Re: [Frameworks] Films about labor and leisure

2014-05-11 Thread Warren Cockerham
Hi Christopher.

I think this conversation come up back in January - a slightly different
iteration. You should check the Frameworks digest for a thread entitled,
"Films/Videos looking at concepts of work."

all the best,
Warren

Hey Chris-
A propos de Nice came to mind. Jean Vigo. Lots of time spent on workers and
lots of time spent on those enjoying the spaces made possible by the
workers--

I'm not sure if this comes close to what you're looking for but Terre
Nash' *Who's
counting? * is a great take on a
part of life that currently gets filed under 'leisure' (in economic terms)
but should more appropriately be re-valued as full-time employment.

Re: [Frameworks] Film Locations in the Salt Flats

2014-05-11 Thread Chris G
Hi Tenzin,

The only point the public is technically allowed to access is from a rest area
almost exactly 10 miles east of Wendover on interstate 80. This is a popular
site, but one can walk out a good distance (or possibly forever) from the rest
area. Unfortunately the better view in my humble opinion, would be from the
north side of I-80. It has a more mountainous landscape and the lighting might
be better depending on the time of day. There's technically no way to turn
around and get onto the westbound side until about 30 minutes east of Wendover,
but there are probably points for emergency vehicles to turn around before
then. But to do that legally one would have to drive over an hour. Also be
warned that there's only one or two gas stations between Wendover an Salt Lake
City.

Cheers,
Chris

[Frameworks] Films about labor and leisure

2014-05-11 Thread Chris G
Hi all,

I'm looking for films that portray situations of labor and leisure
together. It would be great if there were texts specific to those films,
but I'm also seeking out writings on/that reference this dynamic within the
context of films, cinemas or public spaces. I'm trying to find modernist
essays on cinema as spaces of leisure as well. Obviously Sharon Lockhart's
"Lunch Break" comes to mind. I feel like there was a thread similar to this
a while back, so I apologize if this is redundant, but I wasn't able to
find anything through a search of the archive.

Thanks!
