[Frameworks] Passing of Robert Darroll
Dear Frameworks, It is with sadness that I announce the passing of abstract animator and visual music artist, Robert Darroll. At the iotaCenter we have been big supporters of his work and are saddened my his passing. I got to know him a little bit from working on a DVD of his Korean Trilogy films. Both the iotaCenter and Mark Toscano at the Academy Film Archive are interested in finding a couple of his earlier films Cenit, Spiegelung, and Zeit to make sure they have a good home if they don't already. Please contact me if you have any leads. The first words that come to mind about Robert Darroll’s films are density and complexity -- of imagery, technique and style. He assimilates, transforms and transcends almost every technique in the history of animation. This is the apotheosis of motion graphics – simultaneously photographic, videographic and computer graphic. Darroll creates a hypnotic and visionary universe through virtuosic use of rotoscoping, compositing, layering, filtering and complex segmentations of the frame. Darroll understands that digital technology’s most important contribution to moving image art is the seamless merging of photographic and synthetic imagery, live action with animation. Organic figures are set against elegant geometric constructions, shot through with startling vectors and trajectories. Visual density is matched by sonic density. Darroll’s sound design evolves from the Theremin-like electronic score of Memb to dazzling multilayered blends of natural and synthetic sounds in later works. The earlier works show the influence of Oskar Fischinger, Viking Eggeling, Len Lye, Paul Glabicki, even a touch of Jordan Belson. But gradually he transcends them to give us the unique vision of a true master of his art. The films are ravishingly beautiful journeys through the corridors of an inspired imagination. -Gene Youngblood The DVD will be out soon and we're organizing screenings of his films, but I'll announce that at a more appropriate time. [Frameworks] 3-D Kuchar film
Hello filmmakers, This is a long and interesting story that needs an ending. And if you're interested in performing in a Kuchar film you could be that ending. *The Story:* A few years back the wonderful Ray Zone gave Mr. Mike Kuchar a 3-D camera as a gift and told him I just want to see what you would make with a camera like this. Mike shot a couple scenes, but eventually abandoned the project because the camera records on an SD card (Mike is only accustomed to film and tape based editing and owns no computer nor is interested in learning new technologies). Since that time Mr. Zone (and Mike's brother George) has left us, but I still want to make his dream of a 3-D Kuchar film come true. About a year ago Mike gave me the camera knowing that I am a filmmaker who works with 3-D imaging. Lucky for me the footage was still on the SD card. I have edited the footage and am working on finishing the film with Mike's blessing. However, I have come up against a snag. The footage Mike shot is incomplete and I've decided to add more scenes. In an effort to keep the film in the Kuchar tradition I would like to work with artists that are non-actors to complete the project. *Conclusion:* If you would be interested in helping me with this project as a performer please get in touch. I'm looking for people who do not consider themselves solely or primarily as actors. Your level of acting experience is not relevant, but if you are an artist, filmmaker, musician, writer, etc please contact me and we can discuss the details further. I am based in Oakland so preferably someone who is based, willing to travel here or is planning to visit sometime soon. As always, there is no budget for this production, but I promise you will have fun and look cool. Re: [Frameworks] publishing suggestions
Hello Bjorn, Thanks for your response. I didn't even think about some of the stuff you are suggesting. It's true that what I have written has a lot to do with my experiences, but there is an academic backbone interpreting the relationship between independent filmmaker and projectionist and how it became an antagonistic one. These days it is imperative for this relationship to be repaired because it adversely affects the life of film prints. What I have written is currently at 3800 words. I expect this could be beneficial to the experimental film crowd, but is much too long for an email. I'm also willing to amend the article if need be to fit certain criteria. Thanks again for your suggestions and other input is also welcome. Best, Huckleberry On Thu, Oct 31, 2013 at 12:48 AM, Lundgren 50lundg...@telia.com wrote: Hi! I don't have a budget, but I'm willing to spend a little to get them (but not enough to buy). Does anyone know where I can get some? Unfortunately, the Echo Park Film Center is closed for July and I can't rent from them. Much appreciated for the help. I'm looking for relevant filmmakers both past and present. So far I have Lotte Reiniger, Harry Smith, Stan VanDerBeek, Terry Gilliam, Larry Jordan, Lewis Klahr, Eric Patrick, Jodie Mack, Stacey Steers, and Leslie Supnet. I know there are many more. Any suggestions for filmmakers/films? Thanks! [Frameworks] frampton blu-ray
Hey all, just wondering if anyone has had a chance to check out the new hollis frampton blu-ray from criterion. I was really excited to get it the other day only to find out there's a weird bug with upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 with my DVD/BD player software. I have since downloaded other software and I've been able to play my other BDs, but still having problems with the Frampton disc and now I'm thinking there is a problem with the disc itself. I tried emailing Criterion to see if there have been any issues (I don't want to send it back unless I'm sure there's a problem). Unfortunetely, I don't have a BD player outside my computer and I'm not in the financial position to obtain one at the moment. Any comments would be helpful even if all you say is mine works perfectly. thanks in advance, Huck -- hypnotic visions - huckleberrylain.net ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks

Re: [Frameworks] Kuchar on the Oscars
I do have to admit that I cannot think of anyone else in the underground, experimental, avant-garde, what-ever-you-want-to-call-it filmmaking scene that has had more intense, wide reaching and personal influence then the Kuchar Brothers. Brakhage, too, but in a way his work still seems kind of distanced and separate from most regular cinema, movies if you will. Brakhage's work is closer to art then movies for me (not that I like to segregate or label in that way). George and Mike really influenced many generations of filmmakers and made them passionate about *making* films. Mike told me once that he met George Lucas and Lucas shook his hand and told him that he was a big fan of their work. Something about them really brought movie making down to a regular level and that empowered so many people. It's always great to hear about and I will miss George a lot. Because of this I think it would make more sense to give George and Mike extra recognition then anyone else I can think of within this.area, I guess you could say, of cinema. But hey, who am I? I sure as heck am not on the Academy list. Never made or worked on a movie that an Academy member even saw, probably... In all seriousness, am I the only one who finds the many posts in this thread a little bizarre? I thought it was nice when Brakhage was briefly acknowlwedged in the Oscar montage, and it's nice when other experimental filmmakers are acknowledged too. But when we start talking about awards, have we forgotten what the Oscars are, and what values they represent, and how different the values of avant-garde film are? Why should we expect, or even want, more than a passing nod from the Academy as it is currently constituted? It's really great that the money from the Oscar-cast goes to film preservation, including of avant-garde work. Is there any reason to expect more?
