Silverlight 2 supports Microsoft /PlayReady/ Digital Rights Management
(DRM). This is the DRM solution being used by Netflix's Watch
Instantly service for streaming movies to PC (Windows-only) and Mac
 computers.

 Status: *unsupported*

And a quick google seems to indicate that the only way to watch netflix
on Linux is wine or a VM. So you'd have to look at one of those as a
 solution.

If this Digital Rights Management is how Netflix treats its customers, we ought
to be content to not give Netflix our money.

At least, that's how I feel.

I also remember, before installing the popup blocker in (Mozilla) Seamonkey, a
Netflix window would pop up on top of the web page I was viewing: very
annoying. That deterred me from wanting anything to do with Netflix.

On the subject of Silverlight and Moonlight, I remember that for a time,
freefilefillableforms.com required Silverlight for using their site to prepare
their forms for e-filing U.S. income tax returns. Then it was Adobe Flash.
Now I don't know.

An entity, whether it is an individual or a corporation, tends to use whatever
will give it the most bang for the buck. 90% or better of all PCs used by
individuals, or in a corporate environment, can easily handle either Adobe
Flash or MS Silverlight. The problem does not lie with these somewhat competing
technologies, but rather with the refusal or inability for the remaining 10%
cope with this fact. You can cry all night in the dark, or light a candle. I
much prefer to light the candle.

Since they are a major adopter of FreeBSD couldn't Netflix be approached
to develop a viewer for FreeBSD?

I guess the first step to do that is identify the software that does

To improve your chances greatly of succeeding, you should attempt to
write the port makefiles for that software and submit it via PR. People
are more likely to take a good base and make corrections than start from

Good luck with the startup!
I assume then the netflix need is not business related. You still
should do the legwork to figure out which s/w, if any, allows the
viewing on Netflix on FreeBSD. It's fine to say, I want netflix, and
a consultant would run with those customer requirements, but volunteers:
not so much. I'm just giving you suggestions to increase your odds of
success.

I really don't have the time. :-( Besides, haven't coded outside of
 scripting in quite a while.

Makefiles are comparable to scripting. You aren't doing any coding
yourself unless the s/w requires patches to work on FreeBSD. Makefiles
are basically a set of instructions on how to build the s/w and in many
cases it's limited to run the makefile that comes with the s/w and the
whole thing is like 20 lines long in the best cases. So I suspect you
have the basic skills unless the word compiler is foreign to you. :)

If the company is a success, I plan on having it financing a lot of
 projects. :-)

Which is another option for you: bounties. A bounty is a small payment
offered for a specific job, so you could always say $50 for anyone that
produces this for me. I've never participated in bounties myself (on
either side) but at least it's an option.

Once I retire (less than 15 years yeah, I'm old), I plan on
spending a lot of free time working for FreeBSD/ports/documentation.

However, Moonlight development is dead, and Silverlight itself seems to be

would provide full Silverlight functionality instead of the subset offered
