In defense of FrameMaker; it doesn't assume the mere text of a URL
should be active; it makes that your prerogative. In that sense, it's
much more like an HTML editing environment than a word processor. There
are many cases in which one would very much NOT want a URL to be
auto-hyperlinked (e.g., a code snippet intended to be copied).

some change Word has automatically made to the text I'm entering.

Actually, it's the reverse process that Word uses. This way you can include a 
URI as plain text and not have the program assume you wanted a link. 

Unlike Microsoft, Adobe does not usually assume it knows what you want to do.

insert the link using the Special  Hypertext command. In the Hypertext
dialog box, set Command to Go to URL, and in the text box below where
message URL appears, append the URL for the site you wish to link to.

I would say that someone can write such a script. Perhaps someday, that someone 
will be I. :) I wonder what it would cost to ask
someone, who knows how, to write either an API client or a script (of either 
type, I suppose).
