Hi Jiawei (付佳伟),

It's good to know those unofficial mirrors are accessible and that
https://mirrors.ustc.edu.cn/freebsd/ is available for Chinese FreeBSD
users as well.

I contacted the team that oversees our mirrors and they tentatively said
that if the regulatory hurdles could be overcome, an official Chinese
mirror is possible. If this is something that your group is interested
in and equipped to handle, perhaps we could discuss details off-list.

Thank you kindly,

Joe

Thanks Joe for looping me in - I CC'ed delphij@ (since the last CC was
not successful) and lwhsu@ (for further mirror-related questions).

I understand the hassle of trying to connect to an official mirror in
mainland China. As far as I know, there are a couple of usable
unofficial mirrors there (not an advice), including:

We also had extensive discussions about having official mirrors in
mainland China in the past, however, we have concluded that it is
currently not possible due to regulatory reasons - if anything
changes, we'd be happy to revisit this. For the maintainers of
unofficial mirrors, please feel free to let clusteradm@ know (and CC
me) if there is anything we can do to help improve your experience.

This is not true. As jrm@ pointed out, we have an official website and
document translation project in Simplified Chinese. Some of the
content is outdated, but the project is still active and can be
accessed in mainland China:

Anyone interested in contributing can simply register and start
translating on the following page:

You can contact me for any further questions related to document
translation, I am happy to provide any assistance for current and
future contributors.

Best,

Hello!

Thank for the update on the "FreeBSD Chinese Community". We certainly
appreciate any efforts to promote FreeBSD in China.

There are official Chinese translations of the main page, the Handbook,
and other documentation, however I am not able to gauge the quality.

https://www.freebsd.org/zh-cn/
https://docs.freebsd.org/zh-cn/books/handbook/

We welcome translation updates. For anyone able and interested in
contributing to documentation translation, here is a resource:
https://wiki.freebsd.org/Doc/Translation/Weblate

Are you saying that all these page are inaccessible from mainland China?

Apologies if past queries were missed about hosing a FreeBSD mirror site
at University of Science and Technology. We certainly care and if that
would improve the situation for Chinese users it's very welcome.

How can we help with that?

Joe
