Now I understand Adobe's marketing scheme. If they ship it to you, it
comes in a cardboard box.

Buy Acrobat and get a free Xbox while supplies last. (apologies to

Well, darn. I misread the original message and thought you were talking
about FrameMaker 10 coming out. I knew about Acrobat X. Good luck
getting people to pronounce it as Acrobat 10. I still hear people say
OSX instead of OS 10. What a stupid naming idea. You just know some bug
will be found which will cause users to say that Acrobat X accidentally
deletes files and creates X-files. They're just asking for it. On the
other hand, version 30 will probably sell like hotcakes.

I hope the next version of FrameMaker stays with Arabic numerals instead
of converting to Roman ones. Sheesh.

Was he trying to say they have *to* offer free support? In other words,
does EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product

$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or
not...).

Just guessing here...

There is no such thing as a free lunch, Peter. ;-)

By the way, the price ratio seems to be the same for other products too: the
prices in the US store are 53 % of the prices in the European store!

Hmmm, I'm wondering is there is anyone buying FrameMaker 9 Server in Europe,
priced at 10746 EUR (14 967 USD). The price in the US store is 5685 EUR
(7919 USD).

I'm curious what the prices are in China or India, but they don't seem to
have an online Adobe Store (yet).

I said this on the list on 18 October, 2009
(http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2009-October/018261.html
)

Can anyone explain to me why it is that Adobe charges USD399 for the
upgrade of FrameMaker to version 9 for domestic customers but USD515
for the same thing for International customers.

There are no shipping costs when it has been downloaded and even if
shipping were included I don't see how they can charge USD116 for
 shipping a small box anyway.

No I haven't asked Adobe, who there could possibly tell me. Certainly
 no one on the helpdesk.

There was some discussion of it then.

Michael learned a new word then: rort.

Darryl learned something too. If in doubt, obfuscate.

1999. Versions went:

7
2000
9
2002
X3

6
7
8
9

Notice two version 7s and two version 9s, each roughly 10 years apart.

I've learned not to think on these things too hard. It hurts.

And, I have no idea why it is X instead of 10. :)

My only [usual] gripe is with the upgrade pricing (like all Adobe
upgrades!). It is $199 regardless of
whether you have Acrobat 9 Pro *or* Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to go to
Acrobat X Pro (there is only one X
Pro version - nothing called X Pro Extended as far as I can know).

IMHO, the price for going from 9 Pro Extended to X Pro should be lower
 - since we already paid a
premium for that 9 Pro Extended version!

Not just Adobe. Regardless of exchange rates, it's always been the case that
the dollar price is more or less the same numerical value as the sterling
price. Thus anything costing $100 in the US costs £100 over here (which is
sometimes twice the actual price). VAT (purchase tax) varies around Europe, but
is 17.5% here in the UK and about to rise to 20%.

In the inimitable words of Darryl:

"Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in
the perceived value of the product'."

Was he trying to say they "have *to* offer free support?" In other words,
does EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product
support? If so, this might explain the difference: $229 gets you a
product out the door;
$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or
not...).

Just guessing here...

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Yves Barbion
There is no such thing as a free lunch, Peter. ;-)

By the way, the price ratio seems to be the same for other products too: the
prices in the US store are 53 % of the prices in the European store!

Hmmm, I'm wondering is there is anyone buying FrameMaker 9 Server in Europe,
priced at 10746 EUR (14 967 USD). The price in the US store is 5685 EUR
(7919 USD).

I'm curious what the prices are in China or India, but they don't seem to
have an online Adobe Store (yet).

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Bill Swallow
Well, RoboHelp started getting wonky with regard to versions after
1999. Versions went:

7
2000
9
2002
X3
X4
X5
6
7
8
9

Notice two version 7s and two version 9s, each roughly 10 years apart.

I've learned not to think on these things too hard. It hurts.

Sorry about perpetuating a rumour. It must have been Acrobat X, not
FrameMaker X, but I can't find the email. I don't have time to beta
test--probably a good thing since I didn't know what it was anyway.

p.s. My discussion list posting was delayed by hours so I only found out

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-29 Thread Milton, Cynthia

Classification: SERCO-PUBLIC

Not just Adobe. Regardless of exchange rates, it's always been the case that
the dollar price is more or less the same numerical value as the sterling
price. Thus anything costing $100 in the US costs ?100 over here (which is
sometimes twice the actual price). VAT (purchase tax) varies around Europe, but
is 17.5% here in the UK and about to rise to 20%.

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-28 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

Can someone please explain to me why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard (Full, no
update) costs:

   - US $299 (216 EUR) when I buy it in the US Store
   http://bit.ly/aXhtLv
   - US $554 (401 EUR) when I buy it in a European Adobe Store
   - http://bit.ly/dtOSd3

I called Customer Support in Belgium and the explanation they gave me was
that the price in the US is lower because they don't have offer free
support. But I don't need support!

When I go to the Adobe store, a pop-up appears, telling me that I can have a
live text chat with an Adobe Product Specialist to assiste me with my
product selection. This is the result:

Please hold as we route your chat to an Adobe Representative.
Welcome to Adobe.com! My name is Darryl. May I assist you with your
selection today?
Darryl: Hello, how can I help you?
Yves: I'd like to know why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard costs $299 in the US
Store and $554 in the Belgian Adobe Store? What's the reason for this HUGE
difference in price?
Darryl: We understand your concern. We want to make sure that we are giving
our Customers the best products and at the right price.
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in the
perceived value of the product'.
Darryl: What are some of the tasks you like to accomplish using the
software?
Yves: Not relevant here: product is the same, price is different. Why?
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in the
perceived value of the product'.

Huh?

Re: [OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-28 Thread Alan T Litchfield

I had this same situation on this list some time back.

I said this on the list on 18 October, 2009 (http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2009-October/018261.html
)

When I go to the Adobe store, a pop-up appears, telling me that I

live text chat with an Adobe Product Specialist to assiste me with my
product selection. This is the result:

Please hold as we route your chat to an Adobe Representative.
Welcome to Adobe.com! My name is Darryl. May I assist you with your
selection today?
Darryl: Hello, how can I help you?
Yves: I'd like to know why Adobe Acrobat 9 Standard costs $299 in
the US
Store and $554 in the Belgian Adobe Store? What's the reason for
this HUGE

difference in price?
Darryl: We understand your concern. We want to make sure that we are
giving

our Customers the best products and at the right price.
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing
like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in
the

perceived value of the product'.
Darryl: What are some of the tasks you like to accomplish using the
software?
Yves: Not relevant here: product is the same, price is different. Why?
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing
like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in
the

perceived value of the product'.

Huh?

Well, darn. I misread the original message and thought you were talking
about FrameMaker 10 coming out. I knew about Acrobat X. Good luck getting
people to pronounce it as Acrobat 10. I still hear people say OSX instead of
OS 10. What a stupid naming idea. You just know some bug will be found which
will cause users to say that Acrobat X accidentally deletes files and
creates X-files. They're just asking for it. On the other hand, version 30
will probably sell like hotcakes.

I hope the next version of FrameMaker stays with Arabic numerals instead of
converting to Roman ones. Sheesh.

Was he trying to say they have *to* offer free support? In other words, does
EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product support? If
so, this might explain the difference: $229 gets you a product out the door;
$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or not...).

Just guessing here...

Sorry, I misspoke - not Nov 1.

Maybe Adobe has not formally announced anything, but according to Amazon, it is
a Dec 1 release date:

Given that Adobe is offering free shipping from Oct 17 through Nov 30 (from
the e-mail I received directly from Adobe on Oct 18) - that Dec 1 date *seems*
consistent to previous similar offers.

   - US $554 (401 EUR) when I buy it in a European Adobe Store
   - http://bit.ly/dtOSd3

I called Customer Support in Belgium and the explanation they gave me was
that "the price in the US is lower because they don't have offer free
support".

Huh?

I had a similar exchange with PayPal recently. That time, after wending my way

been a robot.

There has always been a huge differential in the price of Adobe products
between Europe and the US afaik. The reason is... yes, you guessed it... 'the
cost of doing business in each country'. I 'dunno about perceived value: if you
need a tool, you need the tool... it's not as if you're sitting there thinking

Maybe someone from Adobe could explain it?

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-28 Thread Butler, Darren J CTR USAF AFMC WR-ALC/ENGLTB
Lea Rush quipped: Not quite - his answer is somewhat related to the
question. ;)

But Daryl is quite deft at sticking to the talking points and he
even tried skirting the question with a change-the-subject quick-step.
He's already got the "We understand your concern blah-blah-blah" down
pat. Just replace "How can we help you?" with "What do I have to do to
get your vote?" and Daryl's political career is half-way to the Oval
Office.

I called Customer Support in Belgium and the explanation they gave me
was
that "the price in the US is lower because they don't have offer free
support". But I don't need support!

When I go to the Adobe store, a pop-up appears, telling me that I can
have a
live text chat with an Adobe Product Specialist to assiste me with my
product selection.

What's the reason for this
HUGE
difference in price?
Darryl: We understand your concern. We want to make sure that we are
giving
our Customers the best products and at the right price.
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing
like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in the
perceived value of the product'.
Darryl: What are some of the tasks you like to accomplish using the
software?
Yves: Not relevant here: product is the same, price is different. Why?
Darryl: Just so you know, there are many factors that decide pricing
like
'the cost of doing business in each country' and the 'difference in the
perceived value of the product'.

Huh?

I read one of Adobe's press releases that said "Acrobat X (pronounced 10)".
In my opinion, if you have to explain how to pronounce a product name, it
isn't a good choice for a name. Let's just hope the next version isn't XI.

I got my e-mail from Adobe about this sometime last week as I recall. I believe
the shipping date is Nov 1, but forget where I saw that.

And, I have no idea why it is "X" instead of "10". :)

My only [usual] gripe is with the upgrade pricing (like all Adobe upgrades!).
It is $199 regardless of whether you have Acrobat 9 Pro *or* Acrobat 9 Pro
Extended to go to Acrobat X Pro (there is only one X Pro version - nothing
called X Pro Extended as far as I can know).

IMHO, the price for going from 9 Pro Extended to X Pro should be lower - since
we already paid a premium for that 9 Pro Extended version!

Well, darn. I misread the original message and thought you were talking
about FrameMaker 10 coming out. I knew about Acrobat "X." Good luck getting
people to pronounce it as Acrobat 10.

Sheesh.

Was he trying to say they "have *to* offer free support?" In other words, does
EU law (or general expectation of EU customers) require free product support?
If
so, this might explain the difference: $229 gets you a product out the door;
$554 buys you hand-holding (whether you predict you will ask for it or not...).

Just guessing here...

Sorry, I misspoke - not Nov 1.

Maybe Adobe has not formally announced anything, but according to Amazon, it is
a Dec 1 release date:

http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65083161-Acrobat-X-Professional/dp/B0046DH8PC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8=1288308342=8-1

Given that Adobe is offering "free shipping" from Oct 17 through Nov 30 (from
the e-mail I received directly from Adobe on Oct 18) - that Dec 1 date *seems*
consistent to previous similar offers.

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-28 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Yeah, it's really quite amusing. I got an email about beta testing
FrameMaker X, and they said that "X" is pronounced "ten".

Say what? When? And are they really going to call it X instead of 10?

Well, I have to thank Dov for clarifying the numbering thing because I
thought "Acrobat X (pronounced 10)" meant a return to version two! 8^0.

I had this same situation on this list some time back.

I said this on the list on 18 October, 2009
(http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2009-October/018261.html
)

There was some discussion of it then.

Michael learned a new word then: rort.

Darryl learned something too. If in doubt, obfuscate.

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-28 Thread Layton, Debbie
How quaint. Roman Numerals for a software release. Will the
documentation be created using Old English Text? I'm very curious why
Marketing chose to do that.

Acrobat X is not shipping yet nor has Adobe committed to a November 1
ship date.

It is pronounced "Acrobat Ten" - as usual, it's a marketing "thing" ...

[OT] Adobe's pricing policy

2010-10-28 Thread John Hogan
As near as I can tell from their website, Adobe have abandoned the 3-D
functionality altogether in version 10. So a big chunk of "extended" is gone
from Acrobat X Pro anyway. Maybe they should pay us to make the switch from
Acrobat 9 Pro Extended to Acrobat X Pro! Oh well.

IMHO, the price for going from 9 Pro Extended to X Pro should be lower -
since we already paid a premium for that 9 Pro Extended version!
