The cross-file linking issue is described at
http://www.microtype.com/FM_bugs.html#FM8UnicodeCrossFileLinks
(together with sample PDFs produced from the same source FM file, using
FM7.2 and FM8.0, and FM8.0+TimeSavers 5.3)

The problem will not be noticed when the PDFs are :
-- accessed locally using Acrobat 8.x, but will be noticed when
cross-file links are activated through a web browser (cross-file links
in a PDF stored in an intranet/internet site) linking
-- viewed in earlier Acrobat versions or some non-Adobe PDFs viewers

Notice that in some cases, internal links are transformed to cross-file
links, which reference the same file as a target. In such a case, links
within the same file won't work when the PDF is viewed through a web
browser.

>As to your file lock/unlock issue...

I don't see a problem here, and experience the same behavior in FM7.2
and FM8.0.
In any case, the "locking" (view only) state has no implications on PDFs
and links.
Links should be tested in PDF, as links that work in FrameMaker may not
work in Acrobat (and sometimes links that don't work in FrameMaker do
work in Acrobat).

RE: Bugs, or features, in FM8

2007-12-31 Thread orandeep
I have been using FM8 and Acrobat 8 for some months now without any sign of a
hyperlink issue. I use cross-references, internal and external hyperlinks,
TOC's, Indexes. I make lists of markers, elements, paragraphs, etc. all of
which are "hot" All of the links seem to work as intended in PDF. They work
both when I use the Save As PDF abd when I use the print & distill method.
Since we are about to upgrade a very large project involving thousands of
unique manuals and hundreds of thousands of pages monthly, I am curious as to
what your workflow/setup is. If there is a flaw, I have not found it so far.
As to your file lock/unlock issue, FM8 has an icon on the Formatting Toolbar
"Toggle View Only" that lets you switch with a mouse click. You no longer need
"Esc F l k" (Not "Ctrl") unless you prefer the shortcut over the icon. If you
wish to save it in view only mode, you do "Save As" Save as type: View Only.
Your file will then be in view only mode when next opened. The Formatting
toggle icon allow you to exit View Only for editing purposes as you wish. You
are not really "locking" the file (even though Adobe uses this term in help and
other places). The "lck" file that Frame creates for all opened files just
informs others that the file is already open for editing if they attempt to
also open it. Many confuse this "lck" with the View Only "locking".
If you really like shortcuts, you can save your non View Only file as View Only
with this sequence: Alt f a Tab v Tab Enter Tab Enter. (There will be a test on
this later).

Since our Kouroo project now has an effective workaround for the fact
that the hypertext linkage between FM8 and PDF files has not yet been
implemented (by way of first saving a FM8 file as a FM7 MIF file
before distilling a PDF), the initial panic has subsided. It turns
out that it's not a big deal and our project can wait patiently for
Adobe to fix this.

I've noticed something else, however. I've always been in the habit
of using the locking/unlocking feature of FM, using the keystrokes
"Ctrl F l k" to transit the files back and forth between a locked
"use condition" to an unlocked "edit condition." However, in FM8, if
you do a "Ctrl s" save before you do the "Ctrl F l k Ctrl w" to lock
and close a file, your "Ctrl F l k" is wasted effort as the file
simply doesn't stay locked.

Bugs, or features, in FM8

2007-12-28 Thread Austin Meredith

(If you can remember *not* to do a "Ctrl s" before doing your "Ctrl F
l k Ctrl w," then locking still works in FM8.)

So, is this a bug, or a feature, of FM8?

In the old days, there was a free thingie called "Frame Reader" or
something like that, that your users could use to access your work
product. It was a full version of FM free for download, but it was
save-disabled. Later on, when you printed from this, it came to be
that each printed page would bear a gray diagonal "trial copy"
marker. This reader product became harder and harder to find on the
Adobe website, and eventually disappeared. More recently, when a user
downloads and installs a save-disabled trial version of FM, this
trial version is good for only a month. Meanwhile, Adobe has been
developing Acrobat and replacing Frame Reader as a way to deliver our
content to our customer -- and has gradually been removing more and
more of the limitations of Acrobat.

Back in the days of this "Frame Reader," there was a purpose to the
locking/unlocking feature of FM. Now, however, with this bug (or
feature) in FM8, I'm not even bothering to lock and unlock the files
anymore! I'm simply telling my users, "For hypertext in an Acrobat
document, you can just click on a button, but for hypertext in a
FrameMaker document, you'll need to remember to hold down the control
key while you click on it."

Can anyone think of a reason why we need to file a bug report on
this? Can we now just let go of the lock/unlock thingie -- consider
it as a piece of our evolutionary history?
