RE: Spam from India?

2006-01-27 Thread Joe Malin
My attitude about spam is that it's a fair price (on the whole) to pay
for a relatively low-cost, open, and liberal communication resource. I
use my delete key often; it helps exercise my hand!

I recognize, though, that this might not be an option for everyone,
because
* not everyone has high bandwidth access, so spam costs them significant
extra time and money
* not everyone has relatively unlimited storage space
* not everyone has an ISP/workplace that understands or accepts that one
should not blame the recipient.
* some people use ISP/e-mail providers whose approach to spam is to kill
the fly with an atom bomb, thus
  destroying innocent messages.

I don't believe that we have a useful way of preventing spam. I have
received virus-laden spam in e-mail messages tagged with my own personal
domain! I notified my domain hoster. Beyond that, I don't take
responsibility, and I don't worry.

Someone needs to teach the moderator the basics of e-mail, IMHO.

I belong to the TWI (Technical Writers of India) group. Recently the
moderator deplored that some spam came from the members, only to get
reports from the members that their names and email addresses were used
unkown to them for spamming.

Re: Spam from India?

2006-01-25 Thread Peter Gold
I just got one of these addressed to a long-gone former employee
whose mail is routed to me. This person never posted to this list.

This makes it seem that perhaps the mail is being sent to addressees
culled from multiple sources, such as company directories, Web sites,
vendor listings, and perhaps even from results of search-engine
searches.

That's an unrealistic attitude, John.
I think not, I have been on literally 20+ lists since about 1987 and
this is now the THIRD Spam message ever I have gotten from a mailing
list. In each of those other cases, the member was disciplined or
removed. If not, it just spirals out of control.

Also, every other list (including about a dozen Yahoo Groups that I run)
munges the email addresses when posted for web consumption.

If this is not the case with this list, I am gone.

Yep, I've already gotten about 10 messages and it's about 50/50. I
personally view this as pure spam and I would think this guy should be
barred from the list. This is at best really annoying and I would
actually say it's unethical. I spend a lot of time working to avoid
spam and if this list will allow anyone to harvest my email to send me
an unsolicited message to outsource work to India, I'm going to have to
(unfortunately) drop it.

RE: Spam from India?

2006-01-25 Thread Bernard Aschwanden
Hi John,

Hopefully the bulk of people respond directly to you and maybe you can let Lisa
(and the list?) know the results... Just to avoid a flood of email as I'm sure
that you're not the only one.

I did get that same email so let's hope that we can track it. In their defense,
the content is pretty FM specific and they may not have bothered to look up the
'rules' of posting/harvesting. Maybe it would have been better for them to just
post to the list once though instead of emailing a collection of addresses.

Bernard

Did anyone else get this Framemaker Spam? Did he harvest the names from this
