Re: [Framers] Frame/Distiller Question

2017-03-16 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Hi, Fred.

Hmmm ... okay. That makes sense too. FWIW, I have not had problems with PDF
generation in FrameMaker (through FM 12 anyway - I am not going to upgrade to
FM 15 or FM 17 unless someone _gives_ me the money for the cost that Adobe now
wants for that).

Plus the issue is now moot for me, I suppose. Since I have abandoned FrameMaker
for all my _new_ work ... after having used it for decades (since pre-Adobe
version 2 or 3 on a Sun 3/50 in 1988).

My only need for FM 12 is to edit older work ... and, _if_ I have the time (a
couple of days ... for more than simple changes to the document), I convert the
item to LaTeX for further work.

So, all my _new_ documents (very long specs really) are in LaTeX and I totally
love the "see the PDF as you edit with one click" approach of TeXstudio. And,
the consistent look and feel works great for specs ... I no longer need to
worry about screwed up formats either! And, no last-minute faux pas with trying
to generate PDF output that people occasionally experience here with their FM
books!

Yeah, the learning curve for LaTeX is steeper (TeXStudio is not WYSIWYG, but
the semi-real-time PDF generation is close enough). The results are perfect for
my needs. YMMV, of course!

(Sorry for the side-bar whining.)

I think the reason for installing FrameMaker after Acrobat is so that it will
configure itself to use the Distiller instance you have already installed. If
you do Acrobat after FrameMaker, Frame will be ignorant of the presence or
location of the Distiller installed by Acrobat, so some of the "automatic" PDF
generation methods (e.g., Save As PDF, Print to Adobe PDF) may or may not work
reliably. But if you use an explicit method (e.g., print to PostScript and then
distill the PS file to PDF, either directly or via a watched folder), either
installation order should be fine since you will be invoking Distiller
explicitly.

IIRC, it's Acrobat first, then Frame as a custom install without its version of
Distiller.

Nope, other way around - Acrobat first, then control FM so that it doesn't try

Re: [Framers] Frame/Distiller Question

2017-03-16 Thread Craig, Alison
I knew there was something to be careful of.

Thanks, Alison

I think you have it backward. What you want to avoid is letting FrameMaker
replace the newer, full-featured version oif Distiller that comes with the
Acrobat distribution with its older, headless Distiller.

I am currently setting up my new computer and I'm trying to remember if you're
supposed to install Frame or Acrobat (DC) first in order to ensure that the
"headless" (correct term?) version of Distiller is not crushed by Acrobat.

Can anyone enlighten me?

Re: [Framers] Frame/Distiller Question

2017-03-16 Thread Jeff Coatsworth
Acrobat first, then keep an eye on the FM install options - you might have to
opt for Custom & then expand out the parts that it thinks it should install to
verify that you don't get another Distiller installed.
