[Frameworks] NOW! AGAIN!

2014-10-12 Thread Jonathan M. Hall
I think Frameworkers around the globe may have heard about the deeply
disturbing police violence in the United States. This chronic problem has
decades of history, but it received renewed media attention this summer
following another murder-by-police in Ferguson, Missouri. This weekend is a
Weekend of Resistance. Because of the timeliness of the issue, I hope
Frameworkers won't mind my forwarding this message from Travis Wilkerson with
an amazing vimeo link.

NOW! AGAIN! is a reenactment of a classic radical film, Now by Santiago
Alvarez, staged this summer in Ferguson, Missouri by the cops themselves.
Playing themselves, the cops reenact their own vicious history as if they were
checking their performance in a mirror shattered by gunfire. NOW! AGAIN! blows
up at the intersection of an avant-garde film act and an urgent manifesto for
militant action, demanding an end to police violence NOW!

Subject: [Frameworks] tableau vivante : experimental film and single frames

Hi,

I am researching a project of the use of the Tableau Vivant in experimental or
avant-garde filmmaking (history, theory, etc).
I am particularly interested in any examples of filmmakers that were
investigating the tableau vivant as a reference to a film frame and not to a
painting.
Also any sub themes that may relate to tableau vivant as a durational film
frame or living freeze frame, or a tableau vivant as a non-active scene/image
shot stop motion or frame by frame (in camera or optical printed).

Any suggestions for readings or names would be greatly appreciated!

best,
Rebekka

Dear Cindy

Thanks for the clarification.
It sounds like the CVM is the place to go!

What I saw at the ONE were video copies only--clearly as it's not a film
archive.
But, now I'll know not to pursue a deadend at USC.

Clarifications re recent William Moritz posts - Jonathan, only a small
collection of LGBT-related materials from Moritz's estate were donated to the
ONE archive, per his wishes. No experimental films were given to ONE. The USC
Library would not hold any rights for any Moritz films.

Regarding Adam's post on Moritz, while Moritz had a brief affiliation, he
definitely did not work at iota.

Dear Michael,

Moritz's estate was given in part to the ONE ARCHIVE in Los Angeles. It's one
of the largest gay and lesbian archives in the world, now owned by USC. When
I was there doing some work on Moritz, I was told that USC library may have
some Moritz films. I'd suggest contact either ONE for a reference or the
University of Southern California Library directly.

Does anyone on Frameworks know where to source a 16mm film print of William
Moritz's 'reconstruction' of Leger/Murphy's Ballet méchanique? It has a
soundtrack that attempts to provide a sense of Antheil's original score, and it
also has some colour tinting in some sections.

This version is on YouTube, and I've seen a VHS version, but would love to
access a print. I have already checked EYE, Lightcone, FMC, Canyon, MoMA, and
CVM.

Thanks!

Consideration of the relation between film journal and video letter would pay
off in spades, as it would allow you to consider medium specificity as well. I
think of the Japanese poet TANIKAWA Shuntaro and his video letters with

Hello Frameworks!

I may have the opportunity to teach a short workshop on the Film Journal genre

I would love some suggestions about major practitioners of this form throughout

I'm also interested in critical writing on the subject.

Besides Jonas Mekas, whose work should I be exploring?

Thanks very much!

a striking resemblance to the current Patriot Act-inspired activities of

Black Panther
14 minutes

This is the film the Black Panthers used to promote their cause. Shot in 1969,
in Oakland, San Francisco and Sacramento, this exemplar of 1960s activist
filmmaking traces the development of the Black Panther organization. In an
interview from jail, Minister of Defense Huey P. Newton describes the origins
of the Panther Party, Eldridge Cleaver explains the Panthers' appeal to the
Black community, and Chairman Bobby Seale enumerates the Panther 10-Point
Program as Panthers march and demonstrate.

San Francisco State: On Strike
20 minutes

Ethnic studies courses are common today, but that hasn't always been the case.
In many ways, multicultural education can be traced back to San Francisco in
1968-1969. In one of the most high-profile student actions of the 1960s,
students at San Francisco State University went on strike, shutting down the
campus for six months. University president S.I. Hayakawa called in the police,
who busted heads and arrested hundreds in an attempt to restore control of the
campus. But the strike didn't end until the school acceded to student demands
and created the first ethnic studies department at an American university. This
film, shot by the students and their allies, is a classic primary source
document of the 1960s.
