Re: [Framers] Aircraft DTDs ATA iSpec2200 SGML EDDS

2022-01-28 Thread ian.proudfoot
Hi John,
Thank you for the kind words. I think that the 'golden age' of ATA iSpec
development has long passed. I'm just one of the few with in-depth ATA DTD
experience who hasn't yet retired! Happy to say that there is still a great
need for this knowledge and it's currently keeping me very busy 

There has always been a lot of resistance to FrameMaker's SGML export in some
circles. That is often due to misinformation, but in some cases a lack of
understanding by FM application developers makes it too easy to export invalid
SGML. That's very unfortunate because with a little care FrameMaker's use for
ATA or Mil-spec content works very well.

Hi Rick:

Ian Proudfoot is one of few persons who knows about ATA iSpec2200 DTD. To add
to Ian's comment. A defense client told us USAF does not accept FM SGML files,
due to EDD problems? The last we saw FM SGML was Version 6. Our guess is that
QANTAS Australia may have what you are after, they have a small fleet of B747
400. However, today, Boeing PR folks claim sales of new B747-800 Freighters to
China.

Of interest to the list, Gulfstream aerospace just got a waiver from China CAA
to allow bilingual English-Mandarin AMMs, but English version rules.

Contact us off list, our interest is Simplified English which is part of ATA
iSpec2200.

Thanks to Ian for posting ATA info.

Hi Rick,
If the manuals are to be published as ATA iSpec2200 SGML, then you will need
to buy/obtain the specification and DTD set from Airlines for America.
https://publications.airlines.org/CommerceProductDetail.aspx?Product=313
Maybe your customer will have copies that they can provide for you?

Unfortunately I no longer have access to any of my previous ATA EDDs and
templates. If SGML is the required output then FDK or ExtendScript will
probably be essential for the AMM. Maybe even the Structure API. Some of the
ATA structures don't play well with FrameMaker objects.

Re: [Framers] S1000D Projekts with FM

2019-12-19 Thread ian.proudfoot
Hello,
S1000D version 4.0.1 has been built-in to FrameMaker since FM10. It works
for a limited sub-set of data module types, but does include the ability to
publish data modules from a publication module which is presented as a
FrameMaker structured book.

If you need a different version of S1000D it is still possible to download a
simple application pack for S1000D version 2.2.1 from the Adobe website.
Other versions could be implemented too but there's a lot of scripting
involved and the source code for that has not been publicly shared.

There are commercial options too from OneStrand as part of their R4i S1000D
suite. Mekon has the Eclipse S1000D package.

I hope this helps? Just ask if you need more information.

Re: [Framers] Question About Revision History.

2019-11-27 Thread ian.proudfoot
I think there may be different ideas about what a revision history can be. From
my background in aerospace technical publications we always had a 'Record of
Revisions' page in the frontmatter of all tech docs. In the days of paper
loose-leaf documents this was where the person who incorporated the revised
pages would sign to say that the document had been correctly updated.

The other way to look at it is to include a unique version or revision number
somewhere obvious in the document. I would consider that to be mandatory in all
tech docs, but it need not refer to any of the previous revisions. It just has
to be in a logical format so that it's really easy to check if you have the
current version, but also that it's the correct version for the
equipment/system in use.

Rick,
Revision history is often more of a regulatory requirement than a nice-to-have

I know many of us, as am I, on this list are Adobe Partners and I was under
the impression (perhaps incorrectly) that:

1. Adobe had to ask you to be a partner before you get added to/have
access to the list.
2. Adobe monitored the list and didn't allow anyone to sign up unless
they could be verified.

Over the last week and a half, I have been flamed incessantly from trolls
stating that "We found your company is related to "Partner of Adobe Computer
Software," and offering to sell me a list of potential clients to bolster my
business. The email address is a bogus address that changes constantly
despite the exact same message being sent, and there is no other contact
information such as a valid name/contact number provided. I have been simply
sending these cr*p emails to the trash, but the last straw was today when I
received an 8 am phone call from one of these spammers, w/ a very heavy
accent and the first words out of their mouths was "We found that your
company . . "

Has anyone else been receiving this kind of garbage? Can Adobe me made aware
of this and perhaps verify to whom they have recently given access to this
list and maybe kill it that way?

Just a stream of thought - and TIA.

Re: [Framers] Mixed DTDs in a single book

2019-07-26 Thread ian.proudfoot
Hi Rick,
I have done this for several applications. The easiest way is if your book
components are XML files already is to set the properties for each XML book
component (Esc b c p). If you're using FrameMaker documents as your book
components then it's not quite as simple. It may be possible to set the XML
app on a folder component so that all sub-documents of that folder use the
same XML app.
After that I've used ExtendScript to manage the correct XML application for
each file, but that does require a custom book save script.

The other thing that needs consideration is whether you are saving the
entire book to XML or just its component files.

Suggestions are appreciated.

Re: [Framers] Format of XML element attributes

2019-07-24 Thread ian.proudfoot
Hi Cuc Tu,
There's absolutely nothing wrong with spaces around the = in an attribute
it's still well-formed XML which should be all that matters. Why would it be
unacceptable when the XML specification permits it and some XML editors
create it that way? It really does not matter and if an XML system can't
handle it then the limitation is with that system.

Howdy Framers.

I am saving out structured XML. Frame inserts spaces in the attribute =
"value" (should be attribute="value"), which is not acceptable (sloppy code
they tell me). Can that be changed?

Also, extra table element attributes are inserted, such as column width.
None of that is acceptable, either. I can only have the attributes defined
by the DTD. Is there something I need to add to the R/W Rules file to
suppress that? My R/W Rules file is very limited and I only have the include
iosall.rw and a graphic element.

Thanks,

Has anyone installed the 32-bit version of FrameMaker 2019? If so, can you
check the date on the IsoConverter.dll? I want to see if it has been updated
since the FrameMaker 2017 version?

Background: when I import a CGM file into FrameMaker 2019, it automatically
gets cropped to the content area, giving me a smaller anchored frame. When I
import the same image into FrameMaker 2017, all of the white space around
the image is imported, making the containing anchored frame much larger. I
am wondering if this is a function of an updated import filter for CGM

Hi Rick,

the problem is, that Extendscript seems to have forgotten about "node"-object
in 64-bit. In 32-bit it works.

All items are added to treeview object instead of the nodes they should go to.

Re: [Framers] FM2019 - 32/64-bit?

2018-09-25 Thread ian.proudfoot
Lin,
The specific problem that has affected the 64 bit version is due to a
problem with the ScriptUI tree view control. ScriptUI is the way we build
the User Interface for ExtendScript projects. In this case the tree view
does not show any text or allow nodes to be expanded. I have some
applications where this is a critical part of the workflow. Everything works
perfectly on 32 bit version.

This is probably a stupid question, but my understanding is that a scripting
language is pure text interpreted by whichever interpreter (in this case
ExtendScript) is installed. If that's the case, does it matter which version
of FM you create the script in? Does the 32-bit version have different
command words and variables or syntax from the 64-bit?

NB: Not a scripter of any sort, haven't looked to see.

Re: [Framers] API or ExtendScript function for Read Application Definitions

2018-08-11 Thread ian.proudfoot
Hi Rick that's odd, as I use it in a couple of applications without any
problems. I'll look at my code and see if I've missed anything.

Hi Ian,

This doesn't appear to work. I open the custom structapps.fm document and
use this:

CallClient ("FmDispatcher", doc.id);

where doc is a valid FrameMaker document. But then when I open an XML file,
it doesn't use the settings in the custom structapps.fm. I want to read the
custom structapps.fm file and have it used for the rest of the session or
until I change it. Thanks.

Hi Rick,
Try this for ExtendScript...

CallClient ('FmDispatcher', structappsfile.id);

Structappsfile is a FrameMaker document object and you have to pass its
Object ID as the second argument.

I hope that helps?

Re: [Framers] Single Doctype, Multiple Applications

2018-07-31 Thread ian.proudfoot
Rick, although I couldn't find any info on the options here is an example
from my 2011 archive:

This must be placed after the XML declaration but before the root element.

I just tried it and it still works.

Hi Rick,
There is a poorly documented special processing instruction that could be
what you need. It was originally used to help with S1000D support where
everything uses the same doctype of 'dmodule'. I can't find any mention of
it in the maker.ini guide which was where it is configured if I remember
correctly... Nothing in the struct app developer's guides either. I'll keep
looking.
For the Adobe S1000D applications it was handled using ExtendScript where
the selected XML file was opened silently using the built-in E4X support in
ES and the relevant structural clues used to determine the correct
Structured Application to use.

I have a bunch of DITA concepts, but about a dozen different templates. I
want to have a structured application for each one, so I can specify

Re: [Framers] When/which was the first 32-bit version of FM?

2018-06-23 Thread ian.proudfoot
Hi Klaus,
>From memory I was using FrameMaker 4 and then FrameBuilder on Windows 3.11.
They were both 32 bit versions running on the Win 32S 32-bit sub-system. It
was quite unreliable with the Win32s often crashing and leaving FrameMaker
running but without any connection to the OS, very weird.

Dear all,

We know that the first Windows port of FM was for Win 3.11 must have been a
16-bit version.
And According to the Sneak Peak review at the tekom last november we know
that a 64-bit version is in the pipeline (intended for Win7 upwards).
So I'm wondering, when the first 32-bit version of FM was issued for Windows
(and which Windows). What was the FM-version of this edition?

Any ideas?
