Robert,

Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. I will ensure
that this is sent to the appropriate internal parties.

Regarding my intent in "it's impossible to please everyone," what I was
referring to is that various feature requests and UI enhancements requested in
this formats sometimes cancel each other out. Obviously, we can't please
everyone.

It's impossible to displease anyone by fixing bugs, or by improving your QA.

There are a lot of serious UI bugs that were introduced in FM9 that from what
I've heard still haven't been fixed in FM11. You may remember you asked me to
send you a list of those bugs last year.
Here's another copy.

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

[snip]

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing Alt-Tab again
takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more than one document is
open) instead of back to the other application.

I eventually gave up on rearranging FM10's windows and pods, which means I
don't encounter most of those any more, but I'm probably 10-15% slower as a
result.

There are a lot of serious UI bugs that were introduced in FM9 that
from what I've heard still haven't been fixed in FM11. You may
remember you asked me to send you a list of those bugs last year.
Here's another copy.

1. Document window size and position are not saved.

2. Docked panels often appear behind the document window, and I have
to resize, minimize, or close the document window to use them. Since
window size and position are not saved, I have to resize them dozens
of times a day.

3. Sometimes I have the opposite problem: the side of a window is
completely blocked by the character or paragraph tag catalog, so I
have to minimize, close, or move the panel before I can resize the
window.

4. When I open a panel, sometimes it appears behind another panel
that's already open, and I have to move one or the other before I can
use it.

5. The first time I press Ctrl-f, I can just type the search string,
but after that the focus within the Find/Change seems to be random, so
I can't.

6. After a book has been open for a while, it no longer responds to
menu commands. I can double-click files to open them or use the
right-click menu, but if I try to select a menu command such as Edit >
Update Book or File > Save As PDF the book window minimizes and is no
longer active. The only workaround I've found is to close and reopen
the book window, which I end up doing dozens of times a day.

7. A separate FrameMaker button appears on the taskbar for each file
that's open.

8. The FrameMaker console window appears behind the application
window. Bringing it to the front is sometimes difficult.

9. When I first start FrameMaker, Ctrl-F6 switches between open
windows. After a while, it stops working. (I can use alt-key menu
navigation.)

10. Alt-key menu letters are not displayed for all menu commands (e.g.
Documents on the Window menu).

11. If I Alt-Tab to FrameMaker from another application, pressing
Alt-Tab again takes me to another FrameMaker document window (if more
than one document is open) instead of back to the other application.

I eventually gave up on rearranging FM10's windows and pods, which
means I don't encounter most of those any more, but I'm probably
10-15% slower as a result.

Only if you have enough "points" to do so - as evidenced by the recent thread I
wrote about, they are _not_ going to give me a renewal on my last 2 year Update
Plan, since it is only for 1 license.

All small number of users (individual and business) are thus shut out with
overpricing - I think Adobe's ultimate goal is to get them to switch to some
other tool.

I think Adobe's ultimate goal is to get everyone on a subscription plan.

I bought TCS4 with a 2-year maintenance plan to cover upgrades, but found
out that it did not cover new features released to subscription or ASA
plans.
There were features I needed for Captivate, so I bought a TCS4 subscription
for $69 per month. (My other software was moved to secondary computers, so
it didn't go to waste.)

I have to agree. The complaints about the Stalinesque GUI and the
unworkable pod scheme began immediately on the release of FM 9, and have
been totally ignored in two subsequent releases. It seems sadly clear
that Adobe's claim of listening to FM's end-users is lip service only.

the UI far too much, far too miserably already. ...

After all, is not the point of FrameMaker, in significant part, to

We need our shortcuts back. ALL of them. We need WHATEVER UI you send
our way to work … first time, every time, no matter what. If your
developers don’t know how to manage pods, then get rid of them and
create something simple … that works. (These are obviously just two
examples, not a working list.)

It pains me deeply to have to admit that since "upgrading" to FM 9 and
10 (via TC$), my productivity has dropped significantly. No, it's still
not as bad as "digging to China" in Word's 9-level deep dialogs, but too
many steps have been taken in that direction. (Another example: it used
to be enough to change a graphic's dpi by clicking "Set" in the Graphics
Scaling dialog box. Now we also have to remember to find our way back
to the Object Properties pod and either click "Apply" or press tab
enough times to focus on that button and then press Enter. Slow,
cumbersome, retrograde "improvement.")

So …

Elchanan,

I agree that the certain features, especially the pods feature, are not
worth the bugs. But the red underline feature makes me enjoy working
with it much more. I don't like to have worry about typos and
remembering to do spell checks.

I also agree that Abobe should supply a quality, bug-free product, since
it is quite expensive. If there is a bug, like the zoom level, Adobe
should fix the bugs in a free patch, not in a paid upgrade. I consider
the zoom level bug a major bug. I'm surprised they released it, and I'm
surprised they have not yet released a patch.

RE: Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-02-21 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

This works also in other applications like Acrobat, Word or Excel.

I agree that it's very convenient to be able to set the default zoom
levels. I will miss this when I will switch to FM 11. (I am on FM 10 now.)
In my oppinion many of the options in the ini files should be available
in dialogs.

However, most applications do not offer the option to set default
zoom levels. Therefore FrameMaker is ahead of other applications
even if this is now hidden in an ini file.

Best regards

Winfried

fwiw, I've gotten used to using the Ctrl-Scroll Wheel to change my zoom
settings. Pushing the scroll wheel away (up) makes things smaller, while
dragging toward me (down) increases the magnification.

RE: Zoom Level Settings in FM 11

2013-02-21 Thread Craig Ede

While this may not meet your needs, you can affect all (or just the selected)
files in a book by choosing View > Zoom and choosing In, Out, 100%, Fit Page in
Window (plus a couple of others). I find this useful since my monitor happens
to fit the page to a full size window at 84%. The fact that this affects
multiple files more than makes up, to me, for the loss of the ability to
designate exactly which size to zoom to. If I need some particularly gargantuan
size factor for a given file, I just type it into that percentage box you
complain about.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but I just noticed that I cannot set
custom zoom levels in FM 11. Why was the functionality of the old dialog box
(or whatever it was called) removed? And no, I don't mean typing into the
percentage/drop-down box--you know, the one that doesn't even look like an
entry field until it is rolled over or clicked in. If I had to type the size
every time I needed to change zoom level, I'd have the slowest workflow on the
planet.

Seriously, are users expected to modify an .ini file just to set zoom-level

Works in FM9 as well! But it scrolls up and down using the settings I've

How does it work if you haven't/can't set those in FM 11?
