Re: Frame 7.1 to 8 upgrade -- benefits?
I just read the Framers Digest from Friday and wanted to add some information about Adobe's Transactional Licensing Program. We purchased our current TPS2 licenses through that program because it seemed like a good deal. I later found out that phone support isn't included in TLP purchases. (Not that Adobe phone support is my favorite way of spending an afternoon at work.) When I had a problem I had to try getting it resolved through e-mail support--and in the end was told I should enter a bug report. It occurs to me that instead of (or in addition to) a "Product Evangelist" Adobe ought to have a "Customer Ombudsman". Re: Frame 7.1 to 8 upgrade -- benefits?
You're going to find it "interesting" locating a copy of Frame 8. It's doable but nobody sells it. There is a post on the Adobe Frame forum, I think, that has a solution where you get a volume license and use the license key to enable the Frame 8 features. I use Frame 7 and Frame 8 but not Frame 9 so I can't comment on the stability issues except what I've read here. If the Paragraph Designer freezes up I'd find that pretty annoying. Join the Adobe Transactional Licensing Program: http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/volumelicensing/tlp/ Adobe's Transactional Licensing Program (TLP) 5 makes it easy to get volume pricing with no membership requirements and no agreements to sign. This program is available worldwide to commercial, education, and government organizations and covers most Adobe desktop products. You can then buy FM9 and downgrade to 8 with official blessings. This makes a lot of sense for companies who already have Frame installations and just need one or two added copies; they don't have to upgrade everyone (not financially possible in most cases these days) or else switch to Word. ;-) They can just get one or two licenses and downgrade to match the rest of their installed base. Definitely one of Adobe's better moves. ;-) -- Jeremy H. Griffith, at Omni Systems Inc. http://www.omsys.com/ ___ You are currently subscribed to framers as arch...@mail-archive.com. Re: Frame 7.1 to 8 upgrade -- benefits?
(We are cautious about 9.0, don't want to struggle with a buggy interface.) I wouldn't call the interface buggy. The only bugs popping to mind are one caused by dragging tab stops on the ruler instead of applying them in the paragraph designer, and some issues with Save as PDF. The first bug will probably be squashed soon, now that it has been reported. Save as PDF has had issues in every version of FM. The gurus generally recommend against using it, and printing to AdobePDF instead. The FM team in India deserves kudos for the work they've done one recent releases and how responsive they have been to bug reports. FM9 is a good, stable product and well worth the upgrade. I highly recommend the two videos on the new FM 9 interface and FM 9 workspaces at this location: http://www.adobe.com/support/framemaker/. I struggled a little with the new interface until I watched the videos, and then it all became clear. To me, the new interface is an improvement over the old one. RE: Frame 7.1 to 8 upgrade -- benefits?
I've watched the threads with interest, Nancy, and did the 30-day eval last spring. I know there are a few aggravations, but as soon as we can spring for TCS 2 here, I'm going to FM 9 and the rest and not looking back. All in all, life will be easier and more productive. We're using FrameMaker 7.1 on XP with SP3. I've been offered the opportunity to upgrade at work. The wikipedia summary of Frame 8.0 says "FrameMaker 8 introduced Unicode, Flash, 3D and built-in DITA support. A patch (8.0.1) was released during November, 2007 to fix a number of bugs and errors." For my purposes, the Unicode support is a beautiful thing. Did you derive other benefits that the wikipedia summary does not mention? Did 8.0 make a big difference to you? > I think my first question would be if > FM 8 isn't offered for sale anywhere > because it's not a supported release, how you'd upgrade... That thought crossed my mind as well. I like FM9. I admit that it took me a while to adjust to the change in the interface, but I'm used to it now. If you plan to use DITA, I definitely say upgrade to 9; it handles DITA better than 8 does. Re: Frame 7.1 to 8 upgrade -- benefits?
I think my first question would be if FM 8 isn't offered for sale anywhere because it's not a supported release, how you'd upgrade... And I was curious about why you think 9 has a buggy interface... after a year in use and three patches, it's at least as stable as 7.1 and quicker. Not to mention the other capabilities that were introduced in 8 and 9. Have you tested the eval version? Art Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com "...
