RE: Single sourcing from Frame and a wiki ... or something ...

2012-06-27 Thread mathieu jacquet

Unfortunately I can only reply that we have the same problem, and that I ended
up writing docs straight in the wiki (and banging my head on walls). One of ou
dev did a nice job to produce neat HTMLs from the Wiki, but it is still very
frech (we're currently profreading the first user's guide written this way).
For PDF export, nothing matching PDF produced from FM has been done yet.

What I can say is that I am not happy with that, but devs are, because now I'm
using THEIR tool, and them not MINE. But I'm the sole writer and they're
stronger than me... :).

Any help on that question would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Mathieu

You may want to look at the Confluence wiki. I know that there is a DITA
Confluence tool (Dita2Wiki?) and WebWorks ePublisher will also convert FM to
Confluence.
However, I don’t know if it’s possible to go the other way, or to round-trip
content between FM DITA and Confluence. According to Sarah Maddox’s book on
wikis, Confluence will import and export DocBook XML so that might be another
option.

I’m sure others will comment on this.

Hi everyone

Our docs team (4 of us) creates a many-thousand-page multi-chapter user manual
in unstructured Frame. Lots of tables and cross-refs.
Conditional text used to publish several variants. Published as PDFs a couple
of times a year, delivered online.

And the engineers (about 80) have a wiki that's a mish-mash of internal feature
development info, some of which ends up in the user
 manual.

I've been asked to make the user manual and the internal docs use the same
source, which both writers and engineers would write.
We want to work collaboratively, stop duplicating effort and come much closer
to real-time updates.

I'll need to include version control, content re-use, status tagging (e.g.
draft/final), read-only access, and delivery as PDF and
HTML. While I'm at it, I'd like to do automated builds and publish ebooks.

The engineers would like the wiki to be the source. The writers want to stay
with FM. I'm prepared to make everyone change tools
(*grin*) but only if we have to.

As a complicating factor, the engineers are all on Linux. Getting an FM licence
per engineer would blow my budget (Adobe, how about
selling a site licence???), and they'd have to run it in Virtual Box. I'm not
seeing a happy ending there.

I've got plenty of implementation time and can lay my mitts on a programmer or
two. Budget's not yet set but prob around $20K.

So ...

Does anyone know of a good tool for round-tripping Framemaker -- Wiki?

Should I be looking at XML?

Any other thoughts on how I should tackle this?

Many thanks

Rebecca

Probably, but I already own MIF2Go and have it generating compatible
XHTML. The challenge is doing it in bulk, converting a whole
FrameMaker book to a Confluence space.

I only mentioned WebWorks because ePublisher Designer has
off-the-shelf support for Confluence, so it seems like the obvious
choice, and maybe would be if you were using Confluence 3.x.

RE: warnings, cautions, notes in sw documentation

2011-08-01 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi hessiansx4,

Here is how we define them in our doc:

. Warning mention (+ pictogram): WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, can result in death or serious injury.

. Caution mention (+ picto): CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous
situation which, if not avoided, can result in minor or moderate injury.

. Caution mention (without picto): CAUTION, used without the safety alert
symbol, indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, can
result in equipment damage.

We talk about equipment damage because our soft is used for remote equipment
control.

Variables in headings - Formatting issue

2011-07-30 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

I'm using FM9 on Windows 7 64-bit.

I have a number of variables in headings. Some of my headings are defined as
small capitals.

When I import a text inset including this kind of headings, variables appear
in lower case and I have to apply default font on each of them (after text
conversion).

Have you encountered this problem yourself?

Another way to isolate adjacent markers without changing the text is to put the
cursor at the back of the second of the two markers. Then hit shift-left arrow
to move the cursor one character back (same process you might use to extend the
range of highlighted text, one character at a time). Of course you can start
from the other side of the adjacent markers and use shift-right arrow.

How would you manage that? I tried cutting the marker to paste it
elsewhere (for example one character to the right) in my reference, but
I cannot even select it, the whole text inset is highlighted then.

Are you sure the marker is part of the container document, not the text inset?
If so, put the insertion point to the right of the marker. Use the left arrow
key to move it between the marker and the text inset. Then press Crtrl-space to
insert a non-breaking space between the two. Then, if you wish, you should be
able to select and cut the marker.

Xref marker following Text inset

Another way to isolate adjacent markers without changing the text is to put the
cursor at the back of the second of the two markers. Then hit shift-left arrow
to move the cursor one character back (same process you might use to extend the
range of highlighted text, one character at a time). Of course you can start
from the other side of the adjacent markers and use shift-right arrow.

2011-07-20 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear Framers,

I am using unstructured FM 9 on 64-bit Windows 7.

Here is my problem: I have a number of text insets, in a file, for which the
character immediately following the inset is a X-ref marker.

When updating the text inset, the marker disappears, leading to an unresolved
X-ref problem afterwards.

How would you manage that? I tried cutting the marker to paste it elsewhere
(for example one character to the right) in my reference, but I cannot even
select it, the whole text inset is highlighted then.

Thank you all for your help,
Mathieu.

RE: FM Book - New file = New page?

2011-05-30 Thread mathieu jacquet

Thank you all -

In fact I'm trying to find the best possible way to atomize (or
modularize...or granularize..I don't know which term suits best) our
information, to avoid redundancy and be able to reuse redundant content easily
between books. This was an option in my mind (create files including atomic
information, then assemble them as needed in books). But as pointed out by
Richard and others, better use text insets instead.

Cheers and thank you again !
Mathieu.

No. In keeping with FM's book paradigm, an FM file is intended to be a
chapter/section. For each file, you decide whether it starts on a right,
 left, or next available page.

I suspect it would be quite difficult to program the application to flow text
across chapter files without treating each as a discreet entity. And I don't
see the point. If you want a section of text to follow the preceding section
without a page break, just add it to that chapter file.

Or, if that section of text is something you want to include in multiple
places, put it in a file by itself and then import it (by reference) as a
text inset into the chapter files where you want it to appear.

RE: OT: Translation cost comparison

2011-02-24 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi Roy,

prices should be the same as long as you pay a per word price. Whether your
document is written in Word or Frame does not matter, it contains the same
number of words.
Vendors charging extra cost for layout, image translating etc. just try to
add as many items as they can on the bill, but this only shows they do not know
how to handle graphics, Visio docs etc.

I am a translator myself, and I only stick to one thing: the number of words I
translate, whether they come from a pdf, a PPT, Frame, Doc or any other source
doc, and at a fixed rate. And if I do not know how to handle it, I recommend a
colleague who knows how to!

Cheers,
Mathieu (Toulouse, France).

Hi Seb,

have you tried the SDL support? They are pretty helpful (we're not expecting
less from a support...) and responsive (provided that you get a Premium support
membership). You can drop them a message or call them straight, there's always
somebody to reply or call you back relatively fast.

Wikis vs FM

2011-01-22 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

I'm reading here and there that a number of companies consider moving their
documentation to a Wiki. One of my clients did so a couple of months ago.

What are the limitations of a Wiki such as Confluence compared to FM? Can a
Wiki be the single source of data, and does it allow exporting to formats such
as those offered by MiF2Go for instance?

Thank you all for your expertise,

Mathieu.

the one I use routinely. Doing a Save As on a new PDF significantly reduces

Graphics average weight

2010-10-21 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

what is the average weight in Ko of your screenshots and illustrations? My docs
are pretty heavy (up to 15-20 Mo), with graphics (mostly png) being around 15
Ko-70 Ko in average. That looks too much. What would the best solution be to
reduce their weight (in batch if possible)?

Thank you in anticipation for your help,
Mathieu.

RE: Graphics average weight

2010-10-21 Thread mathieu jacquet

Thank you Nadine and Richard,

To answer Richard's questions:

I've never seen file sizes discussed in terms of weight and
heaviness. Is that a French idiom?

Yes, that was a linguistic calque from the French poids d'un fichier :o).

To get meaningful recommendations for reducing graphics
file sizes, you should probably provide more context. These
docs that are 15-20 Mo (MB) -- are they PDFs? Or your FM
  source files? Or something else?

I am talking about PDFs. I have seen 500-pages PDFs with hundreds of images not
bigger that 5 Mb, and mine contain about 250 graphics for a good 20 Mb in
average, so it makes me think there might be something rotten in my graphics
kingdom.

What graphics programs do you use to create and manipulate
these graphics? What version of FM are you using? Are you
importing by reference or copying into the document?

I am using FM9 on Vista 64. I only import them by reference.
Graphics are mostly screenshots taken with Snag-It and saved as png (True
Colour 24 bits). I have a couple of .eps with very specific Pantone colours but
not much (maybe one or two of about 400 Kb each).

If the heavy docs are PDFs, what version of Acrobat and
what job options are you using?

I am using Acrobat 9.O with Standard quality (French calque again :) ) job
option.

There are graphics gurus on the list (I'm not one of them)
who can probably offer useful advice once they understand
the question and have a little more detail. :-)

Here they are :).

Thank you all for your help,

Mathieu.

FrameScript menu disappearing

2010-07-28 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I'm running FM9 on Vista 64.

I downloaded WebWorks yesterday to perform some tests regarding an FM -
Confluence migration. Now, my FrameScript menu has disappeared and only
Snag-It, Pubs-Tools (for the BookVars plugin), Tools (for Paragraph and
Character Tools) and WebWorks menus are displayed.

How can I easily manage such menus, for example to have the Snag-It menu (which
I do not use) replaced by the FrameScript menu?

Thank you all,

Mathieu.

Thank you Klaus and Rick,

that was just an installation problem... Can't tell where it came from, but fsl
entries had disappeared from the maker.ini.

How can I easily manage such menus, for example to have the Snag-It menu
(which I do not use) replaced by the FrameScript menu?

 Thank you all,

 Mathieu.

FrameMaker to Confluence

2010-07-27 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I was recently wondering how to convert FM files for integration into a
Confluence Wiki.

Here is a very recent tuto I have found on this issue:
http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DISC/Framemaker+native+to+Confluence+-+case+study.

Currently working on it...I'll keep you posted. Has any of you ever tried it
before?

Cheers,
Mathieu.

P.S.: thank you David for sharing this.

From DocBook to FrameMaker

2010-07-07 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi everybody,

I am working on Vista 64 with FM 9.

I have read that it was possible to import DocBook files into FM. But I've also
read that this could turn to nightmare when it comes to create the proper EDD.
I am not familiar at all with structured Frame. So my question is, how easy is
it to import a DocBook file into FM, and what would it require to achieve that
nicely ? Also, is it mandatory to use structured FM for doing so ? And if yes,
how much work would it be to turn an unstructured light FM document (3
chapters, about 75 pages) into a structured one ?

Thank you all for your valuable expertise,
Mathieu.

RE: From DocBook to FrameMaker

2010-07-07 Thread mathieu jacquet

Well, I have not been clear enough.

We actually have a lot of content in DocBook, and very little in unstructured
FM (one book only, 3 chapters, about 75 pages) so far. The thing is, if we need
structured FM to import DocBook files, then I'd like also to turn my
unstructured book into a structured one, for the whole documentation to be
consistent.

Cheers,
Mathieu.

If it's that little content I would bring it in as plain text and
reformat as you go. It wouldn't be the trendy way to do it but you
would probably spend less time doing it that way than messing with
 EDDs.

RE: From DocBook to FrameMaker

2010-07-07 Thread mathieu jacquet

My post might be unclear because I do not know neither DocBook nor structured
Frame.

I created a Getting Started Guide in unstructured Frame. As said before, it is
really light (cover, TOC, LOF, LOT, 3 chapters). The client is very happy with
styles, content, etc.

Now, he is telling me that his/her developers have a lot of content in DocBook
format. He would like this content to be imported in Frame, for a PDF to be
produced from it using the styles I created in my unstructured FM doc.

He would also like my Frame content (I am now working on user guides and so on)
to be converted into DocBook format (well, XML, or even HTML format) for
insertion into their Confluence Wiki.

In a word, he would like:
. me to write in Frame to produce my own documentation, then export it into PDF
and XML/HTML for insertion into their Confluence Wiki.
. his/her developers to produce their own documentation (when too technical for
me) in their Confluence Wiki (DocBook or DITA format, he told me), then import
it in my FM doc (as appendixes for example).

So what would be the best solution for me and them ?

For me, just generate what I produced in flat FrameMaker as XML or HTML, and
have them insert the HTML content into their Confluence wiki using the proper
CSS ?
For them, just give me their content, which I would copy as plain text in my
flat FM files, then apply required FM styles and generate the PDF ?

Thank you all for your help,
Mathieu.

Automating PDF and HTML generation

2010-05-31 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

we're using Frame 9 on XP and 7 with Mif2Go to produce a PDF, Eclipse Help and
OmniHelp.

Is there any way to automatically launch ouput generation (PDF + HTML) in
command line? The idea would be to integrate command lines in a batch to be run
while building the software at night.

We also have a Ranorex (automation tool). Has anyone of you ever tried to
automate generation using this kind of tool?

Thank you all for your expertise!

Cheers,
Mathieu.

Graphics quality - Mif2Go

2010-04-29 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

we are generating EclipseHelp and OmniHelp for our documentation and chose
Mif2Go. Everything runs perfect except on one point: after conversion, graphics
are there, well layed out but of terrible quality. I attach an original picture
and its generated counterpart. We've played with GraphicExportDPI and
GraphicExportFormat but to no avail so far.

Do you have any strategy for obtaining graphics of a decent quality in our HTML
output? I guess it is something to be thought about from scratch, when
importing them in Frame. Is there any rule to respect (for instance, import in
xx DPI in Frame, then set GraphicExportDPI to xx DPI)?

Thank you very much in anticipation,
Mathieu.

P.S.: work environment is FM9 on Vista 64.

That is what I meant.
My documents were defined as single-sided, and this was the problem.

To clarify, what you're talking about are called master pages, not
templates (I point this out so that you can find information about them

 your problem more quickly).

What do you mean by each time I add pages? If your main flow has
Autoconnect turned on, FM adds new pages as needed to accommodate
additional text. To check, select a main flow text frame, select
Graphics Object Properties, and in the dialog box, look in the Flow
 section on the lower right.

When it adds new pages, FM bases them on the built-in Right master page
if the document is single-sided, and it alternates between the Left and
Right master pages if the document is double-sided. To check, select
 Format Page Layout Pagination.

On your last body page, select Format Page Layout Master Page Usage.
Make sure Use Master Page is set to Right/Left. Under Apply To, set the
range to include all but your first page, make sure Even (Left) and Odd
(Right) are selected, and click Apply.

Software: Automating object properties description in Reference Manual

2010-02-01 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

I am using FrameMaker 9.0.3 on Vista 64 bits.

I am currently working on a Reference Manual, the purpose of which is to
document all software objects referenced in a Mash-Up Suite.

Objects will be documented on a per page basis, with:

1. Object short textual description
2. Properties table
3. Illustrated example

We'd like to automate the update of object properties tables. Our idea is to
generate from the soft as many documents (XML, Word, Excel?) as objects, each
document containing object properties in a properly formatted format, then
insert these documents as text insets (converted into tables) into the
Properties Table sections of the Reference Manual.

Does it sound like a sound process? Would you recommend proceeding differently?
Which format would you go for for documents to be inserted into FrameMaker as
tables?

Thank you very much in anticipation for your help,

Mathieu.

Mentioning open source softwares

2009-11-27 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear all,

is there any rule about how to mention open source software in technical
documentation?

The software I am currently documenting (MashUp Composer) requires from users
that they run a database creation script. To do so, they need to launch a DB
administration tool such as MySQL Administrator and MySQL Qury Browser to set
user privileges, create the required DB schema, run the script, etc.

How would you recommend to present things?

Can I say, for example: Launch your favorite DB administration tool (for
example MySQL Administrator).

Am I supposed to add copyright mentions for open source software?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Mathieu.

OFF-FM [Mif2Go] - HTML pages contain wrong links to images

2009-10-21 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I do not know if a forum dedicated to Mif2Go issues exists, so I am posting my
request here.

I am using FM7.2 and Mif2Go on 64-bit Vista (no comment).

HTML pages generated by Mif2Go contain links to images such as
C:/EclipseHelpFolder/aa0fxxx.jpg. The problem is that I do not have any
aa0fxxx.jpg images in my folder, only 0fxxx.jpg, and as a result images
won't display. Where does this aa prefix come from? Is this a .ini conf
problem?

Thank you all for your support,

Mathieu.

Cost of a basic FrameScript script

Who should I ask for having such script developed (if using a FrameScript for

Thank you Art,
maybe Bruce can confirm that. And now I've understood why I've been calling my

There are several people who produce custom scripts on the list, and
you can find more in the FrameScript group on Yahoo. My preference has
always been to work with Rick Quattro at frameexpert.com.

I don't think that's a complicated script, so I doubt the cost would
be high, but you're paying for the programmer's time and expertise --
 I'd guesstimate $175 +/- $50.

However, I'd look at the ImpGraph plug in to see if that meets your
needs before you dive into script land. Cheaper and ready to run.

Thank you all in advance for your help,

Cost of a basic FrameScript script

2009-09-11 Thread mathieu jacquet

Thank you Art,
maybe Bruce can confirm that. And now I've understood why I've been calling my
colleague Bruce Cooper "Bruce Foster" for a while (unless that was because he
worked face to face with a Jodie, but not Foster...anyway :o) ).
Have a nice day,
Mathieu.

Thank you all! I hadn't noticed this effect.
I tried it this morning but the magnifying effect distorted the selected
text...giving a slightly oozing (if this word can fit here) effect to the
whole thing. Probably due to image quality...
Anyway thank you all, that's a nice feature to know!
Cheers,

Something very similar to this can be created with SnagIt using the 'Spotlight

Dear all,

while downloading Skype, I noticed a nice zoom effect on screenshots of their

Do you know which tool can do this (possible with Snagit?)

For printed books the prevailing wisdom and studies show that serif font is
easier to read. On the other hand, for display devices (electronic viewing)
the prevailing studies and wisdom say that non-serif font is easier for humans
to decode. Look at the books on your shelf. Check how many of these books
have arial or helvetica font for the body text. The number should be few or
zero. Now look at your copy machine user interface or your cell phone --these
devices normally do use helvetica, arial, or verdana (san-serif font).

Most tech docs tend to favor the printed media wisdom (serif font for body
text) and use non serif for headings because they stand out. Aside from
following the the prevailing wisdom, this combination has always looked good to
me.

There have been numerous studies in Human Computer Interaction (long before
Google or Microsoft ever existed) they reveal that:
- Non serif fonts are easier read on display devices
- Using more than five typefaces (where color, weight, and italics all count as
a new typeface) for a particular display increases human processing time.

Software button/menu/function labels: from soft to doc

2009-06-19 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I'm using Frame 7.2 on XP.

I am about to start documenting an Eclipse-based software. As regards the
button/menu/function labels, what is the best way to integrate them into the
doc: X-ref to a Frame doc containing all labels, text inset from a doc
containing all labels, variables or just "hard"-typing in labels in the doc? Or
something else?

Any help appreciated,

Mathieu.

that looks fine. I'm trying it right now!

Have a nice day,

Hi Mathieu

No need to apologize, you're not disturbing anyone here on this list. ;-)

You can do one of the following to insert landscape pages:
Choose Format Customize Layout Rotate Page Clockwise (or Counterclockwise)
Split up your file and put the files in a FrameMaker book. Create separate
files for the landscape pages and insert these at the relevant positions in
your FrameMaker book. This is a bit more work in the beginning, but it's also a
safer option for future updates.
Cheers

The first option can be made much more robust and flexible with a bit more
 work in the beginning, too.

Instead of just rotating body pages ad hoc as needed, create rotated custom
master pages (LandscapeLeft and LandscapeRight might be good names). In FM
7.x or higher, you could assign these master pages based on specific
paragraph tags, but IIRC, FM6 didn't have that feature. There are, however,
scripts and/or plugins that will do it. If this is a one-time thing, it
probably isn't worth it, but if there is a recurring need, automating this
 would be a good idea.

With some of us, it just depends on our level of caffeination. Too early is
not good, but too late is risky, too. ;-)

But without intending any criticism of your question, I can help with the
archive search problem. Don't use the FrameUsers site, use Google. You can
restrict a Google search to the FrameUsers list by entering a search string
 like this:

   landscape pages site:lists.frameusers.com

Try that one, and I think you'll find several of the 76 hits quite relevant.

RE: sdl trados and FM (translation)

2008-10-17 Thread mathieu jacquet

Dear Edwin,

the usual process (for translation using Trados Workbench or TagEditor, I do
not know about SDL Edit) is:

1. save .fm as .mif
2. convert .mif to .rtf (for translation using Trados Workbench) or to .ttx
(translation using TagEditor) via the STagger for FrameMaker filter. You should
end up with as many .rtf or .ttx as source documents + an ancillary file
(containing template information etc.)
3. translate your doc using Trados Workbench or TagEditor.
4. Backconvert to .mif using STagger for FrameMaker
5. Save your .mif as .fm and check that the layout, Xrefs, etc are OK (basic QA
check).

When I start a new translation, I select the *.mif file, and then it creates

RE: Tageditor and Framemaker, any special rules

2008-09-17 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi,

not sure, but if ever you've got a split word, a second same sentence won't
appear as a repetition of the first, but as a No Match (new segment), and
you'll pay more as well:

For example :

1. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker is :

8 No Match. Cost = 8 x rate per word

2. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker. this is:imk 1 a
word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker. is :

8 No Match + 8 repetitions. Cost : 8 x rate per word + (8 x rate per word) x
discount rate for repetitions (10% for instance)

3. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk
3rker. this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a marker. is

16 No Match. Cost : 16 x rate per word

 Hi,

Not so. S-Tagger can manage the markers with a simple configuration,
but if you leave them alone, you get something like this:

 this is:imk 1 a word :imk 2with a ma:imk 3rker

It's better to manage the markers and not subject your translators to
half words, but the letters are still there. It's also better for you
to manage them, because split words count as two in Trados. You'll
pay more if there are a lot of them. The string above is eight words
 plus the markers.

 Kevin

 Hello

I just learned that markers need to be placed in front of or after a
word in Framemaker when preparing for Trados and tageditor. Otherwise
tag-editor will not recognise the word.

Are there any other special rules that I need to be aware of?

Running headers calling on formatted variables

2008-08-14 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi all,

I'm using FM 7.2 on XP.

In my document, running headers call on Heading1. I sometimes add in 1st-level
titles (Heading1) the name of the product, which is a ProductName variable
formatted in a certain way (half of the name blue, the other purple).

When the product name appears in the header, it is just black.

Any clue?

Thank you all for your help,

Mathieu.

RE: language specific screen shots in Framemaker

2008-07-03 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi Verner,

what do you really mean by screen shots are sent to the translator?

As a (English into French) translator, I have never had to translate any screen
shot strictly speaking. I usually translate software strings that developers
then integrate into the (in my case, French version of) the soft. Then I
capture screenshots in the right language to place them in my doc.

In your case it would be too time-consuming of course, you would not want to
capture 1000 screenshots x 6 languages...

However, if the translators translate straight into Photoshop or Illustrator,
maybe they do not set the image settings as you do (in terms of dpi, size,
format, etc.), which may cause problems.

Mathieu.

Have any of you succeded in creating a scenario where language specific
screen shots do not need to be reimported or rescaled in Framemaker.

I am thinking of directory structure for each language, screen
 resolutions, dpi etc.

The idea is that the English files and screen shots are sent to the
translator. The translator replaces the English screen shots with the
 language-specific ones.

If you have a scenario for this I am very interested. Often when I
replace a screen shot it is totally distorted in Framemaker and needs to
 be re-imported and re-scaled.

language specific screen shots in Framemaker

2008-07-03 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi Verner,

what do you really mean by "screen shots are sent to the translator"?

As a (English into French) translator, I have never had to translate any screen
shot strictly speaking. I usually translate software strings that developers
then integrate into the (in my case, French version of) the soft. Then I
capture screenshots in the right language to place them in my doc.

In your case it would be too time-consuming of course, you would not want to
capture 1000 screenshots x 6 languages...

However, if the translators translate straight into Photoshop or Illustrator,
maybe they do not set the image settings as you do (in terms of dpi, size,
format, etc.), which may cause problems.

Mathieu.

RE: Off topic: Handling of linked graphics in several language versions in Framemaker

2008-07-01 Thread mathieu jacquet

Hi Verner,

I usually use the Archive structure, that is to say an overall directory
(Product x.y. English) containing, on the same level :
. the fm files an book file ;
. a graphic directory containing all graphics ;
. a text directory containing all text insets.

I copy paste this overall directory and rename it Product x.y. French (or
whatever).

(ONLY IF YOU HAVE TRADOS (or whatever CAT tool) : I set up a translation
folder, which I divide into languages (French, Spanish, etc.). I then divide
each of the language folder into MIF, ORG and STF folders. Then I convert all
.fm files to .mif then .rtf or .ttx, and I send these files for translation (a
translator does not translate straight into Frame)).

The thing is that none of my graphics contains text (I do not actually document
softs, so I don't have language specific screenshots), so links stay
untouched, and the translator does not have to work on graphics.

If I had language specific graphics, with the structure previously described, I
could copy them directly into the graphics directory without chaning their
name and overwrite the ones in the wrong language.
Issue : Generic graphics are copied as many times as your number of languages...

Yours,

Mathieu

 Hey
I am describing a software product and have hundreds of screen shots in
my manual that is to be translated into several languages.
Have you a good idea for directory structure and file naming of graphics
 inserted by reference?

 My idea is the following:

 Product version x.y
 - Generic graphcis
 - English
 - - Framemaker files
 -- Language specific graphics
 -- pdf

The idea is that by copying the English folder to another language
folder the translator will be up and running and can replace the
 language specific graphics.

I realize that screen shots with the same name will exist in different
versions and languages, but to use version/language specific graphics
will result days spent in re-importing graphics whenever a new version
of the manual is to be made.

How do you solve this issue?

Med venlig hilsen - Best regards
