First the two-step process you're doing is unnecessary and may contribute to the problem Instead, try printing to the Acrobat printer and in the FM Print dialog box, check Generate Acrobat data but UNCHECK Print to file. Distiller will automatically generate the PS file, distill, and delete it. Second... are automatic updates turned on? It's possible some Adobe files either in FM or in Acrobat changed. Interestingly, I had similar problems with FM 10 last night but not today. It is fully patched and running on Windows 7 Ultimate (also up to date), 3.2 GHz machine, 12 GB RAM, 1 terabyte of free space. I changed nothing, but got the message saying that an appropriate printer could not be found. Today, it’s working, and all I did was to reboot. Stumped in Ypsilanti. Re: problems creating pdf files from FM11
To Art, Jack and all others, First, many thanks for the suggestions, but as it turned out, it was the smallest thing that tripped us up -- an illegal character in the FrameMaker filename. In this case, the guy who created the files -- and has worked with FM for some years -- included a comma in his filename. Our filenames include the projected date-of-release of a manual. Thus, the filenames are (section name) (product name) (manual type) (date).fm In this case, Introduction - SRC885 - SOM - August 21, 2013.fm (For those interested, it's the Introduction section of a Safety, Operation Maintenance Manual for an 85-metric ton lifting capacity rough terrain crane to be released on August 21, 2013.) I also sent this Introduction section file to my own FrameMaker guru, Tim Murray, here in Atlanta. He got back to me almost immediately that the file prints to postscript and then distills to pdf beautifully with the comma deleted from the filename. However, I recall in years past that a pop-up would occur if an illegal character was used in a filename, but I never see that anymore. At least now we know not use commas in a FrameMaker filename. Aare there any other such characters I should know about? (Mine is a Windows XP platform with FrameMaker 8 and we have 3 Windows 7 platforms with FrameMaker 11). Second, I sent this e-mail asking for help on Wednesday, August 21, but it didn't appear at all until today, Sunday, August 25. And this has occurred in the past as well. With not seeing my message here on Wednesday, I posted it to techwr-L the same day and got suggestions the same day. I guess that if things don't change, I'll simply lurk here but depend on techwr-L for immediate (or at least same-day) results. As for Tim, he does great FM and other software contract tech writing and has been a wealth of support to me. His website is just great as well; it's at http://www.techknowledgecorp.com/ Give him a try, you won't be sorry. -- Ken in Atlanta From: Art Campbell art.campb...@gmail.com To: Ken Poshedly poshe...@bellsouth.net Cc: framers@lists.frameusers.com framers@lists.frameusers.com Sent: Sunday, August 25, 2013 10:22 AM Subject: Re: problems creating pdf files from FM11 First the two-step process you're doing is unnecessary and may contribute to the problem Instead, try printing to the Acrobat printer and in the FM Print dialog box, check Generate Acrobat data but UNCHECK Print to file. RE: Problems with PDF creation since Windows update
I may have stumbled on this problem as well, although I am now completely confused. On Monday, I tried to install the Acrobat 10 trial and had issues as I didn't uninstall Acrobat 9 first. After I uninstalled Acrobat 10 and repaired the Acrobat 9 installation, I could no longer do anything with PDFs in FrameMaker. This includes Print Book as FM9 doesn't seem to recognize Distiller, although Distiller is really still there and opens just fine. Before I reinstalled anything, I was planning to contact the List to see what order I should do things in (ie, which comes first Acrobat or Frame reinstall?). Given Laura's issue, maybe my issue has nothing to do with my Acrobat problems and actually relates to the Windows updates - or not! Does anyone have any thoughts? Alison and Laura, I had an issue with Win 7 64-bit, FM 9, and Acrobat X. Win 7 32-bit prints fine. Performing the following steps resolves the error for me. Although I had previously cleared this option in Printing Preferences, the solution seems to be clearing this option in the Printing Defaults. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/617432 . On Win7 x64 with FM8 and Acrobat 9 Pro, this resolved the issue for me: 1. Click the Start menu, and then click Devices and Printers 2. Right-click the Adobe PDF printer, then click Printing Preferences, and then deselect Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts 3. Click OK 4. Right-click the Adobe PDF printer, then click Printer Properties, then click the Advanced tab, and then click Printing Defaults 5. On the Adobe PDF Settings tab, deselect Rely on system fonts only; do not use document fonts, and then click OK. 6. On the Adobe PDF Properties dialog, click OK Hope this helps, Tom From: framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com [mailto:framers-boun...@lists.frameusers.com] On Behalf Of Alison Craig Sent: Wednesday, May 30, 2012 10:22 AM To: Laura Fergusson; framers@lists.frameusers.com Subject: RE: Problems with PDF creation since Windows update I may have stumbled on this problem as well, although I am now completely confused. There appear to have been 3 Windows updates on Sunday evening and since then I can't Save as PDF. I'm using Frame 8 on Windows 7. I am now resorting to trying to save as a ps and then distilling, like I used to do in the dim and distant past... If anyone has any ideas, that would be great. I have tried using System restore but for some reason it keeps failing no matter which point I choose. Re: Problems with PDF creation since Windows update
Sounds like FrameMaker has lost track of Acrobat 9. You probably need to reinstall or repair Acrobat. Re: Problems with PDF
Tina, You might try creating the PDF from postscript rather than Frame: 1) Open the book and all files in it. 2) Print the book to a postscript file using the Adobe PDF printer option. 3) Double-click the postscript file to start Distiller and create the PDF. Re: Problems with PDF
This may be the fact for Frame 7.2/Distiller7 to. I have on several occasions in the last year or so complained about FrameMaker 7.2 crashing when distilling a book file (print book to file and then distill). Recently I tried setting the Tagged PDF on, and setting tags for only some three elements (structured), and now the file distilled without any problems. RE: Problems with PDF
Hi all-- Schlomo's fix worked. I turned on tagged PDF, and now I can create a PDF that includes a generated file. Life is good, thanks!
