2010-03-30 Thread Roger Shuttleworth
Hi Jack

Nice to know I'm not the only one. I agree with you in suspecting it may be
related to memory, though little do I know about such things.

I've been watching FM memory use in the Task Manager.

Beginning of day, one doc open: FrameMaker.exe is using 14K.
End of day, same doc open (after about 6 hours): it's using 407000K - not good
on a 1GB machine.

I wonder if that qualifies as a memory leak?

Hi Roger,

If you decide to investigate, you might consider taking a look at any
plugins you have installed. A single line of missing code from a
third-party developer can cause memory to hemorrhage. Lord knows I've
been guilty and still am occasionally.

Disregarding a leak, since there isn't a lot you can do about it but note
that one exists, I'd look at getting more RAM.
If you only have 1 G on board, you should have several open slots, and RAM
is cheap right now. Easiest way to boost performance would be to go to at
least 2, and probably 4G.

RE: Garbage characters in FM9

2010-03-29 Thread Alison Craig

I haven't touched the maker.ini in months and I noticed recently that some of
my files insist that the fonts Times New Roman and Adobe Minion Pro exist
within the book files - which is ridiculous as I only EVER use 3 fonts (Arial,
Courier New and Symbol).

I hope I haven't got garbage in places that I've never noticed. I'll
have to do some very careful checking. Thanks for the heads up. (This is where
human proofreading would come in handy but it feels like nobody but me ever
seems to read what I write :- at least not within the company.)

Mike,

Is the problem limited to Minion Pro font? By any chance, have you edited your
maker.ini file lately and if so, did you open it in anything other than
Notepad? I learned through frustrating experience that editing maker.ini in
say, WordPad, can cause garbage characters to start appearing in place of
certain letters.

Weird! It sounds a bit like the behavior of some of the practical joke
programs that tend to show up around April Fool's Day. Users secretly
install them on co-workers' computers to make them behave in mysterious
ways. The user normally fesess up to the joke after a few minutes of fun,
and the program is uninstalled. One of the PC magazines (I forget which) ran
an article within the last month that encouraged even more malicious
behavior. They didn't just tell how to install a joke program in the Startup
folder. They had examples that included turning off screen icons and
replacing the wallpaper with a screen capture that mimics the desktop before
turning off the icons. So icons would not work. And there were worse
examples that would require an extremely knowledgeable techie to uncover. I
wish I could remember which magazine, so that I could say shame on them
specifically.
