I usually keep my ports up to date but I got a few days or weeks behind.
That could be part of my problem. I am and have been using portmaster to

portmaster is a wrapper around ports. Ports always use a package
management tool behind the scenes. It used to be the
pkg_create/pkg_add/pkg_info tools. Going forward it is pkg (if you have
 WITH_PKGNG=yes in make.conf).

I don't have WITH_PKGNG=yes in make.conf but I might have tried it at the
beginning.
Is that going to be catastrophic?

portmaster does support the old tools still and the new one.

 Did you previously run pkg2ng?

Very probable but not sure.

Did you add WITH_PKGNG=yes to your
make.conf? If so you cannot go backwards and there is no reason to do so.

I don't think so but over time I could have.

I have a vague recollection of something like that. I can't remember the
details but I just checked and find that I have
  /var/db/pkg/linux-f10-alsa-lib-1.0.21_1
  /var/db/pkg/linux-f10-alsa-plugins-oss-1.0.21_2 installed currently.

While trying to remove them I realized that they are/were required by
  skype-devel-2.2.0.35_1 that I use daily but . . . .

I assume that they need to go an give it another try. Maybe I can just
deinstall and then rebuild skype without breaking kde. Will know as soon
  as I get back.

You could check (with ldd or readelf) if libmediastreamer.so is actually
requiring symbols from those libraries (which would be
 weird).

It'd be good if you could try building kdenetwork4 with CMAKE_VERBOSE=1
and paste the line that's causing problems, as well as the CMake output
when it is detecting stuff before compilation.

Just before receiving the above email, I did a recursive erase of kde4 and
family, rebuilt all and much to my surprise, it all built cleanly. The
machine is across town si I will head over there in just a bit. I have now
doubt that it will work fine. Thanks for all the help and I apologize for
whatever I did or didn't do to cause the problem and appreciate your
patience and help that made me understand that I was dragging some legacy
garbage that had to be removed, principal probably being alsa conflicts.

I think if someone else has a similar problem that it is faster to erase
all related dependencies and rebuild. If your machine is fast you will
only loose the graphical interface for an hour or so. Now my problem is
going to be skype that requires linux-alsa. shouldn't conflict after the
fact, I hope.

Thanks again,

ed

Re: Seems like Chrome is having an issue with clang.

2012-05-30 Thread Edwin L. Culp W.
2012/5/30 Christoph Moench-Tegeder c...@burggraben.net

 ## Edwin L. Culp W. (edwinlc...@gmail.com):

Seems like Chrome is having an issue with clang. It starts with the
  following errors:

CC(target)

 out/Release/obj.target/skia_libtess/third_party/skia/third_party/glu/libtess/tess.o
  In file included from
  third_party/skia/src/opts/SkBitmapProcState_opts_SSSE3.cpp:8:
  /usr/include/clang/3.1/tmmintrin.h:28:2: error: SSSE3 instruction set
 not
  enabled
#error SSSE3 instruction set not enabled

SSSE3 is enabled by setting the right CPUTYPE (e.g. in make.conf, see
make.conf(5) and related documentation). THe default is safe for all
supported machines, so SSSE3 and some other extensions are not used
 by default.

Interesting and more than I understand. For example:

man make.conf I find:

CPUTYPE (str) Controls which processor should be targeted for
gen-
erated code. This controls processor-specific optimiza-
tions in certain code (currently only OpenSSL) as well as
modifying the value of CFLAGS and COPTFLAGS to contain
the
appropriate optimization directive to gcc(1). The auto-
matic setting of CFLAGS and COPTFLAGS may be overridden
using the NO_CPU_CFLAGS and NO_CPU_COPTFLAGS variables,
   respectively. Refer to /usr/share/examples/etc/make.conf
for a list of recognized CPUTYPE options.

in /usr/share/examples/etc/make.conf I find:

# The CPUTYPE variable controls which processor should be targeted for
# generated code. This controls processor-specific optimizations in
# certain code (currently only OpenSSL) as well as modifying the value
# of CFLAGS to contain the appropriate optimization directive to gcc.
# The automatic setting of CFLAGS may be overridden using the
# NO_CPU_CFLAGS variable below.
# Currently the following CPU types are recognized:
# Intel x86 architecture:
# (AMD CPUs) opteron-sse3 opteron athlon64-sse3 athlon64
athlon-mp
# athlon-xp athlon-4 athlon-tbird athlon k8-sse3 k8
# geode k6-3 k6-2 k6 k5

# Intel ia64 architecture: itanium2, itanium
# SPARC-V9 architecture: v9 (generic 64-bit V9), ultrasparc (default
#   if omitted), ultrasparc3

So I check my dmesg says:

FreeBSD 9.0-STABLE #160 r229960M: Sat May 26 05:08:37 CDT 2012

I'm sure one of the options in make.conf would probably work but I think
forgetting about Chrome is much easier and EMO not a big deal. I seldom us
it.

Thanks for the help. Sorry for the noise and for not being able to
translate between make.conf, and dmesg. Have a great day.

 Christoph

Re: Can't get hplip to work on HP LaserJet 1212nf MFP

2012-05-14 Thread Edwin L. Culp W.
2012/5/13 Thomas Mueller muelle...@insightbb.com

I built hplip from the ports on both the old and new computer, FreeBSD 8.2
i386 and 9.0 amd64 respectively, and can't get either of them to work,
 either on USB or Ethernet.

I commented out device ulpt in the kernel config file, but got No
devices found in the USB setup, even though the printer was recognized by
system messages and usbconfig. When I connected the printer on the new
computer via USB, ulpt.ko automatically loaded (how to prevent that?), but
I got the same No devices found even when ulpt.ko was renamed to ulpt2.ko
so it would not be found and loaded (a kludge).

The printer was found when connected by Ethernet, but the binary plugin
installation failed consistently, some complaint of /etc/issue or
 hp-plugin-install not found.

By way of comparison, I also built hplip3 from pkgsrc in NetBSD 5.1_STABLE
 amd64; this was actually pkgsrc-wip (http://pkgsrc-wip.sourceforge.net).
That was version 3.11.1. I got No devices found both with USB and
Ethernet; could still try again with Ethernet, getting the printer IP
address from either dmesg.boot or logging in to wireless router, though
 this is a slender chance.

hplip versions for FreeBSD are 3.11.1 on the old computer and 3.11.5 on
the new computer. I do intend to update my 9.0-STABLE installation on the
new computer and then portupgrade or portmaster this and other ports, but
fear more of the same frustration. Would I need to exclude ulpt module as
well as kernel config device ulpt line, or can ulpt.ko be prevented from
automatically loading, or would that make no difference?

Are HP printers especially recalcitrant to setting up, or especially
USB-quirky, as opposed to other brands such as Lexmark, Samsung, Brother,
 Xerox and Canon?

Other things I intend to try are with Wine; I also intend to try on Linux,
possibly on NetBSD if I can get that to install and run on the new
computer. Linux is home base for hplip and much or most other open-source
 (quasi-)Unix software.

weeks it hasn't worked and I've actually enjoyed the silence;) but someday
I need to get it going.

World and all ports are up to date and the skype configuration that may
 be different than default

  Video support not checked
  Audio is oss on all

The rest should be the same.

When I try to call I get an immediate call failed. Messages don't go
through and I never see a user on line. It almost seems like it isn't
connected but I don't see how. I also tried going back to the 2.1.0.81
version and the same problem. This must be something DUMB that I have done
 but . . . . .

 Thanks for any suggestions,

I have been trying to get more information by executing it on the command
line and see nothing, I finally checked log/messages and found:

Mar 16 14:14:47 home kernel: linux: pid 35294 (skype): syscall inotify_init

I have no idea what is not implemented nor why but at least maybe someone
else will. I haven't changed anything since it worked except keep

skype-devel-2.2.0.35

2012-03-14 Thread Edwin L. Culp W.
I am running 9.0-STABLE FreeBSD 9.0-STABLE #89 r229960M: Mon Mar 12
05:11:09 CST 2012 amd64. I am not a big skype user but the last couple of
weeks it hasn't worked and I've actually enjoyed the silence;) but someday
I need to get it going.

World and all ports are up to date and the skype configuration that may be
different than default

 Video support not checked
 Audio is oss on all

The rest should be the same.

When I try to call I get an immediate call failed. Messages don't go
through and I never see a user on line. It almost seems like it isn't
connected but I don't see how. I also tried going back to the 2.1.0.81
version and the same problem. This must be something DUMB that I have done
but . . . . .

Thanks for any suggestions,

ed

So where are the errors?  There are none in the output you posted.

I think there's no error (if it's the same problem as mine).

True. There is no error anywhere.

For me, the build process seems to stop/freeze randomly, most often
after Built target XXX. It affects only KDE ports, no other
qt4-qmake or cmake consumer. No CPU usage. No disk usage. No excessive
or changing memory usage... I didn't report it earlier because I don't
know how to debug this, and it did not seem to affect other users
 (until now).

Here is the workaround I painfully used on my 2 desktop machines :

 # cd /usr/ports/x11/kde4
 # make
 wait for a freeze...
 ^C
 # make
 wait for a freeze...
 ^C
 # make

I'm doing this and it is compiling. It never dawned on me to try
that. I have the bad habit of erasing everything re-suping and
trying again. I even blew away all my ports and started with a
totally new one. I then blew away everything built from kde4. Boy am
I dumb.

 ...
I maybe had to restart the build one or two hundred times to have a
 fully installed KDE4.

I've got this behavior since KDE 4.7.X (4.7.2 and 4.7.3), I had no
 problems building KDE 4.6.X.

I even tried deleting all ports, cleaning /usr/local, tried again. No
change. Tried compiling all ports with gcc instead of clang, no
change. Forced make jobs UNSAFE, no change.

I use FreeBSD 9.0 amd64, system built with clang (are you ?).

Yep. I don't understand why but. It is well on its way to building.

Thanks a bunch. You are a life saver. I started admining unix7
back in the early eighties with dumb terminals but now kde has me
happily spoiled.

# kldstat -m sem

If you get nothing you need to:

# kldload sem

then run
   # kldstat -m sem
and you will get something like:

That is pretty common.

I could sure use a way around the strange error I get when trying to update devel/apr on 7.4-STABLE FreeBSD

I posted this about 10 days ago but thought that it would be fixec
with portgrading but it hasn't and the error makes me think there is a
conflict with one of my ports that is out of date or . . . .?

This is the result of my make showconfig

/usr/ports/devel/apr1 # make showconfig

I originally had ldap enabled but removed it for doubts. I obviously

I would assume not because, I ereased firefox-devel from ports a few

the same version that I had in firefox-devel.

/usr/ports/www/firefox # cat distinfo

I checked and built from the new directory from svn shown above.

I don't think you have done something wrong ;-) But take a look at
this: Maybe you have the same issue?

No doubt. If that is going to be necessary, I think it would make
sense to upgrade to 8 stable or 9 current. And then reinstall my
ports. I should have done this some time ago but . . . . . lazy.

Thanks,

Re: Strange flash issue on Current 9.0 that I am not seeing on stable 7.3

2010-09-04 Thread Edwin L. Culp W.
Replying to myself. I found a work around and or an issue with
nspluginwrapper-devel nspluginwrapper-1.3.0_5. I simply did a
pkg_deinstall nspluginwrapper-1.3.0_5 and portmaster
www/nspluginwrapper and all is well. On my 7.3 installations
nspluginwrapper-devel works fine. I have no idea why but if someone
else has a similar problem, it might be a good idea to test the other.

Thanks,

ed
