Re: type vs enter

2010-07-22 Thread Yves Barbion
From the Apple Publications Style Guide (December 2009):

enter
Use enter, not type, to describe inputting text-based information or data
(for example, in a text field or spreadsheet, or at a command-line prompt).
Such text is typically entered by typing, but it could also be copied and
pasted, or even dragged. Use type to describe simply pressing keys to
produce characters on the screen. Use press, not type, to refer to pressing
keys on the keyboard.
* Enter your account information and tap Save.
* The intelligent keyboard may suggest corrections as you type.
* Press the Return key.

John,

Type should be associated only with typewriter. A typewriter (assuming a manual
one) does not store anything. It just types on paper.

In case of computer, saying type would be obsolete because you enter data in
computer memory and a computer user is more familiar with the word enter.

1. On a computer, open a web browser.
2. In the address bar of the web browser, enter the IP address of the

Re: type vs enter

2010-07-20 Thread David Spreadbury
Clara,
The Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Publications, Version 3.0 states:

type vs. enter
Use type, not type in or enter, if information the user types appears on the
screen. An exception to this rule is that you can tell users to enter a file
name, for example, in a combo box when they have the choice of typing a name or
selecting one from a list. You can also use a combination of words such as
type or select if space is not an issue.
Correct
Type your password.
Enter the file name.
Type the path to the server or select it from the list.

Incorrect
Type in your password.
Enter your password.

using type rather than enter for this action. Here's the full quote:

Type or select: Use to refer to an item (as in a combo box) that the user

RE: type vs enter

Will your audience be able to make that leap? This one is all about
audience. If they are fairly sophisticated, then enter. If not, then type.

Hello all,

I need/would like to give the argument that it is better to say Enter the
information in the text field
vs. type the information in the text field. this is for an online
training course.

As far as I am concerned, type is archaic and no longer used when talking
about online interactive lessons. Having said that, what do you think? and
is there a valid stance I can take to make my point, or is this all personal
preference.

Re: type vs enter

2010-07-20 Thread Writer
Personally, I don't care what term is used, so long as it's used consistently.

FWIW, this is what MS MoS 3ed says about the matter:

type vs. enter
Use type, not type in or enter, if information that the user types appears on
the screen. An exception to this rule is that you can tell users to “enter” a
file name, for example, in a combo box when they have the choice of typing a
name or selecting one from a list. You can also use a combination of words such
as “type or select” if space is not an
issue.

Re: type vs enter

2010-07-20 Thread Alan T Litchfield

Makes good sense.

If it is an instruction Type [the required data] makes sense and is
reasonably unambiguous. Whereas Enter is used differently depending
on context, ranging from going into an enclosed space to form filling
and so there may be some moments of confusion as the reader decides on
the context, and then the meaning of the statement.

RE: type vs enter

2010-07-20 Thread Alison Craig

I just did a quick Internet search on Simplified Technical English and found
this example at
http://www.simplifiedenglish.net/controlled-language-global-english (at the
bottom of the web page under Industry Examples, select Software).

Step 2 (below) specifically says ...enter the IP address of the system...
which sounds to me like they want you to type it in. Step 3 is more of the same.

So enter seems to be the term of choice.

Alison

Use VXX Web to get access to the system:

1. On a computer, open a web browser.
2. In the address bar of the web browser, enter the IP address of the system,
for example, http://10.11.12.13, to go to VXX Web. If Security Mode is
enabled on the system, you must use secure HTTPS access, for example,
https://10.11.12.13. Click Yes in the security dialog boxes that show.
3. Enter admin as the user name, and enter the remote access password, if
   one is set.

RE: type vs enter and STE

2010-07-20 Thread Owen, Clint
Gillian and Richard,

You're preaching to the choir, but this type of situation comes up a lot: if
you try to strictly follow the rules, you discover that there is no easy way to
express a simple concept.

Generally, each allowed word has only one assigned meaning, and each concept
has only one allowed word to express it.

Thus TYPE can only be used as a noun name for a group of something, such as
type of lubricant or type of damage. You can't use it in any other way.

ENTER can't be used at all. You can put something somewhere, go into
someplace, record data, or make an entry, but you can't enter.

STE was developed by The European Association of Aerospace Companies and
specified by many of our customers. Mostly we follow the rules until they
become impossible, then we just get as close as we can.
