odd behavior in cross-reference dialog box
I am taking over a former writer's work, and the only odd thing that I am finding in the Frame (8) files is this. When I double-click a cross-reference link, the Cross-Reference dialog box shows "Cross-Ref" and Marker Types in the left pane and Cross-Reference Markers in the right pane, instead of all the paragraph tags in the left pane and the relevant targets in the right pane. I know that I can click Source Type and choose Paragraphs to see the paragraph tags, but doing that a hundred times a day is getting long. In all my documents, when I double-click a cross-reference link, the Cross-Reference dialog box shows all the paragraph tags in the left pane and the relevant targets in the right pane. I want this standard behavior (for me, anyway) when I double-click the former writer's links. Is there some setting about which I am forgetting? Thanks. best, Paul
TimeSavers
I am looking into asking our IT department to buy TimeSavers, the FrameMaker plugin. Does anyone on this list use this product? If so, could you email me through the list or directly and let me know how you are using it and your thoughts about the product? Our IT budget is, well, wee, and I need to be able to truly justify new purchases. Thanks. best, Paul
add tab stop in a cross-reference
Thanks to Bill and Grant for their comments. I was able to make this work by adding a new tab stop with a leader in the bulleted paragraph format in which the link resides, and by adding a /t tab stop in the x-ref itself. I did not think that tweaking the bulleted paragraph format itself would affect the x-ref, but it did. It took me a minute to get this right, but it does work nicely. best, Paul -- Original message -- From: "Bill Swallow" > Since char formats can be used anywhere in the document, getting a set > distance will be difficult. add tab stop in a cross-reference
Is it possible to put a tab stop in a cross-reference? For example, I want my <$paratext>, page <$pagenum> x-ref to have a tab stop (and leader) in front of the word "page". This is not my formatting preference, but a request from someone who uses our docs a great deal to train others. Thanks. best, Paul
frame 8 import graphic works differently than 7
I find that in frame 8, when I import a tiff that is 5.2 inches wide, the import dialog does not automatically choose the dpi that preserves the 5.2 inch width (which happened in frame 7). Instead, it seems that in frame 8 my only choice is to click custom and guess which dpi is going bring in the 5.2 inch wide image so that it fits in my 5.2 inch wide table. Does anyone else see this changed behavior? Thanks. best, Paul
DITA in Frame 7.2
It was my understanding that 7.2 had support for DITA, but a search of the 7.2 help file found nothing for DITA. Do I need to go to 8.0? Thanks. best, Paul

master pages not stable
For the first time ever, I am finding that frame is, on its own, changing the application of master pages. About once a day, I find that frame assigns the "first" master page to a page which most definitely did have "left/right" assigned to it. If I re-assign the correct master page to the 5 or so "mis-assigned" pages in this 60-page manual, I find that in a day or so, the master pages are changed again. This does not happen when I save and close the file and frame, and re-open. It appears to happen in the course of adding text and the manual page count growing. This is frame 7.2. Thanks for any help. best, Paul
Chapter Numbering
Translation. The translation must be done in Word, so I will need to convert from Frame to Word, and this caused huge linking problems between the Word files the last time I did it with multiple Frame files in the Frame book. Having one Frame content file, though it is not ideal for me, saves me from huge headaches down the road in this context. Chapter Numbering
I am trying to find the right Autonumber format for my Chapter tag. Up till now, I had separate files for each chapter, but now I need to have a Frame book with just one core file that contains all my chapters. The Autonumber format that I had been using looks like this: H:Chapter <$chapnum> \t but that does not work right when multiple chapters are in one file. Each chapter becomes chapter 1. I have not been able to decipher Frame's help to understand what I need to do to make an Autonumber format that properly numbers multiple chapters in one file. Can anyone tell me where I might get some guidance? Thanks. best, Paul

Does that mean that, if I pick Do not Write Equations, and hide the BMPs that [GraphFiles] tif=bmp points to, that I will get empty frames where the images would be? Does anyone know if there is a way to make mif2go produce an rtf file that has linked graphics, rather than embedded graphics? This would be from a frame file with referenced graphics. I did not see anything about this in the mif2go help file. Thanks. Paul

frame templates
After I make master page text frame changes, and go back to view body pages, frame no longer asks me if I want to allow a body page to override the new master page changes. Also, frame no longer applies the master page text frame changes to the body pages when I go back to view body pages! I have never seen his before. I have re-booted twice. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? Thanks. Paul
mif2go
Public bullying? Huh? I am trying to get tech support for a product that my company paid a good deal of money for. I HAVE read the manual. The problem is one that I could NOT solve from the manual. So I turned to you, the creator and supporter of the product. > saying "something's wrong, here's my .ini file" doesn't cut it. I did not say that, or anything close to it. I said, on Thursday: Today, when I went back to work on my project, the conversion began to produce files that no longer point to the frame templates. The setup is the same as Monday. I re-booted. No difference. Is the problem that the mif2go.ini keeps getting the wrong list of files? It does not match the list in the frame book. I have set up the project 4 times, each time the mif2go.ini file gets an incorrect file ID list. It is: [FileIDs] Title=aa PacStar5500OperatorGuideTOC=ab IntroductionTo5500=ac chap2=ad AppATechSpec=ae Glossary=af PacStar5500OperatorGuideIX=ag TechnicalSpecifications=ah LoggingIn=ai AddingPhones=aj AddingComputers=ak ManagingUsers=am ManagingNetwork=an Maintenance=ao IntroductionToSoftware=ap ManagingSystem=aq SettingUp=ar ManagingPhones=as It should be: [FileIDs] Title=aa PacStar5500OperatorGuideTOC=ab IntroductionTo5500=ac chap2=ad AppATechSpec=ae Glossary=af PacStar5500OperatorGuideIX=ag Even changing to what it should be does not fix the problem. The rtf files still come out with no formatting from the frame templates. Thanks. Paul Resuming email: I have gone over this again and again on my own, with the manual before me. Today, the conversion is producing a mif2go.ini file that has the right contents, but the frame files seem to keep losing their pointers to the templates. It seems to be very irregular and unpredictable. I have re-built the project many times, and tried MANY different arrangement, after going over the manual again and again. As before, mif2go seems to keep remembering old settings, just now it's an old template. Can you address this? If I send the project to you at support at omsys.com (since the behavior is different now), will you respond? Paul -- Original message -- From: "Jeremy H. Does anyone know if Jeremy Griffith, the creator of mif2go, is still on this list, or how to reach him? I am having bizarre problems with mif2go (relating to memory, I think), and two emails to support at omsys.com last Thursday have gone unanswered. I have wasted many hours on this. I have an important project to do, and I cannot finish it due to persistent mif2go problems. A Frame book that I took over is mysteriously leaving out-of-date, unwanted words in the Keywords field that is visible in the PDF when you right-click the PDF file and click the PDF tab. I have searched through each Frame file by right-clicking and picking Properties and clicking the Summary tab, but there is not one word in the Keywords field in those files. So I do not know where the PDF is drawing on for the words in its Keywords field. Maybe there are ghosts in the conversion? Paul

In the Frame Print Book dialog, I wanted to set things so one less paragraph tag to get included in the PDF TOC. In the PDF Setup for selected files dialog, Bookmarks tab, I changed the list of tags in the Include Paragraphs box, thinking that would do it, as per usual. I noticed that acrobat ignored my change. The PDF TOC was unchanged. So I took out all but one tag, and the PDF TOC upon regeneration was unchanged. I have Generate PDF bookmarks checked, as always. I have never seen this before. Any ideas? images for mif2go
If I am writing a doc set with which I may have to use mif2go to make a Word version of the Frame book (long story), is it true that I should be putting only BMPs in my Frame file, since I believe I recall someone saying that non-BMP images in Frame do not always turn out sized properly in Word after going through mif2go? Thanks. Paul
mif2go
Thanks. How do you see the "Set up print rtf project" dialog after the first setup? It seems to show once, and then disappear. I have looked through the manual enough to get my frame to go to word, but the word version is still 30 percent bigger than the frame, so it does not look like the original. Maybe one problem is a View in Frame (my custom draft mark) that, even when hidden in Frame, shows in Word. That puts itself in the middle of each page. Maybe that is what is throwing off the page size. I cannot see why this View, hidden in Frame, shows in Word. Paul -- Original message -- From: "Jeremy H. I am told that mif2go can really duplicate the look of a frame doc, but I am missing some details. I am told that in the mif2go setup there is somewhere where one can pick a frame file that acts as a template for the frame to word conversion. I cannot find where this option is. Also, he said that somewhere in the mif2rtf.ini I should put gif=bmp and jpg=bmp because I have some GIFs and JPGs referenced in my frame doc, because BMPs turn out better in the conversion. Can anyone comment on these questions? Thanks. best, Paul
