RE: Acrobat 9 Frustrations...
Hi all, and thanks for the help so far... Yes, I found that it's the need of a patch that has caused my Acrobat problems. Yes, I was completely blind, and failed to see the link to the patches... If it was a snake it would have bit me -- I can never find the mustard in the refrigerator, either. I currently have FrameMaker, build 8.0p236. When I try to patch, the installer says I must have 8b236. Note the change from P to B... You do not have the correct version of FM install (sic) on your system. This patch installer will work with only VERSION 8b236 build. Patch Installer will quit now. OK Given the language in that message, I'm not convinced that the b is intentional. Nonetheless, I have 8p236 installed, and I have no other patches installed. Here's what the Adobe patch download page says: This download updates the English, French, and German language versions of Adobe® FrameMaker® 8p236 software (released in July 2007) to version 8p266. This patch will be available to customers who have the 8p236 build on their machine via Adobe Update Manager (AUM). What I have is 8.0p236, installed from an upgrade disk... I bought an upgrade from 7.x to 8. So I did not get my p236 via the AUM. I installed it from a disk. But now I can't install the patches. Am I going crazy, or what? Am I just so unused to installing software that I can't remember how to do it any more? Or maybe there's something about Windows 7 that's keeping me from doing this? Has anybody else successfully installed an upgrade version of Maker 8 onto a new Windows 7 machine, and then applied the patches? Thanks for hanging in there with me... cud ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Send list messages to fram...@lists.frameusers.com. Re: Acrobat 9 Frustrations...
Chris, Grasping at straws here, but I seem to recall in FM8 that there was a patch issued that had a major flaw and so Adobe issued a replacement for it within a day or so, but kept the same patch number. Perhaps that is why you are seeing the 8b236 designation instead of 8p236. Maybe you have the flawed one installed and need to download the newer 236 version and reapply it (perhaps after uninstalling the existing patch?). RE: Acrobat 9 Frustrations...
D'oh!! I read that backwards. You need to update *FrameMaker* 8 and not Acrobat 8! It's the same kind of story, but without so many chapters... Choose FrameMaker - Windows on the Product updates page, and then from the list you'll need to successively download and install: - Adobe FrameMaker 8p266 update for Windows - English, French, and German (aka Version 8.0.1) - Adobe FrameMaker 8p273 update for Windows - English, French, and German (aka Version 8.0.2) - Adobe FrameMaker 8p277 update for Windows - English, French, German, and Japanese (aka Version 8.0.4) Sorry for the confusion... -Fred Ridder From: docu...@hotmail.com To: despopoulos_chr...@yahoo.com; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Acrobat 9 Frustrations... RE: Acrobat 9 Frustrations...
Hi Dov... Thanks for answering. I was able to generate PDF with the same combination of Maker 8 and Acrobat 9 for the same files on my XP machine. That's what led me to think about Win 7. I also never had any PDF generation problems with earlier versions of Acrobat, but with Acrobat 9 I've seen bizarre issues... The hoops I had to jump through to get TCS Acrobat working on my other machine were shocking. So I also suspected that Acrobat 9 contributed to the problem. If what you say is true and final, then the answer is I should use my new machine as a door stop, pay to replace the burned out monitor on my old machine (and get a new battery and power supply), and use that for another 7 years. I have to use Maker 8 and Acrobat 9 because that's what my customers use. (And they can successfully generate PDF with the same templates.) Note that they are still on XP, I might add. I have a version of Maker 7.2 laying around. I could write a plugin that traps Save As PDF, saves the book as Maker 7 files, starts Maker 7, and saves as PDF. Or I could run my old machine as a server, and use it to generate PDFs... But then I have to pay for a FrameMaker Server license, right? Sigh... I'm venting, I'm afraid. This really is a show stopper, after many thousands of dollars invested in a new machine, and setting that machine up to work in the various environments I need. I know there's some sort of cause for this, which means there's some sort of workaround. Darned if I can find it, though. cud ** Whatever problem you are experiencing has nothing to do with Windows 7 or Acrobat 9, but probably relates to problems with FrameMaker 8. For the record, the hotfix is for Windows XP and Vista only. Windows 7 already is fixed for the issues for which the hotfix applied. Furthermore, the issue was NOT the PostScript driver, but rather, the internal GDI graphics subsystem in Windows that had some problems associated with font handling and caching. Unfortunately, I do not know exactly what the problem was with FrameMaker 8, but there were any number of issues associated with printing and PDF production from FrameMaker 8. - Dov *** ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com.
