Re: is 4k desktop possible on freebsd-12?

2018-10-10 Thread Paul Pathiakis via freebsd-hardware
 Hi,
The HDMI 2.1 specification (need cables and ports at that level).  It goes to
10K (really) at 120 HZ.    I believe 1.4 supports 60 HZ but FPS tends to be
limited to 30 at 4K resolution.  (this is limit of my understanding at this
point)

problem is monitor only has HDMI. I'm not sure it'll 4k@30fps is an
acceptable mode for it; need to check

Fw: Dell EMC Boss on R7425

2019-07-19 Thread Paul Pathiakis via freebsd-hardware
Hi all,
I'm trying to see the NVME m.2 drives that are on a Dell R7425.  The UEFI/BIOS
sees the controller and the M.2 drives on it.  The controller is BOSS-S1 (??)

I'm on FreeNAS running 11.3 of FreeBSD.
I don't see the controller in dmesg, pciconf, or camcontrol.  :(
Does anyone know what the issue is? Is there no driver?  I read the forums and
it seems that this was addressed back in 2017.  Regression?  Nothing in pciconf
jumps out at me as being a disk controller (please point it out if you see
it)  Any other tools I can use to find this thing?

Re: Request for Recommendations: media / transcode server

2019-11-14 Thread Paul Pathiakis via freebsd-hardware
 Hi,
I used to have  a SuperMicro server board and, since I no longer require BMC,
I've replaced it with an ASUS B350 Prime board about 2 years ago.
I have a Ryzen 2600, a separate 2 port GbE card, and it has everything else you
have.
Outfitted like this, it's less than just a server board.  I have 3400G
processor (you could go even lower to the 2xxx series for less expense.
It's much cheaper to have Ryzen, non-ECC memory, desktop motherboard, etc. than
just buying a server class motherboard.
Server class will be 2-4x more.

 Hi all,

For a few years, I've known that my media server's motherboard[1] was
potentially vulnerable to a bricking issue[2]. It looks like that day has come.
:-/

Or it might just be "normal" old-age, since I've had the board for ~4.5 years.

Either way, I find myself in need of a new motherboard. My requirements are:

- 2C/4T amd64 (4C/8T preferred)
- 2x DDR4 slots (4x preferred)
- 6x SATA ports (8x preferred)
- 2x 1GbE NICs
- 1x 80mm M.2 slot (2x preferred, 110mm preferred)
- 1x PCIe x8 slot (2x preferred)
- BMC w/ dedicated NIC

Suggestions?

Thanks,

Ravi (rpokala@)

Re: DELL PowerEdge T130 - Devices detected as SATA

2020-07-13 Thread Paul Pathiakis via freebsd-hardware
 Hi,
I have a 'possibility'.  IF your CD/DVD are not plugged into SATA ports, do so.
Get them off this controller.  SAS will try to accommodate SATA but, depending
on the order of detection, it will 'step down' in speed.
Next, try putting all the SAS drives (do you have any?), on a separate
controller line.
If you have only SATA drives, put the SATA III, followed by SATA II, (any SATA
I ?) on the chain as detected.  I believe as SAS encounters devices, it will
allow transfers at the highest speed it encounters and step down as it goes.
This is all off the top of my head not having read SAS spec in a while and only
having SAS and M.2 drives now.
