This was it! I went through 8 floppies before I found a decent pair,
these 3.5" things s*ck.

Another fun one is dd'ing the 2.88MB images to a 1.44 diskette and
being too tired to figure out what the #@$@#$@@# is going wrong while
shivering your butt off in the colo facility.

I will try that, it didn't occur to me to do that, since I've been running
that for a year or so now, without any problems.
