while I am pretty sure that I have disabled this dialogue box in the
preferences already, I'll verify again tomorrow.  every suggestion is
welcome!  in the meantime, I am also exploring the runfm batch.

I think it's a good idea to develop a plan "B" as a fallback solution,
so I think we'll go down the runfm route.

Yes.  And it's also free; for print/PDF output, you just
need to install the demo version:
  http://www.omsys.com/dcl/download.htm

We use it ourselves for producing the User's Guide PDFs
and other formats.  If you set up a .bat file with the
runfm command, and put a shortcut to it on your desktop,
you get one-click production of your PDFs, possibly
several of them at once.  ;-)
