[Frameworks] This time the tracks are up

2017-08-04 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

I recently got my DAT recorder repaired and have been listening to some of my
80+ recordings. Most of these recordings were made between 1992 and 2004. I
also have some DAT copies of much older cassette recordings to catch up on.

I haven't done any music lately other than very informal percussion
improvisation intended as public reps only so so much, experiential rather than
something to be presented. I don't plan to start doing electronic music again,
but the process of listening to these old recordings is fascinating.

I just put up a CD that I made in the early 2000's on band camp
athttps://doctort1.bandcamp.com/album/data-from-recent-experiments
https://doctort1.bandcamp.com/album/data-from-recent-experiments>. After I
have backed up all of the dats and have found time to listen to more of them -
I'll add more tracks to my band camp site.

[Frameworks] Drawings based on Brian Solomon's work posted

2016-10-02 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157671265002984

I have known photographer and author Brian Solomon since he was about four, and
we have been looking at each other's photographs for almost the entire time. In
the 70s, 80s, and early 90s I did a lot of work with multiple image photography
using film only - this was in the days before Photoshop. You can see some of
this work at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/albums/72157635417625824. Brian was
kind enough to let me make copies of some of his photographs to use in my own
photography,

I was recently looking at some of my old work on film which I had scanned, and
I came across Brian pictures and realized that they would be very good material
for my Drawing On Photography project. These are some drawings that I made
using Brian's photos.

Brian is the author of over 60 books, most of which are about railroads and
most of which include some of his photography. You can see more of his work at

[Frameworks] More Drawing On Photography sketches posted

Hi,

https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157670874151501 I hope you
enjoy them,

"Drawing On Photography" is a project that combines drawing, photography and
computer graphics. There are three stages in the creation of each image (four
if you count software that I wrote during 18 years with Boris FX.)

I choose one of my photographs and make some treated versions using one or more
of the filters I wrote when I was with Boris. I print the resulting images on
heavy paper and draw over the result. I have found it very satisfying to
combine my drawing and photography while using software that I wrote and
designed.

My drawings tends to follow and extend the lines and color palette of the
printed images.I sometimes can't tell which lines are from the print and which
lines I drew, I take this as a sure sign that I have successfully integrated
the drawing and the print!

Here are some selections from a pile that just keeps growing :-)

[Frameworks] "Dance to the Future" Video posted to You Tube

2016-05-30 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi

I posted a new video to you tube at https://youtu.be/KERWIXYjXJc

"Dance to the Future" is a companion piece to my video "Dance from the Past"
which can be seen at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEt3IZ_TkaY . This video
is made from footage taken in February at one of Catherine Musinsky's Tabular
Rasa events. These events are mixed-media improvised extravaganzas – February's
version included improvised dance, music, poetry, painting, video, and drawing.

I was originally planning to draw but decided at the last minute to shoot video
instead, as I wanted some more footage of dancers work with my video
improvisations. I sat just in front of the stage with my camera on a tripod
during the first half of the performance. The audience was invited to dance
during the second half, so I danced for half an hour with my camera in one
hand. I went through as much of the footage as I could and chose several
segments to use in this video piece.

As in "Dance from the Past", I improvisationally applied many of the video
effects that I wrote during my 8 years as a software engineer for Boris FX. I
then sequenced the clips to make this video.

Hi.

I just posted a photo essay called " Primary Day" to Flickr at

Primary Day in Boston was the sort of brilliantly sunny day that makes anything
that isn't made of plastic into a good photo subject. After I voted, I took
photos of some vintage election signs and went for a nice long walk through
parts of Arlington that I had not walked through before. Here are some of the
pictures.

[Frameworks] "Dance from the Past" Video posted to You Tube

2016-03-04 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

I just posted a new video on YouTube at https://youtu.be/ZEt3IZ_TkaY

In December of last year, my cousin Steven Golos sent me a DVD containing
family home movies from the late 1930s. I immediately started integrating this
material into my live performances and eventually decided to work more deeply
with two long clips of a young woman dancing in ballet costume.

This piece was created from those clips by selecting different parts of them
and improvisationally applying various filters. I think of it as a kind of
visual jazz played in non-real-time, with the video footage filling the role
that the melody and harmony would take in a jazz improvisation. I coded most of
the filters that I used during my 18 years as a software engineer for Boris FX.

I hope you enjoy it. Thanks.

[Frameworks] Importing vintage Footage from DVD to AE

2016-01-04 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

Here is a curveball for you!

a cousin of mine sent me a DVD of old family home movies from the 30s.. It's
obvious from looking at the DVD that the original conversion was done from film
to VHS and my cousin then converted it to DVD. I'd like to bring it into ae so
that I can zoom in a bit and get rid of the garbage around the edges and
perhaps do some looping tricks.

I have an old Mac running 10.6 that I keep around so that I can run vintage
applications like MPEG stream. Clip. I can use MPEG stream Clip to convert the
DVD files to QuickTime, move them to my modern machine, and import them into
ae. what I am trying to figure out is

1. what is the best export setting to use in MPEG stream clip.
2. what is the best interpret footage setting to use when I import
QuickTime files into ae.

anybody got any ideas before I just bash around. thanks.

Hi

I posted a new album of selected recent sketches to Flickr at

This album contains sketches that I completed in October and November. I've got
to catch up on my scanning so I can add my most recent work.

My style continues to evolve, as I have been working more and more with
pastels. I have not yet scanned a lot of my recent work, but you can see some
of my pastel work in this batch. I like to quickly build layers of texture by
rapidly rubbing the side of an unwrapped pastel against the paper -- a messy

[Frameworks] Performances at Dr. Ts salon December 10 and 13th

2015-12-07 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi

I'm doing video performances at Dr T's salon ( a.k.a. my apartment) on
Thursday, December 10 and Sunday, December 13 with some excellent collaborators.

Thursday, December 10 at 8 PM

Dr. T video improvisations, Forbes Graham trumpet, John Voigt bass and spoken
word.

I did my first mixed-media performances with John in 1973 – he continues to
be a ( moving) fixture on the Boston Jazz and improv scene.
I have known and collaborated with Forbes for many years now – he was an
amazing trumpet player when I met him and he keeps getting better.

Sunday, December 13 at 7 PM

 Dr. T video improvisations
Tsuyoshi Honjo - saxophone and doduck ( no,I don't know what a doduck is
either)
Dave Bryant - synthesizer
Karen Klein – spoken word
Neil Leonard - saxophone

Dave is a long time collaborator best known for performing in Ornette
Coleman's Prime Time band.
Neil is an even longer time collaborator – back when I did electronic music,
Neil and I recorded and jammed frequently at my apartment in Newton and my
rented house in Lexington.
Tsuyoshi is a more recent collaborator. He has a DMA ( Doctor in Musical Art)
in saxophone from Boston University. His improvisations are anything but
academic.
Karen is also a recent collaborator. She improvises spoken word using excerpts
from prewritten poetry and poetry that she makes up on the spot. She also has a
doctorate - a PhD from Columbia in Literature.

with Neil and Tsuyoshi on the bill, saxophone sparks are sure to fly,

The salon is at

[Frameworks] Visual Music Live at Dr. T's salon, October 18

2015-10-11 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

The first event in what I hope to be a series of visual music live concerts at
Dr. T salon (a.k.a. my apartment) is going to happen on Sunday, October 18 at
7:30 PM. These performances will combine my video improvisations shown on two
widescreen TVs, with improvised music by one or two players. Some of the shows,
including this one, who also include improvised spoken word.

The first show of the series will have Tom Plsek, trombone, John Voigt, bass
and spoken word and Karen Klein spoken word. I'm delighted to have Tom and John
join me, as I did my first mixed-media improvisations with a group of John's
that included Tom back in 1973.

Karen is much more recent collaborator, who performed spoken word at a lot of
my Light Into Motion events at Outpost 186. Once I get the logistic kinks
worked out, I'm going to try to schedule about two of these a month.

These events will be free, although 5 or $10 donation would be appreciated, so
I can give the musician something for change. I'll have chips and salsa to
snack on- there is no need to bring anything unless you want to, as I want the
focus to be on the performance.

My apartment is at 382 mass ave, apt 803 In Arlington MA, a few blocks east of
Arlington Center. There is generally ample parking available on mass Ave in
front of or not too far from the building. My phone is 781 439 5314. I hope
some of you can make it. RSVP if you can or just show up.

For those of you haven't don't know about Dr. T's salon, it is a series of
art – related events that I hold at my apartment to encourage conviviality and
artistic sharing. These include a textured percussion jam, an art book
sharing group, a sketching group and the visual music live concert series. Send
me an email if you would like to get notices about all of the salon events
described below.

A textured percussion jam is sort of like a drum circle but much much quieter
and with a focus on intense listening and meditative playing. I have lots of
fun percussion instruments so there is no need to bring any. All skill levels
welcome, and you are welcome to just listen if you're feeling shy. We order
Thai food delivered before the jam. Those of us want to help choose the menu
arrive at 630. We get the food sometime between 730 and 8, eat and chat until
around 845 and then play.

The art book sharing group gives me an opportunity to share my large collection
of art books, and to look at them and discuss them. They may or may not be a
theme for the evening. Either way, I'll pick out a bunch of books to start the
discussion. Attendees are of course welcome to bring art books they wish to
share. We have had three of these and they've all been successful. So far,
these been on Sunday nights at 730. I don't have food at these because art book
viewing and food don't go together very well.

The nascent sketching group is a chance for us to share the process of
sketching, and perhaps make some improvised sketches as a group. It has not
yet met – my original thought was to have it on Saturday afternoons so that we
can move the event to Spy Pond Park if the weather is nice, but the warm
weather is fading fast, so I will probably have it in the evening.

[Frameworks] More abstract sketches posted

2015-10-07 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

I posted a new album of selected recent sketches to Flickr at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157659114697660/

This album contains sketches that I completed since August 25 . My style has
evolved considerably since then, as I have added oil pastels, several kinds of
pencils and a couple of other kinds of media to the mix, experimented with
different kinds of paper, and played around with blending and wash techniques.

The sketches have thus become much more complex and textured. I am not sure if
this is good, bad, or just different. for me it seems like a natural
evolution. I What started out as therapeutic (for myself) has become a serious
artistic investigation. I can't say that I fully understand what I'm doing – it
sometimes feels that I am channeling every abstract painter I've ever enjoyed.
The complexity does make the work less relaxing, but once you start on a path
you need to continue it as long as it seems fruitful.

I'm curious to hear which album viewers prefer.

You may have to zoom in on your computer monitor to see all of the textual
details in these sketches.

[Frameworks] "Water Dance" and "And Always"Videos posted to You Tube

2015-05-19 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi

I posted two new videos to You Tube, Water Dance Water Dance 05 09 15 003 and
And Always And Always 05 09 15 004 .

My "Light into Motion" series combines improvised video, music, movement and
spoken word. I usually do video mixing, but occasionally get up and dance,
leaving one or two of my 'Mix DVDs' running. In the past, I would choose the
video from whatever disks I happened to be mixing.

For my April 26 show, I decided to make a DVD specifically to create a
structure for my dance. I chose water for my structure, and the video for
"Water Dance" is a simple sequence of unprocessed water clips. I did two dance
duets with Rachel Zwiebel (one of my favorite partners at Dance Freedom") and
they were great fun, but I did not get good recordings. I decided to include
"Water Dance" or a similar structure in future shows.

For my May 9 show, I performed "Water Dance" as a duet with Reme Gold, another
frequent dance partner. Tim Mungenast -- guitar, Honjo Tsuyoshi -- saxophone,
and Karen Klein -- spoken word rounded out the ensemble for this piece.

"And Always" is an epic improvisation that closed out the May 9 "Light into
Motion" show. The title comes from Karen and Anne's spoke word improv. The
performers were

Doctor T -- video
Tim Mungenast -- guitar
Honjo Tsuyoshi -- saxophone
Karen Klein -- spoken word and movement
Anne Tolbert -- spoken word and movement
Reme Gold -- movement

The pieces were performed at Outpost 186, Cambridge MA.

[Frameworks] Snowmation Meditation Video posted to You Tube

2015-05-07 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

Snowmation Meditation is a silent video created by animating some of my many
snow photos from this past winter. The video can be seen at

[Frameworks] And it Stoned Me -- Spy Pond 05.04.15 album on Flickr

2015-05-04 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

I uploaded the Flickr album

And it Stoned Me -- Spy Pond 05.04.15 which can be seen at

https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157651957900430/

"Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
…
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like Jelly Roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goin' home
And it stoned me"

 Van Morrison

If you go out the back door of my building and walk two blocks, you get to Spy
Pond, a lovely oasis in the middle of Arlington. I have resolved to spend more
time there than I did last year, so after shopping and some other business I
walked down to the pond at around 6:30.

It was a bright sunny day and the sun was beginning to set over the pond, which
was being stirred up by a brisk but pleasant wind. The trees were just
beginning to bud and there was a sculpture exhibit in the park. Unlike the
singer in the song quoted above, I was high and dry, but I was reveling in the
beauty in front of me, and my feelings matched the feelings i get when
listening or dancing to the song.

I wouldn't categorize the pictures I took as among my very best, but I hope
they evoke some of the feeling of a special hour by the pond.

[Frameworks] New photo essay posted to flickr

2015-03-30 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

I just posted a new photo album, "Glass Bricks at Harvard" to flickr at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157651248971089

Glass brick walls make excellent photo subjects. The symmetrical pattern of the
bricks plays off of the distorted images of the other side of the wall, which
vary from brick to brick and change as you move your head or camera.

On March 15, I went with my friend Eva Arnott (seen about halfway through the
set) to the Harvard Art Museums. We stopped at the Carpenter Center along the
way, and took these pictures. I could have taken a lot more, but we wanted to
have enough time at the museum.

[Frameworks] March 14 Videos posted to You Tube

2015-03-21 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi

I posted videos from the March 14 Light into Motion performance to YouTube at ►
Play all or http://www.youtube.com/Tobenfeld

These videos are from the March 14 performance of "Light into Motion" at
Outpost 186, which felt to me to be the most cohesive of the series. My video
included a lot of sequences made from stills taken after our recent storms. See
"After the Snow" on my Flickr site to see some of the stills.

Personnel were:

Doctor T -- video
Eric Crawley -- Harpejji and Cajon
Honjo Tsuyoshi -- saxophone
Eric Zinman -- synthesizer
Karen Klein -- Poetry and movement
Reme Gold -- Movement
Leslie Lawrence -- Movement

The video recordings have some imperfections -- its hard to perform and be
cameraman in the same show! The first two, and to some extent the third, focus
too much on my video and not enough on the dancers. The fifth one has a black
section where one of the dancers was picking up a DVD player that had fallen
off my table, and blocking the projection. All of these videos are unedited and
have extraneous chit-chat at the start.

Thanks to all who performed with me. I hope that you will enjoy the videos
despite the imperfections.

The next Light into Motion is on April 26 and will feature John Voigt's
fast-paced beat poetics along with Karen's more laid back poetics. You can be
part of it -- come dance with us.

[Frameworks] Updated After the Snow 2015 photo essay posted to flickr

2015-02-07 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

There was another big storm brewing as I posted the original "After the Snow"
pix. By Tuesday, the snow had stopped, the sun had come out and it was
bitterly cold. I took a bunch of pix of and over the balcony, shooting from the
comfort of my apartment.

On Friday, I returned from an appointment and was pleasantly surprised to find
the sun out, the sidewalk clear, and the temperature reasonably comfortable, so
I took yet more pix.

I have added selections from these shoots to the original essay. The essay can
be seen at https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157650608337002

[Frameworks] After the Snow 2015 photo essay posted to flickr

2015-02-02 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
Hi,

I posted a new photo essay called "After the Snow 2015" on flickr at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157650608337002/

As all of my Boston friends know, we had quite a storm last week. After the
storm was over and the sun came out, I took some pictures. On Thursday, I
brought my camera with me to my physical therapist on Mill Street in Arlington,
and then to Whole Foods on Mass Ave. On Saturday, I was doing routine household
tasks when I glanced at my balcony and saw irresistible patterns of light and
shadow on the snow. On Sunday afternoon, I went to a dance called Nectar in
Central Square, Cambridge, and took some pictures of much dirtier snow before
and after, and a couple of pix out the window of the dance studio.

This photo essay consists of selections from these photo shoots. It looks to be
a snowy winter (we had another storm today) and I expect to be adding to to it
during the weeks ahead.

Enjoy, and stay warm-:)

[Frameworks] Flowers for the New Year -- photo album on flicker,

Hi,

I just posted a photo album "Arlington Flowers 2014" to flickr at
https://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157649696781448/ Enjoy and
Happy New Year.

I moved to Mass Ave in Arlington Center in March of 2014 so that I could lead a
car-free life style. Arlington is a suburb just northwest of Boston and my
location has excellent bus service.

They grow a lot of flowers along Mass Ave, in front of private homes,
developments, stores and on public plots maintained by garden clubs. The
flowers are all close to the sidewalk, allowing easy access for photography. I
always carry a camera with me, and a lot of these shots were taken while on
other errands. There are also nice flower gardens on Pond Lane, which goes from
the side of my building to Spy Pond, a lovely little lake 2 blocks from my
house.

The great majority (possibly all) of these pictures were taken in Arlington.
The first 3 also include my nephew Josh, his wife Eve, and their daughter
Phoenix.

2014-05-16 Thread Emile Tobenfeld
I posted two new videos to You Tube -- they can be seen at
http://youtu.be/rhmY9OEEONc and http://youtu.be/QTaDGiYTfPQ

"Don't Look at Me That Way" and "By Ones and Twos" were recorded on May 10th at
the fifth of my "Light into Motion" events, which are held at Outpost 186, near
Inman Square in Cambridge Mass. These events combine improvised video, music,
movement, and sometimes spoken word. The collective personnel for this
performance were:

Doctor T - Video and Movement
Eric Crawley -- Harpejji and Electronics
Cullan Powers -- Movement
Tracy Simonelli -- movement
Christy Choi --- Movement
Reme Gold --- Movement
Leslie Lawrence --- Movement

Combining this many creative elements in the intimate space of Outpost 186 has
been really exciting and fine for all of the artists. The next event in the
series is on June 15 and will feature my video, the amazing improvised poetry
of Karen Klein, music by Eric Crawley and Tim Mungenast, spoken word and
movement by Anne Tolbert, and other dancers t.b.a.

"Don't Look at Me That Way" is an unstructured improvisation and gets its title
from the intense facial expressions of the dancers. Dancers in order of
appearance -- Leslie, Reme, Cullan.

"By Ones and Twos" is a structured improvisation alternating between solos and
duets. Dancers in order of appearance -- Tracy, Reme, Christy, Cullan, Leslie.

skyscrapers increased the possibilities for repetition, because of the larger
scale of the buildings. The modern style, for better or worse (I would say some
of each), accentuates the repetition because of its use of simple forms and
symmetry.

The use of reflective material such as glass and stainless steel further
accentuates the sense of repetition. I find this fascinating–the way behemoth
buildings seem to interact with each other through reflection presents me with
some of my favorite photo subjects.

Almost all the images in this photo essay are of architecture that uses
repetition, and all have some kind of rhythmic element to them.

I love natural forms.but I also love man-made forms. I do not consider one to
be essentially more beautiful than the other, for at the bottom of things man
is a part of nature, and so everything man-made can be thought of as being
natural!

I hope this photo essay makes you more sensitive to the beauty to be found in
the urban environment.

I posted two new videos to You Tube -- they can be se at

http://youtu.be/5EFiCbmlO9Q

"A Bird in the Hand" and "Dancing Across TIme" are excerpts from the fourth of
my "Light into Motion" events, which are held at Outpost 186, near Inman Square
in Cambridge Mass. These events combine improvised video, music, movement, and
sometimes spoken word. The collective personnel for this performance were:

Doctor T - Video and Movement
Tim Mungenast -- guitar
Michael Knoblach -- percussion
Tracy Simonelli -- movement
Nicole BIndler -- prerecorded movement

Combining this many creative elements in the intimate space of Outpost 186 has
been really exciting and fine for all of the artists. The next event in the
series is on May 10 and we need more dancers.

The format is part performance and part workshop, and dancers with any amount
of improvisation experience are welcome to join us. Email me at

[Frameworks] "Dances with Birds" video on You Tube

2013-06-05 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)

Hi folks,

I've posted the video "Dances with Birds" on You Tube at
http://youtu.be/OFNT6pdzdo8

" Dances with Birds" is an excerpt from one of my moving with the
light dance jams that I produce at 119 Gallery in Lowell Mass. These
events combines my video improvisations, improvised music, and an
open environment for improvised dancing. It brings together my worlds
of video improvisation, music improvisation, and participatory dance.

When these events work best, the dancers become performers
interacting with the projected imagery as well as each other and the
music.

The recording was made with a static camera shot taken with a Lumix
LX 7 sitting on my mixing table.

[Frameworks] Architectural Rhythms Photo Essay on Flickr

Hi

Architectural Rhythms

Repetition has been a part of architecture throughout the ages. The

[Frameworks] Photo Essay on Flickr

2013-03-21 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)

Hi folks,

I have a new photo sequence on Flickr.

A selection of images on display (sumptuous 12 x 22 prints) at my
show "Light and Motion -- Photography and VIdeo" on view at 119
Gallery in Lowell, MA through April 13. The reception is March 24,
from 3 to 6 PM,< to be followed by a concert and jam session with Tim
Mungenast at 7:30.

Time exposures that turn moving lights into streaks are a staple of
night photography. Time exposures in which the camera is moving
instead of (or in addition to) the lights are less common. I have
experimented with this technique since I started doing serious
photography in 1970. It was not very practical in the days of film
because I got no immediate feedback and had to pay for every shot.

When I use this technique with a digital camera, I get immediate
feedback on the results of my last shot, and the only cost is the
time it takes to evaluate the images. The prints on exhibit here were
taken with Lumix LX3 and LX7 cameras, which are very compact and have
high-quality Leica lenses. The compactness of the cameras makes it
easy to whip them around at high speeds, enhancing the motion
effects. The LX 7 is more advanced, but the LX 3 gives me immediate
feedback when I use the camera in unlimited burst mode.

Most of the prints on display are one second time exposures, taken
with the LX 3 in unlimited burst mode, which gives me approximately
one picture a second. I get to look at each picture for a fraction of
a second, which allows me to improvise further camera moves in
reaction to what I have just taken. This adds to the improvisational
feeling of the work. I think of the process as a combination of
photography, dancing, and action painting photographic version of
Action Painting.

I call the photos I take using this technique "Swirlies".

Aesthetically, both hands wave wildly in the air. (Castro Street was
a major inspiration, especially when I did super 8 with Fuji cameras
that allowed rewinding for in-camera compositing)

Ahh -- those were the days -- shooting montage shots over previously
undeveloped film -- carrying a notebook around listing what was on
each cassette in my camera bag, not being able to afford to make
safety copies so the originals would deteriorate every time I viewed
them.

I would describe the process to my musician friends as "Imagine if
you had to keep feeding money into your sax every few minutes to get
it to keep playing."

However, my current medium of choice is video, and my montage tools
of choice are After FX (in studio), and 4 DVD plays and a V4 mixer
when improvising live.

Judge for your self at http://www.youtube.com/Tobenfeld

If you telecine your movie and put it on You Tube I promise to watch it.

is either purely cinematic, abstract, or just generally lyrical and
poetic, visually speaking?

I'm 30 and I spent 3 years and 10,000 dollars making a really
ambitious and stylized abstract 16mm movie called "PALMS", it's a
serious piece of work that I think is worthy of following in the
tradition of what I feel are the truly great non-narrative cinematic
artists such as Will Hindle, Ed Emshwiller, James Whitney, Pat
O'Neill, Jordan Belson, Scott Bartlett, Bruce Baillie, Maya Deren,
Slavko Vorkapich, and Dziga Vertov, among others.

Are other people out there, particularly people younger than 50 and
currently active, who are also passionate and excited by the work of
all these great cinematic artists and are committed to working on
celluloid? The last 3 years have been a struggle for me to make
another movie and to get my 1st one even seen by anyone. and i also
just haven't been able to find people who share my love of cinematic
technique and will share it in any way, such as emailing or
talking to each other about great shots and montages and optical
techniques or sound design techniques in the brilliant movies by
these artists.

That kind of community and sharing is i feel necessary, even if only
between a few people, and it's sad when we're so alone in our
struggling and hard work. The only current 16mm moviemakers I know
that are similar to me in any way are Timoleon Wilkins and Mark
Toscano and they are unfortunately inaccessible for various reasons.
I can't see their work or stay in touch with them as friends or even
associates.

Especially nowadays with all these faster, easier, and cheaper ways
of communicating around the whole world such as the internet and
cell phones, it's amazing how it seems like most people are if
anything more reluctant and difficult about staying in touch and
enjoying community and fellowship.

I know that maybe there are some really great cinematic-celluloid
artists working today out there who just make their work for
themselves and don't really show it and don't desire to know other
cinema enthusiasts. In a way I can understand wanting to be like
that and maybe nowadays it's the only way to be. I might get like
that too but right now I would welcome the interest and association
of serious people whom love what I love and, as my mentor the great
Bruce Baillie would say, want to be human to each other about it.

I think there is an important distinction between trippy and drugged.
"Drugstore Cowboy and Sid and Nancy I'd call drugged but not trippy.

Puff N Stuff has been mentioned so I'll include my reference to the
"Mr. Show" episode that puts the Sid and Marty Croft man in a suit
Saturday morning kids shows into a proper context, i.e., Lidsville,

If your looking for more transgressive depictions of
drug/underground culture then look into the films of Richard Kern
and the other Transgressive filmmakers, "Right Side of My Brain" and
others from his canon might help.

others:

"Rivers Edge" - weed/booze/speed/narcotics
"Quadrophenia - speed/booze/weed
"Dogstar Man" certainly looks druggy
"What We Do is Secret" - Germs/Darby Crash biopic heroin/speed/weed/booze
"Sid and Nancy" - you name it
"Martin" - vampirism as drug addiction - George Romero
"Addiction" (also vampirism as drug addiction) , "Bad Lieutenant" -
Abel Ferrara
Loads of goofy getting it ridiculously wrong drug stuff in the old
cop show "Adam-12."

Thats a pretty disparate group I've listed but hope it helps in some way.

and "One Dark Night I Left My Silent House," a duet album with
pianist Marilyn Crispell, called "une petite miracle" by Le Monde and
named by The Village Voice one of the ten best CDs of 2010.
Rothenberg is the author of Why Birds Sing, book and CD, published
in seven languages and the subject of a BBC television documentary.
He is also the author of numerous other books on music, art, and
nature, including Thousand Mile Song, about making music with whales,

[Frameworks] "Remembering Marya" video on You Tube

2013-01-02 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted another video on You Tube at http://youtu.be/563TK6ks7tA
-- please excuse cross postings --- many of you are on more than one
of my lists.

"Remembering Marya" is a tribute to my late wife (and companion of 23
1/2 years) Marya Wolfman. I think of it as a visual celebration of a
life well-lived, but all too finite.

The piece is an animated collage of still images of Marya. I took
most of the images taken since I met Marya. Marya's brother Steve
provided most of the archival images, and there are some additional
contribution from friends and other relatives. The soundtrack is
taken from performances at a remembrance ceremony held for Marya on
September 23, 2012. Deepest thanks to the friends and relatives who
organized and participated in the event.

This piece is obviously quite different from any of the other work on
my You Tube site. It presented unique challenges, both emotionally
and aesthetically. I hope this piece brings back good memories for
those who knew Marya, and provides a sense of her spirit for those
who did not.

movement, music, and video interact as equals -- each responding to
and respectful of the others.

Eric Crawley-- Harpejji (Sounds as beautiful as it looks at
http://www.marcodi.com/sights-sounds/pictures/)

has a movement--friendly hardwood floor.

[Frameworks] Meditation in Blue -- new piece on You Tube

2012-08-18 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

"Meditation on Blue" (http://youtu.be/bmGZ5vWu8HE) is the simplest
piece I have ever posted. One sequence, one filter, no music, and (to
me, at least) a certain magic. It is one of those happy accidents
that can bless the artist who is attentive enough to notice them. I
was working on some material to use in my live mixing performances,
and had made a six minute sequence of symmetrized video from two
shots of trees over and reflected in water.

I often take these sequences make make variants of them for mixing by
applying different filters to the entire sequence, and putting the
versions that I like on the same DVD as the original for use in
performance. When I do this, I am not attempting to make finished
pieces.

In this case, one of the sequences particularly caught my eye. I
looked closely at it, and decided that it was a complete piece in its
own right and didn't even need a soundtrack.

You can watch it in silence or with any music that is expansive and
not aggressive -- such as Indian Classical Music, Bach, or any kind
of (relatively quiet) improvised music. Enjoy, and please let me know
what you think of the pieces.

2012-07-23 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I had the good fortune to attend three days of the Vision Festival in
New York this past June, and took a lot of photos, mostly abstracts
inspired by the wonderful improvised music. I use a camera motion
technique to create these abstracts (which I call 'Swirlies'), and
think of them as a photographic form of action painting.

I hope some of the feeling, energy, and expansiveness of the music
can be seen in these images, which can be seen at

[Frameworks] New videos on You Tube

2012-06-24 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted two new videos on You Tube --

"Pulsation with Unheard Voice"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XiTU2pg7Lois an improvisation taken
from AHNE 2012. AHNE (Analog Heaven Northeast) is an annual gathering
of analog synthesizer enthusiasts put on by my friend and long time
collaborator Eric Crawley. An afternoon demo session is followed by
an evening jam, and I have had the pleasure of adding video
improvisation to the jam session for the past few years,

"Pulsation with Unheard Voice" was performed by Doctor T, Video
Mixing, Eric Crawley and Paul Lord, synthesizers, and Mike and Linda
Bullock video synthesizer. The title is an indirect reference to a
video sequence of a woman talking into a headset that I obtained from
a stock video tape and used heavily in this piece.

"Spaces" (http://youtu.be/EmkMkaUWGLI) is another improvisation taken
from AHNE 2012.
"Spaces" was performed by Doctor T, Video Mixing, and Eric Crawley,
Paul Lord, Mike and Linda Bullock, Bob Chidlaw, and Kyle Jarger
synthesizers.

2012-03-22 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted another video on You Tube -- at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TyE77gRL87g

"Seen and Not Seen" is an improvisation performed at 119 Gallery in
Lowell, MA on Jan. 20, 2012, with Joe Burgio, Betty Wang - movement,
Glynis Lomon - cello, voice, Junko Simons - cello and Kit Demos -
double bass

You can't see the dancing in the video, but it does contain a lot of
prerecorded movement by Joe Burgio

[Frameworks] "Some Artful Noise: New video on You Tube

2012-03-12 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted another video on You Tube at http://youtu.be/hJ4w6-7iaqg

"Some Artful Noise" is an improvisation performed at 119 Gallery in
Lowell, MA on Jan. 20, 2012, with Stephanie Lak - voice, guitar,
electronics and Walter Wright - electronics, drums.

"Music is organized sound" -- Edgard Varese.

Most music is organized around rhythm, melody and harmony, but some
music (often referred to as "Noise Music" by its creators) is
organized around texture, timbre, pure sound, and 'Noise'.
Improvising video to this music presents challenges in terms of
choice of material and visual phrasing.

"Some Artful Noise" is such an improvisation -- one that I thought
went particularly well.

[Frameworks] XFest video on You Tube "Unspoken Words"

2012-03-02 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted another video on You Tube at http://youtu.be/cQlcNDVUraY

"Unspoken Words" is an improvisation taken from XFest 2012. XFest is
an annual festival of improvisation curated by Walter Wright at 119
Gallery in Lowell, MA. Walter invites musicians, video artists,
dancers and from the Boston area and out-of-town, and groups them
in unique ensembles.

"Unspoken Words" was performed with Tom Hamilton - electronics, Andy
Allen - reeds, Flandrew Fleisenberg - drums, percussion, Junko Simons
- cello. The title is an indirect reference to a video sequence of a
woman talking into a headset that I obtained from a stock video tape.
Her words are unheard, rather than unspoken. (poetic license and all
that).

XFest ROCKS!

[Frameworks] OT: Programmable digital picture frames for installation use

2012-01-22 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

A couple of months ago, I got interested in using digital picture
frames to show my still images in gallery settings. I bought a Nix 15
inch screen - looks great but very hard to program, because it plays
the images in date order instead of the more sensible alphabetic
order. It also is limited in that it can change images every 3, 5, or
15 seconds, but nothing in-between.

I've been trying to research this on-line. All of the frames that I
can find documentation on either don't tell me or tell me the image
change choices are 3, 5 ,15.

If any of you have worked with a digital frame of any size and found
it possible to easily sequence a slide show with flexible change
rate, please let me know.

Thanks

[Frameworks] "Gong Show with Clouds: video on You Tube

2012-01-03 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted another video on You Tube at http://youtu.be/KQIDnSiZJaU

Gong Show with Clouds is the second piece in my
Improvisation/Construction series. These pieces combine video imagery
taken at a concert of improvised music. a live recording of the show,
and video from my library. The process is analogous to one of my live
performances, with the video edited and constructed in the studio
instead of live. I do not attempt to synchronize the concert footage
with the audio recordings -- preferring to let them coexist.

I knew that the Gong Orchestra would be very suitable for this
treatment, and I was fortunate to get a front row seat in a packed
house from which to shoot. I made a deliberate choice to limit my
'image palette' to imagery of clouds and images of the band.

The video is (to my eyes) very textured, mediative, and somewhat dark
and mysterious, which I think matches the feeling of the music. I'd
like to hear your opinion on how well this works for you.

[Frameworks] Broadmoor Reservation 12.22.11 Photo Essay on Flickr

2011-12-27 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I've posted a new photo essay (Broadmoor Reservation 12.22.11) on
Flickr at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157628600137569/

These photographs were taken shortly after the photos in my Railroad
Overpass, Medfield MA 12.22.11 essay, Broadmoor Reservation in South
Natick is run by the Audubon Society and is one of the most magically
beautiful places in the western suburbs of Boston. My route home that
day took me within a mile of Broadmoor, so I stopped there on my
return trip.

Broadmoor abounds with textures, reflections, shapes and shadows.
There is a boardwalk over the wetlands near the entrance, and most of
these photos were taken from that boardwalk.

its worth a mention.

[Frameworks] Photo Essay on Flickr

2011-12-23 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

I just posted a new photo essay Railroad Overpass, Medfield MA
12.23.11 at
http://www.flickr.com/photos/22231918@N06/sets/72157628533754333/

When I visit my primary care physician, I pass under an interesting
railroad overpass set in an other wise typical suburban neighborhood.
I've often thought it would be interesting to photograph.

When I visited her yesterday for my annual exam, I had my Lumix LX 3
in my pocket. It was as close to a perfect sky and light as one can
hope for,, and here are the results of the shoot. (Next year I'll
bring a DSLR with a long lens.)

[Frameworks] Doctor T, Jim Hobbs, Eric Rosenthal, Dave Bryant, Junko Simons Dec 16 Outpost 186

2011-12-14 Thread Emile Tobenfeld (a.k.a Dr. T)
Hi folks,

Visual Music LIVE continues at Outpost 186 on Friday at 8 PM. --
I'll be doing video improvisations with four superb musicians.

Solo: Dave Bryant, piano
Duet: Jim Hobbs, Alto, Eric Rosenthal, drums
Quartet: Dave, Jim, Eric plus Junko Simons, cello.

Dr. T -- Video Projections

My projections are produced by mixing multiple DVD sources a video
mixer and effects processors. The sources consist of
computer-manipulated original material derived from my still
photography and videography. The original subject matter is usually
recognizable, but sometimes processed to complete abstraction.
Sometimes the projections and music respond directly to each other --
sometimes they simply co-exist.
