I also use the ALT+0151 sequence to insert the eM-dashes - very quick and
convenient in Windows.

However, I prefer the look of the eM-dash without the spaces. Hence the
problems with the spell-checker!

I have received another e-mail suggesting that I use thin-spaces before and
after the eM-dash to be able to use the spell checker ... I have not tried that
yet ...

I find Ctrl+q, shift+q just as quick to produce an em-dash as typing two
hyphens, and Ctrl+q, shift+p faster than space-hyphen-space for an
en-dash. But then, my pinkie is a lousy driver on the rough roads of
the top row ;-)

Re: Spell checking with em dashes in text ...

2010-06-28 Thread Andy Kass
Hi,

I have FM 8p277 and spell checking seems to ignore the em-dashes, but upon
testing, it's weirder than that. It spell checks the whole word before the
em-dash, and ignores anything after it. So I see the following (and here I use
the conventional two dashes for an em-dash in plain text):

mitake--mistake => both words and the em-dash are highlighted by the
spell-checker

mistake--mitake => not caught by the spell checker

In my options, the only characters I have set to ignore in words are . = and "
(for code samples).

Fortunately, we don't use em-dashes in our documentation (from my experience,
they're not generally used in technical writing), so it's not an issue for me,
but it still looks like a bug. I agree with you (and the CMS :-) that there
should be no spaces--that's how I've always seen it in print.

The space-EN-dash-space has a different usage: it's an alternative to a period
for separating lead-ins from whatever follows. For example:

 Lead-in - Description.
 Lead-in - Description.

And I do like the fact that Word automatically converts space-dash-space to
space-EN-dash-space. It also converts dash-dash to EM-dash automatically when
it occurs between two words without any spaces. Those are very nice shortcuts
I'd love to see in FM.

Thanks,

  Andy

I forgot to mention that, if you don't figure out why it's not working, you
could put thin spaces around the em dash, instead of regular spaces. They
don't look bad.

I'm not seeing this in FM9, with the latest patched version. FM9 seems to be
skipping the em dashes just fine. Make sure you have all the patches
installed.

Also click the Options button in the Spelling Checker dialog to see if you
need to adjust settings there. Mine are set to the default settings. There
is a Get Defaults button you can use to reset them.

Spell checking with em dashes in text ...

2010-06-25 Thread Syed Zaeem Hosain (syed.hos...@aeris.net)
Hi, all.

Something that has been bugging me for a while ... time to ask the experts
here! This issue is making spell checking more tedious for some larger
documents ...

In my documents, I use the Chicago Manual of Style requirement for spaces next
to em dashes in body text. Specifically, to *not* to use any spaces before or
after the em dash (as they say, the dash is "set closed" rather than "set
open").

I.e., it says that the usage should be "wordone---wordtwo" rather than
"wordone---wordtwo" (where I am using "---" to represent the em
dash, "" to represent a single space character, and making up word
"wordone" and "wordtwo" for this contrived example).

However, when spell-checking in FM (FrameMaker 9, on Windows Vista and Windows
7, fully patched), it finds occurrences of "wordone---wordtwo" as being spelled
incorrectly. Even though "wordone" and "wordtwo" are both individually spelled
correctly!

Yet, there are no such problems with "wordone---wordtwo". These are
handled perfectly well!

I have not found (a) a way to prevent FM spell-checker from finding these uses,
or (b) a way to make FM ignore them using the Find options.

Thus, my alternatives appear to be:

1. Insert a space before and after the em dash (Yuck! not a nice look! And the
Chicago Manual of Style agrees with this !)

2. Insert a space before and after, and use an en dash instead of an em dash
(make sure you note the "en"!). Btw, this is what Microsoft Word does
automatically if you type "wordone"wordtwo" ... it
changes the to an . This is not a bad alternative, but not as
nice looking---the parenthetical aside is just not as clearly demarked!

3. Use parentheses for the asides. Not as nice looking ... although I do do
this in a few places for other good reasons.

Any advice on how to handle this situation? What you all do for this?
