Re: Feature Request - Print to File Warning

2013-05-29 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
It's much faster to print straight from FM then to make a PDF every time
I want to print a page or two. Before I finish the doc, I change the
printer to PDF, review the pagination and update the book.

I could try the Save as PDF option.

If you're creating PDFs, print the PDFs, not the FM files. I recommend

annoying indeed if I forgot to clear the print to file.

I personal request for the Adobe FrameMaker development team:

When I print to file (which I do when I make a PDF) then I later change
to a different printer to print out a hard copy, the preference of Print
to File remains unless I clear the checkbox. This is very annoying. I
end up printing things to the office printer and walking to the printer
only then to realize that I forgot to clear the Print to File checkbox.

Since the majority of the time people are not printing to a file
(especially when they are changing the printer often), could you please
add a warning that Print to File is selected when someone changes the
printer?

When Print to File is not selected and the printer is changed, I don't
think it is not necessary to have a warning that Print to File is not
selected, and I think it would be rather annoying. So please do not add
a warning in this case.

Thanks!

I had not considered this one (though, I don't think I encountered that). Also,
I guess I usually do print from my PDFs and recently switched over to doing a
save as PDF anyways. It occurs to me that I was seconding the idea based on
memory of how it used to be for me. :-)

Yep, I do save specific job option files.

I think I was focusing (in error) on the SaveAs PDF option rather than the

You do create and save .joboptions files for the specific Distiller job

The last time I saw any formatting actually change when changing printers was
10 years ago, and that was when switching to a non-Postscript printer and an
unusual font. Thankfully, FrameMaker is much better about this than, say, Word.

Still, it bothers me that this is still an issue. Printer-based fonts should
have died with the introduction of Ethernet. Why are we still saddled with this
kludge? There's only one factor that should decide the layout of my document,
and that's the application in which the document resides.

In FM9, when I select a printer that's not 'Adobe PDF' and I try to 'Save as
PDF', I get this message:

When you create a PostScript file you must rely on system fonts and use
document fonts.
Please go to the printer properties, Adobe PDF Settings page and turn OFF
the option Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts.

I can't set this in the printer properties, so Save as PDF fails unless I
select the Adobe PDF printer first.

Also, if you have multiple page sizes in the file, you have to print to file
(*.ps), then distill.

Admittedly, I am on FM 9, so if this has gone away in FM 11, I'd love to hear
about it.
