Re: save as... FM 8 Mif

Latest versions of Trados support all mif versions.
Older versions of Trados support older version of Mif.

I think that in my sistuation, this agency didn't update Trados tools.

Thanks.

RE: save as... FM 8 Mif

2012-09-30 Thread Reng, Dr. Winfried
Hi,

I can confirm this.
Our translator had not upgraded his Trados software for some years
as the next Trados release had changed the way of working drastically.
However, his old version could open only MIF 8 files. Changing
to in a text editor in the first line of a MIF 10 file did not
work.
As I had not uninstalled FrameMaker 8 when I installed FrameMaker 10
I was able to open MIF 10 files with FrameMaker 8 and save them as MIF.

Now our translator upgraded. No problems with MIF 10.

Best regards

Winfried

2012-09-28 Thread Alison Craig
My Language Service Provider (LSP) uses Trados and I use FM9 and there are no
problems, so this isn't a Trados issue.

It's likely an LSP issue - when I moved from MS Word 2003 to FM9, I simply told
my LSP that they needed FM9 - which was brand new at the time. They didn't balk
in the least. They just upgraded to FM9.

The *only* way you can make MIF 8 is with Frame 8.

Another good reason to upgrade from FM 9, 10, and 11 to FM8. I believe Adobe
now allows that upgrade. They definitely did under their TLP (Transactional
Licensing Program), which anyone can use to purchase Frame.

If Trados isn't supporting versions later than 8, that would be a showstopper
for many users...
but if the agency simply has an older version of Trados, you might need a
different agency.

Anybody know if Trados does support versions later than MIF 8?

Re: save as... FM 8 Mif

2012-09-28 Thread Mario Valerio
Thanks Nadine,
I'm sure that mif 8, 9 and 10 are the same format regarding opening it in
previous versions of Framemaker.
In my case, however, I need a mif not to open it in FM but to use it in
translation workflow in Trados.
I'm not expert with Trados, but the agency say me that their specific
version of Trados works fine only with mif 8 files.

Ciao, Mario

Thanks, Chris!

Based on what I see already, I think I will find the SafetyMIF tool quite
useful, I believe!

Separate question: I have a version of a document that describes your CUDspan
tools, but do not see it on your web site. Is there an updated version that you
could provide?

Thanks again,

Z

It's starting to get weird, how often this subject keeps coming up.

First, Maker 10 MIF should not have any problem opening up in Maker 8. So
there's no obvious need to actually produce Maker 8 MIF. (Unless your work
flow demands that the MIF actually be version 8.)

Second, I have a free plugin on my site called SafetyMif... The idea is that
whenever you perform a save operation, the plugin also saves a MIF version of
your file. So you could open a book, hit Save All In Book, and you would have
MIFs for all the files in the book. Then save the book, and you have a MIF for
that.

To easily open the files in Maker 8, you grab a dir with all the MIFs, and any
referenced files. Then change the filename extension for all the doc files
FROM .mif TO .fm. Then open the book, open all files in book, then save all
files in book... For saving the files, you'll have to confirm overwriting the
mif files (they all say .fm in their filenames) with binary. It so happens I
also have a freeware tool for changing the filename extension.

You can find this stuff at cudspan.net... Go into the professional pages, and
look for freeware tools. The SafetyMif plugin is in the Maker 11 and 10
sections. The file extension tool is in the Java section.

Good luck!
