RE: Does a FrameMaker Reader/Viewer exist?

2013-03-08 Thread Anderson, Ben
Hi Christin,

There used to be a product called FrameViewer that functioned much like Adobe
Reader, but for Frame files (obviously).

It was a LONG time ago when I used it (Frame v. 2 or 3). Not sure if it, or a
comparable product is still available. You might contact Adobe and see.

I believe Alan is correct about FM 5.5.6, and I'm pretty sure FrameViewer was
discontinued before FM 6 came out.

The "comparable product" ever since has been Acrobat/Adobe Reader. You can
easily create a PDF of any FM document, complete with working links, and anyone
can view it with the free Reader. So FrameViewer didn't seem to serve any
useful purpose.

On behalf of Adobe ...

There hasn't been a FrameViewer product for many years, dating back to the era
of FrameMaker 5.5.6 or so. And Richard is correct. PDF became Adobe's final
form file format for viewing content from any Adobe application via our free
Adobe Reader.

Christin,

No need for it. Just save or print the Frame file as a pdf and others can read
it with Adobe reader.

There was an application called FrameViewer but it was discontinued long ago.

If you have FrameMaker source and don't have a copy of FrameMaker, you
can install a free trial version.

It does now. I can't open any of my 14 years worth of FM docs on the Macs I
spend most of my time on nowadays. Something like FrameViewer would be very
useful, just to remind myself of the content of the docs. Not that I have the
slightest expectation of Adobe ever considering such a product.

2013-03-10 Thread B2Streamlines/Bill & Bunny Kuhlman

Graeme,

We're running FrameMaker 7 Mac on a MacBook Pro 17 using SheepShaver.
Works very well.

There is a very active Yahoo! group "wordperfectmac" which offers
SheepShaver install packages and information on more elaborate
install packages with WordPerfect included. It's not at all hard to
add the FrameMaker 7 app to that environment. Not an exceptional
solution, but a viable work-around.

Hope that helps.

What files are you trying to open on Windows. The Resource Fork or the
Data Fork?

It is possible that the two parts of the Mac file have become separated
on Windows and you are trying to open the file that contains no data.

Oh right, yes. :}

I read "14 years worth of FM docs on the Macs" and skipped over "spend

I think you may be misinterpreting Graeme's situation, Alan.
I think what he is saying is that he has 14 years worth of Windows (and
maybe even UNIX) FrameMaker files that he'd like to be able to look at
from his current Mac environment. Because FrameViewer is long gone, and
FrameMaker stopped supporting Mac as of v7.0, he really has no
convenient (or affordable, considering the current price of
FrameMaker...) way to do that.
