Once fast, now the Share Review preparation process takes a very long time

2011-10-20 Thread ri...@inficon.com
The PDF shared review process has been working great until recently. Now,
it hangs up with the message "Status: Saving the shared review-enabled PDF
file ..." displayed. If I touch this message, I get another "Acrobat is
not responding" dialog. If I let the process continue for a very long
time, say 30 minutes, eventually the process completes: the e-mail is
posted in Lotus Notes and the Shared Review is posted in the Share Review
internal network public server --- all is fine.

Why is this once fast process now taking so long?

 I'm Adobe TCS2 on a Dell Precision T3500 Workstation running Windows 7
Professional SP1 32-bit with 4 GB Memory, Xeon 2.53 GHz processor,
graphics card is a NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (2 GB) running two 20" widescreen
monitors.

I author in FrameMaker 9.0p255 then create a PDF in Acrobat 9 Pro
Extended 9.4.6 and send the PDF out for shared review on internal network
public server sending the e-mail through IBM Lotus Notes 8.5.2
(20100811.1131).

Thanks!

UPDATE: PDF Shared Review problems

2011-08-05 Thread ri...@inficon.com
In speaking with my IT Department, I've learned that they have been having
problems with our network after a recently installed update.

We discovered that updating Acrobat for PDF Shared Review users (selecting
Help >> Check for Updates... and install the updates, then reboot) fixes
the new comments not posting problem.

I checked for the XML files as Lief suggested, and found them. My IT
department is looking at backups from the past few days to see if they can
find XML files that contain the "lost" comments.

Thanks!

PDF Shared Review problems

2011-08-04 Thread ri...@inficon.com
I'm using TCS2 on a Dell Precision T3500 Workstation running Windows 7
Professional SP1 32-bit with 4 GB Memory, Xeon 2.53 GHz processor,
graphics card is a NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (2 GB) running two 20" widescreen
monitors.

I author in FM 9.0p255 then create a PDF in Acrobat 9 Pro Extended 9.4.5
and send the PDF out for shared review on internal network public server.
The PDF shared review process has been working great for, hmm, a year or
more (I got TCS2 soon after it was released).

Recently, I've been having problems with new comments not posting even
after author's selected Publish Comments.

This morning I'm missing comments that I know were successfully posted in
the share reviewed PDF yesterday.

Asking reviewers to update their version of Acrobat 8 and higher (Open
Acrobat and perform Help >> Check for updates... then installing any
updates) fixes the new comments not posting problem. However, after
updating, reviewers get upset when I also ask them to redo their comments.

Not seeing comments that I know were there previously scares me.

This is all a bit odd, since PDF shared review has behaved perfectly until
recently. Even when I went from XP to Win7 on a new computer a few months
back, PDF shared review continued to work great.

Since having the reviewers Help >> Check for updates... in their copy of
Acrobat 8+ seems to fix posting new comments, I suspect some recent Adobe
or Windows upgrade changed the playing field, so to speak.

Anyone else seeing problems like mine? What do you think the problem is?

Richard

FrameMaker 9

2011-05-20 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Yes, I see the same problem with my paragraph designer.

I'm FM9 fully patched, on a brand new Dell Workstation running Win7 Pro
SP1 32-bit with 4GB Memory, Xeon 2.53 GHz processor, graphics card is a
NVIDIA Quadro 4000 (2 GB).

After awhile, my paragraph designer will simply stop working. I have to
exit and restart FM9, then all is well, for awhile. I assume it is a FM9
bug, but I've not bothered to bang my head against the wall with Adobe to
see if there is a fix. It's mildly annoying and I've learned to live with
it.

eBooks, EPUB, using FrameMaker

2010-12-08 Thread ri...@inficon.com
The CEO of my company has asked that I look into eBooks and the EPUB
standard. He sent me the link:

http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/design/crossmedia_resources/ebooks_software.html

I know nothing about this, so I'm on a real learning curve here. The first
thing I notice is that Adobe is pushing InDesign as the vehicle to create
eBooks. This is a real stumbling block for me. We've got over 15 years
invested in FrameMaker and all our docs are created and maintained in
FrameMaker. My "books" are delivered as PDFs. I am loathe to shift from
FrameMaker to InDesign given our extensive history with FrameMaker.

My question is, can I create eBooks and EPUB documents from FrameMaker, or
am I truly locked in to InDesign for the eBooks and EPUB standard? If I
can use FrameMaker, where would I find information about using FrameMaker
to create eBooks and EPUB documents?

Thanks!

Fm9.0p255: trouble in Unicode paradise

2010-10-28 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Yves,

>From a company we purchased, I inherited FrameMaker 7 files for several
languages.

I do not have FM7. I went from FM6 to FM9 (TCS2 actually, I am now at
FM9.0p255).

The European languages I inherited open fine in FM9. Their cross
references looked great.

But, the Chinese and Japanese versions all had the character's in their
cross references get mangled as if FM9 could not find the correct font so
it substituted some other font. All text other than the cross references
looks great. No font problems at all, except in the cross references.

I've not yet found a fix. It has been suggested that I get FM7, that
perhaps either a FM9 bug or that the new FM9 Unicode font handling was my
problem.

But, it seems better to me that I figure out why the Chinese and Japanese
cross-reference problems are occurring in FM9. Right now, however, I'm
stumped.

I am afraid that I am of no help to you, but, I do thank you for posting
your work around. I plan to give them a try.

Thanks!

Acrobat 9 - a disaster

2010-07-26 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Adobe has never understood how corporate IT departments work, and I've
come to realize that Adobe doesn't understand how corporations handle
multiple installations of Adobe products across a business network. Adobe
is focused solely on one installation on one computer handled by one
person who has all the rights to do everything. This is a complaint I've
had about FM for years and years, and the same goes for Acrobat. My IT
department gets so frustrated with Adobe technical support that Adobe is
only called if the problem seems unsolvable, and generally the advice we
get from Adobe is worthless. My IT department doesn't check for prior
installations nor do they remove old programs. IT simply installs new
programs based on whatever version of software they happen to have. If
Adobe does not want different versions of Acrobat on the same computer,
Adobe's installer should delete the old versions. If it's not kosher to
have, say, Reader and Acrobat Pro Extended on the same computer, Adobe's
installer should take care of the problem. We have computers with
different versions of Acrobat and Reader installed. It's not at all
unusual. We've got 100s of installations here. If problems occur that
cannot be solved, one either learns to live with the problems or IT will
wipe the hard drive and install their current "footprint". That's a very
heavy handed approach, but it's all about time and money. IT will only put
so much time towards "fixing" computer software, then they simply "wipe
it" and start again. Sorry, I can't do much. It's not my computer, it is
the corporation's computer on the corporation's network. I'm just allowed
to use the computer and network to do my job.

Don't get me wrong, I love Adobe products and I use TCS2 and Illustrator
daily. PDFs have simply become the norm for our business communications.
But, I do wish Adobe would get some clue as to how business networks and
IT departments work, and get away from Adobe's "single computer - single
administrator" mindset.

Changing image file linked to --- framers Digest, Vol 57, Issue 13

2010-07-16 Thread ri...@inficon.com
This works great. I've done it for my ever changing world of software
screen shots with great success. But, you have to make sure the new
graphic is the same size and resolution as the old graphic. That is, if
the old graphic was 3x5 inches at 300 dpi, then the new graphic has to be
3x5 at 300 dpi. Otherwise, you'll have to tweak every graphic in
FrameMaker, and that's exactly what you are trying to avoid.

Hi Dan -- I recently had to do something similar and the Frame Forum got
me the solution. I think it will work for you.

   1. Back up the file in which you want to change the graphic reference
-- in case you mess it up with this solution.
   2. Save the Frame file as a .mif file.
   3. Open the .mif file in Notepad or some other text editor.
   4. Find and replace all instances of the graphic's file name with the
  new name.
   5. Save the text file.
   6. Put your new graphic in the same referenced location as the old one.
   7. Open the modified .mif in Frame.
   8. Check to see if the replacement worked.
   9. Save the .mif back to its original .fm file name.

Good luck,
Tony

Missing headers and page numbers in FM 8

Dear Frame Users,

I am a long-time user of FrameMaker who has recently been plagued with a
problem that I've never encountered before: When I make .PDFs, I usually
have swaths of pages with some headers and some page numbers missing.

I am using unstructured FrameMaker 8 on a Windows XP platform to create
books that are usually more than 300 pages. When I go to print a book, I
first open up all of my chapters. Then I choose "File_Print Book" (I never
do "Save As PDF"). I print directly to .PDF, without making a separate
Distiller (.prn) file.

Beginning a few weeks ago, the .PDFs that were created had some headers
and page numbers missing. Usually, these missing headers and page numbers
were on consecutive pages - as an example, pages 20-40 would have missing
page numbers. I would then reattempt the creation of a .PDF oh, two, three
or sometimes four times, with the result that the exact same headers or
page numbers would be missing. The ironic thing is that these headers and
page numbers would appear as normal in the original FM files.

Fortunately, I have managed to get a successful .PDF created with all
headers and page numbers after my fourth, fifth or sixth try. But this has
changed a relatively quick process into an irritating process that takes
much, much longer.

Worse, the missing page numbers and header problem is appearing across
numerous files, in numerous books. And this problem has appeared out of
nowhere - It's as if one day I did not have disappearing headers and page
numbers, and the next day I did.

Hence I'm wondering: Why is this happening? And does anyone know how I
could fix this problem?

I described this problem one friend of mine who told me to re-create and
reassemble my book file from scratch. I did that, to no effect. This same
friend suggested that I first make a .prn file, but I have never seen the
value in taking this extra step - and when I tried this longer route to
PDF creation, it too didn't solve the problem. I also went to Adobe's
website and found several patches for FM 8. I downloaded those, and these
did not help either.

So now I'm grasping at straws - I'm increasing the amount of RAM in my PC
from 2 GB to 4 GB, just in case this .PDF creation woes have been caused
by a lack of memory. About the only other thing I could do would be to
upgrade from FM 8 to FM 9 but I don't know if that would solve the problem
either. Since I don't know the cause, of the problem I cannot guess at the
solution.

Does anyone else have other ideas to fix this?

Graphics quality - Mif2Go

2010-04-29 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Mathieu

While I've got the latest version of Mif2Go, I've not used it in quite
awhile since I no longer have the requirement to produce HTML docs. So,
I'm in a memory fog here. Back when I first started to use Mif2Go to
product HTML docs, I was not happy with the quality of the graphics in my
HTML output from FrameMaker. If I remember correctly, using the FrameMaker
export filters resulted in the poor graphics quality. What you need to do
is use a third party tool to create the graphics, then tell Mif2Go to use
the third-party graphics directly. In your Mif2Go manual, check out
4.8.2.3 Using Third Party Graphics Converters (this from my 2007 May 01
Mif2Go manual).

Best bet is to contact Omni Systems with your question, or maybe Jeremy
will read your posting and will point you in the right direction. As I
remember, Mif2Go support (Jeremy) was very helpful.

Good luck,
Richard

I haven't a clue. I've got TCS2 installed, and I'm running FM9.0p250 with
Acrobat Pro Extended 9.3.2 on a Win XP SP3 Dell workstation with 4 GB RAM.
Initially I had problems with Save As PDF (my first page graphics didn't
come through to the PDF). But, I installed the Microsoft HotFix (which is
supposed to be for text problems) and my graphics PDFd perfectly after
that. My Save As PDF creates wonderful PDFs, and I'm impressed with how
fast it works given my graphics intensive manuals (some in the 500 page
range).

I'm sorry to hear you are having so much difficulty, but I've no idea how
to help you.

Landscape Tables in a Portrait Style Book

2010-03-22 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Alison,

I'm FM9.0p250 with Acrobat 9.3.1 Pro Extended, but I've done this as far
back as FM6 with older versions of Acrobat.

>From your existing right (odd page) and left (even page) master pages,
create new master pages. Call them something like LeftRotate and
RightRotate. Then, rotate the new master pages so the header is on the
right side of the page. Now rotate the main text area to properly fill the
rotated (now landscape) page (that is, the text starts at the top left of
the landscape page). Leave your headers and footers alone. Just rotate the
main body of the page and reshape it to fit the now landscape page. Don't
change the text flow. You now have lots of room for your landscape tables,
and your paragraph catalog still works as you expect. When you need to
insert your landscape tables, assign the appropriate RightRotate or
LeftRotate master page. Save As PDF will print it correctly. When you
print hardcopy from the PDF, select auto rotate and center.

TCS2 - Unable to install RoboHelp plugin for FrameMaker

2009-12-10 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Hello RJ J?cquez,

Thank you for your reply.

I tried the fix you suggested (see your email below).

The line that you said to add to my Maker.ini file was already there,
exactly as you have it.

Nonetheless, after creating a backup copy of Maker.in, I deleted the
existing line, added your line, saved and tried linking to a FM .book
again. I got the same error message.

I checked the path for:

RH4FMver9=Standard,RH4FMver9,C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Technical
Communication Suite 2\Adobe RoboHelp
8\RoboHTML\RHFrameMakerServer9.dll,all

It points correctly at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Technical
Communication Suite 2\Adobe RoboHelp 8\RoboHTML\RHFrameMakerServer9.dll

I rebooted my computer, and tried again. I got the same error message.

Do you have any other suggestion?

RE: TCS2 - Unable to install RoboHelp plugin for FrameMaker

Hi Richard et al,

In general the connection between FrameMaker and RoboHelp in TCS2 happens
automatically, however we have seen rare cases where the message below
does appear. In theses cases, I would recommend the following manual
steps to correct this issue:

1. Navigate to this folder: C:\Documents and Settings\rjacquez\Application
Data \Adobe\FrameMaker\9. I have included my local path, so you need to
substitute with your own username.
2. Locate the Maker.ini file and ideally make a backup of it, just in
case.
3. In the [APIClients] section of the maker.ini file, add the following
line, again making sure you are including the correct path:

RH4FMver9=Standard,RH4FMver9,C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Technical
Communication Suite 2\Adobe RoboHelp
8\RoboHTML\RHFrameMakerServer9.dll,all

4. You should now be able to launch RoboHelp and when you "link"
FrameMaker files, the FrameMaker application should launch correctly.

Please let me know and I will also post this on my blog below the message
you left. Sorry about the troubles and I do thank you for using our TCS2

Subject: TCS2 - Unable to install RoboHelp plugin for FrameMaker

I've upgraded to TCS2, and I'm just starting to explore RoboHelp 8.0.2.208

When I try to import a FM9.0.3 (9.0p250) file into RoboHelp, I get the
message, "Unable to install RoboHelp plugin for FrameMaker. Please close
FrameMaker and try again."

Well, FrameMaker is not running.

I've searched the Adobe site, and tried some Google searches, but can't
seem to find a resolution to this problem.

I'm on Win XP Pro v2002, SP3 on a Dell 450 workstation 2.40 GHz, 3GB RAM,
Dual 22" monitors.

Do you know how to resolve my problem, or can you point me to a TCS2 or
Robohelp discussion list?

Thanks for your help,
Richard

With Apologies to RJ - just can't quite feel the love or embrace this FM9 interface

2009-11-20 Thread ri...@inficon.com
I think the new interface is awesome. Much easier to use. Much faster.
Much more intuitive. I'm not having any of the problems you describe. I
run dual screens. Now, I can have all my pods, lists, etcetera in the
right screen, and have the whole book and doc displayed in my center
screen. I'd hate to go back to the "antiquated" days. FM6 seems cumbersome
now. True, I'd make a few changes to make dual screens even nicer. But,
all 'n all, I think Adobe did an outstanding job with the new FM9
interface.

9.0.2 Upgrade problem

2009-09-29 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Win XP on a Dell workstation. FM9 (TCS2, actually).

Since my FM9 Updater does not work, I'm trying to download the patches
from Adobe.com. I've been trying off/on for the past few days.

9.0.1 downloaded and installed fine (9.0p230).

9.0.2 downloaded a corrupt 10.8 MB (should be 21.6 MB) file. It does
nothing when I click on it.

9.0.3 downloaded fine, but won't install because my version of FM is
incorrect (I'm assuming because 9.0.2 is not installed).

Has anyone else had a problem downloading the FM 9.0.2 patch from
Adobe.com?

FrameMaker Patch (9.0p250) is now available

2009-09-28 Thread ri...@inficon.com
The updater in my TCS2 FM9 does not work. Clicking Help > Updates yields
nothing.

I tried the 9.0p250 link sent by Mr. Jacquez. The 9.0.3 update downloaded
OK, but it will not install because my FM version is wrong.

Looking at the Adobe Updates for FM9, I see 9.0.1, 9.0.2, 9.03. Since my
FM9 updater does not work, I manually downloaded these updates.

9.0.1 downloaded and installed fine. My FM9 is now at 9.0p230.

9.0.2 downloads a corrupt file. It will not install. The downloaded file
size is 11.32 KB, yet it is supposed to be 21.6 MB.

9.0.3 downloaded OK, but will not install because my FM version is wrong
(it wants 9p237, which I presume is installed by the 9.0.2 update).

Has anyone had any luck with downloading and installing 9.0.2?

Vaguely OT: Graphics Editor Recommendations?

Heya,

I'd like to solicit opinions on graphic editors from the community. I'm in
a
grey area between graphics needs, and I could use some advice on the
appropriate editor.

I care for three kinds of graphics.
*Simple line-art drawings, similar to kindergarten
mechanical
drawings
*Photos for inclusion in both printed and PDF media
*Software dialog screenshots for both printed and PDF
media

I'm running Vista with FM8.0. I'm considering upgrading to either TC2 or a
combination of FM9 and Acrobat 9 ProExt, depending on whether the latter
will support round-tripping PDFs in the review process.

Thoughts? Or perhaps a recommendation for a mailing list more appropriate
to
this question?

Thanks much in advance,
Lea

PDF Documentation

2009-01-22 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Kelly,

My experience is that my users prefer viewing PDFs, preferring PDF over
paper.

We shifted from delivering paper operating manuals to delivering PDFs on
CD a years ago. We were worried at first, but needlessly so. We even
offered to ship printed, bound hardcopy for free to any user that
requested it. Our users liked the change to PDF very much, and now prefer
PDFs. I have not had a request for a hardcopy manual in years. Actually,
customers have told their reps how much they prefer the PDFs.

Our Service Department initially balked when we talked about doing away
with hardcopy Service Manuals, but once they started using the PDFs they
shifted quickly away from paper. I can put E size schematics in a PDF
(beautiful vector drawings created directly from our CAD software --- for
example, Service Technicians can print just a portion of the schematic at
whatever zoom level they want on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper or print the
entire schematic on E size paper if the printer supports it). The Service
Technicians now have PDFs that contain all the Service information they
need, and they can always find a printer they can hook into to print
hardcopy, if need be. But, honestly, the standard for them is to work from
their laptop, viewing the PDF of the manual on screen.

If users are connected to a printer, they will print out pages of interest
to them. But, I've never heard of anyone actually printing a whole PDF to
hardcopy.

I do support a product line of hand held instruments used by HVAC
technicians; more of a main stream, over-the-counter product. For example,
when you call a HVAC technician to come service your central air
conditioning, they will probably have in their truck a small hand held
leak detector in a very tough case. We include small, short, paper manuals
for those hand held products. We do not supply a CD with the manual on it
to these people; they prefer paper (they can get their manual in PDF off
of our website, though). Honestly, these instruments don't really need a
manual anyway, and I suspect most of these paper manuals are quickly lost
once people figure out how to install the batteries, how to set the
sensitivity range, and turn it on/off.

But, for my larger, more complicated instruments, PDF alone is just fine
and is actually preferred by my customers. These instruments often come
with specialized control software, and since those users are already using
computers, PDF is a natural fit. This is especially true for instruments
that are used in clean room environments. Years ago I prepared very
expensive clean room paper manuals. A PDF viewed on their clean room
computer is now the preferred choice by my users. These instruments are
not sold "over the counter". They are purchased with Service Contracts
and/or installation by trained technicians. We don't even supply short
Quick Use Guides or Getting Started Guides (like those you get when you
buy a new printer for your home computer) because only trained technicians
should install the instrument. The installation parameters are in the
Operating Manual PDF on the CD we supply, but in most cases a trained
technician, working from a Service Manual PDF, does the actual instrument
installation.

Your situation may be different than mine. Perhaps your products are more
"mainstream". But, for me, PDF works well for all but my hand held
products, and PDF is preferred over hardcopy by all but my hand held
product users.

Is it your experience that users view PDF documentation on their
computer display in preference to printing it for use?

If so, by what ratio of view:print? Opinions and SWAGs are fine.

Regarding Internal Message

2008-10-02 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Charlene,

When my IS group installed the Windows SP3 patch on my WinXP system, I
started getting the message you described.

I'm FM6.0p405 on Windows XP v2002 Service Pack 3, Dell Precision 450
Workstation (Xeon CPU 2.4GHz, 3GB RAM)

I swear I have never knowingly imported any graphic into FM using OLE.

But, somehow in my older FM files that have some "copied into document"
graphics, once SP3 was installed these graphics became OLE and I got the
error that you describe.

I have to go through the "unsaving" FM file and delete all of these OLE
graphics, importing their replacement by reference. Once I got rid of
anything that was OLE, I could save the FM file.

Abit of a PITA, but luckily for me, these offending OLE graphics are
typically located on a reference page that's been carried along for years.
I did have a couple of documents that I had to search for the offending
OLE graphic. Abit tedious since I had to check the properties for every
graphic. But, sure enough I eventually found the offending OLE graphic and
once replaced, the file saved for me.

Good luck,
Richard

FrameMaker on Windows - Issues Discussed Today

2008-06-20 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Dov,

Thank you for taking the time to write your e-mails to the Framers E-Mail
List. Your insight and helpfulness is always greatly appreciated.

Your comment, "Large enterprises are notoriously slow in changing their
standard software configurations" certainly hits home with me. As a
manager in a large enterprise, I've been trying to upgrade from FrameMaker
6 for years now. Sometimes I think we will never upgrade, no matter how
well I present my arguments to do so. It all boils down to money and
customer satisfaction. My customers are very happy with my manuals, and
upper management is loathe to spend money to improve a process that
currently works very well.

Obviously, you are a tremendous proposal writer. How you justified the
computer system you use (and a 30" monitor no less) is nothing short of
amazing to me. If I were to put in a request for such a system, I probably
could hear my IS department laughing even though we are at opposite ends
of the building.

Again, thank you for taking the time to monitor and respond to the Framers
E-Mail List

Richard

FM 6 + mif2go, or just FM 8?

2007-08-09 Thread ri...@inficon.com
I'm using FrameMaker 6.0p405 on a Windows XP Dell 450 workstation.

I've just been asked to supply manuals in HTML. Currently, my deliverable
is PDF.

I am seriously considering mif2go for producing the HTML.

But, before I invest the time and money, I wondering if FrameMaker 8 with
its XML output will give me the same result, without mif2go?

The result being manuals that can be read by any web browser, produced
directly from FrameMaker 8.

Thanks for your insight,
Richard

FrameMaker to HTML

2007-07-25 Thread ri...@inficon.com
I am running FrameMaker 6.0p405 on Windows XP. Normally, I supply PDFs of
manuals (made from FrameMaker books).

I've got a request to supply a manual in HTML format. I've never looked at
HTML before, so I am clueless.

In FrameMaker 6.0p405, saving the book at HTML results in quite a mess.

Saving the Acrobat Professional 7.0.9 PDF as HTML results in a similar
mess.

How do I convert my FrameMaker files into HTML? Can you give me an outline
of the steps that I should follow, or point me at some written
instruction?

Thanks for you help,
Richard

FM v. RoboHelp

2007-06-20 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Hi Lin,

Your "Quality" person is way off mark. Sounds to me like you know what you
are talking about.

By the by, in the odd case where I've been required to submit HTML files
(for help systems), I've also used FM -> Mif2Go with great results.

But, HTML is rare for me. The majority of my deliverables are PDFs
(Operating Manuals, Field Service Manuals, Release Notes, Admin Guides,
etc.) and FrameMaker is clearly the superior tool for creating those
graphically rich documents with hyperlinked TOCs and Indexes and
hyperlinked cross-references in text (all the goodies we've come to expect
in modern manuals), not to mention FM's "Book" feature making life-cycle
management easy.

Stick to your guns. FrameMaker is the right tool for you.

Regards,
Richard

oversized drawings, schematics in book

2007-02-16 Thread ri...@inficon.com
Hi Kara,

I use oversize engineering drawings all the time in my Service Manuals.
Our drafting group sends our drawings in PDF format. I open the PDF in
Illustrator, rotate and size it as necessary, then scale it down so that
it is no more than 8.5 inches high (or 5.9 inches wide). Once I've got the
drawing rotated and sized, I save it as an EPS with a B&W preview.

In FrameMaker, I have set up a rotated whole page 2 cell table. One cell
holds the Table X_X auto number scheme, so I add the title of the drawing
to that to get a "Table X-X Title". Into the other cell, I place the EPS
file of the engineering drawing.

Of course, in FrameMaker it all look horrible because I am only looking at
the Preview. And, when I print the page, because the engineering drawing
is now scaled to 8.5" high, often I cannot read the drawings. This is
especially true of large electrical schematics.

But, when I PDF that FrameMaker page, I get a beautiful vector graphic
that I can (in a PDF viewer) zoom in on to see even the smallest detail.

Our Service Engineers like having the drawings in the PDF like this. They
can zoom in a small area and, if they want hardcopy, just print the zoomed
area (Print Current View) or they can choose a printer that prints large
paper sizes and select "Fit To Printer Margins" and print the page
containing the engineering drawing on a page size that's as large as their
printer will support.

Hope this helps,
Richard

Microsoft Windows 2000 5.00.2195 Service Pack 4. FrameMaker 6.0p405.
Acrobat Professional 7.0.8

I'm trying to create a mailto: link in FrameMaker that will be active in
the PDF.

I chose Special >> Hypertext..

In the Hypertext dialog, I selected Go To URL.

In the Syntax area I typed:

message URL "mailto:Thin.Film at inficon.com?subject=Thin Film Help"

Then I PDF the document.

When I click on the link in the PDF, my Lotus Notes opens, but the To:
field is Film at inficon.com (it should be Thin.Film at inficon.com).

There is nothing in the Subject: field (there should be Thin Film Help).

And my Internet Explorer browser opens, too, with a Action Cancelled error
screen (and mailto:Film at inficon.com is in the address field). I do not
want the browser to open.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!
