I have users who collect mail via pop and webmail, and other
users who use ftp. I just put /sbin/nologin as their shell in
the password file. This prevents them from logging in.
I have heard that rsh is insecure.

I am using 4.8-RC which I have cvsuped today for the problem that I have

Disk migration question.

2003-03-28 Thread Kevin Stevens
Hey there -

I'm moving a disk drive from a 4.7 system to a 5.0 system in a
different computer. There are two slices on the disk, a swap partition
and a large data slice. When I mount the disk into the filesystem, I
receive the following error:

/var/backups: correcting fs_sblockloc from 65536 to 8192

I presume this is because the BIOS is presenting the disk translation
differently. Running fdisk on the device gives the following info now:

*** Working on device /dev/ad2 ***
parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are:
cylinders=159560 heads=16 sectors/track=63 (1008 blks/cyl)
Figures below won't work with BIOS for partitions not in cyl 1
parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are:
cylinders=159560 heads=16 sectors/track=63 (1008 blks/cyl)
whereas before it was:

*** Working on device /dev/ad1 ***
parameters extracted from in-core disklabel are:
cylinders=10011 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl)
Figures below won't work with BIOS for partitions not in cyl 1
parameters to be used for BIOS calculations are:
cylinders=10011 heads=255 sectors/track=63 (16065 blks/cyl)
Apart from the error message, the slice seems to mount fine and the
data is intact.

My question is, how significant is that message, and is this something
that needs to be fixed?
If so, is there a non-destructive process like reinitializing the disk
label, or do I need to wipe the drive and reformat?

TIA.

Hmmm, have you updated your ports tree with CVSup without updating the
ports-base collection recently?

The -e option is used in the Makefile of the openmotif port for the
${REINPLACE_CMD} command. This should be set properly by bsd.port.mk
from /usr/ports/Mk. What revision of bsd.port.mk do you have in that
directory? Mine is 1.442... Can you check with ident too?

USB Wireless Network Adapter

2003-03-28 Thread Zachariah P Garner
Does anyone know if there are any USB Wireless network adapters that are
supported under FreeBSD? (I'm running 5.0)

I have read the map pages for wi, but they only list PCMCIA cards. I know
that many companies have a PCI version of the pcmcia card.

I have heard that you are likely to get better performance out of a USB
adapter since you can more easily move it to get a better signal.

Are there particular manufacturers that I should purchase from or avoid?

If anyone can offer any advice, I would appreciate it.

adding a patch to a port

2003-03-28 Thread David Banning
I was given a patch for the dillo port which I don't quite
know how to configure. I wonder how I can take this format and
turn it into something I can use in the port. It seems that most
patches in the ports are separated as individual files while this one
has them in one file. Is there a simple way to reconfigure it
or is a test editor the only way?

Just wanted to say that I have used the cygwin setup to do this; it's pretty
easy.

Just establish a ssh X session (ssh -X), then launch an xterm. (though,
you'll need to setup some things for ssh first. There's a variety of
suggested methods for this. A good overview is available at
http://www.cs.odu.edu/~cs252/unix/xwin.html#xx__1_5 )

This kind of question has come by before. IIRC it's a question of
setting certain timing delays correctly. See if you can find anything

More than likely your NAT is misconfigured.

Here's how I have mine set up (ipnat):
map tun0 192.168.56.0/24 -> 0/32 portmap tcp/udp 63000:65535
map tun0 192.168.56.0/24 -> 0/32

Basically what this says is:
- All internal traffic will be routed between 63000-65535
- All outgoing connections from internal machines will be temporarily
translated. Meaning, if 192.168.56.5:3456 (internal client) connects to
192.168.56.2:63001 (gateway), when the data comes back from the remote
server to 63001, NAT remembers that this is actually intended for
192.168.56.5:3456, and routes accordingly ..

I hope this makes sense to you ..

"The Complete FreeBSD", third edition: errata and addenda

2003-03-28 Thread Greg Lehey

Errata and addenda for the Complete FreeBSD, third edition

 Last revision: 2 August 1999

The trouble with books is that you can't update them the way you can a web page
or any other online documentation. The result is that most leading edge
computer books are out of date almost before they are printed. Unfortunately,
``The Complete FreeBSD'', published by Walnut Creek, is no exception. In-
evitably, a number of bugs and changes have surfaced.

The following is a list of modifications which go beyond simple typos. They
relate to the third edition, formatted on 17 May 1999. You'll find this
information on page iv (the page before the beginning of the Table of
Contents). See the end of this document for instructions on how to find the
errata for an older version.

You can get the current document in four forms:

o A PostScript version, suitable for printingout,at
ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-3.ps. See page 302 of the third edition
to find out how to print out PostScript. If at all possible, please take
this document: it's closest to the original text.

Be careful selecting this file with a web browser: it is often impossible to
reload the document, and you may see a previously cached version.

o An enhanced ASCII version at ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-3.txt. When
viewed with more or less, this version will show some highlighting and
underlining. It's not suitable for direct viewing.

o An ASCII-only version at ftp://ftp.lemis.com/pub/cfbsd/errata-3.ascii. This
version is posted every week to the FreeBSD-questions mailing list. Only
take this version if you have real problems with PostScript: I can't be sure
that the lack of different fonts won't confuse the meaning.

o A web version at http://www.lemis.com/errata-3.html.

All these modifications have been applied to the ongoing source text of the
book, so if you buy a later edition, they will be in it as well. If you find a

The description is not very clear about which text appears when booting from
floppy for initial install, and which appears when booting normally. The
procedure is very similar, but there are some differences. Add the following
text after the heading Boot messages:

You'll boot your system in at least two different ways: initially you'll boot
from floppy or CD-ROM in order to install the system. Later, after the system
is installed, you'll boot from hard disk. The procedure is almost identical,
so we'll look at both versions in the following examples.

Replace the text from the middle of page 191 with:

If you're booting from 1.44 MB floppies, you will then see:

Please insert MFS root floppy and press enter:

When you insert the MFS root floppy and press Enter, you see more twirling
batons, then the UserConfig screen appears.

After the kernel has been loaded, the following screen will appear if you are
installing the system, or if you have requested it with the -c option to the

drives you have the option of enabling or disabling reallocation. Usually it
is turned on when you buy them, but occasionally it is not. When installing a
new disk, you should check that the parameters ARRE (Auto Read Reallocation
Enable) and AWRE (Auto Write Reallocation Enable) are turned on. For example,
to check and set the values for disk da1, you would enter:

# camcontrol modepage da1 -m 1 -e -P 3
# scsi -f /dev/rda1c -m 1 -e -P 3

This command will start up your favourite editor (either the one specified in
the EDITOR environment variable, or vi by default) with the f

How to get the best results from FreeBSD questions.
===

Last update $Date: 2003/03/09 22:09:31 $

This is a regular posting to the FreeBSD questions mailing list. If
you got it in answer to a message you sent, it means that the sender
thinks that at least one of the following things was wrong with your
message:

- You left out a subject line, or the subject line was not appropriate.
- You formatted it in such a way that it was difficult to read.
- You asked more than one unrelated question in one message.
- You sent out a message with an incorrect date, time or time zone.
- You sent out the same message more than once.
- You sent an 'unsubscribe' message to FreeBSD-questions.

If you have done any of these things, there is a good chance that you
will get more than one copy of this message from different people.
Read on, and your next message will be more successful.

V:How to answer a question to FreeBSD-questions

I: Introduction
===

This is a regular posting aimed to help both those seeking advice from
FreeBSD-questions (the "newcomers"), and also those who answer the
questions (the "hackers").

Note that the term "hacker" has nothing to do with breaking
into other people's computers. The correct term for the latter
activity is "cracker", but the popular press hasn't found out
yet. The FreeBSD hackers disapprove strongly of cracking
security, and have nothing to do with it.

In the past, there has been some friction which stems from the
different viewpoints of the two groups. The newcomers accused the
hackers of being arrogant, stuck-up, and unhelpful, while the hackers
accused the newcomers of being stupid, unable to read plain English,
and expecting everything to be handed to them on a silver platter. Of
course, there's an element of truth in both these claims, but for the
most part these viewpoints come from a sense of frustration.

In this document, I'd like to do something to relieve this frustration
and help everybody get better results from FreeBSD-questions. In the
following section, I recommend how to submit a question; after that,
we'll look at how to answer one.

II: How to unsubscribe from FreeBSD-questions
==

When you subscribed to FreeBSD-questions, you got a welcome message
from [EMAIL PROTECTED] In this message, amongst other things, it
told you how to unsubscribe. Here's a typical message:

Welcome to the freebsd-questions mailing list!

If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list,
you can send mail to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" with the following command
in the body of your email message:

  unsubscribe freebsd-questions Greg Lehey <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Here's the general information for the list you've
subscribed to, in case you don't already have it:

  FREEBSD-QUESTIONS User questions
This is the mailing list for questions about FreeBSD. You should not
send "how to" questions to the technical lists unless you consider the
  question to be pretty technical.

Normally, unsubscribing is even simpler than the message suggests: you
don't need to specify your mail ID unless it is different from the one
which you specified when you subscribed.

If Majordomo replies and tells you (incorrectly) that you're not on
the list, this may mean one of two things:

  1. You have changed your mail ID since you subscribed. That's where
keeping the original message from majordomo comes in handy. For
example, the sample message above shows my mail ID as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Since then, I have changed it to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] If I were to try to remove [EMAIL PROTECTED] from
the list, it would fail: I would have to specify the name with
  which I joined.

  2. You're subscribed to a mailing list which is subscribed to
FreeBSD-questions. If that's the case, you'll have to figure out
which one it is and get your name taken off that one. If you're
not sure which one it might be, check the headers of the
messages you receive from freebsd-questions: maybe there's a
  clue there.

If you've done all this, and you still can't figure out what's going
on, send a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED], and he will sort things
out for you. Don't send a message to FreeBSD-questions: they can't
help you.

III: Should I ask -questions, -newbies or -hackers?
===

Two mailing lists handle general questions about FreeBSD,
FreeBSD-questions and FreeBSD-hackers. In addition, the
FreeBSD-newbies l

bring life into them.

The ioctl is the cmd parameter passed to diskioctl, 0x8004646d.
That's DIOCWLABEL. Finding them isn't easy, but basically:

0x8 -> _IOW macro.  We're writing.
004length to write
64 ioctl type ('d'). You'd go looking for a regular expression
   _IOW.*'d'.
6d ioctl number (109). This one is in /sys/sys/disklabel.h:

#define DIOCWLABEL  _IOW('d', 109, int) /* write en/disable label */

It's not clear what's trying to write the label, but looking at the
locals of the dsioctl frame would help.

KBurnCD is now available for testing.

2003-03-28 Thread Justin L. Boss
If your like me you may have wished that their was a good GUI front-end
to FreeBSD's burncd command for ATAPI CD burners. I know reading this
list, I have seen a lot of questions about this. Well it is now here.
KBurnCD is a KDE front-end to the FreeBSD command burncd (a command line
ATAPI CD burner command). Although there are several KDE cd-burning
software, none work with FreeBSD’s burncd command. So I got a coding bud
and went at it. I hope everyone likes it. I must worn you this is my
first application and it went together in about a weeks time. So if you
look at the code, well it is not the nicest code you will every see and
have not had time to doc it yet. it is a http://kburncd.sourceforge.net/
I have also not had time to make a web page yet but under Images there
is about 7 or so screen shots. I would like to thank sourceforge.net. I
hope that me sending this to this list will not upset anyone and I hope
this will encourage more people to use my favorite OS "FreeBSD". I hope
that some day it will be in the ports collection.

list of current functions

cd copy (even multisession CD)
burn cd from iso images
make cd image frome cd (not quit working yet)
make audio cd from multi source etc. other-cd raw-file
track manager (you have to see it, can't explain it)
session viewer
hope to add

iso creator
mp3 encoder
and what people wont that i can do.

rpm problems

2003-03-28 Thread Michael Grant
I'm trying to install something from an rpm which uses the linux

I have tried the following:

rpm -vv -i --force --ignoreos --nodeps fmserver-trial-5.5-1.i386.rpm

and

rpm -vv -i --force --root /compat/linux --dbpath /var/lib/rpm --ignoreos --nodeps
fmserver-trial-5.5-1.i386.rpm

both report that it creates a bunch of files but nothing seems to
actually get installed!

rpm --version reports:
RPM version 3.0.6

Any clues?

ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/ports/packages/All/cvsup-without-gui-16.1g.tgz
read the handbook appendix on cvsup and you should be fine using that.

I have problem in configuring XFree86 in FreeBSD 4.7

I try to configure it after installation. I used graphical
tool and textmode utility too.
The result is often the same:

"The XFree86 configuration process seems to have failed.
Would you like to try again?"

have you tried this:
http://www.FreeBSD.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html
My usual configuration steps are:

1) XFree86 -configure
2) edit the XF86Config.new to put in the mouse information
(i use device "/dev/psm0" and type "auto")
3) Try it again:
 XFree86 -xf86config XF86Config.new
4) repeat until it works
5) post specific excerpts from /var/log/XFree86.0.log and/ or
 XF86Config.new if you have problems

NameVirutalHost on multiple IPs not working??

2003-03-28 Thread Phillip Smith

Hi,

I'm having a challenge with my Apache NameVirtualHost config... I have my
server connected to two networks, AT&T and UUNET, the NIC is assigned a AT&T
IP and is aliased which several others, both AT&T and UUNET. That part is
working well. When a client requests a site, our DNS returns two IP
addresses, one AT&T and one UUNET. (I don't want to discuss the quality of
this solution (grin), just why it's not working at the moment.) The idea is
that if one network is down, the person's web client should look for the
domain at the second IP (I know this isn't 'redundant,' but it's what i got)
Now, the VirtualHosts on AT&T are working fine. I have domains pointing to
219 and 220 (below) and Apache handles them perfectly. But, if AT&T goes
down, Apache only returns the 'default' VirtualHost on 107 and 108, not the
client's site.

Here's what I have in the relevant parts of httpd.conf

NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.219 (AT&T)
NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.220 (AT&T)
NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.107 (UUNET)
NameVirtualHost 123.456.789.108 (UUNET)

Then a standard directive would be

ServerAdmin [EMAIL PROTECTED]
DocumentRoot /www/clientname
ServerName www.clientdomain.com
..yadda yadda

FreeBSD 4.6
Apache 1.2.x (11 i think)

Is there something that I'm missing?

phillip.

P.S. Please cc me directly, as I'm temporarily not subscribed to the list.

5.0 install won't start

2003-03-28 Thread Petri Riihikallio
Hello

I have a Compaq Armada 1500c C366 notebook with 160MB memory. I have
been running FreeBSD on it since 3.0. At the moment I run 4.7-p9.

I tried to install the new 5.0 on another partition (slice). The
machine boots happily until it says:
Mounting root from ufs:/dev/md0

If I boot from the CD-ROM it adds a grayish line after a while:
acpi_tz0: WARNING - current temperatur (73.0 C) exceeds system limits
I tried booting off the installation floppies, in case the problem
was with the new ACPI support. After the "Mounting root from
ufs:/dev/md0" it immediately adds a bright line:
/stand/sysinstall running as init on vty0

...but nothing happens after that.

Does anybody know how to proceed? If it is a conflict of some kind,
how can I resolve it?

I don't believe the machine is hot. It has been in use for years and
runs FBSD 4.7 and Windoze for days without problems. I can live
without the ACPI, if I only could install the base system.

I have thought about installing 4.7 and updating to 5.0 by building
world. However, I would prefer to perform the major number upgrades
by a clean install.

Hi John,

I take it from your post (you downloaded some stuff) that you have
access to the Net even if your Windows machine does not. Have a look

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/install-pre.html

You will find an excellent documentation about how to get FreeBSD and
install it. After that, consult the other handbook chapters found under

8i is not in the ports, but FWIW, I did get Oracle8i (for Linux) client working on
FreeBSD last week, for some definition of 'working' - I can't access my Oracle
server from it because the server is inside a firewall and the client is outside
a firewall. But this is not caused by the platform on which I run the client, I had
exactly the same problem with Windows.

Mostly I followed the Oracle chapter of the handbook but I needed to do some
adjustments. I can't remember the details, though. It's been a hectic week.

That's easy - the packages are old enough that they didn't record
their origin.

>(Most important)

Installing newer versions of the packages is the obvious way. You can
also go into /var/db/pkg/wterm-6.2.7a1/+CONTENTS and add a line that
says "@comment ORIGIN:x11/wterm" after the @name line. There may be
other magic required as well, but this worked for the one I did it to.

What's odd is that this shouldn't make pkg_add fail. Is it possible
that you're getting another error message in amongst these complaints?

FreeBSD doesn't distribute binary packages at this time. You have to
download the source tarball from sun.com, and the java/jdk14 port will patch

Re: Stupid question

Gerard Samuel wrote:
How does one send a message to another logged in user on the same box

Thanks

No such thing as a stupid question, it's the answers you have to worry
about that make it seem stupid.

Dictionary.com defines stupid as:

   1. Slow to learn or understand; obtuse.
   2. Tending to make poor decisions or careless mistakes.
   3. Marked by a lack of intelligence or care; foolish or careless: a
stupid mistake.
   4. Dazed, stunned, or stupefied.
   5. Pointless; worthless: a stupid job.

From bottom to top,
5 - Your question was not pointless or worthless.
4 - Hopefully it wasn't any of these.
3 - Hmmm, we're getting dangerously close to questions being stupid,
but unless some previous life experience exposed this to you then nope.
2 - It certainly wasn't a poor decision or careless mistake that you
asked a question.
1 - Being slow to learn or understand a given problem isn't really
that bad. With all the different commands, software packages, utilities
and what nots for any given OS, unless you encountered it through a life
experience or learned it then that wouldn't make one a slow learner. At
most it is getting close to obtuse. But even then unless you encountered
the concept of your question it really doesn't count.

You can start with /man write/ then go from there, being sure to review
the SEE ALSO section for other commands that might do what you want as well.

HTH :)

Hi folks,

I hope someone can help me with my problem I am facing with my "HP C1537 -

I don't know what the problem is, but a "mt fsf 1" command with the device
returns the following error:

(sa0:sym0:0:6:0): ERASE. CDB: 19 1 0 0 0 0

(sa0:sym0:0:6:0): Sequential positioning error
(sa0:sym0:0:6:0): Retries Exhausted

I have tried to format it with "mt erase" etc. I have no experience with
tapes, but I did almost everything I have read in the docs I could find. I
thouth it was a medium error (seemed obviously), but I have tried 5 different
tapes -the right ones for my device according to the instructions of HP.

FreeBSD 5 recognizes the device (snip of dmesg):
sa0 at sym0 bus 0 target 6 lun 0
sa0: Removable Sequential Access SCSI-2 device
sa0: 10.000MB/s transfers (10.000MHz, offset 16)

Please help me! Thanks a lot,

Re: Question about bounced mail

2003-03-28 Thread Peter Elsner
Yes, that means that a spammer from screensaver4u.com attempted (but
failed) 143 times to relay spam through your server.

The reports do this automatically... If you have your access file in
/etc/mail set accordingly to only allow RELAYing from
trusted sites (internal), then anything that isn't allowed to relay through
you, will be in the reports the next day.

Installing JDK 1.4.1

2003-03-28 Thread Stuart Morse
Hi All,

I've been to the http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/ports/java/jdk14/
page to try
and retrieve the tar file containing the JDK but can't find it. This is
probably
because I haven't worked out how things hang together yet.

Because my company does not have a DNS server inside their firewall I can't
install
any software over an FTP connection using sysinstall. Bearing this in mind,
how would
I get the JDK? I can't find it on the installation CDs.

It pretty much means that somebody was trying to use your system as a
means of relaying email. You can verify this by grepping your sendmail
log as well as zgrepping your sendmail.?.gz logs for the mentioned
hosts. If anything comes up it might say Relaying denied. If not then
you'll see other messages that give you a better clue.

UNLESS of course you actually sent 143 messages to screensaver4u.com and
in that case your sendmail is misconfigured to not allow "relaying"
from/to certain hosts.

Check your sendmail logs, that's how you can get more information as to
what went wrong with an email.

The best way of doing this is to add a line:

xterm*termName: xterm-color

to ~/.Xdefaults, and then make sure that:

/usr/X11R6/bin/xrdb -merge ${HOME}/.Xdefaults

gets run as part of your session initialization --- ie. add it to your
~/.xsession file if you're running xdm(1) or equivalent, or to
~/.xinitrc if you're using startx(1). This should work under KDE,
Gnome or any old window manager.

Cheers,

Matthew

final note of the setup.sh was to use the username and password I had previously used
but this was the first installation on this box and I had never provided one in the
past to a previous installation. Please help with this as well.

But the real reason for the email is this:

As instructed, I used my browser on another machine to go to https://host:1 and
was unsuccessful.

Here's what I found with a little poking around:

The used portion of the swap file continues to grow and grow, the size column in top
on the host eventually hits 400+MB for the perl process, the console begins to spit
out swap_pager_getswapspace: failed after a few minutes and the I get:

PID 247 (perl), uid 0, was killed: out of swap space.

Then Mozilla on the client computer tells me that the connection to the host has
terminated unexpectedly.

Any suggestions from anyone?

Thanks so much in advance for everyone being there for newbies like us.

Tamir

p.s. Is there a Webmin IRC channel or at least an IRC channel on which folks
frequently discuss webmin?

'origin not recorded' error upon attempt to use pkg_add

2003-03-28 Thread John Fox
Hello!

Upon attempts to use 'pkg_add' utility, I get a string of error messages
such as the following:

pkg_add: package wmtime-1.0b2 has no origin recorded
pkg_add: package wterm-6.2.7a1 has no origin recorded

It would be only a curiosity were it not for the fact that pkg_add *fails*
to add the requested package -- it returns a '1'.

So I am very curious about two things:

1) The methodology by which I can correct this error condition.
   (Most important)

2) Theories about what causes this condition.
   (Least important)

Thank you in advance for any advice,

John

Re: Freebsd - restarting itself?!

2003-03-28 Thread Siegbert Baude
Hi Jason,

If there was not a clean shutdown, I would start looking for faulty
hardware, assuming the power was not interrupted. Any machine that
spontaniously reboots on its' own usually has a bad power supply, but it
could be very well be the motherboard, or even something else. Further,
as many other people have said, just because the hardware is new does not
necessarily mean it is problem-free.

Look especially for the condensators on the motherboard. There is a
wide-spread problem with a Taiwanese company having produced bad
electrolyte. The resulting condensators are found in motherboards of
nearly all manufacturers and (as I can say out of my own experience)
give exactly the behaviour, you described.

This is off topic (sort of), but out of curiosity, could problems like
that on a motherboard cause problems relating to memory? If so, I bet
this explains my problems at work lately with an NT4 server giving me
the BSOD all the time with memory errors.
First, when I wrote condensators, I meant electrolytic capacitors, sorry
for the Germanism.

Look where your faulty capacitors are placed on your motherboard. There
are several of them around the processor socket and some next to the
memory banks. They supply these parts with current, if the "demand"
heavily changes, as these fluctuations can't be compensated by the power
supply unit. My faulty capacitors were placed around the processor and
I've seen exactly the above-mentioned behaviour of spontaneously
reboots. If your faulty ones are for the memory modules, all kinds of
memory errors could be caused by this.

BTW, if you think about replacing the capacitors, make sure you get
low-ESR-capacitors, normal ones won't work. I got mine from farnell.com.

Ciao
Siegbert

FreeBSD can't find HD adapter Tekram dc-395

2003-03-28 Thread Roger Olofsson
Hi!

I have a problem with floppy installing FreeBSD5.0 (and 4.4, 4.5 ) using a
Tekram dc-395 scsi adapter and one fujitsu 4Gb HD. What happens is that on
boot the sysinstall starts and when I go to the disk partitioning it tells
me 'no disk found'.

The Tekram adapter tools finds the HD fine and it is low level formatted
and formatted.

I can install win95 on same HD.

The Tekram adapter is in the hardware compability list and the chipset is
correct.

Please help!

FREEBSD FOR SIERRA LEONE

2003-03-28 Thread John Johnson

hello,

I am about to install FreeBSD in a Pentium II to setup a Mail Server for the Sierra
Leone Association of NGO (SLANGO). SLANGO-Net is going to take off, but I am scared
crazy about using FreeBSD without having a source of asking questions.

I used FreeBSD in Liberia, but right now I don't have a source of getting the
software. Please can someone help me with a set?

I teach at the University of Sierra Leone and I intend to teach OpenSource starting
with FreeBSD but I want to be strong in it before opening my mouth about it.

restricting certain users to certain things (pam?)

2003-03-28 Thread Michael Grant
I have a requirement to restrict certain users to logging in in
certain ways. For example, some users can ftp, others can ftp, ssh,
and get a shell, other users can relay mail using auth login.

I am pretty sure I can do this though pam.conf. Has anyone actually
done this? Can someone slide me some examples?

ipfw question

2003-03-28 Thread Walter
Hi all,

I see a strange entry in my mail log from the
ipfw log output. I don't really have a firm grasp
on ipfw yet and need help understanding how this
log entry came about (17 times), below:
> ipfw: 1700 Deny TCP 0.0.0.0:80 192.168.xxx.xxx:49339 in via fxp0

The output of "ipfw list" starts as:

00100 allow ip from any to any via lo0
00200 deny log logamount 100 ip from any to 127.0.0.0/8
00300 deny log logamount 100 ip from 192.168.1.0/24 to any in recv fxp0

02100 deny log logamount 100 ip from 240.0.0.0/4 to any via fxp0

My question is how come rule 00700 did not kick out the
prober, rather falling to rule 01700?? I realize the log
amounts are limited, but how did rule 01700 get activated
when rule 00700, seems to me, should have knocked out the
packet? Is this evidence of someone having broken into my
FBSD router, as there are no other entries I've seen to
other possible internal IP's, or was someone just lucky?
Thanks.

Question about bounced mail

2003-03-28 Thread Dragoncrest
In my daily reports lately, since upgrading my sendmail version, I've been
getting reports like this:

Checking for rejected mail hosts:
 143 screensaver4u.com
 1 srv.designtechnica.com
Not to sound silly, but what does that mean? Does it mean that it rejected
143 messages from the one host and 1 from the other host? Also, how can I
get it to print a list of all of the rejected mail addresses that I had put
into my mail hosts file? So like if I had "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" in my
access list and 27 of his messages got rejected, how do I get that to
appear in my reports? Thanks for the info.

Problem with this mailing list

2003-03-28 Thread Daniela
Hi all!

I have a very strange problem.
Since last Friday I don't receive the messages on this mailing list any more.
I do receive the messages for the freebsd-current list, however (subscribed
two days ago). I can only look at the messages in the archive.

Maybe I have to unsubscribe an subscribe again, but how do I do that? I can't
recieve the confirmation E-Mail.

Thanks in advance.
Daniela

Using .cvsignore

2003-03-28 Thread Mikhail Teterin
Hello!

I'm trying to avoid storing (and updating) some parts of the FreeBSD's
repository -- some of the locales under the ports collection, kerberos
stuff under src...

I tried the obvious -- adding

chinese
korean
portuguese
[...]

to the /usr/ports/.cvsignore (next to packages and distfiles already
listed there). I then removed the directories, but was surprised, when
cvs tried to get them all again. What am I missing? My ~/.cvsrc says

-z9
update -d -A -P
diff-U2

Thanks!

PICOBSD /dev/mdxx memory disk problems

2003-03-28 Thread Hartmann, O.
Dear Sirs.

I use FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT on several experimental systems. I try to test
new diskless and picobsd facilities and abilities of the newest FBSD
5.0-CURRENT stuff and I am a little bit disappointed.

First there is a little bug in the picobsd shell-script/command:

newfs does no longer support option '-p', so this runs into a failure.

When buidling a picobsd image I get this error:

---snap

*** init_fs_image()
/usr/src/release/picobsd/build_dir-bastion/fs.PICOBSD 8192

*** Labeling MFS image

*** Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
/dev/md1c 79830 7983 0%/var/tmp/picobsd.S98gZK4mQz

*** Copy mfs tree into file

*** Status of mfs image
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Avail Capacity iused ifree %iused Mounted on
/dev/md1c 7983 1458 652518% 81 10697%
/var/tmp/picobsd.S98gZK4mQz
fsck: exec /usr/sbin/fsck_4.2BSD for /dev/md1c: No such file or
directory
Warning: creating filesystem that does not conform to ISO-9660.

--- snap

The last warning is due to several special mkisofs options that are not
conform. Important is the failure of building the MFS filesystem.
It seems that /dev/md1c is really present, but when fsck tries to check
it, it gets an error.

I have a similar error on diskless boot process in FreeBSD 5.0-CURRENT,
where obviously no memory disk can be created.
Can someon verify or falsify these oberservations?

Thanks a lot ...

Oliver

Problem with kdm (or not)?

2003-03-28 Thread CARTER Anthony
When I boot my machine, I get the following message at the command prompt
before it launches me into the KDM login screen (it works, there is no
problem with that). What does it mean?

kdm[605]: Abnormal helper termination, code 0, signal 5

Thanks,

missing startkde

2003-03-28 Thread NOEL BALANSAG
hi all.

i recently installed kde3 via ports, but it seems that
make forgot to install startkde. i thought that it was
just a problem with cvsupping in between updates, so i
deinstalled kde3, cvsupped again this morning, and
reinstalled kde3 via ports. same problem.

is it possible to just create a startkde script? if
so, can anyone give me a copy of the contents? i dunno
what startkde should contain :-).

tnx in advance.

Re: FreeBSD and Oracle

2003-03-28 Thread CARTER Anthony
I know that there is an Oracle 7 client on FreeBSD, but I don't know about 8i.
Do you want to run Oracle server on FreeBSD or just a client?

Anthony
