Re: FM 8 to ePub?

2011-11-07 Thread Keith . Soltys

I work for a small publisher, and about half of our (print) books are in

FM8. In the last year we have migrated all new projects to InDesign,
mostly because most of our contract book designers work in InDesign and
we needed to be consistent with what they were doing. We have 8 to 10
books in FM8 that I need to migrate to ePub, ideally with as little cost

as possible. After this conversion, we won’t be using FrameMaker much
anymore, so I don’t want to invest any more than needed.

 So… some questions:

--Do I need to upgrade to a more current version of Frame to do this?
--Is there an intermediary piece of software I need to buy?
--Can anyone recommend a good reference (web site, book, etc.)
describing
how to convert Frame documents to ePub?

 Thanks in advance.

 Tina

Others have offered many suggestions that I won't duplicate, although I do
concur that using Calibre is probably your best bet if you don't want to
buy something like WebWorks that has direct FM support.

You might consider buying a copy of How to Format Your eBook for Kindle,
Nook, Smashwords, and Everything Else, by Paul Salvette. While the
approach the author takes for the initial formatting (converting Word to
plain HTML) isn't suitable for you, he does offer a lot of advice on how
to use Calibre as well as lots of detail on the ePub format, including how
to work around or resolve many formatting problems that you might run
into. The book is only $3.00 in Kindle format. (I haven't checked, but I
wouldn't be surprised if it was available in ePub from BN).

InDesign actually has quite a bit of Frame-like features, including
straddled heads. Not everything, of course, but a lot and more with each
version. Some things, like tables, typography, graphics, and ePubs are much
more advanced in InDesign. Generally, it is RTF as the middle man that lacks
the functionally.

I should have mentioned the excellent Mif2Go. A must have utility.

Another option for converting Frame files to InDesign is DTPtool's Mif
Filter for InDesign.

BTW, many of our customers have used the Word RTF output to get to
InDesign.
You don't get to keep all Frame features, since ID doesn't have them, but
it's a good start.

I would take WebWorks ePublisher: www.webworks.com

It works with FM 7, 8, 9, 10 with Word and DITA.

After this conversion, we won't be using FrameMaker much anymore, so I
don't want to invest any more than needed.

I actually knew the price. My main point is that the OP did not want to
invest any more than needed--the price should have been noted.
Of course, than needed is a vague term, since $795 for conversion of 10
books is certainly not that much per book.
I think the RTF to InDesign method should work for basic ePub books, but I
have not seen the Frame files or the type of formatting involved.

I have not used the commercial ePublisher, but I really dislike renewable
licenses.
I know you usually get updates when renewing, but how many people are still
using Frame 7?
I like purchased licenses with the USER option to upgrade or not.

As David Creamer mentioned, the best tool for ePub,
and other ebook formats, is Calibre, which is free
or low cost as you choose (by donation).

You can feed Calibre either HTML or RTF. The native
forms produced by Frame leave a lot to be desired.
Mif2Go produces both with high quality, quickly and
simply.

BTW, many of our customers have used the Word RTF
output to get to InDesign. You don't get to keep

Ordinarily, Mif2Go is $295 for a *perpetual* (not
one-year!) license that includes all upgrades for
the first year, with upgrades and support renewable
annually for $75.

However, for many years we've been offering it for
free to the unemployed, underemployed consultants,
academics, Open Source providers, and many nonprofits.
Reading your mission statement, we see:

Trial Guides is a different kind of company. We don’t
help the defense bar. Period. We only publish books for
plaintiff’s lawyers, and we will never publish any product
aimed at helping the defense, to damage a member of
society who has already been damaged.

Bravo! we say. So we'll be happy to provide Mif2Go
free of charge, with full support, should you want it.

So. some questions:

--Do I need to upgrade to a more current version of Frame to do this?

No. Please don't. We support Frame 6 up, even 5.5.6
in most respects. Newer versions are **not** better.

--Is there an intermediary piece of software I need to buy?

No, but a donation to the Calibre folks would be a
nice touch. ;-)

--Can anyone recommend a good reference (web site, book, etc.) describing
how to convert Frame documents to ePub?

Again, I'd have a look at what's available from Calibre:
  http://calibre-ebook.com/

All the best to you!

Tina,

NOTE: I work for WebWorks.

There are various options available to you. It may come down to a
trade-off of time versus money.

WebWorks ePublisher can create ePUB books from FrameMaker sources. It
runs $795 for a renewable license (1 year of use and support). You can
format the ePUB book with ePublisher's Style Designer.

Other options may exist, though you might have to spend more time
creating the ePUB books than would be worth the effort.

I exported some Frame 7 files out as HTML and converted to basic ePub using
Calibre (donation-ware) for a client.
I also tuned up the ePub in Sigil. As long as your formatting needs are
basic, it worked OK.

Another option is to save as RTF and use Calibre or import into InDesign. If
you show import options when placing the RTF file, you can include graphics.
By the way, InDesign 5.5 is a must-have upgrade for ePubs.

Re: FM 8 to ePub?

2011-11-04 Thread Scott Prentice

Hi Tina...

Since ePub is an output format, it seems that you should be migrating
from FM to whatever you're going to use for authoring/maintenance, then
figure out how to get from that format to ePub. Unless these books are
just to be published to ePub and never touched again.

With ePub, it really depends on what you want to deliver (from a layout
and formatting perspective) and what type of content you're working
with. Certain types of content are better suited for ePub than others.
The simplest option is to export each book to HTML (using any number of
tools that can produce very simple HTML), then use one of the free
converters available to convert the HTML into ePub. This will give you
an ePub file, but may not really be be what you want to deliver.

In theory you could upgrade to FM10 and RH9 (or TCS) which gives you a
path to ePub, but if this is just a one-time shot, that seems like overkill.

I just wrote an article for tcworld magazine that gives an overview of
ePubs and related processes. It might give you some useful info ..
