Re: [Frameworks] projector lubracant oil suggestions
Mostly geared toward 35mm but there are dedicated projector oils available from cinema suppliers: http://rsem.com/equipment-list.asp?search=true&quicksearch=projector+oil&submit=Go I use the Simplex oil (which for all I know is just re-branded automotive oil). All of which reminds me of the old joke: Q: How do you know when your Simplex needs oil? A: When it stops leaking. --Ed-Original Message- From: Huckleberry Lain Sent: Jan 24, 2014 2:10 PM To: Experimental Film Discussion List Subject: Re: [Frameworks] projector lubracant oil suggestions Awesome! Re: [Frameworks] projector lubracant oil suggestions
The Diplomat is that home movie projector I believe the main deal with that is to fill the oil cup with light (ISO 32) oil every time you use the projector. The zoom spout oil will be fine with that. I don't know about any other oil points, but that oil cup goes directly into a felt pad that oils the cam... if that pad goes dry the cam will not last long. I don't know anything about the Super-8 projectors. Service manual for the SL-0 should be somewhere on http://www.film-tech.com under warehouse and manuals. I have always avoided those slotload machines as well, but those projectors will probably have a dozen or so different oil points on them and possibly grease points as well; the service manual will tell you for sure. --scott ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
Re: [Frameworks] projector lubracant oil suggestions
Hello and thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately, I have and never had any manuals...but one of the projectors is a dual 8 variable speed and looks to be the 466A model. The other is a 16mm Filmo Diplomat with variable speed function as well possibly the 173 model. I also have an Eiki SL-O. I'll look for manuals online, but any suggestions on which projector I should feed 32 and which 68 would be great. Re: [Frameworks] projector lubracant oil suggestions
Which classic Bell and Howells? Most of them want "light machine oil" and "medium machine oil" which today we would call "ISO 32 turbine oil" and "ISO 68 turbine oil." That includes the Filmoarc and the 300-series machines with the oil cups on top of the gearbox. The 500-series B&H machines and 1500-series machines also require an instrument grease. Check the service manual for the projector and they will say. A good source for light machine oil is "Zoom Spout Oil" from Ace Hardware, which seems to be a pretty good grade of turbine oil. It will not turn into varnish and goo after a while like cheaper oils will. --scott ___ FrameWorks mailing list FrameWorks@jonasmekasfilms.com https://mailman-mail5.webfaction.com/listinfo/frameworks
[Frameworks] projector lubracant oil suggestions
Hello, Like many out there I have some wonderful old portable film projectors and I'm noticing that a couple of them need some projector oil. This will, in fact, be my first time replenishing it (I really don't use the projectors too often anymore). Looking on the internet I was having a difficult time finding the right oil type. Of course, I can easily find oil for a Century or Simplex, but I'm not sure if that will work correctly for my classic Bell & Howells. Suggestions?
