[Freebooters-devel] flags and map

2004-05-31 Thread Esteban \"DdaY\" Fernandez

Hi

Been trying the game, hope it keeps developing till 1.0 :)

anyway, a couple of things :

1- the Spanish Flag should be changed, due to historical reasons, the
one you put in the game is the new one :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Flag

I think it was more like this :
http://www.flyinglab.com/pirates/review/showitem.php?item=282

I'm spanish but don't know exactly wich one is, I'm looking for it, I
try to keep you posted.

2 - Here (http://www.amarriner.com/bb/images/bottlemap.png) you have a
nice map of thE caribbean, from a pen&paper game, caribbe and all the
ports, it's from Avalon Hill (an old game) so "maybe" is accurate in a
historic point of view (also is nice for a game) :)

Maybe i try to paint a new ship for the game, no promises (anyway I'm
not really good at painting)

:)

Indeed, the current one is some kind of place holder. Later on, we'll
need several flags that change over the time.

Thanks, I guess a "historical correctness rating" of 92% is good enough :-)

We should have a look, whether we can find a similar map in the public
domain or repaint it. One of the design goals of Freebooters is to make
it 100% free software including the artwork which should be freely
distributable.

That's very useful. My current plan for the release after 0.2 is to
work on the game mechanics. For the 0.4 release the current map system
will be replaced with a freely navigatable map like the original "Pirates!".

Your help is very welcome. I guess the ship sprites should be raytraced
like the current one, otherwise it's too difficult to paint all the animation
phases (it's 36 sprites per ship!). It would be very good if Freebooters 0.3
had improved ship graphics that reflect the ship types.

Some thoughts:

Our sprite tiles are 70x70 pixels big. Every ship should have the
cannons visible on one side, so that the player can have a look
very to shoot to.

Basically we'll need five different boats:

1. Frigate
This should be the biggest ship with three sails. You can find a very
good sketch at the Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frigate
This is the best ship for fighting in the game, so it should be really
scary.

2. Brig
This is the second best fighting vessel in the game. It carries two
main sails. You can find a picture at
http://home.flash.net/~dadis/other/brig-04.jpg

3. Schooner
This is smaller than the brig and carries less weapons. It has two sails
as well. You can find a picture at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schooner

4. Galleon
This one is really big and carries the most cargo, but lacks cannons.
It should be really big. You can find a picture at:
http://members.icconn.net/~gedney/galleon.jpg

5. Merchant vessel
This is the same boat as the schooner, but without cannons.

Painted sprites will be very useful for the navigatable map later on
for things like little harbours on the map and such.

I'm currently working on improved menus for 0.2 and could use some
sprites for a kind of status bar as well. (Some kind of chest that
represents the player's gold and some kind of cargo boxes that represent
the current cargo load of the ship). Give it a try if you like.

Cheers,
 Moritz

Yeh, I know, i din't mean to ask to copy that, just to have a look..

Raytraced? You mean 3D models to make snaps of 2D sprites?

Umh. I can try to make some models in Blender if that should be useful,
Im not good at anything, not expert so if any of you is good at 3D or
painting tell me so I can save some hours ;)

My pixelart is a bit poor, but, http://www.pccable.es/images/chest.png

That size? smaller? I have a ready made barrel that size that with a
wooden box could do fine to cargo icon..

Ah! If you don't like it, tell me, my ego is not a problem :) Better
that than spend hours doing graphics for nothing .

I've added this to the TODO.

Yes, that's the way the current ship model has been made. Painting all 36
animation phases would be very difficult, especially to make them smooth.

Blender models would be very good; if it's an open format other can improve
it even more.

That looks nice, but it should be bigger. I've made a snapshot of the current
menu sidebar: http://www.tzi.de/~jmm/fb02menus.jpg
If the chest were about 70x70 to 80x80 pixels big, I'd remove the "Gold"
line and display the amount of gold onto the pixmap.
For "Cargo" a barrel would be very nice, for the crew we could use some
pirates and for food something very similar to food.

Moritz
