Subject: FYI: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

Just got this from a friend at Adobe (I'm trying to get some clients to
upgrade).

Cheapest route to go is the "Promo" which ends June 15th, which lets you
upgrade FM7.x to FM10 at 30% of what would have been normal cost. Before
this promo you could only have updated to entire tech comm suite. (Much more
expensive.) This 30% off upgrade ends FOREVER AND EVER AND EVER on June
15th. It will never be repeated. This is your last chance.

Promo landing page: http://adobe.ly/ItpxLt

Summary of 10-part blog series on "why upgrade": http://adobe.ly/IDoaYj

Blog with summary of 4 Captivate videos: http://adobe.ly/L7qfvg

Also, any earlier versions are now orphans. (I found a still-sealed box of
FM5+SGML in the garage this weekend, so I had to ask! )

Hi Stuart,

I found that page, but I'm still a bit suspicious because the unshortened link
doesn't say anything about a screamin' sale going on for the next week. If I
select "Buy", the version choices are FM8 and FM9 only. How does a person get

It may be legitimate, but the top-level domain ".ly" does indicate Libya. As
long as Gaddafi was in power, some people (myself included) didn't use the
bit.ly URL-shortening service for that reason.

It resolves to http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/fm-upgrade.html.
It's a legit offer, just not the best one out there.

adobe.ly appears to be an Adobe URL shortener a la bit.ly.

So what is the final pricing on it then (in case somebody actually talks to
Customer Service).

BTW:In my opinion 10 is quite good; excellent on a 64 bit OS. Some nice tools
for getting rid of overrides, etc.

The interface is quite an adjustment, but bear with it. You get used to it by
configuring things the way you need them (very flexible).

I noticed that too. It looks like they just the "Buy" section of the
site the same and expect you to call the reseller to get the real price.
It would have been nice if they would have disabled the "Buy" link for
that particular page. But you can't expect Adobe to make anything

RE: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-07 Thread Fred Ridder

Yes, but that "lowball street price" is from an "Amazon marketplace" vendor who
don't look terribly substantial--their "storefront" only offers 16 products
total, and only 55 customers have posted feedback for them (although it is all
positive feedback)--and there is currently only 1 copy in stock (down from 4
copies yesterday).

Re: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-10 Thread Shmuel Wolfson
Is the upgrade deal also for 30% off FM8 to FM10 and FM9 to FM10 or just
from 7.x to FM10?

All,

As a matter of interest. I went to the page on the original post. Noting that
the only options for upgrade were from 8 or 9, I saw that at the bottom of the
page there was a link for more information. In this country, we have no
reseller network that services upgrades. The last time I upgraded I had to buy
from Singapore.

Therefore, I have sent an email requesting information from Adobe (the third
link IIRC).

*I have had no response.* I cannot ring the 1800 number because they do not
work in this country. I cannot use the special links because this is not US or
Canada.

Looks like I will be missing out on this offer because Adobe can't get its act
together.

Not surprised really.

Alan

PS I would be interested to see a link to the special offer on Amazon.

FYI -

Robert, I respect your opinion on FM7.x. I have observed that in isolated cases
a single person or small advanced group of advanced users are sometimes capable
of exercising enough discipline to continue satisfactory production with
version FM7.x , which was last updated 7 years ago.

There *are*, however, definite limitations with FM7.x vs. FM10 that affect most
people, e.g. no Unicode support, no rich graphics, more time-consuming steps in
locating and removing format overrides, and a more challenging path to output
to ePubs (via TCS.) For many of us, changing demands on our deliverables are
not met by code that was written 7 to 10 years ago.

There is a long list of nearly 50 enhancements to FrameMaker that have taken
place over the past 10 years, listed at the *bottom* of the call to action
webpage below. I'll use the full URL, just scroll to the bottom:

http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/fm-upgrade.html

There are 2 short blogs that anyone in a mid-sized workgroup with FM7.x should
consider reviewing.
(NOTE: edit line breaks in the full URLs below before copy/paste into browser
address field.)

(a) Blog with links to 4 Captivate videos:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2012/05/videos-5-compelling-reasons-to-upgrade-from-framemaker-7-x-to-framemaker-10.html

(b) Blog highlighting timesaving features for FM7.x users who are not
interested in structure:

http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2012/06/what-if-you-use-framemaker-7-x-and-dont-want-dita-upgrade-to-fm-10.html

I hope many in the group will share this information with their contacts who
are not fully satisfied with FrameMaker 7.x, as this such FM users to upgrade
FrameMaker to FrameMaker, rather than FrameMaker to the full Tech Comm Suite.

For those interested, time is running out as there are now only 8 days left to
take advantage of the promotion. This topic becomes a dead issue a week from
tomorrow.

I will step aside from this topic.

The offer is "Adobe FrameMaker 7.X customers can receive a savings of
30% on the FULL version of FrameMaker 10 software purchased through
Adobe Customer Service, or a participating reseller worldwide."

Adobe charges $999, 30% off that is $699. Amazon charges $634.

Personally I'd stick with 7 unless I had a specific reason to upgade.
Adobe introduced a lot of bugs with the UI makeover in FM9 and if
anything they got worse in FM10. The last new feature they added that
I have any use for was the multiple undo in 7.2.

Re: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-10 Thread Mike Wickham
Upgrades are $399 from FM9 and $599 from FM8. I think the only reason
the FM7 upgrade being discussed is a big deal is because FM7 has been no
longer available for upgrade pricing. Users had to pay full $999 to move
to FM10.

Of course, then one has to think about whether an FM7 to FM10 upgrade
really represents a savings this late in the game. If it costs $700 to
upgrade, and FM11 comes out this summer, it'll cost (presumably) another
$400 to upgrade to the latest version. ($1100 total.) The current price
for FM is $999. So it would cost an EXTRA $100 to upgrade from FM7 to
FM11 by that route. Of course, you would be able to install both FM10
and FM11 on your computer that way. But it might be best to just wait
and buy FM11.

Re: Deal for upgrading from FM7.x to FM10 ends June 15

2012-06-11 Thread Maxwell Hoffmann
Note,

The upgrade in the subject line is only for FrameMaker 7.0, FrameMaker 7.1 and
FrameMaker 7.2 to FrameMaker 10. It is a special promotion because "FrameMaker
to FrameMaker" upgrades are usually only available for the previous 2 releases
(e.g. FM8 and FM9).

The link below shows the "normal" upgrade plans for FM7, FM8 and FM9. (Details
on the promotion that expires on June 15th is not listed.)

http://www.adobe.com/products/framemaker/upgrade.html

You will notice that previous to this special program in which FM7.x can
upgrade to "one product" FM10, the only option was to upgrade from FM 7.x to
the full Tech Comm Suite 3.5 (at less than normal full cost.)
