TimeSavers
I am looking into asking our IT department to buy TimeSavers, the FrameMaker plugin. Does anyone on this list use this product? If so, could you email me through the list or directly and let me know how you are using it and your thoughts about the product? Our IT budget is, well, wee, and I need to be able to truly justify new purchases. add tab stop in a cross-reference
Is it possible to put a tab stop in a cross-reference? For example, I want my $paratext, page $pagenumDefault ¶ Font x-ref to have a tab stop (and leader) in front of the word page. This is not my formatting preference, but a request from someone who uses our docs a great deal to train others. Re: add tab stop in a cross-reference
Thanks to Bill and Grant for their comments. I was able to make this work by adding a new tab stop with a leader in the bulleted paragraph format in which the link resides, and by adding a /t tab stop in the x-ref itself. I did not think that tweaking the bulleted paragraph format itself would affect the x-ref, but it did. It took me a minute to get this right, but it does work nicely. best, Paul -- Original message -- From: Bill Swallow [EMAIL PROTECTED] Since char formats can be used anywhere in the document, getting a set distance will be difficult. But sure, you can add a slash-t (\t) in there, but it's a tab and not a tab stop declaration. I do this. Of course I limit this xref format's use to it being the only entry in a paragraph, which has an actual tab stop assigned to it. So yes, you can likely do what you need to do provided you marry up the xref and the paragraph style into a combined use. frame 8 import graphic works differently than 7
I find that in frame 8, when I import a tiff that is 5.2 inches wide, the import dialog does not automatically choose the dpi that preserves the 5.2 inch width (which happened in frame 7). master pages not stable
For the first time ever, I am finding that frame is, on its own, changing the application of master pages. About once a day, I find that frame assigns the first master page to a page which most definitely did have left/right assigned to it. If I re-assign the correct master page to the 5 or so mis-assigned pages in this 60-page manual, I find that in a day or so, the master pages are changed again. This does not happen when I save and close the file and frame, and re-open. It appears to happen in the course of adding text and the manual page count growing. This is frame 7.2. Translation. The translation must be done in Word, so I will need to convert from Frame to Word, and this caused huge linking problems between the Word files the last time I did it with multiple Frame files in the Frame book. Re: mif2go
Public bullying? Huh? I am trying to get tech support for a product that my company paid a good deal of money for. I HAVE read the manual. The problem is one that I could NOT solve from the manual. So I turned to you, the creator and supporter of the product. saying something's wrong, here's my .ini file doesn't cut it. I did not say that, or anything close to it. I said, on Thursday: Today, when I went back to work on my project, the conversion began to produce files that no longer point to the frame templates. The setup is the same as Monday. I re-booted. No difference. Is the problem that the mif2go.ini keeps getting the wrong list of files? It does not match the list in the frame book. I have set up the project 4 times, each time the mif2go.ini file gets an incorrect file ID list. It is: [FileIDs] Title=aa PacStar5500OperatorGuideTOC=ab IntroductionTo5500=ac chap2=ad AppATechSpec=ae Glossary=af PacStar5500OperatorGuideIX=ag TechnicalSpecifications=ah LoggingIn=ai AddingPhones=aj AddingComputers=ak ManagingUsers=am ManagingNetwork=an Maintenance=ao IntroductionToSoftware=ap ManagingSystem=aq SettingUp=ar ManagingPhones=as It should be: [FileIDs] Title=aa PacStar5500OperatorGuideTOC=ab IntroductionTo5500=ac chap2=ad AppATechSpec=ae Glossary=af PacStar5500OperatorGuideIX=ag Even changing to what it should be does not fix the problem. The rtf files still come out with no formatting from the frame templates. Thanks. Paul Resuming email: I have gone over this again and again on my own, with the manual before me. Today, the conversion is producing a mif2go.ini file that has the right contents, but the frame files seem to keep losing their pointers to the templates. It seems to be very irregular and unpredictable. I have re-built the project many times, and tried MANY different arrangement, after going over the manual again and again. As before, mif2go seems to keep remembering old settings, just now it's an old template. Can you address this? If I send the project to you at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (since the behavior is different now), will you respond? Paul -- Original message -- From: Jeremy H. Griffith [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Mon, 12 Jun 2006 22:42:47 +, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone know if Jeremy Griffith, the creator of mif2go, is still on this list, or how to reach him? Yes, he is, as you well know. Public bullying does not impress him. Bad strategy, Paul. I am having bizarre problems with mif2go (relating to memory, I think), and two emails to [EMAIL PROTECTED] last Thursday have gone unanswered. It would have helped had you made the slightest effort to provide the sort of description and files requested in Appendix D of the User's Guide. You might also note that your two previous questions in the last week, no better presented than the latest two, *were* answered, patiently, both on the same day you asked. I have wasted many hours on this. Yes, of your time and mine. Reading the User's Guide would really help. Please try it! ;-) I have an important project to do, and I cannot finish it due to persistent mif2go problems. Mif2go seems to be remembering past settings, and no amount of re-booting my PC or re-starting Frame makes much difference. As you know, such settings are remembered in the .ini file, and nowhere else. Rebooting without determining just what you have mis-set is not going to be helpful. -- Jeremy H. RE: frame to pdf question
Sorry, I was thinking frame to html help, where frame's toc is ignored. Now I have it right, and fixing frame's toc fixes the toc in the pdf. It's been a long week... Paul -- Original message -- From: Ridder, Fred [EMAIL PROTECTED] The list of paragraph tags to include as PDF bookmarks is stored both in the book and in each individual file. Specifying additional tags from the book file's PDF Setup dialog saves the additions in each component file as well as in the book file (that's why that operation is so slow sometimes). But removing tags from the list in the book file doesn't always remove the tags in the lists stored in the individual files. And it is a feature of FrameMaker that any tags specified in individual files will get picked up in the bookmarks in addition to the globally selected list. The bottom line is that you probably need to go into the PDF Setup dialog of each individual file to de-select the tags you no longer want picked up as bookmarks. Re: mif2go
Thanks. How do you see the Set up print rtf project dialog after the first setup? It seems to show once, and then disappear. I have looked through the manual enough to get my frame to go to word, but the word version is still 30 percent bigger than the frame, so it does not look like the original. Maybe one problem is a View in Frame (my custom draft mark) that, even when hidden in Frame, shows in Word. That puts itself in the middle of each page. Maybe that is what is throwing off the page size. I cannot see why this View, hidden in Frame, shows in Word. Paul -- Original message -- From: Jeremy H. I am told that in the mif2go setup there is somewhere where one can pick a frame file that acts as a template for the frame to word conversion. I cannot find where this option is. It's the entire right-hand half of the Set up dialog... you select the file at the top, and check boxes for the properties you want to import from it. The import is done in a way that does *not* affect the original .fm file; only the .mif used for conversion is modified. For Word output, you mostly need to adjust master pages, as detailed in the User's Guide, par. 2.3, Importing formats from a conversion template. Also, he said that somewhere in the mif2rtf.ini I should put gif=bmp and jpg=bmp because I have some GIFs and JPGs referenced in my frame doc, because BMPs turn out better in the conversion. If you are going to Word, which we presume is the case here, Mif2Go can embed .bmps into .wmfs and put them in Word scaled exactly as in FrameMaker. But for other formats, we have to let Word embed them itself, in which case we cannot specify scaling. That's what better means here, as explained in par. 5.16.1, Understanding graphics requirements for Word. The setting you mention is described in par. 5.16.2.1, Converting referenced graphics before Mif2Go (best quality), and other places. Can anyone comment on these questions?
