oops -- my brain completely glossed over the version number. You're correct
that 5* uses ACPI by default; but if ACPI doesn't work on a specific
computer, I think the kernel can be reconfigured to use APM.

If ACPI is working for you, that's great! I recall many had problems with it
in FreeBSD 5.1. Have the problems been ironed out in 5.2?

Thanks,

I just solved this problem by rebuild my kernel with line
device apm0at nexus? flags 0x20 # Advanced Power Management.
I'm reminding that by default this flag is disabled and if compile kernel
without any flags ( only device apm0) my system FreeBSD 4.9 RELEASE
just rebooted.

Anyway to extract a large file from EXT2FS filesystem?

2004-02-17 Thread Stefan Krantz

Hi!

I would like to extract a large (11GB) tar file on an ext3 filesystem. But
it shows only to be about 3gb large:

yabba# ls -la pictures.tar

Is there any possible way to extract the file?

It shouldn't be appearing truncated. Are you certain that this size
is incorrect, and the file has a different size when viewed from
another OS?

Yes. Yesterday I tested the archive with "tar tvf" (11gb) in
Linux and it tested OK. In FBSD it says "unexpected EOF".

If I could i would just boot linux and split the file. But I can nolonger
boot linux =/ (migrated to fbsd 5.2 ;).

Just curious ... 5.X uses ACPI, not APM, right?

So does your advice still hold true?

"$apm -s" returns 0 on my system, but
shutdown -p works like a charm

Should we perhaps also check whether
or not "kldstat" returns "acpi.ko" ??

Kevin Kinsey

** Reply Separator **>

apm -s returns: can't open /dev/apm: no such file or directory
apm -e 1 returns the same error message.

kldstat returns a list of five modules, none of which is acpi.ko

I am planning on reformatting my computer and installing the latest version of BSD
when the next version comes out - hopefully the stable version. I would like to find
out why this is not working now though if possible.

Try this patch and let me know how it goes. You'll have to specify
the file name of /sys/gnu/ext2fs/ext2_inode_cnv.c to patch(1) manually,
then either buildkernel or rebuild only ext2fs.ko. If the file shows
up with the correct size in a directory listing, make sure you can actually
read data past 4 GB.

With no obvious known problems and this being a test system I have
wiped the disks and started over.

My near exact steps:

Rebooted from 4.9-RELEASE CD1
Went to 'fixit' mode with live filesystem CD2

"Wiped" the disks:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/da0 bs=512 count=32
fdisk -BI /dev/da0
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/da0s1 bs=512 count=32
disklabel -w -B da0s1 auto

First thing I notice is that the geometry for my SCSI disks differs by 1 cylinder
between da0 and da0s1.
I configured all the vinum slices as da0s1h etc.

Anyway, then I went on to a 'standard' installation.
I selected ad0 (space), q -no changes (already had a partition from above steps)
Selected "BootMgr"
Repeated for each disk (ad0, ad2, da0-da3)

Deleted all the prelisted partitions & filesystems and performed an 'auto' based
on ad2 (leaves ad0, da0-da3 unused)

Selected "Minimal" installation type
Sourced from CD

Post install configured fxp0 for DHCP,
Accepted NFS client, selected no for all other options
Set timezone to Australia Victoria
Added an extra user "tony" with additional group wheel.
No ports, no packages, no other options.
Rebooted
System booted from ad2 with 4.9-RELEASE GENERIC kernel

Ran disklabel -e da0s1 and added a 'h' slice of:
# h: ** vinum
Repeated for ad0s1, da0s1-da3s1.

ad0 is size 16498692, da0-da3 is size 8803557

The scsi disk being smaller, I use it's size for stripe calculations.

For stripe of 984s:
 (8803557 - 256) / 984 = 8946 (rounded to nearest whole number)

 8946 * 984 = 8802864

8802864 + 256 = 8803120 which is less than total drive size so it should fit.

I build a vinum config file test-config, just raid5 volume without vinum root:

### start test-config
drive vinumdrive0 device /dev/ad0s1h
drive vinumdrive1 device /dev/da0s1h
drive vinumdrive2 device /dev/da1s1h
drive vinumdrive3 device /dev/da2s1h
drive vinumdrive4 device /dev/da3s1h

volume data
 plex org raid5 984s
  sd drive vinumdrive0 len 8802864s driveoffset 265s
  sd drive vinumdrive1 len 8802864s driveoffset 265s
  sd drive vinumdrive2 len 8802864s driveoffset 265s
  sd drive vinumdrive3 len 8802864s driveoffset 265s
  sd drive vinumdrive4 len 8802864s driveoffset 265s
### end test-config

Create the configuration:

Yeh, I know. I will hopefully rewrite the readme and add some docs on
the next release.

> I've used mysql to set up several message boards,, but that's about
> the extent of my knowledge.

No problem here. The first question is: do you have your mail users in a
mysql database or they are in the system ?

If they are in the system use dspam_2mysql to generate the table for
dpsam from the passwd file, and use dspam_genaliases to generate the
spam aliases for each user to forward the spam to.

As a general note, until you're convince the hole system works ok
compile dpam with verbose_debug. As currently the port doesn't offer
that, just add:

CONFIGURE_ARGS+=--enable-debug \
--enable-verbose-debug

just above:

.if defined(WITH_MYSQL)

Be aware that this will produce * a lot * of noise on a busy system (It
will log a copy of each mail in /usr/local/etc/dspam/dspam.messages, in
dspam.debug it will log how it applies the algorithms ans some sql debug
info in dspam.messages and the sql queries and results in sql.errors)
And when I say a lot I mean about 100MB for about 10.000 mails.. Also I
would suggest turning off mysql query log if it's on (I nicely run out
of space, for the same amount of messages it eats up about 500MB).

Make an test user so that you don't have all your mails passed to dspam

You can use dspam between your MTA and LDA for local delivery. Or do a
more complex setup and re-inject the mail into the MTA.

Give me some more details, please.

ext2fs under FreeBSD is missing support for files larger than Linux's
old limit of 4GB. Fixing this should be relatively easy (start by
using i_size_high when converting the Linux disk inode to a FreeBSDish
in-core inode). I don't have any patches for this.

jailed "system" needs ipv4 access

2004-02-17 Thread John
Hello

I made a jail for a domain I host, according to the man page for jail.
It runs great and I can ssh and telnet on port 25 into it from the host.

What I would like the root user to be able to do inside the jail is to
ssh to other boxes and use the ports collection. I have set the
following sysctls:

jail.set_hostname_allowed=0
jail.socket_unixiproute_only=0

(the man page says:
cesses within jails may only access protocols in the following
domains: PF_LOCAL, PF_INET, and PF_ROUTE, permitting
them access to UNIX domain sockets, IPv4 addresses, and
routing sockets. To enable access to other domains, this
MIB variable may be set to 0.)

I wanted it to access as much as possible ipv4-wise from inside the
jail.

I have set the 2nd MIB to 0 for this reason, but to no avail.

Is it possible for ssh and ftp to work from inside? I want root to
install ports from within.

cheers

Re: PERC3 SCSI RAID firmware upgrade

2004-02-17 Thread Mike Oliveri
I've got one PE1650 that had the same issue. That's one of my Win2K
boxes (for the moment) so I was able to run Dell's script straight from
within Windows, but it pretty much boots the DOS CD (CD 2) as one of the
steps and runs the sofware from there.

It basically flashes the PERC card BIOS and firmware and flashes the
motherboard BIOS if necessary. The whole process took about an hour, but
that also included uninstalling and reinstalling the latest Dell
OpenManage software, which was a good chunk of time itself. I don't
recall it ever running a consistency check, but the paperwork did claim
it would run one in the background (presumably through the Dell
software) and I didn't check on it.

Good news is the process did go off without a hitch. I ran backups just
in case, of course, but again, no problems.

Good luck!

Take care,
Mike

---Original Message ---

hi all

does anyone on the list have any production dell poweredge 1650 servers?

we have several. we recently got a memo from our dell reps that there
is a firmware upgrade to the PERC3 dual channel SCSI raid cards. this
firmware upgrade is supposedly a preventative measure - apparently, dell
has had some experience with the cards not being able to recover after
one of the raid controllers goes down, they explained to me on the phone
that this firmware upgrade is pretty much mandatory.

of course, since our boxen are running freebsd 4.6-4.9-RELENG, the dell
rep who came over to our server room to run the firmware upgrade would
not touch them. he left a disk for me to do this myself - apparently,
the the firmware upgrade involves booting to a cdrom which applies the
firmware for you, rebooting, then hitting control-m to get into the
perc3 management console, running a consistency check (could take an
hour or so), then rebooting into the o/s. they informed me that i would
not have to upgrade the kernel or download patches for freebsd's native
scsi raid drivers for this card.

has anyone applied the firmware upgrade to their own dells? seems
relatively straightforward, but thought i'd check with the list before
taking down machines that have been running flawlessly for almost a year
to apply something which may be arbitrary...

Help with Vinum disk crash...

Hello,

About 6 weeks ago one of the disks in my Vinum array crashed.
However, the major problem is now that the file system is corrupt. It
appears I have lost all of my 300Gb virtual disk...

This is what I found in the message log.

I had not had time to look at this till now

When I do try and mount the volume, it says the following:

[02:25 PM [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/log]#mount /dev/vinum/data /usr/jails/ftp/data
mount: /dev/vinum/data on /usr/jails/ftp/data: incorrect super block

I suspect that the physical disk is dead, but I should be able to re-mount
the volume with only 3 (out of 4 ) disks right?

Re: Error 127 During Makeinstall of 4.8 to 4.9 Upgrade

2004-02-17 Thread Bob Perry
Hi Dave,

I wish it was only a testbox. I tried the archives, read man pages, and
spent what time I could yesterday trying to resolve the problem. Only
attempted the change to 4.9 because some of my ports apparently no
longer worked under 4.8.

Unless I can find some concrete direction, I'll run the installworld
again tonight and see what happens. Maybe I should run the entire
upgrade?

If the problem still persists, I'll have to consider another OS. As I
mentioned earlier, this is not a testbox.

Thanks,

Source IP confusion

2004-02-17 Thread Wayne Pascoe
Hi all,

I'm trying to setup firewalling for some machines, but I'm having some
problems with services on aliases.

I'll use 192.168.1.2 as the primary address and 192.168.1.3 as the alias
for this example.

I have applications like exim and bind, listening on 192.168.1.3 (an
alias on a machine). They are only listening on the alias and on
127.0.0.1. They are NOT listening on 192.168.1.2 (the main IP Address).

The problem I'm having is forcing that application to use its alias for
outbound connections. Even though the local_interfaces in exim is set to
192.168.1.3, when it connects to a machine to deliver mail, that
connection comes from 192.168.1.2 .

This makes firewalling a bit of a pain, because I can't say 'Only allow
port 25 traffic from the mail alias' - I have to allow it from the
machine primary IP.

Can anyone explain why this is and also if there is a way (without
reverting to jails) of getting my applications to use an outgoing
connection ?

Regards,

This is a well known problem and it and the solution may be easily
found by googling. The clock on your system is wrong. Set the clock
to the correct time and start again with 'make buildworld'.

No, that's just from the perl port; the default perl port in -CURRENT
is now 5.8 instead of 5.6, but that doesn't seem to be relevant.

Maybe you should look in the "missing" file that is producing the
complaints during the build. Or update your whole ports tree...

Have a look at section 13.7 of the exim spec - 13.7 Delivering to a
remote host:

13.7 Delivering to a remote host |
   |
Delivery to a remote host is handled by the smtp transport. By default, it |
allows the system's TCP/IP functions to choose which interface to use (if |
there is more than one) when connecting to a remote host. However, the |
"interface" option can be set to specify which interface is used. See the |
description of the smtp transport in chapter 30 for more details. |

Section 30 details the use of the 'interface' option to specify which
network interface should be used when delivering mail in your exim smtp
transport:

interface Type: string list*Default: unset

This option specifies which interface to bind to when making an outgoing
SMTP call. The variables $host and $host_address refer to the host to
which a connection is about to be made during the expansion of the string.
Forced expansion failure, or an empty string result causes the option to
be ignored. Otherwise, after expansion, the string must be a colon-
separated list of IP addresses, for example:

  interface = <; 192.168.123.123 ; 3ffe::836f::fe86:a061

The first interface of the correct type (IPv4 or IPv6) is used for the
outgoing connection. If none of them are the correct type, the option is
ignored. If "interface" is not set, or is ignored, the system's IP
functions choose which interface to use if the host has more than one.

Given this if you add:

interface = 192.168.0.3

to your smtp transport perhaps this will solve the problem.

I'm not too sure about named, but presumably there is something similar.

Good luck.

Well, I played some more and piping to cpio did the trick. I couldn't do
it in one go as pass mode doesn't support the interactively rename switch,
but a temporary copy out followed by an interactive copy in worked.

I then tried pax -rwi which was even more efficient as it let me rename
while find was creating the list.

4.9 install-boot problems

2004-02-17 Thread ivaldes2
installed 4.9, when i boot i get the message: "panic:contigmalloc1: size must not be
0" and that's as far as it goes. i dual boot with linux, the mbr is not a problemm
since i can select either os without problems. anybody know what the problem is and a
fix? appreciate ur help,thanks.
incidentally, / on 4.9 is well inside the 8g limit, though it seems that on freebsd
that's not a requirement, at least i haven't seen any mention of it.

remap keys

2004-02-17 Thread Brian H
Greetings:

I am trying to setup setup xfree to use the following commands. I have an
i386 running bsd4.9 and with KDE.
I tried to do the following.

xmodmap -e "keysym F5 = L5" #front
xmodmap -e "keysym F6 = L6" #copy
xmodmap -e "keysym F7 = L7"
xmodmap -e "keysym F8 = L8" #paste
after i add them to my .xinitrc these keys don't do anything.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,

Brian

cd ~/scripts

find /usr/ports/ -name configure | awk '{dst=$0;gsub("/","=",dst); \
print "cp",$0,dst}' | sh

Pipe the output to less instead of sh to check what actions will be
taken before running the above commands!

This will not work with filenames that contain spaces (easily fixed).

Doing the renaming interactively sounds a bit cumbersome if there are
many files.

The following for-loop ought to do the trick nicely and doesn't require
any interactive actions:
(Assuming you have want to name the destination files as your examples
above indicate, and also assuming you want to copy the files to the
current directory.)

for i in `find /usr/ports -name configure -print`
do
cp $i ./`echo $i | sed 's:/:=:g'`
done

You could either put that in a shell-script or type it in directly at
the commandline. It works with both /bin/sh and zsh, and ought to work
with bash and ksh as well.

The above for-loop is actually a bit inefficient since it doesn't
start to do any copying until after find has found all the files to be
copied, and this can also give a very long command-line after the
expansion of find's output which might cause trouble.

An better alternative is to do the copying as find(1) goes down the
tree with something like the following one-liner:

find /usr/ports -name configure -exec sh -c 'cp {} `echo {} | sed s:/:=:g`' \;

Malcolm,

I've got Brother HL-1440 laser printer. I throw all kinds of files to
it. Everything from text via command line (i.e. lpr /etc/rc.conf) to
openoffice documents to webpages from Konquror or Firebird.

Yes, I've read the printer manual.

I can't connect to ftp from another box. The message I get on my ftp client

Inetd is running and /etc/inetd.conf has

ftp stream tcp nowait root/usr/libexec/ftpd ftpd -l
ftp stream tcp6nowait root/usr/libexec/ftpd ftpd -l
Where can I find a log of what's going wrong or otherwise get this going?

Yes, and mine also has the problems he note with filenames containing
spaces. :-) (That seems to always be a problem with shell-constructs.)
The following version should handle such files too:

find /usr/ports -name configure -exec sh -c 'cp "{}" "`echo {} | sed s:/:=:g"' \;

Well, I know more than before and I can get sftp access to my fbsd box so
yes. Now I gather the problem is that the machine isn't listening on port

See ng_one2many(4) -- that's a mechanism for bonding together several
NICs in order to get better throughput, which looks like what you
need.

Kinda obvious, but is inetd(8) running at all? If it is running, did
you restart it after editing the configuration file?

To make inetd(8) start automatically on reboots add this to /etc/rc.conf:

inetd_enable="YES"

You might want to tweak inetd's runtime flags something like the following:

inetd_flags="-wWl -R 1024 -c 128"

which makes inetd log every connection to it and imposes some limits
on the number and rate of connections inetd will accept.

In order to make inetd(8) reread it's config file:

# kill -HUP `cat /var/run/inetd.pid`

You should now see something listening on port 21 -- if you still
can't connect by FTP, double check your firewall rules (remember that
FTP uses both ports 20 and 21) and /etc/hosts.allow.

Cheers,

Matthew

Hi Chuck,

The delay in my response here was due to pest control in our building
and the three-day weekend (I have no li'l-endians at home ;) .

Chuck Swiger wrote:

As I look at it more & more, it'll probably be a hack job to get it to
do what I'm suggesting. ;)

I've responded to Kris with further contemplations, if you have time and
would like to chime-in, please do.

Sorry to say, I don't think you're getting my gist here. ;)

I want a default setting -O "iff"=="if and only if" the original does not
provide it. That's what "default setting" means. ;)

Also, I do not want to override the original's optimization settings either
if there was one provided -- my "default setting" isn't used in this case.

See what I mean?

And as far as i386 is concerned, it is looking like -O2 is the "maximum"
that should be attempted. Other platforms, e.g. -march=7450 I use at home,
can go -O5 without problems. At any rate, I certainly want to cut-down
anything like what Kris mentions e.g. -O999!

> the ports I maintain the author explicitly sets -O2, but the port Makefile
> patches that via:
>
> post-patch:
> ${REINPLACE_CMD} -e 's/-O2//' ${WRKSRC}/Makefile

A msg from Richard Coleman, taken together with the GCC 3.x Known Bugs
site, is leading me to believe any bugs solely due to higher -O levels need
to be fixed by the author(s) of the software. ISTM many 'enterprising'
companies are relying on the integrity of GCC in this manner. GCC has
come a long way to earn that kind of trust. And so I would like to be
able to trust the author's settings in this regard, if I so choose
(putting on my system admin's hat).

You're changing what the author sets-up before any hack-job I invent will
even see it. Why? If I interpret what Kris said correctly, he wants you
to think GCC 3.x is the source of the bugs at -O2+. My response to him was,
essentially, to read-up on GNU's GCC 3.x Known Bugs webpage, where they
clearly state any -O bugs are much more likely to be non-ISO-compliant
source code style. The author would need to fix the source code and/or
logic in these cases so -O2 will work properly.

If my hack-job sees the result of your hack-job, it will reinsert a -O
(effectively -O1) back into the compiler options. But clearly the
original author wants -O2 here, so it ought to override my -O default, if
I allow it to.

I reiterate the notion of other platforms working fine with optimizations
and FBSD is slowing down because IMHO of some age-old assumptions about GCC
itself. As a specific example: If GCC 3.3.3 generates really fast code
on a Linux/i386 app *and* it's proven to work well, then FBSD/i386's code
should fly just as fast at the same level with no problem. Oh but y'all
are hacking the guts out of the optimization settings coming from the
author, so FBSD/i386 will never see the same end-results here.

Also I'm fussin' because I've read several KDE users's msgs about its new
slowness with 3.2. The higher-ups here would love to see this project fail
(they already ignore my ideas on getting Macs, but I digress...). We need
some _working_ performance-boosting options on i386 if we're going to show
FreeBSD in its best light.

As an aside, I volunteered to get net/tn3270 working again. Its src has
numerous violations, because no one has maintained it. On top of that, it
copies parts of /usr/src (telnet) and patches it to hopefully follow IBM's
RFCs for mainframe environments. I *really* hope to cut out these ugly
hacks once & for all. Guess how long this Puny Pentium2 takes to compile
anything... it's all 'they' will let me use here... *any* improvements in
optimized code will go a long way on these slow boxes (yes I've read the
on-line manuals on 'tuning' etc. and have already implemented as many of
those ideas as I can [am permitted] here).

Thank you,

natd originating IP

2004-02-17 Thread Bryce Newall
Greetings everyone,

I am attempting to set up what I thought would be a simple natd
configuration, but is turning out to be a little bit trickier than I
thought. I have a FreeBSD machine with 2 internet visible IPs on it. The
machine also has 2 NICs; the first NIC has the 2 external IPs, and the
second has an IP of 10.0.0.1 for the LAN. On the LAN is a Windows 2000
server, running Exchange 2000 and a couple of other services that are
accessible from the outside via natd redirects on the FreeBSD box. (Well,
Exchange isn't directly accessible, but Outlook Web Access is.)

Right now, I have natd running, binding to the second IP address (using
the -a switch. The problem with that is, I now have the
unwanted side-effect of having all outbound traffic appearing to originate
from the second IP address, both from the LAN and from the FreeBSD box
itself.

The main reason for using the second IP address is that I have a web
server running on port 80 on the FreeBSD box (the company's web site), and
also have Outlook Web Access running on port 80 on the Win2000 server, and
I would prefer not to have to have the users connect to OWA on a special
port (most likely, they'll forget). Also, by having outgoing traffic
originate from the first IP rather than the second, it provides an extra
layer of protection for the Exchange server (i.e. people wouldn't see that
there's another IP address out there with ports exposed to a Windows
machine).

So what I'm wondering is, is there a way to redirect the incoming traffic
on the second IP address that I want to redirect to the Win2000 server,
and still be able to have all outbound traffic originate from the first
IP?

Thanks in advance!

Checking directory sizes

2004-02-17 Thread Randy Grafton
I need to run a script that checks to see if a large directory has finished
copying onto my FreeBSD hosted Samba server. My script currently uses 'du
-s' to check the directory size. My problem is that the check can occur
while the directory is still being copied, so the du commend takes a long
time before it returns a size. I'm guessing that the reason for this is that
du recursively checks subfolders and files then totals the size, but when
the directory in question is still growing from an external source the du
command is in catch-up mode and continues its recursion until it has
outpaced the arrival of the new subdirectories/files. Is there any way to
see a quick snapshot of a file size, I hate to say this, but for example on
a Windows box you can start a folder/directory copy and if you click on the
new folder at any time during the copy you will see what Windows thinks is
the size at that time but by hitting refresh you will see the size increase.

Thanks

No. But I do see this on /var/log/messages

inetd[20482]: start: No such file or directory

I assumed it was running because it showed up in top and ps -ax, but I
guess it really didn't because of this failure on attempting to start?

Yet I can ssh into the box, and sftp in too. None of which shows on the
/var/log/messages -- I guess because inetd isn't running; now I can see

ftpd : localhost : allow
ftpd : .nice.guy.example.com : allow
ftpd : .evil.cracker.example.com : deny

So does the problem appear to be that inetd isn't able to start? Why is it
that I get so totally lost before finding out where I'm going? :)

Will I need to buy a separate video card and if so would you have any suggestions?

Right -- this is where the problem is. inetd(8) doesn't understand
'start' as a command line argument. It's not like the startup scripts
in /usr/local/etc/rc.d -- those are wrappers that start the required
processes themselves, whereas inetd /is/ the required process itself.

Try this:

# kill 20482
# /usr/bin/inetd -wWl -R 1024 -c 128

Then you should find your ftp service working OK.

Cheers,

If you're familiar with command line, ssh is all you need.

If not, check out webmin (/usr/ports/sysutils/webmin). But, really,
everything you need to do you can do from the command line. Use putty

Yes. There are many ways.

How you administer the server remotely will depend upon many factors:

1. Are you comfortable on the command line, or do you want a GUI?
2. What operating system is running on the pc?
3. How will the server and pc communicate? (For example: Are the pc and
server on the same network? Does the pc need to dial in?)

I want a default setting -O "iff"=="if and only if" the original does not
provide it. That's what "default setting" means. ;)
If the port uses "CFLAGS ?=" or uses that value via implicit rules, you will
get the behavior you've asked for by not setting CFLAGS at all: ie, the port
will use whatever CFLAGS setting it has as the default unless another value is
specified elsewhere.

If the port uses "CFLAGS =", the port Makefile or possibly a patch in the
files subdirectory ought to override this to pay heed to the system-wide
settings. In this case, you will have to modify that mechanism for each
relevant port yourself.

Also, I do not want to override the original's optimization settings either
if there was one provided -- my "default setting" isn't used in this case.
You're basicly re-iterating the position that the author of the software
should be the ones to set compiler flags. That's a reasonable position, but
it misses a vital consideration:

[ ...a snippet from a related thread, where an author of a port I maintain
disagreed about the port overriding CFLAGS... ]
] As for ?= in the same file. I don't find conditional assignment of [at
] least] CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS appropriate. Well, as it is right now, "complain"
] is probably not relevant, as I don't use any "extra ordinary" options
] (-no-exception is uses solely to minimize executables' sizes), but
] generally speaking compiler flags should be my choice, not yours so to
] say. At least on some extent, e.g. CFLAGS +=. Don't you think?
The reasoning for that change is much the same as above, actually. I'm a
network manager, not a developer. So long as it's documented and reasonable,
and it works, I'm not going to change it.

The original patch I submitted didn't change those, either. Someone
(fjoe/Matt Khon?, anyway a FreeBSD committer) pointed me towards:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/porting-restrictions.html#AEN1993
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/porters-handbook/porting-dads.html
...such as "15.13 Respect both CC and CXX
"
and "15.14 Respect CFLAGS
".

...before the port was accepted and committed. It's normal for FreeBSD users
to set CFLAGS in /etc/make.conf for the entire system, and ports are marked
"broken" (meaning not included with CD distributions and not available in
pre-compiled form on ftp sites) if NO_PACKAGE is defined.

That being said, to address your point with regard to ownership more directly,
the choice of compiler flags should be the choice of the end-user compiling
the software, and this change was made to facilitate that.

(s/made/required, if you please.)

=
See what I mean?
Certainly. Your position is reasonable.

However, the decision to facilitate the end-user deciding which optimization
levels (aka default CFLAGS) are to be used is a policy decision by the ports
system, but one which I strongly agree with.

And as far as i386 is concerned, it is looking like -O2 is the "maximum"
that should be attempted. Other platforms, e.g. -march=7450 I use at home,
can go -O5 without problems. At any rate, I certainly want to cut-down
anything like what Kris mentions e.g. -O999!
It's entirely likely that -O3, -O5, and -O999 will all behave exactly the
same. Have you benchmarked any differences in performance?

You might find it interesting to review a thread from July of last year titled
"buggy optimization levels", in which I wrote: /usr/src/contrib/gcc/toplev.c

Hi all,

please what's the difference between this ipfw rules:

${fwcmd} add 63000 deny ip from any to 0.0.0.255:0.0.0.255 in via ${oif}

and

${fwcmd} add deny all from any to 255.255.255.255

It seems similar, but I think it is not. Both should stop broadcasts.

Well, that site does not tell us what kind of video card it is exactly.
Open the case and look for the video card chip. Write down that
information.

As for your monitor you will need basic information about it also.
Horz and Vert freq range. What resolution can it do? hopefully something
like 1024x756...

There are 3 different programs that will help configure X.
all 3 can be accessed from /stand/sysinstall program.

This is often difficult for new people to nix.
Send us this info and we can help determine what driver
you need to use.

I'm a newbie, which means I do lots of stuff to learn and correct my own
errors. My workstation's a pc running win xp and I ssh into my fbsd box for
most everything - even on those rare occasions when I reboot; I just log
back in when the box is back up. The only downside I've discovered (I'm not
running X btw) is that on the console I have multiple screens easily
accessible via the ctrl-fkey combos. I used to use the screen cmd on ssh as
a substitute but found it kind of confusing, ymmv.

Now I'm beginning to realize that the suspend cmd is also good for this
purpose; plus I can always open additional ssh sessions. And for a gui view
of my fbsd box there's ftp, and after you get samba installed that works
quite well with windows explorer.

g++ 3.x does not recognize '-auxbase-strip' option?

2004-02-17 Thread Lin Jianfong
Hello,

I'm having trouble lately trying to build java/jdk14 from the port system,
tried 3 times, each time after a fresh cvsup, and always ended up with error

Just to make sure I tried:

Is the g++ compiler on my system borked?

FreeBSD generally has sshd(8) enabled
by default. This is "Secure Shell", and
is similar to telnet, but better ;-)
From the CLI on another 'Nix/Linux box, try:

$ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED]

and see what happens. If you are running
X (KDE/Gnome/XFCE/Enlighement/Whatever),
open a terminal and do the same.
If you are running Microsoft Windows, you'll
need to install an SSH client. I like PuTTY,
(ftp://chiark.greenend.org.uk/users/sgtatham/putty-latest/)
but there are others. Google for "SSH client", and,
if you're brave, include the term "Free" ;-)

Apache ssl certificates?

Hello list,

I've been using apache 1.3.x with mod_ssl with the snakeoil certs that
are installed originally. Now, I'm trying to create a CA cert and then
a certificate signed by that CA. That part is fine. Where I'm having
difficulties is in the configuration. I've got the two following lines
in my httpd.conf file:

SSLCertificateFile /usr/local/etc/apache/ca-dir/seccomp-srv.crt
SSLCertificateKeyFile /usr/local/etc/apache/ca-dir/seccomp-key.key

When I go the the server via https: I get a dialog asking
for me to accept a certificate, but it's still the snakeoil cert! What
am I doing wrong?

Brad,

Do you now, or have you ever, used FreeBSD? If not, please do not give
FreeBSD 5.1 to your 10 year-old son. Please download 4.9 from the servers or
wait for FreeBSD 5.2.1. If you do not have an adequate internet connection
for such a download, you can purchase the cd's online, or contact me
off-list. FreeBSD 5.1 was not released for production use. FreeBSD is a
wonderful operating system. It would be a shame if your son's first
experience with FreeBSD was unnecessarily frustrating.

As for the video card: I could not identify the onboard video chip at the web
page indicated above. On other Albatron pages, I noted that they sell video
cards with nVidia chips. If this holds true for the motherboard, you
probably have a compatible card; athough you may need to skip the graphical
configuration step until you can identify the card. Once the operating
system is installed, there are various ways to detect the card identity if it
is known to the kernel or to XFree86. For more information, see:

http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-config.html

which you can also find in the handbook.

Although we are volunteers (not a Support Department), we are happy to help.

Best of luck,

Andrew Gould

Tightvnc is similar to PC Anywhere in that it will let you see and manipulate
the server's window as if you were at the server. It is different from PC
Anywhere in that it is free. Tightvnc is available for Unix and Windows; so
you can use it to manage your FreeBSD server from your Windows PC.

On the FreeBSD server, install tightvnc from the ports:

> cd /usr/ports/net/tightvnc
> make install clean

On the PC, install tightvnc. You can find tightvnc packages for Windows by
searching via google.

If the network connection between the server and PC is not protected, you
should probably run tightvnc through ssh on FreeBSD and through putty on
Windows.

Best of luck,

Right -- this is where the problem is. inetd(8) doesn't understand
'start' as a command line argument. It's not like the startup scripts in
/usr/local/etc/rc.d -- those are wrappers that start the required
processes themselves, whereas inetd /is/ the required process itself.

Try this:

# kill 20482
# /usr/bin/inetd -wWl -R 1024 -c 128
Yep.

Something related which I'd like to understand Matthew. I don't know what
the base install ftpd is as

# /usr/libexec/ftpd -V
ftpd: illegal option -- V
ftpd: unknown flag -V ignored
# /usr/libexec/ftpd -v
#
However I installed wu-ftpd from the ports yesterday and it's in
/usr/local/libexec/ftpd so I changed /etc/inetd.conf accordingly and then did

 kill -HUP `cat /var/run/inetd.pid`

and for laughs (or developing the understanding now that navigating unix is
similar to driving in New Jersey) I tried ftp'g into my box w/o first
(starting) inetd and I got in, and ps -ax showed inetd running as well. Yet
I don't see in the man pages for inetd(8) where any of these options imply
automatic restart.

Anyhow thanks much. On to my next bonehead problem.

I hope someone who knows more than I about this subject also responds.

But, to figure out what to put for video card and driver, etc I use
three sources and I usually have to pore over all of them and combine
the information.
I try to get as much information from the vendor/manufacturer as possible.
Usually their web pages have something useful.
I dig through the dmesg output until I think I have figured out which
lines refer to the video stuff.
I go to the Xfree86 support web site and go through their lists. That
is probably the most complete source because it is really XFree86 that
is talking to your video card anyway.
  The Xfree86 page is: http://www.xfree86.org/support.html
  Then do some serious digging.

I don't quite understand your question. I would like to
filter spam from/at my primary nameserver, ns1.thought.org.

There aren't any real user accounts on NS1; it's just me
and an "admin" account, and of course, root. Other user
accounts are on inside/private hosts: tao.thought.org and
ethic.thought.org. ethic is a RedHat system that I let
my daughter play on. So far she hasn't gotten much spam.
The spammers hit me hard. Do I need to install dspam here
on tao.thought.org? (This host is my testbed so I have
mysql installed here.)

Ok, in an xterm on NS1 I just ran dspam_2mysql; nothing was
output to std|[out|err]. (?) Nothing in /var/db/mysql so
looks like I'm doing something wrong.

dspam_genaliases prints aliases like:

spam-nobody:"|'/usr/local/bin/dspam' --user 'nobody' --addspam"
spam-admin: "|'/usr/local/bin/dspam' --user 'admin' --addspam"
spam-www: "|'/usr/local/bin/dspam' --user 'www' --addspam"
spam-kline: "|'/usr/local/bin/dspam' --user 'kline' --addspam"
spam-postmaster:"|'/usr/local/bin/dspam' --user 'postmaster' --addspam"
spam-abuse: "|'/usr/local/bin/dspam' --user 'abuse' --addspam"

to stdout. Let's say that I want to block spam from
/home/admin: the address would be [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Where would I put the "spam-admin" alias?

Ok; looks like I'll rebuild dspam here on tao. I'm beginning
to get a clue, but still don't understand what I need to do
re mysql. Also, what to do with the spam-aliases lines.

Thanks much for your help. I think dspam will save
lots of people from needness grief (and spam)!

Yes, that's one of the features of jail. You know that IP address you
assigned to the jail when you created it? You just need to make that
routable to your destination machine, as you would for any other IP
address (turn on IP forwarding on the machine that hosts the jail,
make sure the route table is set up correctly, etc).

It's trying to open those files for reading, not writing. Please show
us a ls -l of those directories; it's possible you have a corrupted
installation.

Shutdown Problem

2004-02-17 Thread gerard-seibert
FreeBSD Version: 5.2

I have previously posted in regards to the shutdown command not powering off
my computer. The command I used was:

shutdown -p now

The system would simple get to the point where it stated "Press Any Key to
Reboot". This problem did not exist under Windows. The system would power
off without incident using Win2K.

Upon further investigation, I have discovered the following entries in the
'dmesg' file"

ACPI-0159: *** Error: AcpiLoadTables: Could not get RSDP, AE_NO_ACPI_TABLES
ACPI-0213: *** Error: AcpiLoadTables: Could not load tables:
AE_NO_ACPI_TABLES
ACPI: table load failed: AE_NO_ACPI_TABLES

I have no idea what that means, but I assume that it has something to do
with the problem I am experiencing. Perhaps someone might have some idea
what is happening and how to correct it.

Thanks!

I answered an almost identical question yesterday: it depends on the
volume structure, which you haven't stated. Look at
http://www.vinumvm.org/vinum/how-to-debug.html and supply in
particular the output of 'vinum list', unless the following applies:

If this volume has only one plex, you're lost, unless you can bring up
the failed disk long enough to make a backup.

Installing stuff somewhere else

2004-02-17 Thread Maarten
Hi,

what if I have a compilehost on which I build FreeBSD(5) images, and I want to build
certain ports, but would like them installed in $imagedir/usr/local/whatever instead
of /usr/local/whatever?
I'm aware of pkg_add's "-p" option, but that still happily keeps its administration
under /var/db/pkg for instance, when I would like it under $imagedir/car/db/pkg.

Also, what is the smartest way to have 'make installworld' install under something
other than / ?

Thanks in advance,

RE: Disk Quota Question

2004-02-17 Thread Joel Eddy
I've followed the manual on FreeBsd 5.1. Recompiled the kernel with quota
options. It is on the /usr file system. everything appears to be running
correctly.
I've made entries to fstab by the manual also.

mail# cat /etc/fstab
# DeviceMountpoint FStype Options DumpPass#
/dev/da0s1b noneswapsw 0 0
/dev/da0s1a / ufs rw 1 1
/dev/da0s1e /tmpufs rw 2 2
/dev/da0s1f /usrufs rw 2 2
/dev/da0s1d /varufs rw 2 2
/dev/cd0/cdrom cd9660 ro,noauto 0 0
/dev/da0s1f /usrufs rw,userquota,groupquota 1
2

But when I quota -u USERID I get

mail# quota -u USERID
Disk quotas for user USERID (uid 1001): none

Either I'm missing something or something isn't working. Where do I look next.

filenames get corrupted - Samba v3 - FBSD 4.9

2004-02-17 Thread Luke Kearney
Hello,

I have a problem where users who connect to my FBSD fileserver running
samba get their filenames corrupted. The users upload files with
doublebyte character filenames ( japanese ) and when they browse the
files from their computers ( win2k mostly ) the file names are
unreadable.

How can I solve this problem, I have never encountered it before. I am
used to not being able to read the filenames from the cmd line and can
work around that without too much difficulty but this fn corruption is
new.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here ? I would prefer not to
have to change the environment to a japanese environment if i don't need
to.

Thanks

By a cover i assume you mean some printed picture

The feature stuff needs to be handled for writing.

The feature stuff is slightly broken for reading. Large file support is
a read-only compatibility feature (it is indicated by the
EXT2_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_LARGE_FILE flag in the s_feature_ro_compat field
in the superblock), but we didn't support it without the first hunk in
the above patch so we should have rejected even r/o mounts of file systems
that have this flag set. We only reject r/w mounts of such file systems.
I suppose this isn't a problem in Linux implementations of ext2fs because
implementations that don't support large files in ext2fs don't support
large files anywhere, so files larger than the old limit of 4GB are handled
as correctly as possible at read time so their presence need not prevent
mounting.

On my mail machine I have sendmail.cf point to this file.

relay-access.cw

inside it it has entries like so:

2*1.11*.1*5.2 550 We don't accept mail from spammers
6*.167.174 RELAY
1.1.1.1 RELAY

after i added my NEW entry i run this

cd /etc
makemap hash /etc/relay-access < relay-access.cw

and i always kill -HUP pid_of_sendmail

Using SED in a script

2004-02-17 Thread Jack L. Stone

Sorry if this is somewhat OT, but I *think* I have a simple SED(1)
question for those familiar with its use.

I am working up a small script that will grep(1) a string like "215 new
messages" from a file for use as a variable. I need to then find/replace
an "old string" in another file that may say "198 new messages" with the
new variable string "215 new messages". So, only the numeric part of the
string actually changes.

I've looked at the sed approach, but not sure how to apply its use here,
or if something else besides sed(1) would be better.

This would be the steps:
- grep(1) the new string and pipe to sed(1) ..??
- sed(1) to find the old string & replace with the new string in a file.

Am I on the right track??

Tips on the script syntax appreciated.

Thanks and

Happy Trails,
