Re: [Frameworks] Independent research- looking for recommendations
Your request reminds me of a beautiful programme: 'The body in extremis', cured by Michael O' Pray, it was 1992, in Birmingham (GB), and for me it was maybe my first great immersion in experimetal cinema. I still have the leaflet (covered of tons of dust - cough cough). The titles screened were: Un chien andalou (Louis Bunuel) Pas de deux (Norman McLaren) Alone (Steve Dwoskin) Window water baby moving (Stan Brackage) Meditation on violenece (Maya Deren) Coalface (Alberto Cavalcanti) Chant d'amour (Jean Genet) Kiss film (Birgit and Wilheim Hein) Between (Claudia Schillinger) Imaginary II (Moira Sweeney) Descent of the Seductress (Jean Matthee) Fuses (Carolee Schneeman) The Ossuary (Jan Svankmajer) Upstair Inside (Kathleen Maitlaind-Carter) K (Jayne Parker) Reel III 16/67 (Kurt Kren) Dimension of Dialogue (Jan Svankmajer) The act of seeing with one's own eyes (Stan Brakhage) Mano destra (Cleo Uebelmann) Kali film (Birgit and Wilheim Hein) Le sexe enrage (Roland Lethelm). If you need it I can send you a pic of the program. good luck Livio 2020-01-25 18:49 GMT+01:00, Kornelia Boczkowska : > There are numerous avant-garde and experimental films concerned with > literal representations of the body and what you decide to incorporate > in your project depends on your particular methodological approach to > the study. > > You can start with consulting Ara Osterweil’s Flesh Cinema (2014), which > examines the corporeal turn in the 1960s American avant-garde film - the > notion of flesh cinema is mostly applied here to sexually explicit work > of Stan Brakhage, Yoko Ono, Barbara Rubin, Carolee Schneemann, Paul > Sharits or Andy Warhol. Re: [Frameworks] Independent research- looking for recommendations
There are numerous avant-garde and experimental films concerned with literal representations of the body and what you decide to incorporate in your project depends on your particular methodological approach to the study. You can start with consulting Ara Osterweil’s Flesh Cinema (2014), which examines the corporeal turn in the 1960s American avant-garde film - the notion of flesh cinema is mostly applied here to sexually explicit work of Stan Brakhage, Yoko Ono, Barbara Rubin, Carolee Schneemann, Paul Sharits or Andy Warhol. Another good reference is R. Bruce Elder’s A Body ofVision (1997), which discusses the work of such filmmakers as Bruce Conner, Stan Brakhage, Andrew Noren, Carolee Schneemann, James Broughton, etc. Besides, check out artists traditionally associated with the underground Cinema of Transgression, e.g. Nick Zedd, David Wojnarowicz, Richard Kern, Tessa Hughes-Freeland, Casandra Stark, Beth B., etc. Some other filmmakers that reflect on the body or bodily transformations/spectacles include MM Serra, Michael Wallin, Barbara Hammer, Jack Smith, Barbara Rubin (Christmas on Earth), George Kuchar (Hold Me While I’m Naked), Peggy Ahwesh and many others...
