Cross References not working in PDF

2011-03-24 Thread Berman, Robert
All,

Our standard documentation is created in Unstructured FrameMaker 9 and
printed to Adobe PDF. We are noticing that some of the cross references
in the PDF file are not working. These could be cross references to
figures, tables, or other sections within the manual. When we look at
the source FrameMaker files there doesn't seem to be an issue; we can
CTRL+ALT click on the cross reference and it takes us to the marker
without issue. We are thinking that the issue is related to content
copied into the document from different FrameMaker files. When we create
new content (example: anchored frame followed by a figure caption) and
create a cross reference the link works fine in the generated PDF. To
fix the problem we followed these steps:

1) Manually clicked on all of the links in the generated PDF and
identified the cross references that are not working.

2) Opened the source FrameMaker files in question, CTRL+ALT click the
non-working cross reference, and delete the marker.

3) Used the Cross References pod to identify any unresolved cross
references.

4) Recreate the cross reference.

5) Generate the PDF. (print to Adobe PDF)

This works but it takes a long time to do this manually. Does anyone out
there know of something we are doing incorrectly or know of a
third-party solution that can check for this and fix it?

This problem is being seen on computers running both Windows XP SP3 (3GB
RAM) and Windows 7 64-bit (8GB RAM), all FrameMaker 9 versions updated
to the latest revision. Each computer is also running Acrobat 9
Professional.

Thank you,

Figure cross references not working in PDF

2010-12-07 Thread David Millis
I have both Figure (Figure 5-3) and Heading and Page (see ABC on page
43) cross references in my book. The Heading and Page links work fine
throughout the PDF but the Figure references don't work at all. I've
tried creating the PDF by using both Save As to PDF and printing the
book to PDF - both with the same result.

My Figure Title paratag is included on the Tags tab. Does anyone have
a suggestion?

Frame 7.2, Adobe Reader 7, and Acrobat 9

Thanks in advance.

RE: Figure cross references not working in PDF

2010-12-07 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Oh, I just found it in Acrobat 9. To reduce your PDF file size after
using Create Named Destinations for All Elements and Paragraphs, do
this:
1. Choose Advanced PDF Optimizer
2. Deselect everything except Clean up
3. On the Clean Up Settings panel, deselect everything except Discard
unreferenced named destinations, and hit OK.

Note: the online help where I found this says Because this option does
not check for links from other PDF files or websites, it does not fit in
some workflows. I think TimeSavers gets around this problem.

Good luck!

RE: Figure cross references not working in PDF

2010-12-07 Thread Fei Min Lorente
Hi David:

I have the same FrameMaker version and Acrobat version and I had the
same problem with cross-references to figures and tables. That is, I'm
assuming you mean that in the PDF, the link to the target doesn't work?

I had to solve it by turning on Create Named Destinations for All
Elements and Paragraphs. You'll find this under the Links tab on the
PDF Setup (Format Document). The down side is that it bloats your file
something terrible (can make it five times as big). You can solve this
by manipulating the PDF file later in Acrobat, but I haven't done this
since using Acrobat 6, and I don't remember exactly how. Shlomo would
say this is risky anyway.

Since we automated our output from FrameMaker, I had to find another way
to unbloat our PDFs, so I invested in TimeSavers because it has an
unbloat feature. You can get more information about TimeSavers here:
http://www.microtype.com/.
