Correct, I tried that and it works.

RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-15 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

Now I work with FrameMaker for more than 20 years,
but I had never encountered this issue.
I will not add IDs to the graphics files. At least in my (rare) cases
they would not have helped.
With IDs translation or updating to a new doc. release
would be much more work.
Instead I will take extra care when I move files.
Thanks for the help.

Best regards

Winfried

Hi Winfried,

yes, FrameMaker searches for missing graphics in the last successfully opened
graphics folder (of the actual session at least). So, if you have just opened a
first file, all missing graphics for the second file will be replaced with
graphics for the first file if they have the same names, without checking if
they are identical.

This can be very annoying and therefore I recommend to use unique IDs for
graphics (including version/revision) instead of or in addition to simple names.

RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-15 Thread Heiko Haida

Hi Harro,

this is a bug and I think it has been discussed here already.

The link information will be truncated in the mif (not in the FM file
itself) to the max possilble no. of folders available in the folder
hierarchy at the level where the mif file is actually stored to (not
where the FM file is stored) !

In your case, you need 2 more hierarchical folder levels.

RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-15 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

I think this is a bug!
Steps:
Copy a file with a referenced graphics into another folder. The graphics path
might be .\graphics\test.eps
Open the first file.
Then open the copied file. It will show the referenced graphics although it
should complaint that the graphics file could not be found in .\graphics.
Obviously FrameMaker calculates for the copied file the graphics path to the
graphics file the first file.

Best regards

That part of detecting the absolute file location is easy. After a program
accessing a file (through all the relative references), determining the
absolute location of a file is trivial in code.

The truncation mentioned by Harro is troublesome though.

Also, there is a path length limit in Windows - I thought it was 256

file name issue mentioned ...

hi all,

I recently ran into an issue: we received a set of FrameMaker files for
translation. After we sent the translated files back to the customer, they
complained that all of the image paths in their files were changed.
They were using relative paths that had lots of 'parent' references:
..\..\..\..\..\..\Graphics\etc

When I received these files, I placed them in a directory 4 levels deep:

F:\Customer\project\translation\incoming\blah.fm

When I opened this file Frame asked for the location of external graphics. I
selected 'Ignore all missing files' and saved the file as MIF.
When I inspected the MIF, the graphics paths were truncated to
..\..\..\..\Graphics\etc

So the path gets truncated to the number of levels available from the current
location.

When I store the file on an UNC path, it gets worse:
\\Server\Customer\project\translation\incoming\blah.fm
graphics paths:
\\Graphics\etc

In my opinion, this is a bug. When I select 'Ignore all missing files', Frame
should leave the existing paths alone.

Has anyone else seen the same behavior?

Re: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-14 Thread Robert Lauriston
I suspect what's happening here is that FM won't accept the relative
path because it does not exist. If you put the file in
F:\Customer\project\translation\incoming\x\x\x\x it would probably
preserve it.

RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-14 Thread Craig, Alison
I have only ever had this problem upon receiving files back from a Language
Service Provider (LSP) - and it has always been the result of a path change
made by the LSP.

Every doc I publish is moved from my working folders (tied to Visual Source
Safe) to a "finished" directory for final compilation and so long as I keep the
relative paths the same (at least up to the highest folder in which any
required publication files reside) then I never have a problem with relative
paths and my "imported by reference" graphics are fine.

The advice I received from the List to fix the problem (back in 2011) is as
follows. It’s worked every time I’ve encountered this issue.

“Just in case that the path info has been changed, say from relative paths to
absolute paths…you can still change them back, in a dirty, quick way. First,
you need to save all FM files into MIF. Then you can use a search-and-replace
tool that supports wildcards/regular expressions, such as the legendary
UltraEditor – just replace the “c:\folder\subfolders\” stuff with “..\..\” – of
course the strings look differently in the MIF, but this is a just a quick
example. And finally, you resave all MIF’s back to FM’s.”

Hope this help,

Alison

RE: FM 10 sometimes changes graphics paths

2015-01-14 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi Harro,

I observe this issue very rarely.
I do the same as you:
I copy a file with my file manager, open it,
click Ignore all missing files and then notice that the graphics
path has changed.
The path changes to the path of the original graphics files.

This happens so rarely that I do not take care.
I use FrameMaker 11.0.2.384.
I do not known whether this bug is fixed in FrameMaker 12.

However, I do not know how FrameMaker gets the path
to the orginal graphics files.
Does this happen only, if another file is open which points to
the graphics files of the copied file?
Otherwise I wonder how FrameMaker can find out where the
graphics files are located.

Best regards

Winfried
