Thanks to Richard Combs, Steve Johnson and Rick Quattro for helpful insights. We're all in agreement that the version-specific naming structure within each book project is not a good thing -- I'm going to try to get our department to go back to the old way we did it before someone (not I!) got the bright idea to change it. If you rename a file, cross-references to that file will break. IMHO, you shouldn't put the version number in a file name. There is no reason to do that. The best alternative is to put the new files, with the same names, in a new directory and be happy. Otherwise you'll have to fix the cross-references.
