[Framers] Track Text Edits

2018-08-06 Thread gill6034
I am using Frame 2017. I am trying to turn on Track Text edits but it doesn't
seem to want to work. It doesn't display the deleted text. I configured the
colors but they don't display. I enable it for the book or document, make some
changes and then try to accept them, but then it says that Track Text edits is
not enabled. Is this a bug? Anyone else experienced this? How do I fix it?

Thanks,

Gillian

[Framers] Responsive HTML layout

2018-06-01 Thread gill6034
I am trying to publish a Responsive HTML file. Before publishing, I edited the
STS file and edited the azure layout. I changed the color of the background,
and then added a company logo. After saving the changes and building my help
file, Frame ignored all of my layout changes.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this a bug or am I missing something.

Thanks,

Gillian

[Framers] Mapping Styles in FrameMaker

2017-07-19 Thread gill6034
We have a new company template for FrameMaker docs.

We have a lot of legacy guides, and we're now required to switch all of the
docs to the new templates. The new templates use different paragraph and
character format names.

I need some sort of script to rename, or remap the old names to the new names,
so that when I import the new template, it automatically changes the text to
the new formats.

Does anyone know of some sort of tag mapping tool or script for doing this?

Thanks,
Gillian

I agree.

If Mktg wants something that specialized, they need to provide the bullet as a
scalable font.

I'd tell marketing my tool can't do that so if they want custom

[Framers] Custom graphic as bullet

2017-05-17 Thread gill6034
Frame Gurus!

Using:
Unstructured Frame
TCS 2017

Our marketing department wants us to use a customized bullet. It's more of a
graphic, because it's not in the character palette. They use InDesign so they
inserted it as a graphic. They want us to use it as a bullet in all of our
bullet lists.

So how do I make a customized bullet list with a customzed graphic? The
Character Designer does not allow for inserting a graphic to create a bullet.
Any ideas?

Thanks,
Gillian

Wow! Thank you all for the lightning-fast responses.

What we know about Salesforce doc is that each department seems to use
something different to create and deliver its content. Their developer
docs, for example, are created using Flare. (That's one pro in Flare's
favor.) Their Help Center is based on Knowledge with custom Visualforce
pages. But we don't know what they use to create that Help, which would
really be nice to know.

We are considering divorcing the support and help, creating a Help Center
that does not run on Knowledge. It's just a thought at this stage though.
We're supposed to explore a path with Knowledge and a path without
Knowledge.

If anyone else has any input, I'd love to hear it.

Thanks again!

Unstructured FrameMaker hasn't really changed much since version
5.5.6. There are some useful new features layered on top, but if you
know how to use any version you can quickly get up to speed on any
other. Any competent hiring manager should know that.

If the company is using DITA (highly unlikely given they're on 7.2),
upgrading to FrameMaker 13 wouldn't magically change the source.

In any case, "I need to upgrade to the latest version to keep my
skills up to date" seems like a nonstarter argument. If you want your
company to buy new software, you need to justify the cost with some
alleged benefits. And if you did a cost-benefit analysis of
alternatives to FM 7.2, FM 13 would not necessarily be the best
choice.

Commenting in Acrobat Bug

2015-06-17 Thread gill6034
Has anyone else had this problem:

In Acrobat, after making a PDF, I Save As > Reader Extended PDF > Enable
Commenting & Measuring. Then when I give it to someone to comment on it in
Adobe Reader, they get a message saying that the PDF has changed and commenting
is disabled and to do a Save As Copy and put rights on that version. I do all
that and it doesn't fix the problem.

However, if the user has Adobe Reader DC, then they can comment on the PDF
without issue.

Is this a bug in Reader, is there a solution other than upgrading to DC?

Thanks

P4V

Good day everyone,

For the last few years, my company has been working towards
single-sourcing the documentation we create (e.g. user manuals and
integrated program help) for all of our products. We have one big
product and quite a few smaller products, with each one having its own
user manual and integrated help. We use Adobe FrameMaker 11 and
RoboHelp 10 to create and manage the content for our user manuals and
integrated help respectively. We also use Perforce P4V for version
control. Content typically is authored in FrameMaker first before being
exported into RoboHelp as a .book file, which is then used to build our
integrated help system.

Currently, half of our smaller products are single-sourced while the
rest are curated by hand. We'd eventually like to have all of our
products be single-sourced. However, even with the products that are
already single-sourced, we're having some issues with how our authoring
software interacts with our version-control software. We've also had
problems converting back and forth between .FM and .MIF formats. My
question here is two-fold.

First, what is a good workflow(s) for single-sourcing content using
FrameMaker, RoboHelp, and version control software? Second, are there
are other tools that we could use for such a workflow? For instance,
there's been some consideration about switching from FrameMaker to
MadCap Flare. What is MadCap Flare better at doing than FM for
single-sourcing? What can be done to convert from using FM to MadCap
Flare? What would be potentially lost in doing
such a switch? We've also been considering switch to the Adobe Creative
Cloud, but before we make a decision one way or another, we'd like to
nail these details down.

Any and all insight would be greatly appreciated. If further details
are required, I'd be happy to give them to the best of my ability.

RoboHelp or Frame to confluence

2015-01-02 Thread gill6034
Happy New Year everyone!

I am using Structured Frame and doing DITA in Tech Comm Suite 5. Some of my
SMEs want to proofread everything in Confluence. What is the best method/format
to export from Frame or Robohelp to Confluence?

Thanks

Opening in DITA class in San Jose, CA

2014-07-08 Thread gill6034

Hey Everyone,

My husband started a new job last week and therefore, cannot attend the ComTech
Advanced Publishing for DITA class on July 15 - 17 in San Jose.

The course costs $1,320. At the moment, ComTech is holding his payment toward
another course in the future, b ut they will also transfer his seat in the
class to a different student.

If any of you know of somebody who has already taken ComTech’s DITA Bootcamp
and now wishes to take the advanced course, please contact me. ComTech will
transfer the cost to the new person and refund my husband's money.

If you've taken DITA BootCamp, then you know that ComTech puts on great
classes.

Here's the link to the class:

Thanks,

DITA to Drupal Round Tripping and DITA to Confluence round-tripping

2014-06-05 Thread gill6034
Has anyone ever used Drupal as a CMS and/or front-end tool and/or Confluence?
The Support Guys want to use DITA as an authoring tool. The KB site is
currently authored in Confluence and then ported to Drupal. If anyone has any
experience with this, I would appreciate your words of wisdom on this scenario.

Thanks

Best CMS to use with DITA

2014-02-14 Thread gill6034
DITA experts,

In your own personal experience, what do you think is the best CMS to use with
DITA, specifically, the Oxygen authoring tool? We could do either self-hosting,
or a SAAS model.

I've used Subversion and EasyDita. I don't consider Subversion to be a real
document CMS, and EasyDita has some issues.

I think Trados is too expensive and we don't translate yet, so we really don't
need all that.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: mac and Tech Comm Suite

2013-08-16 Thread gill6034
Craig,

You can't run it directly on a Mac. You have to run it in a Windows VM. I use
VMWare Fusion with a Windows 7 OS. Works great!

I'm considering replacing my current windows laptop with a Mac laptop. I know
that some framers are using Macs with the latest Adobe TCS software, and I
would appreciate any brief comments on the benefits/hassles of working with TCS
on a Mac and what contortions have worked best for you to make this work.

You can send comments to me offlist if you'd like, or post to the list if you
think there is general value to the posting.

Thank you.
