Re: [Frameworks] Filmo
Hi David, Thanks for testing it for me. If your happy with it I'm happy with it as I trust your judgment. Can we call it a square $300 including the case and postage? Do you have paypal? I can send you the money that way. My bank charges me for payments to other countries so paypal is better for me. I might be able to pay you sooner than the 20th as well. Christmas wasn't as financially destructive as I predicted. Thanks for the advise on the lights as well. I scanned through it quickly earlier but will have a better read now. I forgot to mention the most important thing about the reason I needed the LED lights... They can run for hours on batteries. I do a lot of out door shoots and don't always have a power point. Is there a way around this with CFL's? I'm always happy for the cheapest option. [Frameworks] Filmo
OK, I checked the 70DR for speed and it was right on within the limits of my test method. (I have some marked slug, and I roll 30 seconds off. I start and stop the shutter manually by watching the clock, so it's not exact. Then I check to see how much film went through the gate. I did it twice. Both times it came up 2 frames short of 30 seconds exactly at 24 fps. The speed setting on the Filmo, like most 16mm cameras is continuously variable - there are no click stops, so that 2 frames is well within the margin of error of me lining up the marks on the dial. Even a deviation of 10-20 framnes would only mean that the dial isn't very accurate - not necessarily a problem with the camera. Anyway, this came out as good as i could have hoped.) I checked shipping. If I just send the camera and lenses I think it should be about $45 US. I do have a case for it though, and if you want that, the extra size and weight would put it at about $55 US. Since I'm not operating a business here, and it's not new, etc. etc., I'm not sure if/how a customs duty needs to be involved. I could say I'm sending it to you on loan, and that I'll be picking it back up when I travel to the UK later in the year, or something like that... [Frameworks] INTERCINE 16mm/35mm Flatbed film editing table AVAILABLE FREE
INTERCINE 16mm/35mm Flatbed film editing table AVAILABLE FOR FREE! The Atlantic Filmmakers' Cooperative (www.afcoop.ca) is offering up its Intercine Flatbed Table for free to someone who would like this fine piece of classic editing machinery. This fine Italian made editing table is capable of running 35mm and 16mm film and employs a front projection system. It has one picture track, two sound tracks and other features. Runs very smoothly. Currently, the 16mm projection is out of alignment and there is only one ceramic lamp holder instead of two. It works well for 35mm editing. It could be made fully functional by someone with some electrical and/or mechanical skills. It could also be turned into a 16mm or 35mm contact printing table fairly simply by an eager person. The Intercine is 74” Wide X 40” Deep X 32” High. It is very heavy. It transports dis-assembled in three parts. The unit is very large and if being shipped long distances will require storage support units and/or crates. In the event of shipping, all shipping costs must be arranged by the person taking it. The Atlantic Filmmakers' Cooperative (AFCOOP) is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia. This unit is available for free and we would be happy to find it a new home. Anthology’s series runs in tandem with exhibition at Microscope Gallery Anthology is thrilled to present a two-day program of underground film scene luminary James Fotopoulos, including three world premieres! For almost twenty years now, Fotopoulos has been astoundingly prolific and ceaselessly inventive, and it's been too long since Anthology last hosted him. A mainstay of the former NY Underground Film Festival, his work is evoked annually during Migrating Forms, the multimedia festival that grew out of the NYUFF, which takes its name from one of Fotopoulos’s best-known films. In tandem with an exhibition at Bushwick’s Microscope Gallery, we are pleased to present four recent works, three of them world premieres. CHIMERA 2011, 96 minutes, video. “Thousands of years into the future, through the eyes of an alien life-form, we see the fossilized beings of Ronald Reagan and William Casey enact their relationship as if in a crude ancient play. CHIMERA was originally intended to be part of a trilogy about Western Civilization, including NAUTILUS, a sprawling ooze-like pre-history currently being made as a book, and RICHARD NIXON, a heavily-researched epic of aesthetic exhaustion (currently in production).” –J.F. –Thursday, January 5 at 7:00. A dashing leading man of the forties picks up a stag model hitchhiker on the Boulevard one night in West Hollywood during the 1960s. As they remain stuck in traffic, the young model recognizes the star, asks advice, and triggers a psychedelic discourse on acting for the camera and the metaphysics of fame on the big screen. & WORLD PREMIERE! THICK COMB 2011, 28 minutes, video. “For two decades the image of the ‘thick comb’, a fleshy mass with protruding stalks, stayed with me. Written in 1993, THICK COMB was my earliest unrealized script, about a criminal porn producer hunting down the world’s greatest lover for thieving an adult film’s production budget. A couple years ago I resurrected the piece and rewrote it with the protagonist confessing to his lover my other incomplete film scenarios from the 1990s.” –J.F. –Thursday, January 5 at 9:15. ALICE IN WONDERLAND 2010, 99 minutes, video. An adaptation of the 1886 musical ALICE IN WONDERLAND: A DREAM PLAY FOR CHILDREN, by Henry Saville Clark and Walter Slaughter, Fotopoulos’s feature-length film propels the Clark/Slaughter score into the 21st century digital age, using sculptures, drawings, text, and original music to explore the late-19th century’s evolution of painting, literature, and theater into early photography and moving pictures. –Friday, January 6 at 7:30. ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] Re-authored Imagery Culled from Commercial DVDs
The key here is this quote from just below the lead: > taking photographs from a book about Rastafarians and using them without > permission to create the collages and a series of paintings based on them, > which quickly sold for serious money even by today’s gilded art-world > standards: almost $2.5 million for one of the works. Copyright is about money. This is a mater for civil, not criminal litigation. Regardless of what the prevailing fair Use interpretation is, no one is going to spend the time and money to take you to court unless either a) you have deep pockets, or b) they have money to burn AND 1) your work is available in commercial markets where it could reasonably be confused with their product (c.f. Negativland / U2) or 2) they're REALLY paranoid about their brands (c.f. Walt Disney). That said, in the miniscule lijlihood a copyright holder does want to come after you, you're in trouble... not because you'd lose in court (you'd probably win if you have ANY recontextualizing artistic intent), but becuase you don't have the time and money to fight it out. FWIW, it seems like Prince mounted an incompetent case: > [Prince] also made it clear that he was not making art that commented on [the > original] work itself. (Judge Batts ruled that for a work to be > transformative it must “in some way comment on, relate to the historical > context of, or critically refer back to the original works” it borrows from, > a test she said Mr. Prince’s work failed.) But I think almost ANY appropriated imagery can be argued to be in dialogue with it's source in some critical way, if you think about it, which it seems Prince chose not to do, rather standing on his ethos as an Artiste (It is my art!), a bad choice in this case (not to mention silly, regardless). ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] LED light kit for film shoots?
I have one of those Litepanel 1x1 knockoffs, but it's a different brand: http://www.socanland.com/Product.aspx?id=56 Mine is bi-color, so you can dial smoothly from tungsten to daylight balanced light. I runs continuously on a battery for several hours and it's surprisingly bright. However, it does have a green tinge that shows itself more in scenes when it's used as a primary light. Usually I don't notice the color shift as long as it's being used as an accent or backlight, and I'm sure you could fix it with a 1/4 minus green gel on the light (like they have in that Ebay photo). Below are some frames from raw video footage. The camera's white balance was set to daylight and I was using a 2x1 ft Socanland Litepanel. So twice as bright as the 1x1. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4257037/standard1.png http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4257037/standard2.png (litepanel as a fill light) http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4257037/standard3.png (no litepanel) Hope that helps! wrote: > Hi frameworks, > > I have been greatly utilizing my makeshift DIY lighting kit over the last > 2-3 months. Re: [Frameworks] LED light kit for film shoots?
Those lights would be suitable for working with daylight or tungsten balanced film. But are they suitable for the type of work you are doing for this shoot? If I was shooting a scene for a dramatic film I wouldn't light the scene with LEDs. But for a compact & portable light for lighting interviews its a good choice. Are you going to use these lightsenough in your video work to justify the price? Why not rent the lights you need for the film shoot and continue using your DIY kit for your regular work? You could also use a colour temperature meter on your lights and buy some gel to colour correct your kit. If you are using Tri-X then colour temperature is of minor concern. B&W film is more sensitive to blue light but its only about a 1/3rd of a stop difference. With the 100D you could shoot a white card and/or colour chart and then correct the colour in post. Re: [Frameworks] Re-authored Imagery Culled from Commercial DVDs
Hi Ken, Just to cover the mac angle incase you're using one - I use a free download called 'Mac the Ripper' that has ripped everything I've put through it so far without any problems. My question is two-fold: First, are there any intellectual property issues regarding image and sound, given the length of the clips? The project won't have a theatrical release, only film festivals and self-distribution. Secondly, what would be the best method for ripping these clips from a dvd of the original source film?
