Dan,

When you Save As PDF or use File > Publish, all of that is taken care of for
you in the background.

Hi Winfried,

Thank you for the reply. I might be going back too far in the annals of
FrameMaker history, but I recall that one of the reasons to ensure that
Adobe PDF was the printer selected was to make sure that everything looked
the same on screen as it would ultimately appear in the PDF, as the font
information used in the display was somewhat dependent upon the print driver
selected. At least at one point, depending on the printer you had selected,
having the printer not being Adobe PDF was a Bad Thing(tm).

Is that no longer the case, or am I misremembering?

Hi Dan,

I also have FM 2019 64 bit and could not install SetPrint.
However, I think it's not needed any longer (only, if you want to print to a
file).
If you create a PDF via Save As PDF or via the Publish pod (with Use Acrobat
Distiller for PDF generation activated), the PDF is created correctly. I do
not notice any difference, when the printer is set to a physical printer or
to Adobe PDF.

When you create the PDF without Distiller, then you do not need SetPrint
anyway.

I also have some issues when FrameMaker creates the PDF.
I hope that this gets fixed soon!

Best regards

Winfried

a 32-bit application and is incompatible with 64-bit FM. Is there a 64-bit
version of that utility or some other method to always set the printer to

2. More of an FYI than an issue: By default, FrameMaker 2019 is configured

was only when I checked the box to use Distiller that I got fully intact

Subject: [Framers] PDFs and FM 2019

Good morning,

I'm just now getting around to testing 64-bit FM 2019 (upgraded from FM 2017)
under Windows 10 Enterprise, as I'm about to debark on our annual content
creation cycle. While I love the speed and responsiveness of the new 64-bit
version of Frame, I'm running into some issues with PDF creation, and my
searches of the list archive didn't come up with answers.

1. Sundorne's Setprint no longer appears to work, presumably because it was a
32-bit application and is incompatible with 64-bit FM. Is there a 64-bit
version of that utility or some other method to always set the printer to Adobe
PDF whenever opening a document? The error I receive is as follows:

Cannot initialize API client c:\program files\adobe\adobe framemaker
2019\fminit\plugins\SetPrint\SetPrint.dll.

Check for errors in the APIClients section of the maker.ini file in FrameMaker
install location or your %appdata% folder, verify that the client program
exists, and make sure you have enough swap space to run the client.

2. More of an FYI than an issue: By default, FrameMaker 2019 is configured to
NOT use Acrobat Distiller to create PDFs... why I have no idea. When I used the
default config, my PDFs had all sorts of missing elements throughout the
document... placed graphics, running feet, you name it. It was only when I
checked the box to use Distiller that I got fully intact PDFs.

3. Under FM 2017 and previous versions, as part of the "Save as PDF" process,
there was a tab in the dialogue box where I could set the paragraph styles to
include as PDF bookmarks and set their hierarchy. Where does that live now?
It's not part of any of the Publish options for PDF. Do I have to use the PDF
options in "Print" rather than part of the "Publish" workflow, in other words
set different settings in multiple places to effectively create PDFs?

Thanks in advance,

-Dan
