[Frameworks] Paul Sharits multi-projection question

2014-03-31 Thread Ekrem Serdar
Heyya Framers,

So based on his notes, it seems that many of Paul Sharits'
multi-projector pieces (Shutter Interface, Dream Displacement, among
others) are primarily conceived as installations. However, as many of you
know, there are also "theatrical" versions of these films, using two
projectors instead of four, and foregoing other alterations to the
machines. (There's a bunch of these over at Filmmakers Coop.)

The question: Would you say its correct that Sharits made these black box
versions to simply give the films an expanded (hoho) life, especially
during a time period when film projection was a rarer sight in galleries?
So not necessarily the intended version, but a different (and obviously
more accessible) way to showcase his ideas.

I hear this might be a sensitive subject; but the way I see it is that he
did make the prints, and as long as it's presented appropriately no
problem. We'll be showing the two-projector version of Shutter Interface in
Austin next week (which i had the pleasure of seeing at Hallwalls some
years back), so just preparing.

Re: [Frameworks] LGBT Archival Footage, Home Movies Wanted

2014-03-31 Thread alena williams
dear stephen,

sharon hayes presented some footage from a 1971 demonstration in a recent
exhibition in berlin:

Kate Millett and the Women's Liberation Cinema
Christopher Street Liberation Day Parade, 1971
16mm film, color, sound; 33 min.

she and the original filmmaker created new sound to accompany the images,
so it seems the authorship on this new version is shared.

I am not sure this is possibe wth FCPX but if you work in a 2K
workflow you could export your film as DPX, that is, as thousands of
individual TIF files, one per frame, so you could imagine importing
the problematic ones in photoshop and cleaning them, of course without
changing their colour profile. Long, painstaking work, but precise.

Re: [Frameworks] banned film

2014-03-31 Thread Scott Stark
Thanks to all for the great tips on "banned" films! Many I hadn't
thought of -- frameworkers can always be counted on for good suggestions.

In case anyone's interested, I'm putting this show together for the
Forbidden Film Fest in Austin, Texas -- and there is a call for
submissions (April 15 deadline) ("for a naughty good time"):

Columbia titles are handled by Sony Repertory:
http://www.movingimage.us/visit/calendar/2013/05/18/detail/the-monkees-in-head

Or by Swank if you are a non-theatrical venue.

I am 99% sure they do not distribute it despite being the original copyright
holders, though they may be able to point you in the right direction, as would
MOMI.

Last I checked this wonderful film was more or less out of circulation, BUT
a quick search shows that MOMI is showing it next month. I would ask them:
