The vesa driver can be run on most systems where the newer graphics are 
not directly supported.  See the last example here:

Unfortunately no, according to https://wiki.freebsd.org/Graphics the
Radeon HD 8000 'Sea Islands' series is not supported at all yet.

My understanding is that once i915 is upgraded to the equivalent of
Linux 3.8 things should start moving somewhat faster.

this option is unfortunately not available in "Video" (only display brightness 
can be set there in my BIOS).
