Re: [Frameworks] Kodak new super 8 camera (was Logmar)

2017-01-10 Thread Fred Smith
Why is there even a space for a film cartridge? You could feed it into a
computer and skip the processing fee.

There are hundreds of S8 camera designs out there without this
electronic overcoat, why not use one of them?

I'm sure many of you already seen this, but just realized this poor
thing of a camera doesn't even have a reflex viewfinder, just a
digital one. I can only imagine how difficult it would be trying to
shoot in broad daylight without a tripod...

Also, the Logmar design
(http://www.pro8mm.com/super-8-cameras/logmar-super-8-camera/#features),
which apparently was bought by Kodak, had a real improvement in the
shape of a camera pressure plate (one has to pull some feet of film
out of the cartridge in order to thread it thru the camera), but Kodak
has discarded that feature
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cn-AwhYOHZE), resulting in a "hi
tech" digital body with the same flawed registration of a 1965 camera.

Kodak is advertising this under the slogan of an "Analogue
Renassaince". I hope their new Ektachrome is better than this camera...

Best to all,
Pablo Marín.

Re: [Frameworks] Super-8 refurb camera vendor?

Pro8mm of Burbank CA. sells a refurbished Canon 310 under the name
"Rhonda Cam". Cost is about $400. You get a rebuilt camera and a limited
warantee, something you can't really get any more. Plus they can repair
it if one breaks.

I would love any tips for better ways to find these than ebay. And I'm
not interested in the new Kodak ones that are digital & film at once.

Roger,

I briefly scanned my copy of "Making Kodak Film" by Robert L.
Shanebrook (highly recommended, I might add) and I don't see any
particular preparation to the increase adhesiveness. It says that
after the gelatin is applied, it is immediately cooled, so this may be
the trick to adhesion.

Cheers,

Re: [Frameworks] Did Kodak almost stop making all film?

2014-07-31 Thread Fred Smith
I've always wondered just how movie film is made. I remember a letter on
this site about a year ago where someone suggested building a smaller
machine. Can anyone recomend a site that explains the process?

Respectfully,

On 7/31/2014 2:49 PM, Sean Weitzel wrote:
The reason Kodak is so challenged to continue making film, is the
simple fact of the manufacturing process. Kodak has only manufactured
film on a massive scale. They don't have the means to produce small or
boutique runs of various stocks. (Side note: Did anyone see that Kodak
had some of their idled film coating lines up for sale on ebay
recently for basically scrap prices? the main coating wheel is 4
stories high). What is really going on is Kodak has to be able to
forecast how much film of a certain type will be sold. Once they have
that forecast, they manufacture and coat what is called a "master
roll" 54" wide and 5200 feet long. From that roll, all of the
individual gauges are cut and perforated and packaged, everything from
70mm down to super-8.

This is the reason you see so many stocks going into the discontinued
notices, or finish to order with absurd minimum quantities is because
of the need to be sure a master roll will be sold withing the
expiration period. What I believe has happened is the studios have
done just this, they've entered into a contract with Kodak to justify
Kodak coating more master rolls of the various color negative stocks.
Nothing has been said as to what the availability of other types of
stocks, such as black and white, recording film, print film, etc will
be. I fear some of these lower volume items will eventually go
discontinued as the prior master roll is used up.

There's a good more detail about the whole process here:

Hello,

My name is Adrian. I live in Austin, TX and I'm currently a student at my

cameras. Yesterday I pitched an idea to my two RTF professors about starting up
a club that's involved in investing in vintage film equipment for the RTF
students at ACC to have access to and start up an experimental film portion of
the RTF program. One professor absolutely loved the idea of having that aspect
as part of the RTF Program and deeply encouraged me to actually make this club
happen. But on the other hand my other professor gave me the harsh realities as
to why that would never work. Unfortunately I won't go into detail as to why
that wouldn't work, but I left his office with my head pointed to the sky
because I believe it can actually work. I mean why not right? My goal is learn
to how to use and know as much information about old Bolex cameras. I want film
to still be alive and used by students, regardless if they're from a community
college or not, to not only have on their résumé but as an amazing experience
as well. A student that diversifies themselves by having the experience of both
worlds would truly give them a wider perspective in the film industry. So Im
reaching out to anybody that is willing to give me a good starting point I
would most appreciate it! Please anybody! Thank you.

Re: [Frameworks] Optical Printing, Contact Printing and Rotoscoping Wizards NEEDED for space pirates claymation

2012-08-22 Thread Fred Smith
It all starts with your original footage. DO NOT SKIMP ON IT!!! Get the best
images you can. Use the finist grain film you can.

If you plan on using black screen for your mattes, I would suggest using the
alternate frontlit/backlit system, where you shoot one frame lit normally,
then the next frame (without moving anything or changing the camera
settings) backlit to provide the black matte, then get the roll skip
printed; Frame 1 on roll A, Frame 2 on roll B, Frame 3 on roll A, etc.
(Bluescreen was invented so mattes could be made without this step and cut
out one generation print). You gain a generation, but the mattes are much
more accurate.

My $0.02.

  Hi Everyone,

I'm considering mailing a camera and lenses (HD cam., 35mm lenses) across the
country for a shoot I'm working on, rather than renting when I get there. I
can get the package for free from the place where I work, so I will save quite
a bit of money, I think, and I'm working with a very small budget. If I decide
to go this route, what what should I use? UPS? FedEx? Something else?

Thanks for your help and advice.
