Sunclock's map has Malaysia coloured like Thailand and the Jawa.

So, as long as nobody knows how to edit the map, it will stay like this
then.

I display the map of the globe. Each time zone gets a colour. The
colours repeat with distance but direct neighbours have always
different colours.

We first would have to get an idea of where to look. When showing the
map, Malaysia should share the colour with China. But it shares its
colour with Thailand an the western part of Indonesia.

Installing packaged firefox wants to install tesseract

2019-10-10 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I just was wondering what this game has to do with the browser:

pkg install firefox says:

New packages to be INSTALLED:
firefox: 69.0.2_1,1
kf5-kholidays: 5.62.0
opencv: 3.4.1_24
tesseract: 4.1.0_3
tesseract-data: 4.0.0
aom: 1.0.0.2474

Is this game really required to run a browser?

inkscape core dumps at start

Hi,

I tried to upgrade inkscape to version 0,92.3 first via ports

Does anybody have an idea what happened?

There are some other applications in the tree which do the same. So,

No, you have to open only one document in one windows. On a machine

The documents are small. Not more than 4KB, plain text, no

Do nothing but continue to open new windows and then open a single
document in them. I change also workspace between.

It just happens when the next window is opened. The text never appears
and the text in most other windows disappears. The windows with text
still visible in them are fully usable. I did not notice any limitations
in them.

When I tried the same thing on a machine with 8GB RAM, nothing
happened. It might will happen too when much more windows are opened.

Most important, on the machine with only 4GB, I can reproduce it 100%.

mousepad memory leak

2018-01-19 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

when I open more than nine or ten mousepads in parallel, I can still
use one or two of the open windows but the other mousepad windows start
to allocate memory until it is exhausted.

I am using FreeBSD 10.4 with mousepad 0.4.0 running under blackbox. It
is easy to reproduce by opening one mousepad window with one document
contained in one.

I am using mousepad on an older machine with only 4GB of RAM. On a
machine with more RAM, top looks like this after 12 mousepads have
been opened:

Swap: 16G Total, 1666M Used, 14G Free, 10% Inuse, 12K In

It is only one mousepad process eating up all the memory. It seems to
me random which of the mousepad processes can be used but this one
works normal while other do not react to any event. It stays then like
this until mousepad took all the swap space and RAM. It is not possible
to kill mousepad from blackbox but it is possible to kill mousepad from
top.

I know, it is a minor issue.

I just ran this after removing WRKDIRPREFIX from the environment.
Before I have been able to built firefox without WRKDIRPREFIX in the
same shell. The same error happens in a fresh shell. If it matters, I
believe that 37 was the last version I could built with WRKDIRPREFIX.

I have compiled more than 100 ports these days on the machine. All
others did not have a problem with WRKDIRPREFIX.

Hi,

I use WRKDIRPREFIX as a standard outside of jails. I could not compile

After removing WRKDIRPREFIX, it all worked as expected.

Hi,

I just wondered by the same makefile leads to different results. Here
is the output of a 'make clean' from two machines/jails using the same
ports tree:

Outside a jail:

===> Cleaning for gettext-runtime-0.19.4
===> Cleaning for indexinfo-0.2.3

===> Cleaning for joe-4.0,1

Does anybody know why it is like this?

Could they be put into a single file with a format like:

[/usr/ports/www/firefox]
descr="some text which can span
line"
distinfo="SHA256 (firefox-33.0.source.tar.bz2) =

It is a bit old fashioned but will fulfil the requirements but will add

Download does not restart for TeX/texlive-20140525-texmf.tar.xz

2014-10-19 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I have a problem with downloading this file:

http://distcache.FreeBSD.org/ports-distfiles/TeX/texlive-20140525-texmf.tar.xz

It is no problem at all to download the file in one go. As the size of
the file is pretty large, it is difficult for me to do so. After a
download is interrupted, the download restarts at the beginning.

I observed the proper restarting behaviour on other ports.

What could I do to find out why the restarting on this one file does
not work?

py-setuptools27 conflicts with itself

2014-10-07 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I just updated my ports tree a few minutes ago and tried to
install /usr/ports/devel/py-setuptools27

This is what I get:

===> Registering installation for py27-setuptools27-5.5.1

How can a port conflict with itself?

Should I deinstall it? I do not want to risk this without some kind of
confirmation.

Re: I want to upgrade an old (8.3-RC2) FReeBSD installation, but can't install subversion

2014-08-27 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I did not got through the full thread to see if you found a solution.

Allow me to tell you how I generally update multiple machines no matter
in what state they are in. If they are all on the same source version,
I compile on one machine the new kernel for the target machine. I will
install it them either via NFS on other machines or via bootable media
on which I copy the newly compiled source tree and the new binaries.

When the other machine is up, I go through the normal installation
procedure for kernel and world. Be careful with mergemaster and do not
overwrite some configuration files.

It might seems awkward but I did not run into any problems since I
moved to this procedure.

You might get first a generic kernel onto an external media and upgrade
to generic if you want before compiling the 'real thing' on the target
machine.

this is the reason why I am asking for versions on the ports tree since
a decade. Ok, we have the revision now. Just go back in the revision
until it works. It is a good practice to make a note of the revision of
the running ports tree you have before updating it.

I created a normal FreeBSD jail. I copied the ports tree into the jail.
Started the jail and compiled chrome.

No, X run directly on the machine. Also the desktop. I used telnet to
connect to the jail.

chrome does not work inside a jail

2014-05-04 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

I just installed chrome inside a jail. It does not display anything. No
matter what it is like settings or configuration or any website. The
same works as expected when chrome runs inside the host system.

The chrome version is Version 33.0.1750.152 (256984).

When I run other applications like firefox, kate, gedit or claws-mail
in a jail, it all works.

Is this normal?

Erich

PS: this is the console output I get when I run chrome inside a jail:

Bash? Just install it. I know some users of bash on FreeBSD. They do
not have complains.

I have written me a set of scripts which do this by using portupgrade.
All I have to do is to start the script of choice. Of course, if your
memory is good, you can enter the full portupgrade command line
directly.

You can run this also automatically wasting not a single second of your
time.

Yeah, you must have real good feet if you want to stay with Linux. It
is sad to see how much effort they have to put into their systems just
to follow the latest trends. They do not even check if a trend will
make a change for them. FreeBSD is just FreeBSD, year for year.

I would suggest that you take ftp to download the current ports tree.
It contains then a current svn. You would not need svn after this as
the ports are downloaded by using fetch.

Of course, for further updates, I would recommend moving to svn.

how I understand your problem, the behaviour of the machine is normal
as you kept the old ports tree.

If you would like to have a newer version of a port, you would have to
update the ports tree first. The big but is then that you will have to
update all installed ports too and then install the program you need.

If you have real bad luck, this could force you even to upgrade from
8.2 to 8.4. So, be careful.

Even this exercise can be done with svn and portupgrade.

I use portupgrade since many years. It was hard at the beginning but it
did not leave me with an machine I could not use anymore. Ok, it does
not upgrade the affected ports then but I still can use the machine.
Instruct it to make backup packages of the installed ports and you
should be real save.

It looks to me that the entry in libmap.conf is not even needed as
there is a link in /usr/local/lib anyway.

Rawtherapee is a very sensitive program from my point of view. It works
after one update and it crashes after the next. It might also be just
random.

I use portupgrade and make whenever I want. I did not notice any
problems as portupgrade just looks at the installed ports and then
tries them to update via ports or packages. You have to tell
portupgrade what to use.

The main advantage for me is that it continues after errors and prints
a summary at the end. You can then try to fix the problem or wait for a
new ports tree in which the problem might be fixed. Important for me is
that portupgrade never left me with an unusable system. Worst case is
that nothing gets upgraded.

you want to say i.e. all the e-mails regarding the switch to KMS
supported X should be PRs just because the writer did not read UPDATING

The advantage would be - and also the disadvantage - that every piece
of the code could have access to the environment.

That's why I moved away from it.

this is all really weird. /tmp is meant to be written by everyone on
the machine. The elements inside /tmp can have then any other settings.

Your problem must be caused by something else. At least, I cannot
remember to ever have seen /tmp with a different setting than 0777.

this is also my experience. We use a different structure in our own
make files. Ok, it is much more work to get them done. But - the big

I got this idea with the alias once after I ran into the same problem

this makes a real difference. The Celeron should not have the GPU integrated.
You have to find out now where the GPU is and of what type it is. Some are
supported by KMS, others are not supported.

Still, you said before that the other window managers start properly. So, your
problem should not be related to hardware.

I also have now no real idea what could be the cause of the problem.

I moved .kde4 out of the way, edited .xinitrc and came to the same result. The
only difference was that KDE did some 'migration' and was real slow coming up.

Stupid question. When did you compile the ports the last time? Could it be that
your KDE is a bit too old?

My installation is pretty fresh as I just replaced the hard disk.

I just started KDE for you and it worked. Here are the details:

KDE 4.8.3

Starting X is done by a script:

sudo kldload i915kms
sudo kldload acpi_call
sudo chmod 666 /dev/acpi
startx

.xinitrc looks like this (after deleting the comments):

xset m 10 3
xmodmap .xmodmaprc
exec /usr/local/bin/startkde

I only started konqueror to open FreeBSD.org. It worked as expected.

KDE started one time for me without problems.

Did you upgrade to the latest 10 sources?

As I do not use KDE, I did not test it any further.

One side note, X does not start always successfully with Intel KMS. My X220
freezes then but I cannot check with a second machine then.

I would suggest the same as Nikolay that you start testing with a very simple
window manager like blackbox or whatever you like.

Why should people running Linux switch to FreeBSD?

This is a dangerous route.

Did you forget how you started with FreeBSD?

This should not be a reason to make its use more difficult for beginners.

What will happen to FreeBSD when there are not beginners anymore?

You cannot ask people to learn first with other operating systems and then move
to FreeBSD.

At least I can still claim that I learned with BSD at the university. This is
even the main reason for using FreeBSD.

I do not understand why people get pushed away instead of offering them a
helping hand. This is at least what I do whenever possible.

I would not use the word complex, I use the word chaotic.

This depends very much on the distribution.

This even changes very fast from release to release.

How big is X and how big is a DVD? Why is it possible for others to pack it
onto a DVD?

I did not even notice that X is not part of the installation media any more as
I always try to install the ports from the current ports tree.

do a simple thing. Install a naked 8.3, 9.0 or 10.0 on a fresh hard disk. Get
then the ports tree and start compiling X.

I did not get a running system since at least 2007 when I did this. There was
always at least one manual intervention needed.

I did this the last time in the first week of May.

Yes, I know how to fix this. Yes, I reported things like this at the beginning.
After getting always the answer that it is working on my machine, I stopped
reporting it.

Yes, but:

You are moving the cost from you to the the hosting companies. If more people
use packages, they will need more capacity to supply all the different variants.

Does anybody know what takes more capacity? The sources or the binaries? I
would believe that the sources would take more space and bandwidth but the
different variants of the binaries could be much bigger at the end.

I remember some articles about the electricity bill Google gets every month. It
is not that low.

So, to paint a more complete picture, we must see both sides of the fence.

To make matters worse, people like me do both. I upgrade via the packages and
then compile while I am already able to work with the new ports. At least, if
the packages worked.

At the end, we who want to go green have to stop using the Internet and go back
to postal services as it costs less energy.

just redirect the outout if pkg_info into a file and edit it is my way of doing
things like this.

I basically create with this a script which deletes all ports I do not want to
pull through an upgrade from X.y to Y.x.

It will take some time to edit it but I did not find a better way excpet of
pkg_delete -a which deletes all ports.

This can be dangerous if you have only remote access to the machine depending
on how you access the machine.

You misunderstand me. I do not want a freeze of the ports tree, I
only recommend, to either delay an update of a base port to the
next freeze or put a short freeze around during which only ports
are updated which got screwed by the change.

If I want a freeze to 'my' ports tree, I keep the one from the

You went really deep into the system to do a simple things which
should have been done by the ports system.

If synchronised, this would not happen. But do not forget, X is an
external project. So, things can only be delayed with the freeze
but not be accelerated.

I think that the ports tree is pretty good but once in a while it

So, why is there a ports freeze just before a new release?

Isn't it done just out of the same reason?

They want to have a stable ports tree on the day of the release.

As I said, my seatbelt is the freeze whenever a basic library gets

do not even ask this question if you have a working system.

I realised this problem by luck when I tried to update a single
program which is affected by this. After seeing how many ports
depend on this, I decided to keep my system as it is and wait
until FreeBSD 8 is officially out.

I will then do a full upgrade.

I think that you hit the weakest point of FreeBSD. When a version
number of a base port changes, hundreds or even thousands of
ports have to be recompiled. It is basically the same effect as
when the major version number of FreeBSD changes.

If this would be synchronised with the main FreeBSD releases, it
would have a minor effect on users.

Hi,

I do not know if this will help here.

I have had in the past a very different problem which seems
unsolvable.

I did the same as you using portupgrade to bring my system to the
current status. It broke some things.

By change, I got the problem solve by manually compiling some
ports and reinstalling them.

Check what ports are needed by your program. Start at the base
reinstalling them manually.

I did this just by chance and found my system working afterwards.

Yes, I know, it is a lot of work if you cannot do it on the side.

Xorg 7.4, hald & dbus when upgrading via packages

2009-06-22 Thread Erich Dollansky
Hi,

with reference to this

http://forums.freebsd.org/showthread.php?t=694

I have a machine which got upgraded since the FreeBSD 6.1 days to
6.4 via the ports and never got XOrg 7.4 running because i never
got hald and dbus properly installed.

Just by chance, I saw that both hald and dbus are not put into
place.

After compiling the respective ports by hand, deinstalling the
packages and reinstalling the ports, hald and dbus appeared to be
in the proper place and working.

Since then, I have Xorg 7.4 working with hal support.

KDE is not my desktop, I use just konqueror once in a while.

the error messages should have no effect if you are using konqueror as a file browser locally.Yes, try to log on once as root under KDE to create the profile used by KDE also for root. You might have to access once the Internet to create the full profile.ErichPiotr wrote:> > > if I try to start File Manager - Super User Mode, I put the root password and then I'm getting a lot of the following errors:> > There was an error loading the module Navigation Panel.> The diagnostics is:> file not found> > There was an error loading the module Print Management Tool.> The diagnostics is:> file not found> > There was an error loading the module KSVGPlugin.> The diagnostics is:> file not found> > There was an error loading the module Icon View.> The diagnostics is:> file not found> > There was an error loading the module KHTML.> The diagnostics is:> file not found> > etc.> > > > > > --- On Thu 02/14, Mark Ovens < > wrote:> From: Mark Ovens [mailto:

Hi,

I think he wants to use konqueror locally just to see his files and he
cannot get access to his root files.

I've tried kdesu konqueror, but it doesn't work and I get a lot of
errors.
I'm using freeBSD 6.3 with KDE 3.5

open a terminal window, switch to root and start konqueror.

It works on my 6.3 machine.

When you start konqueror from the menu, you are using your own account
but not root.

INSERT BIG HORRIBLE WARNING ***
DONT use browsers and mailreaders and the like as root. If something is
fishy on the other end (mostly you dont control the other side!) you'll be
screwed. Your data will get compromised, and your machine might be joining
a ghost network, hitting on others. I strongly STRONGLY (did I say
STRONGLY!) dis-advise that you will be using this.

Re: rough method of cleaning the ports tree

Hi,

This should be much faster and also should do some kind o

still be very well organised after some months.

What does the list think of this method?

Erich

It's a good start, but to keep it clean you should set WRKDIRPREFIX=/usr/obj
or something similar in your make.conf. This way you can just wipe /usr/obj
when uncleaned builds fill up too much disk space.

this is what I will do. Plus not cleaning depending ports to speed up a
bit the build process.

Re: how to install package from local drive?

Hi,

wrote:

how to install package from local hard drive.

pkg_add PathToPackage

i use this freebsd for desktop and i don't have internet connection.
i download some package (13 GB), and i only have freebsd partition 6.5 GB

Where are the packages stored?

There must be a way to access them,

If it is on a none FreeBSD partition, you will have to mount the
partition specifying the file system with 'mount -t FileSystem' to get
access.

Do a

man mount

To find out more.
