both the newlinks and gotolinks
to small amounts of text. Before I moved file BEGIN_HERE.fm out of folder
\Abc_Def, crossreferences among all files worked flawlessly.

My latest attempt has been to specify named destinations (for example,
newlink dir_About.fm) and jumps to named destinations (for example, gotolink
dir_About.fm).

In the source .fm files, these jumps work only a small part of the
time. In the deliverable .pdf files, they don't work at all.

Thanks for the info. I, too, haven't done this since years ago. So
long ago, in fact that I've tracked down my materials from Shlomo
Perets' training back in 2002.

Yes, all the files are part of dir_Abc_Def.book. The odd thing, for
myself, is that the "child" file, is outside the folder that contains
the rest of the book.

Nothing I've tried so far works, so I'm hoping that someone on the list

I haven't done that sort of thing in some years, but it used to be that
if you defined cross-references between .fm files in different
directories, all the files had to be open when you saved a book as PDF.

Also, the PDFs have to have the same relative directory relationship.
If you have ./foo/foo.book and ./bar/bar.book, links in foo.pdf will be
to ../bar/bar.pdf.

If BEGIN_HERE.pdf is generated from an .fm file instead of a .book, that
might be a problem.

Not producing .xml files

Windows 7 Enterprise operating system
FrameMaker 11.0.2.384 [?stand-alone with the first two updates?]
.book file and its children are on a server on the local area network

Please help me figure out and correct what we are doing wrong. A colleague who
has FrameMaker 11 (with all three updates, out of Technical Communication
Suite) gets the same useless results.

FrameMaker is not producing .xml files. Instead, it is producing files with
extensions of .e01, .e02, through .e30 and such. These ".enn" files are less
than useless to us.

We have imported element definitions

This happens both when, in the .book window:

 a. I choose the .book file and all its children.

 b. On the menu bar, I choose File?| Save as XML.

-?AND WHEN?-

 c. I choose only the .book file.

 d. On the menu bar, I choose File?| Save Book As...?> .xml.

C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\FrameMaker\11. File structapps.fm
contains element that points to:

 a. the \?.dtd

 b. the rules file

 c. the folder that contains .ent files

Yes, indeed it would be overkill. However, I was recommending Dave go to
an install that had yet to be mucked. (a fresh install, not a reinstall)

Attempting to remedy the existing mucked files could result in much
wheel spinning that might make reinstalling Fm seem like a modest
proposal.

Thanks so much for the info. I'll check it out. The problem of

looks like a deal breaker that, I'm sorry to say, gives me pause about
continuing using FrameMaker. There's just so much "pressure" to use

Reinstalling completely to fix the maker.ini files seems a bit like
overkill. When editing the maker.ini file it is a good idea to make a
copy in the same location. I name the copy maker.ini.ORIG, so I can use
that to get back to the original settings if they are needed.

This use of two structapps (local and global) files started with FM10.

There's a discussion about the use of a network drive for common
structure files in one of the Adobe webinars.

http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/event/index.cfm?event=set_registered&id=224
3297&loc=en_us

The relevant comments begin about 11:15 into the webinar.

The one you edit by using you choose Structure Tools > Edit Application
Definitions is the local one. When you edit that file, save it and then
do a Read Application Definitions (to allow your application to use the
new definitions) everything is okay and you can use your new
application. However...

The global file is not affected by these edits. Next time you start FM
and it reads from the global file, your new application definition will
not be there. You have to copy the application definition in your local
file into the global file. Your problem with RW file not being seen may
simply be a result of that. The discussion of the structure app file is
at about 18:00 in the webinar.

Craig

- snipped -

With Fm11, there are now 2 copies of the maker.ini (userdata directory
and install directory) and 2 copies of the structapps file (local and
global, both available from the Structure menu in Fm11), and I'm betting
you're getting snarled in the combinations of these files.

Setting up files for structured use

2013-07-16 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2013-07-16-02T13:20Z

I need help setting up files for structured use by four persons. Since the
last time I set this up, the versions of the operating system, FrameMaker, and
Acrobat have changed.

Windows 7 Enterprise operating system
FrameMaker 11.0.2.384 (stand-alone) installed on workstation
Colleagues have FrameMaker 11 out of Technical Communication Suite
installed on their workstations
Acrobat XI Pro 11.0.1 installed on workstation
.book file and its children on a server on the local area network

I believe that I need to set up \?maker.ini and \?structapps.fm to facilitate
alternately using two versions of one standard.

I know that, in \?maker.ini, I can specify _one_ folder that contains
\?structapps.fm, the "rules" file, the .dtd and the transformation files. If I
specify a folder other than \?Structure in its default location, I want the
\?structapps.fm, the "rules" file, the .dtd, and the transformation files to be
on a server on the local area network. This works for using only _one_ version
of the standard.

I need to set up to alternately use _two_ versions of the standard.

I know that, in \?structapps.fm, in the structured applications, I can specify
various paths to different versions of the of the "rules" file, the .dtd, and
such.

Unfortunately, with the "rules" file and the .dtd on a server on the local area
network, more often than not, FrameMaker complains that it cannot read the
"rules" file. I have ensured that:

   1. In the structured application, the path to the "rules" file is correct.

   2. For the "rules" file and the folder containing it, the check box for
attribute "Read-only" has no check mark.

It seems as though I could set up to alternately use _two_ versions of one
standard by editing \?maker.ini and having two versions of it to specify
different locations on the server for the "structure" files. When needing to
change from one version of \?maker.ini to the other, I'd have to rename both to
ensure that only _one_ is present. This seems cumbersome (and a bit dangerous).

I hope that I'm missing something truly obscure (or even obvious) and that
there's an easier way to be flexible and to work faster, better, and cheaper.

Help, please.

?Thanks!

You can use the free Archive or Book Packager script to do this. It
moves all graphics to a single directory. You can find it here:

Be sure to get v2, at the "script attached" link. The "original script

Well, if you'll accept an American source, please see

So, I make the answer to your question as, "?.?.?.?an economic system
characterized by?.?.?.?distribution of goods that are determined mainly by
competition in a free market."

Also, please consider the following. It is a very-close paraphrasing of a
statement by a professor of accounting is his class many years ago.

The purpose of business is to make money. The purpose of business is _not_ to
produce a valuable good or to deliver a worthwhile service. The purpose of
business is to _make_money_.

And, if you'll allow an allusion from the Bible: "The _love_ of money is the
root of all evil." (emphasis added because it is often misquoted as "Money is
the root of all evil." DAS)

Perhaps Adobe has forgotten that we, the customers, also must make

Adobe introduces subscription-based licensing. So many of its users find
it an outstanding value that over time, most of them license software by
subscription. Adobe is rewarded for being innovative and Adobe serves
its customers better. Everybody wins.

Adobe ends its relationship with resellers over time so that,
eventually, all users license software directly from Adobe .. either
subscription or download or disks (at an extra cost).

This is also a success story for Adobe; it's rewarded because it's
providing a better service for its customers and at the same time, it's
doing better for its shareholders. That's how capitalism is supposed to
work.

Choice is the entire issue. Everyone who made the case for subscription
has a great point. It's not what I choose but I have no reason to tell
you subscription is bad for *you*.

Choice ... it's what humans do all the time. Adobe has removed the
choice from some percentage of its users and there's no reason for it.
Maybe Adobe has gotten to the point where it no longer believes
customers make Adobe successful. Maybe they think they're so big they
don't have to think about customers anymore; we, Adobe, make YOU
successful.

I don't know; fact is, they're doing their customers a disservice by
limiting our choice for how we license software from them. Subscriptions
are great, just give me back what I want and I'm perfectly content.

I never said Adobe "blames" anyone for anything. I am saying that Adobe
has shareholders and share values are important. Customers are important
too, but they are important because they improve share value (more
customers, better share values). However, customers are only valuable
when they are encouraged to part with their money, so to have customers
pay more frequently is better than when they don't.

The problem with cusomters is that they cost money to do business with.
The cost of customer management has a negative effect on share value.
So, cut the cost of doing business and improve share value. The
subscription model Adobe are rolling out does just that.

Obedience has nothing to do with it. Don't make it a human factor.
Humanity has nothing to do with this. This is economics.

You're side of the mark about resellers. Adobe locks down pricing and
availability of its software; you can't buy old versions of anything
from anybody ever and you can't get more than a few dollars of discount
from anybody. Having other people sell for you is generally a good
thing.

Ignoring the bit about buying old versions, as a former reseller, I can
quite confidently tell you that you are wrong.

Resellers are expensive to support and no longer bring real value to the
product. With the advance of Internet and peer support of products,
Adobe had long since removed the reseller from the channel. The
subscription model merely removes the last part of the retail chain.
Sure, there remain some resellers but they are concerned with large
customers who need specific licensing requirements. These are the ones
that for Adobe to do itself, are uneconomic.

Sorry, makes no sense. Customers (those that pay for stuff) always do
the right thing when they are relieved of their money.

Adobe is making this change in anticipation of other changes yet to be
announced.

Meh. It's just another way to do business. I have worked out that the
subscription model will cost me about twice much to keep getting access
to what I have now. It will disadvantage me in the future because I have
to continue to pay for something I do not have to continue to pay for

Basically it's an Open Source GPL project, so zero financing needed,
with a very basic core and plugins independently installable for most of
the functionality. We called it "Omni 2.0", after the very first
product I wrote, the first screen-oriented editor ever on CP/M 1.4 on
8080 (way before WordStar).

If there really is much interest, we can set it up as a SourceForge

We're not set on that name, or on much of anything else except GPL.

I have just heard a rumor that the CS Suite is going to available in future
only on an SaaS basis, by subscription. TCS/FrameMaker could follow?

I do wonder whether the accountants that run large corporates like Adobe
understand how important their software is to the countless thousands of
freelances who have to scrape every last penny to buy it - but at least then
they own something, not vapor that goes phut as soon as you stop paying for it.

For the last two decades FrameMaker, Illustrator, Acrobat and Dreamweaver have
been the rocks underpinning what I do. I'm far less sure about the future,
though.

Use the "Discuss This Page" functionality on the help pages (they also echo in
a strangely annoying way to the Adobe Forums) and Adobe's tech writing team
monitors the suggestions for the next build of the help.

How does a customer/user go about making changes on an Adobe website? And if
this is not possible for an arbitrary individual to do, who is the "us" you
refer to who have the capability to paste someone else's text into a page of
their site?

Rick Quatro generously provided the solution in a telephonic conversation.

?Max Hoffman, will you please do whatever necessary to get the following
procedure added to the help for FrameMaker?

NOTE: This is based on my telephonic conversation 2013-04-26-05 with
Rick Quatro (Carmen Publishing ( www.frameexpert.com/ ), 585-283-5045).
Files added to the book do not have to be valid.

SYMPTOM
In a structured book, in the Structure View window, the program displays the
top-level element in the book as .

MALFUNCTION
The parent element for the book is not applied to the top-level element.

CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. After adding structured files to the book, update the book. In the
Structure View window, the program displays the name of each top-level element
in each file. The program displays the top-level element in the book as
.

   2. In the Structure View window, choose . In the Edit Attributes
window, on the Elements tab, choose the Options... button. The Set Available
Elements window appears.

   3. In the Set Available Elements window, in the Show Tags For: area, in the
Valid Elements for Working Start to Finish option button, ensure a dot and
choose the Set button. The program sets and displays the available elements.

   4. On the Elements tab, choose the top-level element for the book. The
program changes to the name of the chosen element.

   5. In the Structure View, arrange elements to conform.

Again, many thanks to Rick Quatro. As many others have written before, "?The

Rick -

Yes; thanks for mentioning. I failed to remember and to mention that when I
try to update the book, FrameMaker hangs. It's hanging as I write this. I
have to use Task Manager to end process and force FrameMaker out.

So, now, the problematic file becomes a likely suspect.

Hi Dave,

After you add the structured files to the book, you have to update the book,
then the correct elements should show up in the structure view and element
catalog. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. Thank you
very much.

Windows 7 Enterprise SP 1

RAM: 4.00?GB
64-bit operating system
FrameMaker 11.0.1.382, stand-alone (AFAIK), installed on workstation .book and
.fm files on server on LAN per corporate requirement

I seldom need to create a structured book, and I first encountered this problem
at least four years ago using (probably version 7.2 or 8). Only twice have I
succeeded. I am completely at a loss as to why my success rate is so low.

FrameMaker help for version 11, as best I can tell, does not even treat the
subject of creating a structured _book_. Neither does the application
developers guide for 7.2. These references include information about
structured _files_?- but not structured _books_. If found nothing in the
FrameUsers archive and using FrameUsers search.

I reverted to consulting version 7 help. I followed the instructions in it
under "Creating structured book files" and under "Adding files to structured
books."

The files in the book are structured. They are associated with the correct
structured application. I have produced a .edd file from the applicable .dtd
file. I have imported element definitions from the .edd into the files and
into the book file. (One of the files is problematic in that when I try to
import element definitions into it, FrameMaker crashes. I "Mif washed"
that file to no good effect. I do not believe that this problematic file is
related to my inability to create a structured _book_.)

In the book window, the book is as I named it, as I fully expect. In the book
window, I choose the entry for the book, and I display the Structure View
window. In the Structure View window, the parent element is , and all
the entire book is indicated as not valid.

I cannot change the name of , and I cannot get FrameMaker to recognize
it as the parent element. It seems as though I can "get to square two or
three" but not further.

Help, please.

I am posting this for a co-worker.

In FrameMaker 11, I have set objects to be hotspots going to an external
URL. When I generate a PDF, the hotspots work, but the tooltip text that
I entered for each hotspot is not showing. Instead, when I hover over
the hotspot, I see the URL. Is this a bug, or do I need to do something

It's impossible to displease anyone by fixing bugs, or by improving
your QA.

There are a lot of serious UI bugs that were introduced in FM9 that
from what I've heard still haven't been fixed in FM11. You may remember you
asked me to send you a list of those bugs last year.
Here's another copy.

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

[snip]

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing
Alt-Tab again takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more than one
document is open) instead of back to the other application.

I eventually gave up on rearranging FM10's windows and pods, which
means I don't encounter most of those any more, but I'm probably 10-15% slower
as a result.

Usage question - subjunctive mood? (WAS: anyone looking for a writer?)

2013-04-08 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2013-04-08-01T11:40Z

Yes, "If I were looking . . . " is correct. It conveys the concept of
"conditional, contrary to fact": "I wasn't looking, but if I had been looking
. . .."

I choose to believe that those who might read or hear such an expression don't
consider it "hifalutin'" and accept it. ?Who knows? The reader or listener
might even learn something about the language.

I hope this isn't considered too "off topic".

Perhaps things have changed as our American English language devolves all
around us, but ... might we not better say "if I WERE looking" rather than "if
I WAS looking"? That is, is this not an untrue condition or wish, therefore
correctly expressed in the subjunctive mood?

Serious question ... If I'm "behind the curve" here, I'd like to know!

Many thanks to Ian and Scott for your suggestions, but unfortunately

After pouring through all the reference material I have, I am still

Hi Lisa,

I think you have misunderstood the rules a little. So try this:

element "Graphic"

{

is fm graphic element "Graphic";

attribute "illus" is fm property entity;

}

This will work if the "illus" attribute is defined as type ENTITY in the
DTD.

In your EDD remove the attribute definition for "illus". This will not
be needed in the FrameMaker environment because the read/write rule is
converting the XML attribute into a FrameMaker property. The type
mismatch was because the attribute was defined as an Integer in the EDD.

If the DTD does not define "illus" as ENTITY, then use this rule
instead:

attribute "illus" is fm property file;

That's all from memory, so I hope it all works for you.

Hello All,

I am working a project using FrameMaker 8.0p277.

I have a conflict between my Read-Write Rules and my template (my EDD, I
presume) that has me stumped. When I do a check of my rules I get the
following error:

"Type mismatch for the FrameMaker element (Graphic). The type defined by
the read/write rules is different from that defined by the template."

The link takes me to the "is fm graphic element" statement below.

My rules are:

element "Graphic"

{

is fm graphic element "Graphic";

fm property entity value is "illus";

}

And I have the following defined in my EDD:

Element (Graphic): Graphic

Attribute list

Name: illus Integer Required

Initial graphic element format

In all contexts.

Insert imported graphic file.

Am I missing something that is totally obvious to anyone?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Line numbering tables in FM11?

2013-02-25 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2013-02-25-01T19:55Z

Tori -

I've not had to work with line numbering, so I wonder whether numbering
the rows of the tables will suffice.

The numbering in each table could start with "1," and when combined with
each table's number (I assume that the tables are numbered), this scheme
will provide unique identification for each row. For example, "Table
14-3, row 98."

If your customer can't work with such a solution because "it's different
from how Word does it," then you _do_ have a challenge.

It turns out there's an additional wrinkle to this: client now wants
line numbers to be contiguous through the entire, 470+ page document.
Because Word does it this way.

So I'm not sure Frame is going to give the client what they want for
this job, and I'm definitely sure that autonumbered paras within the
tables would not satisfy client.

Bugger.

Fellow Framers,

I'm mostly a lurker, but have found the wealth of knowledge shared by
this list's members to be quite helpful!

I have a manual (I'm on Frame 8) in which I've used conditional text to
show/hide tables, text, parts lists depending on if it's for the
American market or European.

This manual originated for a US-made product so it started life with
8.5x11 (US-letter size) pages. And it didn't even occur to me that it
might need to be A4-sized for the European market.

Is there a good way to switch back and forth between A4 and 8.5x11 page
sizes, depending on which version of a book you want to print?

I have the sneaking suspicion that I will have to break this into two
separate books, but I figured I'd ask to see if anyone had
recommendations.

Thanks,

Lise

All,

Sorry I couldn't respond to this thread earlier. Driving much of the day
yesterday and I don't "do e-mail" while driving. J

I am seriously hoping that there was a serious misunderstanding between Ken
Poshedly and the tech support person he spoke with. Maybe a language issue one
of a definition of what a "data file" is.

For the record, there is absolutely no restriction in FrameMaker - any version
- as to where FrameMaker document files (.fm files), FrameMaker book files, or
any assets used by same may reside on a user's system. As long as Windows can
open the file for input and output, FrameMaker can open the document or book.
FrameMaker documents may be on the system volume or any other volume available
under Windows including external drives, SSDs, thumb drives, network shares,
etc.

Then there are the "data files" used internally by FrameMaker including those
in where X:\Program
Files (x86)\Adobe\AdobeFrameMaker11 is the location where you designate that
FrameMaker be installed and
  where username is the
user's Window login ID. Maybe there was some issue of what happens if you
designate a location for FrameMaker installation that isn't the system volume
or if you move the directory to someplace other than the
system volume. I have not experienced problems with FrameMaker 11 installed on
a volume other than the system volume. I have not attempted to muck around with
location of the directory which could be playing with fire
with not only FrameMaker, but other Windows applications.

Nonetheless, assuming a reasonably normal installation of FrameMaker 11, you
should have no problem with storing your FrameMaker documents and associated
assets anywhere that you can open a file within your system's file system.

Seriously? I can understand network-based locations causing issues, but I have
_never_ seen a problem where an executable (FrameMaker or otherwise!) is on one
drive and the "data" files are on a separate drive _on the *same* system_.

In fact, I do this right now - my C drive is the usual location for all
executables (FrameMaker, Office, compilers, etc.) and my E drive contains all
my other files (including the books and files I work on).

And, I do not have any problems with this setup whatsoever. I am surprised that
Adobe thinks that this would be a problem in any way! If really accurate, this
would be a strange, and completely unacceptable, artificial constraint.

Short answer: no; there's no way to use paragraph styles to enforce initial
captals. You could force all caps, as a quick hack.

More-relevant answer: You shouldn't do this, anyway. I feelt that indexes
should use capitalizattion as driven by tthe indexed terms. So, proper nouns
and such get capitalized; plain-old terms don't; and maybe your special terms
(e.g., GUI elements) follow capitalization of the user interface.

It's a big index and I would like to be able to force all words to have

workstations are still using it. So, as they might say in the City of New

  1. What was the last version of FrameMaker for the Mac that was released,
and when was it released?

  2. If FrameMaker is still running on Mac workstations, how is that done?

  3. For FrameMaker still running on Mac workstations, what is the latest
version and when was it released?

Watchman asleep: watched folders query

2012-11-21 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2012-11-21-03T18:55Z

Rob -

I've seen similar behavior several times during the last year and a half or so.

NOTE: Staff of Adobe who monitor this list, please read on. This
posting might also be related to recent postings, Subject: FM 9 Blinking
linked images.

There are only two of us here who have FrameMaker in this otherwise "Microsoft"
shop.

Here's my situation.
FrameMaker 9.0p255 installed stand-alone on my workstation
Acrobat Professional 9.5.2
Distiller Professional 9.5.2295
Windows 7 Enterprise SP 1
Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 Duo CPU 2.8?GHz
4.0?GB memory installed
64-bit operating system

To conform to _corporate_requirements_, production files?- including text inset
source files, graphic files (?Why don't we call these "graphic inset" files?),
and watched folders are on a server on the LAN in our facility. This, to
ensure that production files are backed up. Files on our workstations are
_not_ backed up. Generally, FrameMaker performs reliably.

>From time to time, staff of corporate IT push updates to Adobe Acrobat or
>Adobe Reader or both. Staff of corporate IT allows both Acrobat and Reader to
>be installed on one workstation at the same time. This has to do with using
>Adobe LiveCycle. Still, heeding Dov Isaacs' admonitions, when I discover
>Reader on my workstation, I remove it.

After such updates, I have found that Distiller has lost its settings for
Watched Folders. The person at corporate who set up such updates helped
troubleshoot how the updates to _Acrobat_ and _Reader_ were affecting
_Distiller_. He did not find any clues to help solve the mystery. So, after
each update, I "get to" set my watched folders again?.?.?..

So, I wonder whether this problem is related to the problem of files on network
drives.

If FrameMaker installed and used as described above performed
still-more-reliably, we'd have just that much more reason and justification to
continue using FrameMaker. And believe me, the subject of FrameMaker versus
Word comes up far more frequently than I care to deal with it.

So, while "holding Word at arm's length," I wish all in the US a "?Happy
Thanksgiving!"

OT: Windows 7 operating systems, Windows Explorer failing to display files

2012-08-27 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com

Penelope, thanks for the further refinement.

For me, closing and reopening Windows Explorer has had no effect. Neither have
restarting or shutting down and starting up the workstation, so OMHV. I seem
to have no influence (let alone control) in the matter.

Dave,

I've seen this bug in Windows off and on for years, perhaps since XP. I first
try F5, which rarely works. Oftentimes, closing down the Explorer window and
reopening it will force a refresh, and if not that, then a reboot is worth a
try. I have occasionally gone to a command prompt window to make sure I really
put the file where I think I did. In my experience, the command prompt always
displays files correctly, confirming that this is an Explorer bug. It has
(happily) been a long time since I've encountered it.

Thanks, Lise, for the additional tidbit.

Below, Lise points out that pressing the F5 key to refresh the display for
files on a network resolves the failure to display, and that the failure to
display does not happen when using C: \.

For me, pressing the F5 key has had no positive effect, either on the LAN or on
C: \.

Dave,

I've experienced something like this, though I think it's strictly due to the
speed (or lag) of our network/servers. I've often saved files to a network
location, and then have to press F5 (refresh) to get them to appear in Windows
Explorer. If I save files to my C: drive, however, I do not experience this.
Other co-workers report the same behavior.

This was both when I was on WinXP (32-bit), and now (for only a few weeks so
far) on Win7 (64-bit)...hence why I think it's the network and not the
operating system.

I've basically learned to live with it (it's trained me to always press F5 to
make sure I'm seeing all files), but it could also be that the bar has been set
pretty low as far as my expectations of our IT service desk.

OT: Windows 7 operating systems, Windows Explorer failing to display files

2012-08-27 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2012-08-27-01T16:20Z

Framers using Windows 7 operating systems:

My setups: At work: Windows 7 Enterprise SP 1; at home: Windows 7 Home
Premium SP 1

NOTE: If you have experienced the problem described below, please
reply?- off-list, if you wish?- so I can document to the Service Desk staff
that, "It's not just me," which I know it's not.

Intermittently, irregularly, in both operating systems, Windows Explorer fails
to display files I just saved.

At work, I save >?99?% of files into a security group of folders on a server on
the LAN. At home, I save >?99?% of files onto the hard drive of my workstation.

Immediately after saving one or more files to either place, I start the files'
native programs or use Windows Explorer to open the files. I navigate to the
folder into which I just saved the file or files. The entries for the files do
not appear.

I choose the folder that contains the files, display the window for the
folder's properties, and confirm that the "Hidden" check box has
_no_check_mark_. I've even applied "Hidden" to the folder and then reversed
the setting. Still no just-saved files displayed.

As of this morning, the most-recent twist is that Windows Explorer displayed
some files that I expected to see but that it did not display last Friday.
Because one of my mapped network drives did not appear in Windows Explorer, I
was advised to log off and to log back on, which I did. Windows Explorer
displayed the "missing" drive just fine. _And_ again displayed the list of
files as it had appeared last Friday.

I suspect that there's a problem with Windows Explorer's caching of its
displays or some such. So, to pursue a fix to the problem, I have to report it
to the staff of the Service Desk. This is where your confirming my experience
comes in.

"?Thanks!" in advance for your time and interest.

EDDs for MIL-STD-38784

2012-03-21 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com

Mike -

Based on my experience, there is no DTD (on which an EDD would be based)
for MIL-STD 38784. There doesn't need to be. I expect that you'll be
required to conform to MIL-STD 2361 and 40051-1 or 40051-2 or both. For
2361, there is a DTD available. You can use FrameMaker to make your
EDD.

The S-Tagger filter from Trados is a very convenient way of translating from
FM. I have used it for 10 different languages, including Russian. You export
rtf files with color-coded tags from FM, so it is very easy to see what to
translate, and what not to touch. Cross-references (like "page 65") are
colored, so the translator knows that that should be left as is. When
importing the translated file, S-Tagger provides you with a list of any
errors that have been made (like deleting a tag by accident), so you can
easily fix it. With mif files it is much more difficult to see what to

For one translation, we provided and received .fm files. For the other
translation, we provided and received .rtf files.

My thought was to provide and receive .fm files; then, convert the
translated .fm files into on-station help. Translate once; use twice.

Hi dave,

What exactly are you looking for in terms of consideration?

Translating FM files from English to Portuguese shouldn't be any problem for
a translation agency. Framemaker will support Portuguese in any FM version.
The specific availability of Portuguese dictionary and hyphenation in FM 9
and higher only gives you more control on spelling and hyphenation, but as
Portuguese fits in the basic latin character set it will be displayed ok I
any FM version (5.5, 6, 7, ..).

The procedure for creating HTML help or CHM is the same as you would use for
your English source files. When compiling the CHM set the language to
Portuguese to get Portuguese hyperlinks (for Next, Previous, etc).

If you've never translated FM files before, my advise is to find a
translation agency nearby. Save your FM files as MIF and send that to them.
In return you'll receive MIF files with Portuguese text, open these in FM
and save as FM. That's it. Again, this will work for any FM version.

Translating English to Portuguese

2011-11-09-03T18:15Z

FrameMaker 9.0p255

Mif2Go 33U43 (with FrameMaker 8.n)

I've addressed this to three e-mail lists, so my apologies to all who receive
it more than once.

Will you please help identify the considerations of translating a manual and
then producing on-station help from the translated files?

In on-station help for FrameMaker 9.0p255, I found verbiage to the effect that
FrameMaker 8.0 has "Dictionary and hyphenation support . . ." for Portuguese.

Given:
  1. Source files are to be in English in FrameMaker 9.0p255.
  2. Source files are to be translated from English to Portuguese.
  3. From translated source files, we will need to produce either
a. HTML help (.htm) without context sensitivity or
b. Compiled HTML help (.chm) with context sensitivity

The source files are in FrameMaker 7.n, and we are confident that we can open
and save the source files through 8.n and into 9.n.

?Thanks!

Non-breaking hyphen in Index entries

2011-05-24 Thread dave.st...@gdc4s.com
2011-05-24-02T12:10Z

Nancy -

I suggest and recommend editing "baking at high altitudes" to be "baking, high
altitudes."

This makes the index entry more concise and might shorten it enough to avoid
wrapping to the next line. Sorry, but I don't know whether I've solved this
problem otherwise. If it can be done otherwise, I'm sure someone on this list
will post the solution.

Subject: Non-breaking hyphen in Index entries

I am being driven mad by a teensy technical question that I KNOW I have solved
in the past.

I have document with chapter-page numbering, and an index entry that is a tad
long, so it breaks like this:

apple pie, baking at high altitudes, 4-
6

When I go to the correct Reference page, I find the format set up as you would
expect:

<$chapnum>-<$pagenum>

I have tried replacing the hyphen with Esc hyphen h and with \+

Neither works!

What am I missing? I know I have done this before.

Many thanks.

Since both of the second pair of titles are freely available on the
Web, I suspect it would be worthwhile to obtain them. :-)

There aren't many XSL-FO texts out there, and Pawson's is as good as you
will find (I would mention Ken Holman's materials as well). The vendors
(RenderX and Antenna House) also have some good educational materials
and examples.

For XSLT, I recall that Tidewell's book was a good primer, but other
authors (Kay, Tennyson) provide much more depth and breadth with a wider
variety of examples. The XSLT and XPath Recommendations are also good
source material -- they can be read and understood by mortals (unlike
the XSL-FO Recommendation).

Nothing can come close to a real-world project as a motivator for
understanding these technologies and exposing your knowledge gaps.

Good luck!

To those of you who are experienced transforming information tagged with
mark-up languages -

I have cross-posted this to several lists. My apologies for
duplications you receive.

Please offer your assessments of the following professional readings for
individual development. More-specifically, do you believe it would be
worth the expenditure to obtain the second pair of titles?

I have:
_XSLT_, 2d Ed, 2008, by Tidwell and
_XSL-FO_, 1st Ed, 2002, by Pawson (No 2d Ed "in sight.")

I have had recommended to me but have not obtained:

_XSL-FO_in_the_Real_World_
