Re: [Framers] FrameMaker 12 and Parallels on a Mac (running Windows 10)

2020-08-31 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain
Thanks, Monique!

Yes, I found that approach mentioned in my archives for this list, and tried
it. Did improve things a bit – the menu is more readable and the icons show up.
Although still very small for both.

I just have to be very careful with my mouse positioning when I click, but I am
not using FM12 much at all, so not an issue.

Also, I am using a Logitech mouse (an MX-3 Master) on that Mac that is way
better than the trackpad (I like multiple buttons – not used to multiple finger
pad access!).

Though, I’ll just have to display the Mac on my large 27” display (it is 4K, so
still will have small menus) to make things readable to my aging eyes.

Hi Z,

i think the solution is to run Parallels with Graphics setting ’scaled’ in
stead of 'Best for Retina'. The problem is that the FM user interface is not
prepared for high-resolution display. This was only resolved by the Adobe
development team with version FM 2017.

You can't open a FrameMaker file created with a later version with an earlier
version of FrameMaker. In other words, if you have FrameMaker 12, you can't
open FrameMaker 2019 files. If you are going to work in a mixed environment,
you can save the files as MIF (Maker Interchange File) and those will open in
the earlier version. Or, take a look at my ConvertDocs

Are Adobe FrameMaker 12 and the Adobe FrameMaker 2019 release that

[Framers] Glossary popups FrameMaker 12 to Responsive HTML

2017-04-11 Thread Pat Christenson
Hi all -

I'm using FrameMaker 12 unstructured.

In a document that will be published as Responsive HTML, I need the user to be
able to point (or click) at part of a screenshot and a popup opens, explaining
that feature.

I've tried using the marker types Glossary and GlossaryTerm, and they work fine
as long as both are in text. But when I create a text frame on top of the
screenshot in the anchored frame and put the marker in the text frame, it's a
no-go.

I'm guessing it works when both are in the text because they're in the same
flow (A:). But FrameMaker won't let me tag the text frame on the screenshot A
and if I create a text frame outside the anchored frame and tag it A,
FrameMaker won't let me drag it into the frame.

So long story short, is there a way to get this work? Should I use something
other than Glossary markers? I've noticed that the Popup marker type is
available but appears to do nothing and is no longer mentioned in FrameMaker
Help.

Re: [Framers] import xml into FrameMaker 12?

2016-05-26 Thread Scott Prentice

Thanks Lin.

DITA-FMx can help you get FM files from DITA XML, although it's really
intended as a replacement for the built-in DITA support in FM.

Bjørn .. when you say "convert and publish xml files into FM 12," what
do you mean? Does your client want to convert the XML files into FM
files and stop using the XML files as the source? Or do they want to use
FM as the authoring tool for the XML files? (Or something else?)

In order to open/edit an XML file in FM you need a structured
application designed specifically for the model in the XML files. If
these XML files are a common standard (DITA, DocBook, ??), you can
likely use one of the available structure applications to open those
files. If not, then you'd first need to develop the structure application.

Once you have a structure application that lets you open the files, you
can ..

- edit and save back to the original XML model (basically letting you
edit the XML files in FM),
- or you can save those files to an FM binary file (letting you author
in the structured FM interface, but not using the XML files any more),
- or you can take those structured FM files and strip the "structure"
from them (resulting in unstructured FM files)

Depending on the end goal, those are the basic processes. So the first
thing you want to do is to clarify the end goal, and to figure out what
XML model is used by the files. If it's DITA (or DocBook), you're in
good shape. If something else, you've got a bit of effort (or cost)
involved to develop a structure application.

Here's the docs on structure application development (see the like-named
section) ..

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/framemaker.html

If you'd like someone to make the structure application for you, I'd be
happy to help .. contact me off-list.

Cheers,
...scott

[Framers] Master Page behavior (FrameMaker 12)

2016-05-23 Thread Pat Christenson
Running FrameMaker 12 on Windows.

In a right/left document, when we add content on the last page that runs over
and creates a new page, the new page matches the layout of the previous page,
instead of following the right/left convention.

When you go to Master Pages and return to Body Pages, you get the message about
some pages having overrides and it's always the last page. Choosing to Remove
Overrides (or using Format/Page Layout/Master Page Usage) fixes it for the one
instance, but the next time you add more content, it's the same problem.

Any help is appreciated.

Couldn't this be done in the MIF file with Find/Replace?

I'm sure there's someone out there with a lot more MIF experience than I have
who could speak to this option? (I have done a few large "fixes" in the MIF for
other issues but only after a Frame expert from this list has offered guidance

Subject: [Framers] Conditional Text Question FrameMaker 12

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has a solution for the following scenario.
I have 3 different conditional text tags in one of my files.
One of these conditional text tags was created and applied inadvertently and
should really be applied as one of the other 2 conditional text tags.
For Example this file contains Conditional Text A, Conditional Text B, and
Conditional Text C.
The information tagged as Conditional Text C should really be applied and only
tagged as Conditional Text B so that I can delete the Conditional Text tag,
Conditional Text C.
Is there an easy way to do this? I tried to Edit the conditional text tag but
that didn't work.

Re: [Framers] Conditional Text Question FrameMaker 12

2016-05-06 Thread jang

Hi Julie,

I think this calls for scripting, as there is no way to redefine the current
conditional tags to an already existing one. the scripting environment is
included in FM since version 10. If there are enough tags it might be worth
your time or budget to either do the scripting yourself or get an experienced
scripter to do it for you. I am too busy but you can ask Rick Quatro. He knows
his way around the FM scripting jungle. I am guessing he might respond pretty
quickly to this message.

Good luck

Or Find, then Change, rinse and repeat if you want to be sure you're

Hi Klaus

Thank you for your reply. I've tested this again and the problem seems to
occur with files which are on Dropbox. I checked Edit > Preferences >
Global > Dropbox, but I didn't find any special settings there.

So yes, I think we can call this a bug. My workaround is now to save the
file in a non-Dropbox folder and then move it to Dropbox.

Cheers

Yves, in my environment (W7, x64) FM-12.0.4.445 behaves as expected.
Have tested with Read-only files also.
A locked file however shows only a limited menu set and no save at all.

Is it a document form a nework and connection is down now?
Does it happen with other files also?
Try deleting %appdata%\Adobe\FrameMaker\12 before restarting FM. Save maker.ini
first
in case you have special settings in maker.ini and redo these one by one later.

No other ideas here.

Hi group

I see that the "Save as" menu command is grayed out in FrameMaker 12

Is this a known Fm12 bug?

[Framers] FrameMaker 12 - RoboHelp 11 - Graphics Conversion shows bad results

2016-02-08 Thread thomas . zeisig
We are using TCS 5 and encounter blurry graphics when we convert a
FrameMaker book to HTML Help.
All graphics are referenced in the FrameMaker files and are mainly Tiffs
with 632x475 px at 200 dpi.
Due to our layout we want to become the graphics in the on-line help
enlarged to 200 %.
It seems that RoboHelp converts the graphics in two stages, in the first
stage the graphics will be resized to 96 dpi, 303x228 px.
In the second stage this 96 dpi graphic is then scaled to 200% which
results in bad image quality.
Is there any way to change this conversion behaviour?
If I resize such a tiff in Photoshop I get perfect quality, but it is a
one stage conversion.
BTW: We tested RoboHelp 2015 too, with the same result.

Best Regards - Thomas Zeisig

Rick,According to the Using FrameMaker 12, page 481:FrameMaker includes an
XSLT processor that allows you to associate an XSLT file with an XML structure
application or XML document, and apply the transformations defined in that
document when importing from or exporting to XML. FrameMaker supports W3C XSLT

Re: FrameMaker 12 XSLT Version

2015-06-10 Thread David Spreadbury
Rick,I missed this other reference:
The output is created using a parser installed on the machine and registered
with FrameMaker through maker.ini settings. XALAN and SAXON are installed by
default on your machine with FrameMaker. XALAN supports XSLT 1.0 and SAXON
supports XSLT 2.0. Both XALAN and SAXON are JAXP compliant.
Since Saxon is included, it just might be possible to use XSLT 1.0 and/or 2,0.
YMMV

Has anyone successfully run FrameMaker 12 on any version/distribution of Linux?
If so, which version and what did you do to make it possible?

Please and Thanks!

Has anyone successfully done the above?

i.e., installed FrameMaker and Acrobat using Wine under Ubuntu? And made it

reason they dropped topics, used larger type and screen shots, added

why view on phone WAS: online FrameMaker 12 Documentation totally revamped

2014-12-16 Thread Craig Ede
I think this is probably a proof of concept issue. I worked for a packaging
machine making company that would love to be able to have their manuals
available to operators as they walked around their machines. Sometimes the
chain of machines was a block long. They have also considered issuing
tablets with their machines for the operators to use.

Thanks for the links Maxwell. The PDF looks interesting.

As for the HTML, I understand Responsive HTML is cool and all that and has
some applications, but I am trying to come up with a scenario where I would
look up something in FrameMaker Help on my phone. If I need to research
something in FrameMaker Help, I think I would open a browser in one of my
two desktop monitors instead of trying to read it on a tiny phone screen
(Galaxy S3). Is this capability something requested by other Frame users or
is Adobe simply showing that it can be done via Frame?

Sure, it makes sense to generate all of the output formats and make

WebHelp as the format for the primary copy of the help on adobe.com
just serves to highlight its limitations.

I know that Microsoft has never made any such statement about the MS Word

one is that they use a proprietary in-house tool or system, and another is that

RE: why view on phone WAS: online FrameMaker 12 Documentation totally revamped

2014-12-16 Thread Craig, Alison
In the old days (circa 1993), when Microsoft actually produced hard copy
manuals - and they were fabulous manuals from a content standpoint - they did
actually use MS Word to produce them (my husband was a Microsoft programmer at
the time).

Since they've gone to online help, it's more about the online than the help
- unless of course you need to do something really difficult like open a file
or apply a bold font style.

The kind of help a seasoned writer would be looking for is pretty much
non-existent.

I don't wanna be overly blunt, but the new online help basically looks terrible
(on my Windows 7 / IE10 default setup). The fonts are enormous and you have to
click through too many layers of headings to find anything,
with no ToC or breadcrumb trail.

The plain fact is that the printed manual trumped any of this new-fangled
gubbins.
If Adobe really feel it eats into their profit margin too much to include it
with the software as standard,
could they not consider selling a printed manual separately, as an additional
option?

I agree. I downloaded the PDF instead. A lot of web content seems to be
going the way of cell phone/small screen display. In the USA I see more
and more sites starting to look like cell phone displays with less real
information. It appears that instead of implementing responsive HTML,
companies are implementing cell phone displays as the standard for all
devices. I often think the information is also becoming more pedestrian,
i.e less technical.

I remember looking up how to install a home furnace. It said step three
was the hardest; Step 3: Locating a furnace contractor.

I that light, the only hard part about implementing Framemaker is locating
a good FM consultant.

RE: online FrameMaker 12 Documentation totally revamped; in PDF

2014-12-15 Thread Keith Soltys
Agreed too. The online help is not great. I am using Frame 10 and am trying to
make up my mind about putting through a request for 12 or wait until 13, which
I’m guessing will be out next year. So I want to browse through the docs to get
an idea of how helpful the new features will be.

The PDF is much easier for this purpose.

OTOH, either still beats the “help” in Word 2010 or 2013 which is completely
useless. I just use Google when I need to find out something.

Re: online FrameMaker 12 Documentation totally revamped; in PDF

2014-12-15 Thread Scott Prentice

Sorry if this is obvious to some .. I'm thinking it's not obvious to all.

This Help system *is* responsive .. it's just that the response points
seem to be at odd sizes (at least to me). If your browser window is
around 1300px wide, you'll get the full set of features. At around
1000px you get a reduced set. Then around 700px it bumps down again.

Losing the TOC at 1300px seems a bit extreme. Personally, I'd set that
at 600-800px. Not everyone works with a browser at full screen, and
there's no reason that you need so much room for the content pane. Keep
the TOC visible until the content pane is too small to be useful.

I really like the fact that this is responsive .. the problem is that a
responsive layout needs to be well designed at all sizes. That does
complicate things a bit, but it's worth the effort in the long run.

Cheers,

...scott

I agree. I downloaded the PDF instead. A lot of web content seems to

more and more sites starting to look like cell phone displays with
less real information. It appears that instead of implementing
responsive HTML, companies are implementing cell phone displays as the
standard for all devices. I often think the information is also
becoming more pedestrian, i.e less technical.

I remember looking up how to install a home furnace. It said step
three was the hardest; Step 3: Locating a furnace contractor.

I that light, the only hard part about implementing Framemaker is
locating a good FM consultant.

The plain fact is that the printed manual trumped any of this

If Adobe really feel it eats into their profit margin too much to

could they not consider selling a printed manual separately, as an

That seems like really bad UI to me. Not only does the TOC disappear,
there's nothing you can click on to get it.

Is that the default appearance of FrameMaker's / RoboHelp's Responsive
HTML5 output? To me it looks amateurish and ugly, the kind of bad
design that I was happy to lose when I migrated from RoboHelp to
WebWorks ePublisher Pro. Viewing it on my desktop, type and icons are
too big. On my Android phone, running text is SMALLER than the
default, and adobe.com won't let me view the old version.

Why even use responsive help for FrameMaker? It's not like anyone's
running the application on a smartphone.

At around 1280 pixels or wider, there's a TOC nav tree in a left-hand
pane. In the middle of the border between the TOC and the topic pane,
there's a left arrow you can click to minimize the TOC. Minimized,
there's a right arrow to expand it.

At less than 1280, the expanded or minimized TOC disappears, and I see
no way to get it. There is a button in the top left corner you can
click to *replace* the current topic with a hard-to-navigate version
of the TOC with huge amounts of white space.

I only looked at it on my phone to see if the design choices that are
awful on the desktop made any more sense.

Thanks for the links Maxwell. The PDF looks interesting.

As for the HTML, I understand Responsive HTML is cool and all that and has some
applications, but I am trying to come up with a scenario where I would look up
something in FrameMaker Help on my phone. If I need to research something in
FrameMaker Help, I think I would open a browser in one of my two desktop
monitors instead of trying to read it on a tiny phone screen (Galaxy S3). Is
this capability something requested by other Frame users or is Adobe simply
showing that it can be done via Frame?

The search seems to be broken, e.g. the results for footnote do not
include this Create and edit footnotes topic:

http://help.adobe.com/en_US/framemaker/using/WS6C3D24E6-2965-48bb-B6CF-50D1439AEB01.html

Or maybe you just cut some content. Searching for endnote finds nothing.

Something's wrong with the word spacing, compare old and new to see what I mean:

I prefer the smaller text in the old CSS.

The new version has larger type, more white space, more headings, and
lower dpi for screen shots, so, for example, the content on page 347

Just compare the TOC of the help file that ships with Frame 12 against the TOC
of the new guide. The chapter that includes endnotes, in the current version, is
missing several sections in the new version.A simple search of the new version

webinar recommendation: FrameMaker 12 regular expression search

2014-12-01 Thread Craig Ede
Rick Quatro did a great presentation on FrameMaker 12 Regular expression search

would have taken a while to work through on my own. Highly recommended. See it

Maxwell's short presentation on FM Tables was very good, too. One of the things
mentioned was the ability to navigate between the cells with the arrow keys
that is part of the 12.0.3. update.

Categories mentioned include:

Responsive HTML5 output is now faster and better

Additional publishing enhancements (FM Only)

== FrameMaker 12 can now publish the content in the reference pages as well
for all non-PDF outputs.
== The non-PDF publishing for large files with many images is now faster
with 50% reduction in publishing time.

Integration with other Adobe products would work without TCS license

Structure View Enhancements

Table Enhancements

CMS Connector Enhancements

We have fixed more than 25 bugs as well!

* Cross Reference dialog is resize-able
* If a user is currently at a specific location in a document, the corresponding

o Paragraph
o Character
o Table
o Object style
Kudos to the development team!

FrameMaker 12 Package function doesn't really work

2014-08-14 Thread Yves Barbion
Hi group

I've got an Fm file with graphics imported by reference. The Fm file is in
folder A and the graphics are in folder B, C and D.

When I try to create a package, I get a message saying that I opted not to
create [a] package if dependent file(s) are missing and that files will
not be copied as they exist outside [the] containing folder of the document
to be packaged.

No I did not opt this and I thought that was the whole idea of creating a
package: to collect all the linked graphics into a single folder (or
subfolders), as the Archive plugin or the Archive ExtendScript did.

So, when I click Continue after seeing the above messages, a ZIP file is
created but it only contains my Fm file, no graphics.

Cheers

Ps. Word Mongers - hmm, nice name. I've been called a Word Carver. I hope it
was a compliment!

I thought I'd invented the term 'wordmonger' (in 1995, during a bout of
more than usually furious concentration), as in 'one who sells words',
but years later I discovered that the word already existed, and meant 'a
writer who uses words for show or without particular regard for
meaning'.

Sigh. Such is life.

RE: FrameMaker 12 Cloud

2014-05-20 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Rick,

You may want to be aware of a current product launch promotion that is about to
expire. Through May 30th, (10 days left) you can subscribe to ALL of Tech Comm
Suite 5 (FrameMaker, RoboHelp, Captivate, Acrobat and Presenter), for the same
price of $29.99. That is one dollar per day for 5 products (yes, with a
one-year commitment).

This is a one-time promotion related to first 6 months of product launch and
this comes to an end 11:59 PM May 30th, Pacific Time. There is an information
link to the 40% off promo on the home page of FrameMaker and Tech Comm Suite.

FYI -- after the one year, you can downgrade from Tech Comm Suite to only
FrameMaker and continue the subscription for only $29.99 per month. Again, $1
per day.

Incidentally, if a major release comes out (e.g. FrameMaker 13) during your
subscription, you are automatically upgraded at no extra cost.

If you would like regular updates on such promotions, follow us on Twitter at

enough bad will with all of the subscription stuff and high upgrade prices.
Why the one-year commitment? Is it that costly to turn the subscription on

With all respect to Maxwell, special offers do not answer Rick's point. Adobe

Hi Steve,

Yes, you are right, I didn't answer Rick's question. I have no answer, other
than that Lynda.com provides training which wouldn't be used weekly in
production as FrameMaker usually is.

I do however feel that everyone should be aware that they only have 10 days
left to get 5 products for $1 per day. That is a pretty big deal, and it ends
forever on May 30th.

I will now exit this discussion. I do appreciate your feedback.

I assume, and maybe Max can enlighten us further, that any updates (or

Re: FrameMaker 12 Cloud

2014-05-20 Thread Ted Steinberg
Right on, about automatic upgrades. They should be optional.

Here's the gotcha! Should be plural, not singular:

   1. Adobe suffers from the inability to cohesively deal with post sale
help issues within a product by version, or by PDF's, on-line, forums,
including **in-person tech support*. Adobe suffers? So do we!
   2. Adobe displays an endemic nonchalance to providing focused answers to
questions without misdirecting the issue to other releases, some being
several years old with different interfaces.
   3. Additionally, while seeking a legitimate answer to one thing or the
other, it's not helpful to be smacked in the face with salubrious
advertising, especially, a) if it's redundant to a current subscription.
(How many times to I need to subscribe to the same products in the same
suite?), or b) it's for any other product which Adobe's
   kaleidoscopic visionaries are favoring.

**Case in point:*

   1. to my pleasant surprise, twice, last week, I receive a call from
Frame Tech Support in New Delhi regarding Frame 12's 2nd patch creating a
shrunken pear shape when installed in Windows 8.1.
   2. I was informed that my issue was not the first. (Cool, I'm not the
   only thorn among roses.)
   3. Here's the rub! The tech, via Adobe Connect, was operating in Windows
7 Pro, a fact not provided me until the end of call number two.
  1. He could see that Frame 12 and the 1st patch were not corrupted.
  2. He could see the mess caused by the 2nd patch.
  3. So he tweaked my registry, whereupon, I began to suspect he was
not using or familiar with Windows 8.1. His pointer was from the wrong
  kennel.
  4. He admitted failure and decided to escalate the issue and assured
me I would hear from Adobe a/o yesterday. (Monday, the 19th.
Tuesday in New
Delhi, giving the escalator repairman an extra day to de-kink it.)
  5. Meanwhile, the computer was now acting odd. So, on Sunday, I did a
complete repair within 8.1 (Several hours were dedicated
to repairing Adobe's well meaning but ill prepared support.)
  6. FYI, I have received no contact from Adobe via email, telephone,
  or carrier pigeon.

Today, I am running Frame 12 without any patches. It works fine. Who knows
what I'm missing from the subsequent patches? Bad joke intended!

Thanks, Steve, for getting on Maxwell for his well intended, though myopic,
marketing pitch which sounded like: hurry up. All aboard. Train's leaving!

When I take the A Train, I expect to get where I'm going. My apologies to
Duke Ellington.

Ted

Ps. Word Mongers - hmm, nice name. I've been called a Word Carver. I hope
it was a compliment!

FrameMaker 12 publish feature

2014-03-12 Thread Studio Smalbro
I have just bought and installed FrameMaker 12 and have been playing
around with the publish feature.
I would like to publish some manuals to epub, but I just can't seem to
make it work properly. When I publish to epub:

- all embedded pictures disappear
- czech characters disappear
- tables and the text and pictures in them disappear

There doesn't seem to be any way to handle font settings or character
map settings in the settings dialogue.

Publish to other formats like html etc is only marginally better. Am I
missing something here? The publish features seem rather unfinished to me...

Update for FrameMaker 12

2014-02-11 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

There is already an update for FrameMaker 12 which fixes
some bugs:

1. Generating a list or an index of references (imported graphics) results in a
blank file.
(Ref#: 3703081)
2. The Search and Replace feature causes any replaced text to be formatted in
Times New
Roman with size as 12pt Default. This is irrespective of font and font-size of
the
replaced text.
(Ref#: 3703070)
3. Accessing WebHelp locally (not accessing the help via a Web Server) from
Chrome on
Mac does not show TOC search.
(Ref#: 3703173)
4. When a Glossary / Glossaryterm is not present in the first .fm file of a
book, the Glossary
popup feature does not work for any of the .fm files in the book.
(Ref#: 3703172)
5. When a window-intensive application like the Lotus Notes is open, then
FrameMaker
takes long time to open Publish pod or the workspace containing Publish pod.
(Ref#: 3703168)
6. FrameMaker crashes on printing a book in unstructured mode.
(Ref#: 3703064)

Best regards

Winfried

Re: RECORDING of What's new in FrameMaker 12 webinar from Jan 28 with time chart

2014-02-03 Thread David Downing
This might be helpful to me, since I'm trying to learn my way around FM.

 that interest you the most.

Here is the link to the recording: http://adobe.ly/1ibB3Ku

(use your Adobe.com account credentials to log-in ... once you have you
won't need to log-in again as long as browser instance is running.) If you
are using Chrome, I recommend that you clear your cache and restart Chrome
 before viewing.

Here are some key time stop points that will take you to major
 highlights of the presentation:

 * 1 hour 10 min = How to publish from FM12 to EPUB, HTML5
 RESPONSIVE LAYOUT and more

(in answer to many questions, this is FrameMaker 12 by itself, with no
plug-ins, and no assistance from RoboHelp 11 or Tech Comm Suite 5!)

 * 1 hour 36 min = Structure and FrameMaker XML Author 12

 * 1 hour 50 min = MathML equations, including XML code view to
 edit

 * 1 hour 53 min = improved XML white space handling

 * 1 hour 57 min = Preview DITAMAP topic content

 * 12 min = user interface enhancements

 * 25 minutes = Regular Expressions used in Find/Change

 (e.g. reverse date format)

 * 28 min 44 sec = Generate QR code

 * 30 min 28 sec = background color on text level and
 boxed/colored paragraphs

 * 32 min 30 sec = improved Conditional Text control, new UI
 and complex expressions

 * 38 min 44 sec = enhanced Smart Catalogs with search/filter
 to narrow choices

 * 46 min = improved collaborative workflow with Dropbox
 integration and improved PDF review

Many people emailed me after the webinar asking about our 40% discount
offer. For a limited time, all existing customers of Adobe Technical
Communication Suite, Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe RoboHelp are eligible to
take advantage of this limited period promotional offer to purchase
subscription licenses of Adobe Technical Communication Suite 5 at 40% off
for an entire year. This would allow you to subscribe to the entire Tech
Comm Suite 5 (FrameMaker 12, RoboHelp 11, Captivate 7, Acrobat Pro XI and

Thanks! Does anyone know of a CIAB for FM12? I could have sworn I saw a
download on amazon.com and then - poof! It was gone. The Getting Started Guide
on the Adobe site won't open and doesn't appear to have the depth of training
the CIAB series does. Could I simply order the FM 11 CIAB and get 90% of the
basic FM 12 functionality? Your thoughts? TIA for your help.

Re: Now OT, I suppose. RE: Adobe pricing policies (was: FrameMaker 12 released)

2014-01-29 Thread Robert Lauriston
I don't buy that at all. DITA has major costs that are not offset
unless you have substantial opportunities for reuse and publish in
multiple languages.

There's no rational reason to spend money on low-value upgrades. Do a
cost-benefit analysis and know what you're paying for. At one old job
we were using FM6. We looked at 7.0, 7.1, and 7.2, nobody thought they
were worth the cost.

FrameMaker's major competition is Flare, which does a pretty good job
of importing FM files.

Re: FREE TC CAMP Sat 25 Jan workshop Santa Clara, CA; world premiere live demo FrameMaker 12

2014-01-27 Thread Liz Fraley
Last CalL! TC Camp is TOMORROW at Mission College in Santa Clara, CA.

TC Camp Exclusive: See Adobe's TCS5 in person and maybe win a subscription!

TC Camp, the unconference for content creators, consumers, and the people
who support them, is happening at Mission College in Santa Clara on
Saturday 25 January 2014.

I don't know if you've been to an unconference before, but they are very
different from regular conferences. They are not juried. Sessions aren't
presenter-decided topics. It's much more fluid and much more audience
decided. All session topics are decided by the attendees on the day of the
event. Everyone nominates topics; we vote on them together; and then, those
sessions with enough votes get scheduled into the agenda. You can guarantee
there is always a session happening that you're interested in.

Unconferences are all hallway - like the hallway conversations you have
between session at regular conferences. At an Unconference, you get the
chance to work with other people to really wrap your arms around a topic
and figure it out as it applies directly to you.

The main unconference (afternoon) is Free. We have an expert panel to kick
things off which Scott Abel is moderating.

If you're interested, there are morning workshops that cost a modest $30.
The workshops happen in the morning before the main unconference starts.

There are 6 morning workshops to choose from that will help get the
creative juices flowing:

* Structured Authoring - lessons learned from the pioneers. Tracy Baker
(F5), Wendy Shaffer and Amy Bowman (VMWare) will be giving advice for
people learning DITA. All three of them were early DITA adopters and
learned by fire. They are passing on their lessons learned so you can
benefit from their experience.

* Analytics - learn how to apply and interpret analytics to improve your
content. You have a chance to hear from analytics folks (marketing folks)
about some of the secrets of SEO and using analytics, it's a great
opportunity.

* Content Strategy - Strategy from the outside (your customer's side). Pam
Noreault (ACI Worldwide) and Chip Gettinger (SDL) are presenting about
thinking strategically about xml publishing projects. It's lessons learned,
but from a manager's perspective. Pam's done it twice, and the second time
she decided to rearchitect content from the Customer's Perspective. This is
absolutely going to be a great session.

* Responsive Design - learn how to improve your authoring so your content
looks good anywhere. Mike Hamilton, from MadCap Software, will explain and
show techniques for authoring and delivering of content that responds to
the user needs whether they be handheld, mobile, or full screen PC so that
it not only works from a responsive design standpoint, but increases
usability and customer satisfaction.

* Content Quality - improve authoring and publishing efficiency and the
experience of your users. Doug Gorman from SimplyXML is talking about how
to improve authoring efficiency, publishing efficiency, re-usability, and
the experience of your information consumers. His workshop is doctype and
tool-independent because these lessons apply universally.

* Adobe - all about TCS5! This will be the first public showing of TCS5!
Max Hoffmann will be here to give the world premiere demo of the product
that was released on Tuesday this week

It's an amazing experience - energetic, dynamic, and all about the
attendees learning from each other.

If you want to see what someone from the SF STC had to say about last year,
he wrote up a review here for their December Newsletter:

I hope that we'll see you there!

For any list members in the SF Bay Area, you have an opportunity to see
the first live public demo of FrameMaker 12 this Saturday, Jan 25 at 8:45
AM, in a TC Camp workshop I’m giving at Mission College, Santa Clara.

The free workshop is courtesy of Adobe’s sponsorship of TC Camp. Other
portions of the TC Camp later in the day require a modest fee; I attended
last year and can highly recommend it. I hope to see some of you early
Saturday morning when I will be sharing new features in Tech Comm Suite 5,
FrameMaker 12, FrameMaker XML Author 12 and RoboHelp 11.
