Disk migration question.
Hey there - I'm moving a disk drive from a 4.7 system to a 5.0 system in a different computer. There are two slices on the disk, a swap partition and a large data slice. When I mount the disk into the filesystem, I receive the following error: /var/backups: correcting fs_sblockloc from 65536 to 8192 I presume this is because the BIOS is presenting the disk translation differently. Running fdisk on the device gives the following info now: *** Working on device /dev/ad2 *** parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are: cylinders=159560 heads=16 sectors/track=63 (1008 blks/cyl) Figures below won't work with BIOS for partitions not in cyl 1 parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are: cylinders=159560 heads=16 sectors/track=63 (1008 blks/cyl) whereas before it was: *** Working on device /dev/ad1 *** parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are: cylinders=10011 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl) Figures below won't work with BIOS for partitions not in cyl 1 parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are: cylinders=10011 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl) Apart from the error message, the slice seems to mount fine and the data is intact. My question is, how significant is that message, and is this something that needs to be fixed? If so, is there a non-destructive process like reinitializing the disk label, or do I need to wipe the drive and reformat? TIA. Here's how I have mine set up (ipnat): map tun0 192.168.56.0/24 -> 0/32 portmap tcp/udp 63000:65535 map tun0 192.168.56.0/24 -> 0/32 Basically what this says is: - All internal traffic will be routed between 63000-65535 - All outgoing connections from internal machines will be temporarily translated. Meaning, if 192.168.56.5:3456 (internal client) connects to 192.168.56.2:63001 (gateway), when the data comes back from the remote server to 63001, NAT remembers that this is actually intended for 192.168.56.5:3456, and routes accordingly .. "The Complete FreeBSD", third edition: errata and addenda
Errata and addenda for the Complete FreeBSD, third edition Last revision: 2 August 1999 The trouble with books is that you can't update them the way you can a web page or any other online documentation. The result is that most leading edge computer books are out of date almost before they are printed. Unfortunately, ``The Complete FreeBSD'', published by Walnut Creek, is no exception. In- evitably, a number of bugs and changes have surfaced. The following is a list of modifications which go beyond simple typos. They relate to the third edition, formatted on 17 May 1999. You'll find this information on page iv (the page before the beginning of the Table of Contents). See the end of this document for instructions on how to find the errata for an older version. You can get the current document in four forms: o A PostScript version, suitable for printingout,at ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-3.ps. See page 302 of the third edition to find out how to print out PostScript. If at all possible, please take this document: it's closest to the original text. Be careful selecting this file with a web browser: it is often impossible to reload the document, and you may see a previously cached version. o An enhanced ASCII version at ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-3.txt. When viewed with more or less, this version will show some highlighting and underlining. It's not suitable for direct viewing. o An ASCII-only version at ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-3.ascii. This version is posted every week to the FreeBSD-questions mailing list. Only take this version if you have real problems with PostScript: I can't be sure that the lack of different fonts won't confuse the meaning. o A web version at http://www.lemis.com/errata-3.html. All these modifications have been applied to the ongoing source text of the book, so if you buy a later edition, they will be in it as well. If you find a Page 1 The Complete FreeBSD bug or a suspected bug in the book, please contact me at <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Page ii ___ The instructions on page ii (opposite the title page) tell you to look at ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-2 for the errata list. That's wrong. Look at this list. Pages 190 and 191 _ The description is not very clear about which text appears when booting from floppy for initial install, and which appears when booting normally. The procedure is very similar, but there are some differences. Add the following text after the heading Boot messages: You'll boot your system in at least two different ways: initially you'll boot from floppy or CD-ROM in order to install the system. Later, after the system is installed, you'll boot from hard disk. The procedure is almost identical, so we'll look at both versions in the following examples. Replace the text from the middle of page 191 with: If you're booting from 1.44 MB floppies, you will then see: Please insert MFS root floppy and press enter: When you insert the MFS root floppy and press Enter, you see more twirling batons, then the UserConfig screen appears. UserConfig: Modifying the boot configuration After the kernel has been loaded, the following screen will appear if you are installing the system, or if you have requested it with the -c option to the boot loader: Page 206 The bottom two lines on this page should be in bold constant font, indicating that this is input for your /etc/rc.config file Page 2 Errata and addenda for the Complete FreeBSD, third edition nfs_client_enable="YES" # This host is an NFS client (or NO). nfs_server_enable="YES" # This host is an NFS server (or NO). Modern disks make provisions for recovering from such errors by allocating an alternate sector for the data. IDE drives do this automatically, but with SCSI drives you have the option of enabling or disabling reallocation. Usually it is turned on when you buy them, but occasionally it is not. When installing a new disk, you should check that the parameters ARRE (Auto Read Reallocation Enable) and AWRE (Auto Write Reallocation Enable) are turned on. For example, to check and set the values for disk da1, you would enter: # camcontrol modepage da1 -m 1 -e -P 3 # scsi -f /dev/rda1c -m 1 -e -P 3 This command will start up your favourite editor (either the one specified in the EDITOR environment variable, or vi by default) with the f

IV: How to submit a question to FreeBSD-questions V:How to answer a question to FreeBSD-questions I: Introduction === This is a regular posting aimed to help both those seeking advice from FreeBSD-questions (the "newcomers"), and also those who answer the questions (the "hackers"). Note that the term "hacker" has nothing to do with breaking into other people's computers. The correct term for the latter activity is "cracker", but the popular press hasn't found out yet. The FreeBSD hackers disapprove strongly of cracking security, and have nothing to do with it. In the past, there has been some friction which stems from the different viewpoints of the two groups. The newcomers accused the hackers of being arrogant, stuck-up, and unhelpful, while the hackers accused the newcomers of being stupid, unable to read plain English, and expecting everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. Of course, there's an element of truth in both these claims, but for the most part these viewpoints come from a sense of frustration. In this document, I'd like to do something to relieve this frustration and help everybody get better results from FreeBSD-questions. In the following section, I recommend how to submit a question; after that, we'll look at how to answer one. II: How to unsubscribe from FreeBSD-questions == When you subscribed to FreeBSD-questions, you got a welcome message from [EMAIL PROTECTED] In this message, amongst other things, it told you how to unsubscribe. You should not send "how to" questions to the technical lists unless you consider the question to be pretty technical. Normally, unsubscribing is even simpler than the message suggests: you don't need to specify your mail ID unless it is different from the one which you specified when you subscribed. If Majordomo replies and tells you (incorrectly) that you're not on the list, this may mean one of two things: 1. You have changed your mail ID since you subscribed. That's where keeping the original message from majordomo comes in handy. For example, the sample message above shows my mail ID as [EMAIL PROTECTED] Since then, I have changed it to [EMAIL PROTECTED] If I were to try to remove [EMAIL PROTECTED] from the list, it would fail: I would have to specify the name with which I joined. 2. You're subscribed to a mailing list which is subscribed to FreeBSD-questions. If that's the case, you'll have to figure out which one it is and get your name taken off that one. If you're not sure which one it might be, check the headers of the messages you receive from freebsd-questions: maybe there's a clue there. I'm no kernel guy :( The ioctl is the cmd parameter passed to diskioctl, 0x8004646d. That's DIOCWLABEL. Finding them isn't easy, but basically: 0x8 -> _IOW macro. We're writing. 004length to write 64 ioctl type ('d'). You'd go looking for a regular expression _IOW.*'d'. 6d ioctl number (109). This one is in /sys/sys/disklabel.h: #define DIOCWLABEL _IOW('d', 109, int) /* write en/disable label */ It's not clear what's trying to write the label, but looking at the locals of the dsioctl frame would help. > I appreciate this may not be a bug in Vinum, but it certainly seems > like it's being triggered by vinum. KBurnCD is now available for testing.
If your like me you may have wished that their was a good GUI front-end to FreeBSD's burncd command for ATAPI CD burners. I know reading this list, I have seen a lot of questions about this. Well it is now here. KBurnCD is a KDE front-end to the FreeBSD command burncd (a command line ATAPI CD burner command). Although there are several KDE cd-burning software, none work with FreeBSD’s burncd command. So I got a coding bud and went at it. I hope everyone likes it. I must worn you this is my first application and it went together in about a weeks time. So if you look at the code, well it is not the nicest code you will every see and have not had time to doc it yet. it is a http://kburncd.sourceforge.net/ I have also not had time to make a web page yet but under Images there is about 7 or so screen shots. I would like to thank sourceforge.net. I hope that me sending this to this list will not upset anyone and I hope this will encourage more people to use my favorite OS "FreeBSD". I hope that some day it will be in the ports collection. list of current functions cd copy (even multisession CD) burn cd from iso images make cd image frome cd (not quit working yet) make audio cd from multi source etc. other-cd raw-file track manager (you have to see it, can't explain it) session viewer hope to add iso creator mp3 encoder and what people wont that i can do. ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

NameVirutalHost on multiple IPs not working??
Hi, I'm having a challenge with my Apache NameVirtualHost config... I have my server connected to two networks, AT&T and UUNET, the NIC is assigned a AT&T IP and is aliased which several others, both AT&T and UUNET. That part is working well. When a client requests a site, our DNS returns two IP addresses, one AT&T and one UUNET. (I don't want to discuss the quality of this solution (grin), just why it's not working at the moment.) The idea is that if one network is down, the person's web client should look for the domain at the second IP (I know this isn't 'redundant,' but it's what i got) Now, the VirtualHosts on AT&T are working fine. I have domains pointing to 219 and 220 (below) and Apache handles them perfectly. But, if AT&T goes down, Apache only returns the 'default' VirtualHost on 107 and 108, not the client's site. Here's what I have in the relevant parts of httpd.conf NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.219 (AT&T) NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.220 (AT&T) NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.107 (UUNET) NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.108 (UUNET) Then a standard directive would be ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED] DocumentRoot /www/clientname ServerName www.clientdomain.com ..yadda yadda FreeBSD 4.6 Apache 1.2.x (11 i think) Is there something that I'm missing? phillip. 5.0 install won't start
Hello I have a Compaq Armada 1500c C366 notebook with 160MB memory. I have been running FreeBSD on it since 3.0. At the moment I run 4.7-p9. I tried to install the new 5.0 on another partition (slice). The machine boots happily until it says: Mounting root from ufs:/dev/md0 If I boot from the CD-ROM it adds a grayish line after a while: acpi_tz0: WARNING - current temperatur (73.0 C) exceeds system limits I tried booting off the installation floppies, in case the problem was with the new ACPI support. After the "Mounting root from ufs:/dev/md0" it immediately adds a bright line: /stand/sysinstall running as init on vty0 ...but nothing happens after that. Does anybody know how to proceed? If it is a conflict of some kind, how can I resolve it? I don't believe the machine is hot. It has been in use for years and runs FBSD 4.7 and Windoze for days without problems. I can live without the ACPI, if I only could install the base system. I have thought about installing 4.7 and updating to 5.0 by building world. Re: Stupid question
Gerard Samuel wrote: How does one send a message to another logged in user on the same box via the command line?? Thanks No such thing as a stupid question, it's the answers you have to worry about that make it seem stupid. Dictionary.com defines stupid as: 1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse. 2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes. 3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a stupid mistake. 4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied. 5. Pointless; worthless: a stupid job. From bottom to top, 5 - Your question was not pointless or worthless. 4 - Hopefully it wasn't any of these. 3 - Hmmm, we're getting dangerously close to questions being stupid, but unless some previous life experience exposed this to you then nope. 2 - It certainly wasn't a poor decision or careless mistake that you asked a question. 1 - Being slow to learn or understand a given problem isn't really that bad. With all the different commands, software packages, utilities and what nots for any given OS, unless you encountered it through a life experience or learned it then that wouldn't make one a slow learner. At most it is getting close to obtuse. But even then unless you encountered the concept of your question it really doesn't count. You can start with /man write/ then go from there, being sure to review the SEE ALSO section for other commands that might do what you want as well. Yes, that means that a spammer from screensaver4u.com attempted (but failed) 143 times to relay spam through your server. The reports do this automatically... The best way of doing this is to add a line: xterm*termName: xterm-color to ~/.Xdefaults, and then make sure that: /usr/X11R6/bin/xrdb -merge ${HOME}/.Xdefaults gets run as part of your session initialization --- ie. add it to your ~/.xsession file if you're running xdm(1) or equivalent, or to ~/.xinitrc if you're using startx(1). Can't browse webmin; out of swap space
I just installed 1.070 from a freshly updated ports collection and there didn't seem to be any problem at all with the installation. I'm new to this so please put up with my simplistic perspective on the problem at hand. I had no problem with the make, make install or the make clean. I then ran the setup.sh as instructed and no error messages were produced. I did notice that the final note of the setup.sh was to use the username and password I had previously used but this was the first installation on this box and I had never provided one in the past to a previous installation. Please help with this as well. But the real reason for the email is this: As instructed, I used my browser on another machine to go to https://host:1 and was unsuccessful. Here's what I found with a little poking around: The used portion of the swap file continues to grow and grow, the size column in top on the host eventually hits 400+MB for the perl process, the console begins to spit out swap_pager_getswapspace: failed after a few minutes and the I get: PID 247 (perl), uid 0, was killed: out of swap space. Then Mozilla on the client computer tells me that the connection to the host has terminated unexpectedly. Any suggestions from anyone? Thanks so much in advance for everyone being there for newbies like us. Tamir p.s. Re: Freebsd - restarting itself?!
Hi Jason, If there was not a clean shutdown, I would start looking for faulty hardware, assuming the power was not interrupted. Any machine that spontaniously reboots on its' own usually has a bad power supply, but it could be very well be the motherboard, or even something else. Further, as many other people have said, just because the hardware is new does not necessarily mean it is problem-free. Look especially for the condensators on the motherboard. There is a wide-spread problem with a Taiwanese company having produced bad electrolyte. The resulting condensators are found in motherboards of nearly all manufacturers and (as I can say out of my own experience) give exactly the behaviour, you described. This is off topic (sort of), but out of curiosity, could problems like that on a motherboard cause problems relating to memory? If so, I bet this explains my problems at work lately with an NT4 server giving me the BSOD all the time with memory errors. First, when I wrote condensators, I meant electrolytic capacitors, sorry for the Germanism. Look where your faulty capacitors are placed on your motherboard. There are several of them around the processor socket and some next to the memory banks. They supply these parts with current, if the "demand" heavily changes, as these fluctuations can't be compensated by the power supply unit. My faulty capacitors were placed around the processor and I've seen exactly the above-mentioned behaviour of spontaneously reboots. If your faulty ones are for the memory modules, all kinds of memory errors could be caused by this. BTW, if you think about replacing the capacitors, make sure you get low-ESR-capacitors, normal ones won't work. I got mine from farnell.com. Problem with this mailing list
Hi all! I have a very strange problem. Since last Friday I don't receive the messages on this mailing list any more. I do receive the messages for the freebsd-current list, however (subscribed two days ago). I can only look at the messages in the archive. Maybe I have to unsubscribe an subscribe again, but how do I do that? I can't recieve the confirmation E-Mail. Thanks in advance. Using .cvsignore
Hello! I'm trying to avoid storing (and updating) some parts of the FreeBSD's repository -- some of the locales under the ports collection, kerberos stuff under src... I tried the obvious -- adding chinese korean portuguese [...] to the /usr/ports/.cvsignore (next to packages and distfiles already listed there). I then removed the directories, but was surprised, when cvs tried to get them all again. What am I missing? My ~/.cvsrc says -z9 update -d -A -P diff-U2 Thanks! -mi ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
PICOBSD /dev/mdxx memory disk problems
Dear Sirs. I use FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT on several experimental systems. I try to test new diskless and picobsd facilities and abilities of the newest FBSD 5.0-CURRENT stuff and I am a little bit disappointed. First there is a little bug in the picobsd shell-script/command: newfs does no longer support option '-p', so this runs into a failure. When buidling a picobsd image I get this error: ---snap *** init_fs_image() /usr/src/release/picobsd/build_dir-bastion/fs.PICOBSD 8192 *** Labeling MFS image *** Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on /dev/md1c 79830 7983 0%/var/tmp/picobsd.S98gZK4mQz *** Copy mfs tree into file *** Status of mfs image Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on /dev/md1c 7983 1458 652518% 81 10697% /var/tmp/picobsd.S98gZK4mQz fsck: exec /usr/sbin/fsck_4.2BSD for /dev/md1c: No such file or directory Warning: creating filesystem that does not conform to ISO-9660. --- snap The last warning is due to several special mkisofs options that are not conform. Important is the failure of building the MFS filesystem. It seems that /dev/md1c is really present, but when fsck tries to check it, it gets an error. I have a similar error on diskless boot process in FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT, where obviously no memory disk can be created. Can someon verify or falsify these oberservations? Thanks a lot ... Problem with kdm (or not)?
When I boot my machine, I get the following message at the command prompt before it launches me into the KDM login screen (it works, there is no problem with that). What does it mean? kdm[605]: Abnormal helper termination, code 0, signal 5 Thanks, Anthony Carter ___ [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailing list http://lists.freebsd.org/mailman/listinfo/freebsd-questions To unsubscribe, send any mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

hi all. i recently installed kde3 via ports, but it seems that make forgot to install startkde. i thought that it was just a problem with cvsupping in between updates, so i deinstalled kde3, cvsupped again this morning, and reinstalled kde3 via ports. same problem. is it possible to just create a startkde script? if so, can anyone give me a copy of the contents? i dunno what startkde should contain :-). tnx in advance. __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: FreeBSD and Oracle
I know that there is an Oracle 7 client on FreeBSD, but I don't know about 8i. Do you want to run Oracle server on FreeBSD or just a client?
